Yeah, he’s a badass.
Who knew Tony Kornheiser was such a tough guy behind the wheel? Here’s a transcript of his "run them down" wisdom here. Or feel free to listen for yourself, the wisdom comes at 30 mintues in. Feel free to share your opinions with him here.

what a f&^*ing dick
I love the guys who get in a car and suddenly have 1 ton of courage.
one ton courage and hung like a pimple… no doubt
At least he got the ‘biker’/’cyclist’ distinction right. That’s more than I can say for the NYT. But yes, a doosh.
at last, something armstrong and nyvelocity can agree on.
who have little consideration for pedestrians or drivers and act as if they own the road giving the finger to people because their cadence gets interrupted. Doesn’t excuse TK either.
I agree with Topcap. We help bring this problem onto ourselves by running red lights, not stopping at stop signs, riding in the middle of the road (at times), and yelling angrily at motorists when they come a little close.
I have been on rides numerous times up 9W and so on only to see riders wearing kits of NYC teams that blatantly run red lights, yell at motorists and have little regard for others around them. This attitude is what breeds such animosity towards cyclists.
If you are out riding, stay to the right, keep your cool and actually obey traffic laws. Sure it may seem painful to stop at every light, but it’s a small price to pay to keep things civil and not get swiped or run over.
I’m not sure that attitude covers the majority of cyclists. People on bikes are a cross section of any group of people—some are nice, some are rude and aggressive, some are gassy (me)—but to advocate the injury or murder (by “running them down”) of the whole group is a very reckless and stupid comment.
my online coach said i have to maintain 216 watts at all times. sometimes i have to blow through a light here and there. is that wrong?
I agree. The “running them down comment” is analogous to saying that aggressive drivers should be crushed inside of their cars by gigantic semi trucks carrying 40 tons of ham (though Toto might not mind that).
Some municipalities (Milwaukee) run by people with a lot more common sense have actually enacted laws that allow cyclists to treat a red light as a stop sign. My personal rule of thumb is that if I’m looking at a stop sign or a red light, it gives everyone else at the intersection without a stop sign or a red light the right of way, whether they’re walking, driving or *gasp* riding a bicycle. Plain and simple. Now if there’s nobody else at the intersection (except for Jerry, my imaginary friend, of course), then I feel I can go ahead because, after all, there’s nobody around who cares.
My overriding philosophy about the whole thing isn’t necessarily my own safety or obeying every traffic law to the letter, it’s simply being considerate and not being a dick. I think the fact that I ride to work through Manhattan every day and do CP laps and 9W trips as often as I can, and I’d say on average get honked at maybe once a month is a pretty good qualitative measure of the success of my approach.
Oh, and Tony Kornheiser is a dick.
That cost me a collar bone, six weeks of work, my daughters first season of softball and a racing season.
That little bump if done intentionally is assault with a deadly weapon, which is a felony. Just sayin’
can you get a ticket if you run red light in central park or prospect park?
Yes you can, at least in CP. Early last summer they were handing them out to cyclists who didn’t stop at lights or stop signs.
can you get a ticket for wearing a hideous looking team kit?
yesterday i threw up in my mouth a little after getting passed by someone in their new crca subteam outfit. luckily i was able to maintain a safe distance from behind.
my favorite part, i think:
“Kevin: In St. Louis, a woman on a bike riding in rush hour traffic blew a tire, tumbled into the middle of the road in front of oncoming traffic, she was run over by a taxi. She survived, but the taxi driver had to be rushed to the hospital with an injured neck.”
i mean, the cabbie was hurt, and this b*tch didn’t even have the common courtesy to DIE.
Kornheiser: “i know someone’s gonna hate me for this”… yup. lotta people, actually.
on the plus side, this may be the first ever anti-cycling rant that doesn’t once refer to us as “lance armstrong wannabe’s” or remind us that “this isn’t the tour de france.”
Piermont cops are sandbaggers. They should upgrade to NYPD.
Like the little Prospect Park assh*le who passes a lady with her dog off leash at 6:45 a.m. — rather than telling her it’s dangerous and asking her to respect others’ safety, he simply yells, “bad, BAD dog owner… Asshole!” Didn’t even explain the problem to the ignorant dog person.
When you declare war on others, they have no option but to respond in kind.

Also on ESPN, can we fire Kornheiser and replace him with Caple?

cyclist killed no arrest/ pedestrian walks in front of cyclist and he gets tickets for no lights and other stupid things and not for running a light,( time of incident 8 30 am) I assume he was not at fault since no moving violation tickets were issued, same paper two stories and cyclists are made to look like a holes, interesting
Guys, the bathroom at Bunbury’s is for peeing, not crapping. Someone totally ruined my bliss today.
I saw those same two post articles today. The delivery guy sticks around and he gets a summons for no reflectors and no lights at 8:30AM. how does that make sense. The cops clearly wanted to get him for anything.
The article doesn’t say the cyclist went through a red light. I’ll bet the pedestrian was jay walking, otherwise the cyclist would have had the book thrown at him. Sounds like they gave him the only tickets they could.
The rules are:
1. No Cop(s)
2. No car(s)
No Stop.
Besides who’s out there calling for the death of all the car drivers since we know they’re all driving drunk, right? And we know they’re all following the speed limit as well…
I know, two wrongs don’t make a right but it does make for a good legal debate with the cop when you do get a ticket on the bike.
Yes, I’ve always said that lax enforcement of speed limits for drivers is the car equivalent of lax enforcement of red lights for cyclists. I go through a red light right in front of an NYPD car at least twice a week and nothing happens. Of course I don’t plow through a crosswalk full of pedestrians or sit there track standing in the middle of the intersection to do it either. Like I said earlier, a little common sense, consideration and an understanding of exactly what the term ‘right of way’ means, all goes along way.
Oh, and Tony Kornheiser is still a dick.
Sometimes I’ll wait at a red light when there’s a cop right there, but I can’t help but think that he’s thinking that I’m insulting his intelligence.
say what you want about armstrong, lance is the only cyclist big and influential enough to make kornheiser retract and apologize. do you think if frankie andreu (no offense frankie) expressed outrage that anyone would even care? while i still think you’re a bit of a jerk for chasing simeoni down, thanks! besides, i always hated kornheiser and thought he sucked on MNF.
It’s nice to have the big bully on your side, right? Just ask Ligget, Sherwen, Roll, Bruyneel, Leipheimer, Phinney, Livingston…………

The worst riders where I live are the helmet-less college students on their old fashion bikes, dressed like hippies, who ride right through stop signs without looking, acting like they are the only ones in the world. I tell them they are making it dangerous for all of us, but they don’t get it and flip me off.
Andy, you should give it up. Power and money always wins, you should know this given that you live in NYC where it is most obvious. Lance wins. Period.
yeah, but can you skid like them?
…goes through a red light and no one is there to see it, is it a violation?
I’m sure he was joking. Take it in stride and keep your heads up high.
Please don’t get all victim, “I was bullied in High School” geek, feminist, oppressed syndrome activist on me.
It’s not like speeding. Speeding rarely occurs in places where speed limits are properly set. If you are on a road and most people are ignoring the speed limit that means the road is not properly posted. The proper way to set speed limits is to do a traffic survey and set the limit to the nearest 5mph speed that 85 percent is traveling at or below. This is the speed that provides safety and the smooth flow of traffic. But there is a lot of money to be made giving out speeding tickets, so limits are set lower than they should be even though it leads to unsafe road conditions. It also give cops excuses to go on fishing expeditions by having an excuse to pretty much stop anyone on the road who is driving at safe speeds.
the perennial bike VS cars online debate has sprung!
I hate the internet.
Central Park is properly posted but cars routinely go about twice the speed limit. I know of no other road where cars are allowed to go that much over the posted limit. On most small roads even through towns cars go 10-20 over the limit but 2 times? And right next to runners walkers and cyclists? Crazy. Such bull shit.
I see vehicles routinely cut the corner radius by a good foot or two, while far exceeding the speed limit on the sharper turns in CP. It’s just a matter of time before a cyclist, runner and or mom with a jogger gets whacked permanently. Horse alley between 7:30am and 9am is the worst because it’s so narrow. It sucks that it will take such a tragedy to GET THE FUCKING CARS OUT OF CP. Why a mom would take such a risk is beyond me, but you can’t legislate stupidity.
I’ve never heard a legitimate argument in their favor other than the fancy people on CPW and 5th don’t want the additional traffic.
gotta love the guys like kornheiser – not talented enough to play sports, so he sits around all day “analyzing” them. how does that saying go again – those who can’t do talk smack?
what an ass clown.
with Kornhole a lot. He’s an idiot looking to make smarmy comments just to get people going. He did that, and now has Lance as a guest(?). What better way to get numbers? Even though I’m no LA fan, hopefully he’ll talk some sense to Kornheiser and all the other meatheads watching his show.
I am the great Cornholio!!!
is actually pretty funny on ‘Pardon The Interruption’ and if anyone watches that enough they know that he’s full of hyperbole and blather. While I don’t advocate for the death of anyone (for the most part) I do think that giving this much attention to the Kornheiser actually works in his favor.
I don’t know his ratings but I’m sure that his producers are carrying all this outrage to the bank. The best thing to do in this case it to probably ignore him into obscurity. He’s probably sending Lance a thank you card and a ‘I’ve been Kornholed’ t-shirt right now.
I prefer to save my outrage for bigger things.
But that’s me and I know nothing.
Who knows how many people have been killed by cars, But know that bicycle racers have killed one in PPark and one in Cpark in the last 30 years. (so it can backfire to arm authority with the right to get things banned from parks, races are easier to remove than most anything) Racers need to set a good example.
cyclists are not innocent.
there’s a lot of incredibly stupid & incredibly arrogant riders out there that have caused avoidable accidents in central park.
Of course not, but the punishment should fit the crime. Tapping, or running down with a car, is not an appropriate punishment.
…innocent, thats true. but the operative word in your comment about central park is accidents…cars have accidents, cyclist and pedestrians sometimes tangle. the problem here is the road rage that exists driver to cyclist.
when I’m driving and a car is double parked or something else in the road impedes me, I simply singnal and go around it…why is that so hard to do when that impediment is a cyclist? no driver/cyclist/man in a wheel chair is entitled to a clear path. thats the road…
…for going on the show. Lance have been given award by ESPN, now one of their on air personalities is saying run cyclist down and he grants that person an interview. I dont get it.
Agreed. What Lance should have done was told the powers at ESPN…”I will NOT go on your show and fish for an apology. I will not patronize a network that employs imbiciles like Korn-hole. If you want a quote from me, get it from CBS.”
Today on Hudson Terrace two female cyclist were riding side by side,I rode behind them until I got a clear shot at passing. After a car went by I came along side them and reminded her that she’s riding in the middle of the road and kind of shook my head and laughed at her.On the way back(yet again on Hudson Terrace) a guy is riding with no hands further out into the street than he should be,I’m looking to pass,I give him “the look” and keep it moving. The problem is people are “competing” for space. The problem with motorist is that they lack experience.Experience is having patients and that is very important.Emotions is another, people feel powerful behind the wheel because its the only thing in life they can come up with to get their rocks off,so when a cyclist “is in their way” they react as a child.Common sense should be they law to follow. The politicians and the police KNOW motorist routinely speed and in Central PARK but whatever their reasons are they do very little.Maybey they would like to discourage physical activity.Wen I drive I don’t have any problems with anything except maybey the holes in the street. As far as the woman that got killed in da Bronx…well I hate say it but it seems to me that Koreans kill alot of people behind the wheel but I could be totally wrong about that.
wow, i thought you were just dumb until i got to the koreans part, then i figured out you’re a dumb racist
Women rank right up at the top with asians when it comes to good driving!
