George Hincapie revisited his old stomping grounds this weekend in support of I Challenge Myself, a foundation that helps youths from underserved communities to become physically active, which in turn boosts their academics and self esteem. The festivities began with a cocktail reception at Cadence, where a graduate of the program spoke about the thrill of completing a Bear Mountain century, as well as the perils of drifting on two wheels.
The next day featured a group ride to Nyack with George, fully supported by Cadence. The ride got a little sprirted at times, between the locals trying to impress Big George with their efforts at the front and a few pulls by George himself. One highlight was watching the faces of the riders going the other way as the realized who was pulling the group, “wait, is that…” “Oh my God, it’s him!” George himself was very gracious, patiently posing for pictures, signing hats, race numbers and posters while answering questions. Interview by rabid Hincapie fan CJ, who picked him up at the airport, coming soon. In the end everyone involved had a great time and George and Rich Hincapie said they would really like to come back next year. Fingers crossed.

Seriously – that’s really not funny. We knew this was going to be an issue when we organized the ride, and had several contingency plans in place to deal with the repercussions, but like most things over the last couple of months it went pear-shaped beyond our wildest expectations.
Plan 1 was for George to point and yell, “look, it’s Jeff King!” when they stopped at the Spoon, momentarily blinding / overloading CJIA with double man-lust so GH could hightail it back to NYC solo. Totally underestimated the problem – CJIA didn’t even flinch.
Our second plan for George was to have Rich pull the “Indiana Jones,” i.e. George is the golden idol, and a High Road-clad mannequin is the Colin Prensky (e.g., a bag of sand) – Rich deftly made the switch, but CJIA’s highly developed olfactory senses could detect the pheromonal differences between the mannequin and the real George and we couldn’t set the hook … even though we used one of George’s unwashed TdF bibs on the mannequin, and sprayed it with a little TdF podium girl eau de toilette for authenticity.
So it’s with great sadness that I have to report that we resorted to Plan 3 – “the coyote.” A little gruesome to get into the details here, but suffice is to say that George’s incisors got a real workout this weekend and he will unfortunately be riding next year with a prosthetic arm. Meanwhile, CJIA is still dry-humping a severed limb somewhere in NJ. (Unless he’s finished, in which case he’s most likely gnawing on it.)

If so, he wasn’t on the ride. But if you mean the guy in the Deutsche Bank kit then, yes, he joined the ride around the steakhouse and I didn’t see him hand a check to Alex or Jed.

It is really hilarious when you say that I freeloaded on this ride. I mean, it is hilarious and also incorrect. On Friday I spoke with Alex Ostroy about registration – and that it was closed. I said who and where do I donate too and he pointed me to Daniella! I spoke to Daniella and she informed me that I could go to the iChallengemyself.org website to place a team donation. In addition, for a glass of wine, and a good cause, I donated 60 dollars to the cause.
Just so you get the facts straight, I wasn’t even supposed to be in the country and if it weren’t for the fact that Richie and Scott said come and join the ride, along with two of my teammates which work at Cadence, Tim Oakes and Chadd Butts, I can assure you that I wouldn’t have done the ride but, still would have donated as Alex Ostroy was kind enough to donate to my MS Ride a couple of weeks ago.
Somehow those posters that know me personally can just blast people without their names. Get some balls finally and tell me to my face. Don’t be a McCain on the issue – telling everybody else what the problem is only. Call me, tell me to my face. If you don’t like me, I am ok with it. Chances are I don’t like you or you aren’t contributing much to the sport other than non-factual rumor. Get your story straight before you post and if you blast someone – stop being a kid about out and grow up. Use your name.

I can’t believe this is what the NYC racing scene has become. You guys are a whiny bunch of jock-riding bitches.
That guy in a Deutsche Bank Kit is a friend/teammate, Darren Jeffries. DJ and George/Rich know each other from back when they were juniors and George/Rich were living/racing in NY. I guess it wasn’t yesterday that George was decked out in an Atala kit and showing up to local races and making everyone suffer, so folks may forget that he and Rich actually have ties to NY riders outside of his fan following.
I think what you saw was DJ catching up with some old friends that he came across on the road…hardly “uncool” but really what you’d expect of anyone similarly situated.
Although I rarely comment on this site, it REALLY bothers me to see personal attacks on other riders. Maybe instead of this we can focus on the charity at issue, which is a great cause. As some of you know, CRCA had some U15 races at Mengoni and we hope to have similar events next year.

And to get more facts straight. Some of these guys have had relationships going back more than 20 years with these guys. And for some, almost 30 years or more. Richie and I chat on a regular basis. I guess being closer in age helps.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported ICM. We had a great event and I hope all who rode with us, officially or not, had a great time. Alex Ostroy is a gem in the NYC cycling community and needs to be recognized for his hard work putting this event together. Thanks to Marco and his moto driver, too!!
