Jiminy Cat 4 men

Section head text.

NYC was well represented at the Jiminy Peak road race with riders from Blue Ribbon/Translations.com, BVF, Foundation, Setanta, Kisenna, Merrill Lynch/Hincapie Sportswear, Skyline Cycling, Metro/Sanchez, and Visit Britain braving the strong winds, chance of rain, and dinners that have never seen the likes of focaccia or chanterelle mushrooms.

Petr Huppert of Metro/Sanchez lined up for the Jiminy Peak road race flashing his trademark gold toothed smile with some matching new hardware underneath him, a brand new C-50 in black with gold trim. Unlike Metro’s career 4 champ, Visit Britain’s top Cat 4 Justin Reid came to Massachusetts scavenging for upgrade points to move up to the 3’s. Porter Fulmer of Skyline Cycling came without any expectations–the ‘Jiminy Peak Ski Lodge Race’ inspired visions of Alpine passes with tiny Massachusetts hard men dancing away from him. Like many of the Cat 4 neophytes he was surprised that the actual course resembled nothing more than an oversized Prospect Park.

The race itself started very slowly, with the narrow roads clogged with over one hundred cat 4’s riding as if they were neutralized for most of the first lap. Some brave souls attempted to get away, but were thwarted by the deceptively strong winds The local boys went up the long hill like there were polka dot jerseys waiting for the top ten. The group split with about fifteen going over the top, but with no real plans of staying away, they were easily caught on the descent. More breaks were attempted, but again the strong local men seemed to know just how long to leave them cooking before the capture, so once again the lack of any real team tactics made for a conservative race.

On the last lap, the race began to tighten up. The pace quickened and the field narrowed. The stronger riders at the front were not willing to give up their spots–being in the top 20 around the tight turn for the final 2 kilometers was key. With so many unknown riders, it was difficult to set up for an uphill sprint. It was easy to get caught behind a sprinter blowing up on the hill if you were too far back, but it was also possible to charge ahead and start your sprint too early.

Three of the strongest NY’ers were well positioned at the front: Porter Fulmer, Justin Reid, and Petr Huppert. A pack of 25 started up the hill, hoping to time their jumps perfectly.

In the end Petr Huppert would have placed 4th, but was disqualified for racing under a teammate’s name. Justin Reid claimed 5th, and has finally collected enough points for his upgrade. Sprinter and rapidly improving cyclist Porter Fulmer did his best Robbie McEwan impression after getting caught behind a mass of tired riders strewn about the road like a Civil War reenactment. Porter knifed right through and managed 8th.

Jiminy notes:

I don’t know if it was the clean mountain air and the chores or the depraved lifstlyles of us city folk but those Mass riders seemed on average 10 years younger than their city cousins. They were even able to field a sizeable junior race. Congrats to Justin for his upgrade! A collective moan was heard from the boys of Skyline Cycling who had all come to Jiminy harboring ambitions not to win or even get a good result, but rather to beat Justin in just one road race as a 4.

Adam Handler was 16th just ahead of me by a half a bike length, unless another foundation rider was to my right…

Todd

Considering how many teams were on hand, it is appaling that the race was so slow. New Yorkers should shoulder some of the blame for the negative racing. Hope Huppert is suspended from racing for a while and Metro dumps him as well. Such behavior is neither right nor sporting and should be punished.

Jay

A few pints the night before and a few more on the way home eased the pain of a 60th place finish and losing 49 seconds in 3/4 of a mile. Too bad you’ve cleaned up your lifestyle – I need someone to lie in the gutter with. Next stop, The Hairy Monk…

Alex O

I guess I really wasn’t paying attention because I dont remember getting hit. But its nice to know I’ve earned an enemy I was starting to feel left out on this site..

Corey P

Anyone who has been checking the results or has had a chance to ride with Alex in the past couple years knows he is one of the strongest and saviest fours around and a nice guy to boot. A made up name and anonymous slander from some rider who finishes the race 20 places below him doesn’t change that.

If you have beef tell the man to his face.

Jay

Alex rode to an 11th place finish over a tough climb on a bike that may now be on it’s way to Recycle-a-Bike. Not too buffoonish to me. Would he have bested Porter on his Scott?

Richard Tete

“Enemy” “one of the strongest 4’s and saviest (sic)” “tough climb”. Mon dieu! I’ve told you guys a million times not to exaggerate. Maybe the buffoon was not Alex but he definitely was in a Skyline kit.

Robert Porter

I ride for Skyline on a black Look 381i and no one punched me on my way to an 8th place finish. Why is it that the people who talk the most junk never post their names or use their real names, where did you finish? Will I see you at Owasco? I look foward to droping your punk ass!

Richard Tête

I would like to apologize to all those who have chimed in here because I get the feeling that you would like nothing more than for me to engage you in this back and forth mental masturbation act and I am frustrating you guys by not doing it. And Alex as far as thinking that you have an enemy in me, you really are not on the radar (sorry?).

And Robert or Fulmer or Porter or whatever your real name is, don’t you think that you should be the last person to be citing people who don’t use their real names? Well anyway so that you know, I ride a white horse, Mescalito 386 i and no one punched me either during the race

Isn’t it a bit hypocritical the way you all rally to defend someone who has had something relatively innocuous said about them in jest and yet you all jump on Petr Huppert and trash him – both in the articles and the discussion part -and that’s okay?

Robert Porter Fulmer (full legal name)

Hey Tete,

Do you race or just sit in the pack slowing things down? Would you be bold enough to tell us all where you placed at Jiminy or are you to embarrassed?

While you where composing your post myself and 6 other teammates where at racing at the Owasco Stage Race getting results. Where were you?

Until you have the balls to either use your real name or show up at a race and not just sit in, keep on typing you don’t seem to be good at anything else.

Barbara

I have never read anything negative about Petr Huppert or any other amateur rider on this site. In fact I know he is a friend of both of the editors of the site and his input is considered in the race reports. The site does an admirable job of celebrating and promoting amateur cycling in the NY area. The only hostile comments seem to come from anonymous postings, like yours – once again you seem to have a gift for ridiculous accusations.

I especially like the way you drag people through the mud and then pretend you are above all that, believe me someone like Alex is much more on your radar than you are on his. I suspect you just need to do a bit more training with the legs then perhaps they can spin half as fast as your mouth.

Alex O

OK enough of this if anyone has anything more to add about this race please feel free. If I really did something wrong at the race I apologize, Im not perfect, it’s quite possible.

Thanks to whomever is supporting me but all future postings along these lines will be removed. Sorry we want to keep the comments uncensored but as Barbara generously pointed out we are here trying to promote cycling and not personal vendettas.
