Hopeful Friday 2/27/2009

The season has begun.

At long last, it is here, the return of bike racing! Well, at least the return of racing bikes in the parks and outlying areas of New York-but those are the only races that matter in the early early spring, no? This weekend has the Cadence Prospect Park Series (with it’s newly announced Sprint and KOM jerseys) on Saturday, and on Sunday there’s the Spring Series in Central Park, along with the always dependable Bethel Springs Series up in Bethel CT.

If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can you can go to all 3 events this weekend in a display of form, dedication and lack of any meaningful relationships in your life.

The Pro/1-2-3 field in tomorrow’s Cadence Cup Prospect Park race is full. If you are a Pro/1-2-3 rider and you did not pre-register do not show up to the race tomorrow as you will not be allowed to race. There is no waiting list. Please also do not email me asking for a “favor” or a bribe or a trade or a swap for another race. Once again the Pro/1-2-3 race is FULL.

Please spread the word to your teammates and fellow races.

I will see you all tomorrow.

oh, woe is me, why am i going to do this bike race for fun? it’s so boring. i wish i didn’t have to do it for fun and that i did something more interesting with different people in a different place for fun. instead, i do things i hate for fun and then bitch about the boringness and non-fun-ness of what i do for fun.

I propose a Dork Room for people to discuss Power. A 24hour power palace. A whorehouse of watts. A wattage wigwam.

Because I am one, but I realize the futility of discussing it in public places.

Anonymous

why are people so obsessed with who crosses the finish line first? average speed is a better measure of how hard a race is. if loehner only went 0.2 mph faster than the cat 4’s, why does everybody think he’s so fast?

Anonymous

Only one race into the season and people are making clueless statements about speed, power, difficulty and who’s balls are bigger. This is going to be a fun NYVelocity season! A little tip for those who don’t know: this isn’t a team time trial we’re talking about. But you are right, JLO probably would not have won the Cat4 race, those Cat123’s are total pussies.

it’s a race in FEBRUARY after a particularly crappy winter…everyone is wearing tons of gear and a lot of people have been riding indoors only. Check back in july, 123 races average 27+.

and no, a lot of people don’t have jobs, unfortunately.

The goal:

Win the race
Expend as little energy as possible

Riding fast isn’t brag-worthy. Winning is. Congrats BVF and JoLo.

Anonymous

Whatever. From what I heard, he got lucky and got in the break, and the field wasn’t going any faster than our field or they would have caught him.

Anonymous

I heard that the whole field simultaneously caught on fire when a freak lightening bolt came out of a clear blue sky and struck a particularly well lubed (and volatile) chain. J-Lo befuddled all by wearing an asbestos base layer and fire retardant gel as embrocation. He rose like a phoenix from the flames to capture the title of the most important race held so far this season. Sure, he may be lucky (and oddly premonitient), but he’s not in the burn unit with the rest of the unprepared schmucks. He’s also rolling in dough from all that prize money. Hey, its not the first time weird things have mysteriously caught on fire out at Prospect.

the jumping, coasting and countering is what makes some of the slowest races extremely hard

some pro tour events average out kind of slow

cat 4 fields are usually are pretty limited in as far as teamwork and ability. and a high average speed usually means some jack ass is just towing the field for no reason any way

Anonymous

what’s sadder than the morons talking about speed/wattage/difficulty/luck are the people getting upset about the comments. who gives a fuck.

Why do you people race?

Think about if we harnessed all that energy (training & racing), we could power the USA…

haha
