Park it

There’s probably racing going on outside of Central Park this weekend, but it sure doesn’t seem that way.

Mengoni’s on Saturday, and there’s the CRCA championship race on Sunday.

So, who is going to win Mengoni?

Still no updates on the irregular test results. One of the 3 tested was Cesar who went on the following week to take 2nd pl along with a big piece of the purse @ the freedom race. Guess he will now be allowed to up the ante by taking home the purse tomorrow from the mengoni race too. May as well make it 3 for 3. Right?

I once tested positive for Metamucil. And then I had a nice movement, which was like a gift with purchase.

Just insert a frame pump (Silca w/Campy pump head works best) up yer bunghole and pump away. You’ll be under the UCI weight limit in no time.

Michele Swage

Clearly women’s racing doesn’t get the coverage it should, but Giorgia Bronzini has been absolutely tearing shit up in France this week…

Sofiane Cage

Titouan, there should be plenty of parking on 5th ave or the various side streets leading into the start area (72nd street is where I duck in, usually there are spots there too at that ungodly hour).

just make sure you read the signs and try not to block a building entrance, the doormen hate that.

Colossal clusterfuck in the cat 3’s today. Great job by the officials. Making rules up on the fly. Totally JV.

No one on the podium because those who “won” didn’t even think they did. Terrible job all around. Someone needs to learn how to count to 6. Or maybe use a radio.

Lennert Wave Ring

The called it for the 5th lap. The official said he decided to call the race on the 5th when he saw people sprinting. Which to me says he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do till the last minute. The moto wasn’t informed and 90% of the field kept racing the last lap. They had 2 laps to sort this out, either to inform the field via the moto, that the bell was a mistake or to finish the race after the 5th lap, they failed.

Paul Carbonara

Mengoni – Someone made a mistake, it happens. The bell couldn’t be unrung. However, people should know that Marc Cesare finished first on the 6th lap from the break with a broken rear deraileur cable. That was pretty impressive.

Jarne Downtube

Alexander on 1st, Cesar marte 2nd, foundation in 3rd. And still nothing back on the testing results from 3 wks ago

when the bell rings, and the announce that there’s one lap to go, there’s one lap to go regardless of the count. if it’s a 50 lap race and they ring the bell at 15 laps, then it’s a 16 lap race. end of story.

lennart- 90% of the pack kept racing, but what about the 10% who did a lead out and dropped guys from the pack to set their guy up? if you ring the bell and say one to go, that’s it. last lap-done.

David Brakepad

The official didn’t know what he was going to do till he saw people sprinting. He was all over the place and totally messed the race up. Sure the result is the result. But most of the field didn’t end up racing that finish. I am quite sure a lot of people would not have got dropped had they thought they where racing for the finish. I know I wouldn’t have. And there was no announcement, the bell rang, most of us assumed it wasn’t for us.

Euris is currently racing a stage race in Puerto Rico. He didn’t race Maltese because of the roster limit and the realities of having a lot of good riders for only six spots or because he obviously knew ahead of time about the secret testing at Maltese and the non existent testing at Mengoni and why he also did not race Catskills.

Screech, Slater, Zack

it looked like the usual suspects, so obviously there were racers who saw the lap counter and heard the bell. sixcycle had a lead out going so…

David Brakepad

Most people raced for the 6th lap. Sort of a hollow victory. Whatever, its Cat 3 bike racing. Life will go on.

Racer #797 in the 123s wearing Saxo Bank shorts made a blatant move in the joggers lane to move up in the field. Not worth reporting him though because his number was upside down AND on the wrong side.

Somerville Bike Shop cycling team also was not in attendance. Probably not any testing down there.

Guys in the Cat 3 field – Apologies to all.

The bell was rung and the lap counter showed 1 lap to go after the fourth lap. The race staff were on the radios sorting it out as there has been a a mistake in counting the laps. At that point, getting communications to the field that the bell should not have been rung was just not possible.

The relevant rules here are:
1M2. The beginning of the last lap of a race will be announced by ringing a bell and display of the number 1 on the lap card. If the finish line is off the immediate course, the bell shall be sounded at the point of departure on the preceding lap.
1M3. Should the bell be rung by error on the wrong lap, the judges shall record the order of the finish at the end of that lap. The Chief Referee shall decide whether to declare these results final or rerun some or all of the race. The Chief Referee may bar from the rerun any rider who appeared to have no chance to win a prize had the bell been rung on the proper lap.

As much as it sucks that a mistake was made, the Chief Ref followed the USAC rules that apply in this case. It is clearly not practical to rerun even a portion of this race.

Tomorrow I will be counting the laps at the CRCA Club Championship. Feel free to impeach me if I get it wrong.

Tibo Swage

Forget it Rod, president for life. You have done a great job and much appreciated by the silent majority.

Sascha Swage

the lap card said 4 after the first lap of the cat3 race. so whatever mistake was made was made from the beginning. I feel for the guys in the break on lap 6, but then again that break would probably not have stayed away without so many guys sprinting, then sitting up on lap 5. whatever, shit happens. at least no one was injured by the mistake….

Byarnee Reeces Pieces

I can understand the anger & frustration of certain Cat 3’s, since with a good result they were likely to get a spot on a pro team for the upcoming Vuelta, right? Right.

Remigio Chainsuck

The break didn’t go until after the hill. It was way after the sprint. The break wasn’t impacted by the false sprint.

Moving on with life…

Simone Tubie

Not your fault Rod but a complete shit job by the official. First the lap screw up, then the “lets wait and see how many people sprint on lap 5″‘, to not trying to fix it once the bell was rung by contacting the moto, and then not stopping the race after lap 5 by tetting the moto lead the race for 1 more lap. Complicating it all is any protest is made to Alan himself and how is he going to say that he both screwed up the laps but then the subsequent events.

The rules Rod cited also allow the chief ref discretion and that discretion could have allowed another lap. He chose the route with less work.

Maybe we should try Denise for the next season.

Screech, Slater, Zack

you can’t have one more lap if there are guys sprinting for the penultimate lap. it screws everything up for the guys that put all their marbles into that finish. either decision, someone gets screwed. it’s not fair but there’s no way to fix it where everyone is satisfied. rod made the right call as per USA Cycling rules.

give alan atwood a break. the guy makes one mistake- albeit a glaring one and suddenly he’s an idiot? alan is a good guy and one of the best around. we are lucky to have him around.

Kylian Rubber Hood

that is the last lap people, laps are cut all the time. Yes it was a mistake but everybody talked about for the whole lap. After the sprint those not in the top 15, wanted another try. The mistake is not a big deal the fact that so many did another lap is unique.

Simone Tubie

They didn’t cut laps, that’s the point. They just rang the bell mistakenly. They realized their mistake but did nothing to fix. The motos have radios. Just tell them to tell the field there is still two to go. And if the race really ended after 5 laps why did 95% of the field race another lap. Why did the moto lead us around one more time? For shits and giggles. If they just stopped it after 5 I wouldn’t give care that much. It still would have been a stupid mistake and we would have raced for only 30 miles like it was a shitty spring series race instead of Mengoni and only 15 people would have actually raced for the win. Instead they made a mistake and just compounded it by waiting to see if we would sprint and then let us ride around for another meaningless lap. It wasn’t worth waking up at 4:30 for.

Btw, there is no rule that says if enough people sprint then we end the race. Just making shit up as he went along.

I also think its telling that none of the top 3 showed up for the podium. Even they knew the race was BS.

joshs

not me. as far as my thoughts on this: it sucked, i went home and had some boston cream pie flavored custard with streusel from shake shack and then promptly forgot about it.

Benjamin Bottle

bunch of fuckin’ whiners, just don’t race, jeezus. shit happens. oh well. get over it. the world, believe it or not, does not revolve around YOU. how about pulling that giant seatpost outta your ass and count your lucky friggin’ stars you’re ALIVE and can even ride your damned bike. repeat after me: it’s a toy. no wonder racing scene gone steadily downhill in this town for years, and why i stopped. it’s self-righteous, entitled assholes that just plain ruin it. so a lap gets bungled. big fuckin deal, go ride across the bridge and hop on 9w and get a good workout, have some beers with pals after. life goes on.

Simone Tubie

I get whiny when I get up at 4:30 and have to deal with idots. You’re whining about whiners so I’m not even sure what that makes you. Probably a lousy racer since you’d rather ride 9w with the NYCC.

Taddeo Stiff

one correction.
An official/marshal yelled to the field at the top of cats paw that there was ONE more lap to go. That’s why more than half the field did not attempt to sprint!

Brian Wolf

At the end of the day even though the finish was not what some of wanted, it was a beautiful day for racing. The nice thing about our sport is there is always next week . ( Brooklyn )

After racing for over thirty years and doing Mengoni almost every year I want to say that racing in both parks is so special and my wife and I love NY with its rich Bike racing culture and all of its people.

B.Wolf

Screech, Slater, Zack

if this is true, then cat 3 is the new cat 4. there are about 10 guys who might stand a chance of finishing in the top 5 depending on their fitness that particular day. the rest are sprinting for 20th place.

what kind of low self-esteem morons are risking a big crash for 20th place?

Alexandre Liner

Even me a lowly recently prompted CAT 4 knows not to sprint when out of the Top 10ish. You telling me 3s do that kind of thing?

....

The cool thing about a Brooklyn masters race is you have a 50% chance of not crashing and actually finishing.

Mathis Rear Entry

There was a note to do with USADA in South Jersey. I think it called out race numbers of people to be tested. Not sure if testing was actually done as I got therey for the last race.
