Waxing on

UPDATE: Kevin Scott shot some video of the CRCA race this morning, check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/wngdfeet

A little over a month has passed since the beginning of the bike season, but that doesn’t mean that the enthusiasm (or racing opportunities) have waned, in fact they may be waxing, right now, waxing I say.

Saturday has a CRCA club race in Central Park, it’s a power points race finishing on West 85th street.

At the Kissena Track, there’s the opening of the Kissena Royale.

Later on Saturday is the Kings County Kermesse at FBF, a great opportunity to see what Floyd’s like in the midday light. I hear it’s delightful, and makes for great photographs. The race is also a handicap format for the cat 3 and 1-2 field, so if you’ve ever wanted to show those bumptious cat 1s a thing or two, Saturday’s your chance. The finish is in the "classic" Floyd location, you’ll recognize the new location, as that’s where everybody will be before the race.

Sunday has the Spring Series Time Trial on River Road.

Also on Sunday is the Rahway River Park Criterium in, you guessed it, Rahway, NJ.

FIrst of all, I have limited direct knowledge – a few idiots who drop obvious hints to me. Hence, I start with ‘my sense…’

With respect to getting doping products – endocrinologists and other physicians all over the country are giving HGH and testosterone patches to men and women in their ‘menopausal’ years to make them feel younger. EPO is a specialty medicine so probably harder to get but not impossible.

Regarding safety, EPO has been given to millions of people over the past 15 years with anemia due to reduced kidney function. EPO’s safety profile is excellent as long you are not a dork trying to jack up your hemocrit to 55.

Synthetic testosterone has been around since the 50s and it’s effects are well known. In small doses (as used by endurance athletes) it aids recovery and combats muscle loss. Larger doses do scary things including cause cancer but testosterone has experienced something of a renaissance in the past 10+ years in low-dose patch and cream form. Even women are being prescribed testosterone for low sex drive. Yes, that sounds crazy and it is crazy.

HGH – approved for undersized kids. Not easy to administer properly but good safety profile. Not sure if it works for athletes but the placebo effect is a powerful thing.

I am a scientist and doping has always interested me. Just the dark side of the competitive drive. As a kid, I remember baseball commentators talking about greenies and bennies. I remember Alexei Grewal’s other worldly performance in the ’84 Olympics and the aftermath. I remember East German women shot putters with mustaches winning all the gold medals…

1. This sounds like the Zirbel situation: “I didn’t dope, but I know a lot of dopers.” Believe him or not, it’s not a logical impossibility to be aware of doping and not partake yourself. In a sport as saturated with doping (and gossipy) as ours, everyone is going to know something about drugs–including the clean guys.

2. Let’s ban the term “snitch.” It’s a term for informants used by criminals. If you’re interested in preserving crime, or the omerta, or doping, than it’s the term for you. If you want these things ended, the correct idea is “whistle-blower.” Enough with this macho “I’m no snitch” bullshit.

Guillaume Brakepad

I’m sure there are a ton of retards locally doping. Some people will shit on anyone in the work place to get ahead so whats to stop them from doing it in a bloody local bike race just to get some local bragging right.

There will always be cheats in every sport and it will go on till the end of time, the real issue I think is cleaning up are corrupt governing cycling bodies and once they are clean then we can really start to clean up sport.

2 year bans for pros was always a joke, give someone a 5 year ban and there is a serious chance they will not be back, obviously the test has to be 100 percent.

Testing properly is too god damn expensive as well, hence the waivers they sign so there blood can be tested in years to come.

The drugs will always be ahead of the testers as well, not much you can do about that.

If you seriously need to dope to take 2nd or 1st in a central park A race, well no testing is going to cure the obvious mental disorder you have so just enjoy your moment of glory before the men in white coats come to take you away for medical experiments of the brain.

isn’t this the colombian rider who came to FBF last year? he’s been placing pretty high up in major races out west. what’s the story? he doesn’t have much of a record down in colombia.

Eddie Headset

i mean, he does not figure in the national calendar races there (colombia), yet here he is battling it out with mancebo (at redlands and now sea otter). he seems quite talented.

Cafe

Funny, but I told a friend yesterday that Andres was part of the CAfe de Colombia Team and he was surprised. Andres raced in Colombia and decided that his future is in the USA, he is a short climber, and a fast pacer, not a sprinter. He came in 2009 to race for Mengoni and he won GMSR and some other races local, including being in the survival breakaway in Univest. Las year he took a risk and with the help of some frined he made it to the West to look for a team by himself, he did REdlands,Cascade,Gila and placed good at it with no team, Exergy got interested and now he is the leader of the team and the face of Felt Bicycles in the USa( his face is in
Cyclingnews main page). Cyclist have to be talented and have vision, this young man went for his future and now is racing with Pros. Andres had won races in the TOur of Barcelona, Champio of the Criteriums and Time trial Champion. He is talented and inteligent person.

Brief Report: Without a doubt, the Kings County Kermesse was the windiest race at Floyd Bennnett Field ever. There were times when riders were going 40+ mph with a tailwind and 12 mph with a headwind. It was brutal. The Cat 3 riders started first followed by the Cat 1-2 riders three minutes later. Cat 3 rider Andrew Clerico strung out the Cat 3 field on the first of 22 laps in the hopes of increasing their lead over the Cat 1-2’s. Meanwhile back in the 1-2’s, Ken Harris opened up the action with his patented attack-from-gun move. Despite his “no surprise” tactic that works to great success. the 1-2 riders seemed to either not care or perhaps thought it would not work in such windy conditions. Two riders were alert enough to go with Ken – German rider Andreas Fliessgarten and the on-form Gavi Epstein. With 6 riders in the 1-2 race, GS Mengoni missed the move and sent last week’s Cherry Blossom Festival winner Augusto Sanchez to try to bridge solo. Sanchez tried desperately to make contact but failed to catch the three riders. Back in the field, the Mengoni riders formed a desperate chase when they realized Sanchez was not making contact. It was too late – Fliessgarten, Harris and Epstein were gone and never to be seen again. At the front of the race the Cat 3’s were staying organized realizing they needed to work together to hold off the 1-2 riders especially in such windy conditions. Fliessgarten, Harris and Epstein slowly reeled in the Cat 3 field and caught the group with 10 laps (about 23 miles) to go. They wasted no time and quickly went to the front causing the Cat 3 field to shatter. Only Cat 3 rider Alessandro Matteucci (Finkraft Cycling Team) stayed with the leading trio. An untimely flat for Harris (his second of the day, he took a free lap earlier in the race) forced him out of the lead group. He receievd a new wheel at the Start/Finish line but never caught the lead riders and eventually retired from the race. Meanwhile back in the 1-2 field, a small group rolled off the front containing two Mengoni riders – Brian Breach and Jared Bunde. They quickly started gaining ground on the exhausted and shattered Cat 3 riders and eventually made contact. At the head of the race, Gavi Epstein cracked with 2 laps to go leaving Fliessgarten and Matteuchi as the leading duo. Epstein was now riding alone in third and behind him was a group of three Cat 3 riders – Sean Barry, Jeff Cline and Andrew Clerrico. With two laps to go Brian Breach caught those three riders and then dropped them. At the finish, Fliessgarten outsprinted Matteuchi for the win. Epstein soloed in for 3rd. Breach soloed in 4th and Barry outsprtined Clercio and Cline to take 5th.

Go to the CRCA web site. Then look at the row for April 16th. Then look at the column under “Finish Line” . You will see it says W85th. So the obvious conclusion is the finish is at ………… W85th street. See how easy that was. In case you get confuse, I’m sure there will be folks on W85th st. Yelling out lap counts.

With the recent bust of Pete Cannell (an accomplished Masters Cat1), as well as many local riders busted over the past few years, I was wondering what people think about the state of doping in the lower Categories (mainly 2/3). Everyone talks about masters and the pros, but to me, the most at risk categories are 2/3. These guys are ussually younger, delusional in thinking that they can “go pro” and not tested. The whole goal of the cat2/3 is to get to Pro/1. Just wondering what people think and whether we need testing at all levels not just the Elites.

I Love Lance and Doping

Who cares!?

The whole goal of college is to go PRO! Do kids cheat there?!

Did you file that cash bonus you received with the IRS?

Did you tell your wife that you enjoy the receptionist’s outfits?

As long as there is competition there will be someone willing to go to extra lengths to win.

This is a societal problem that won’t be solved with expensive testing and finger pointing.

Please look within and train harder. Fix yourself all your bullshit before trying to regulate the world grasshopper!

Journalist

I think the more insightful response is: who cares? Any cat2/3 who is good enough to merit testing won’t be cat2 for very long.

Brent Crude

Did she have to pose riding on the sidewalk?? Also, that helmet has zero chance or protecting her forehead in a crash. The bag also looks like it could have gotten caught in the top of the fork. So no, she should not have gotten a ticket for a law that does not exist, though riding while stupid would have been appropriate.

Arnaud Torque

You know, two years ago the SS TT wasn’t horrible. No registration problems, the starts were on time, clear roads and they accurately posted my results on Monday.

Last year was a swirling vortex of doom, of course, so I’d say there’s a 50-50 chance the TT on Sunday doesn’t absolutely suck.

...

Two years ago instead of ghosting slots for no show riders AvD moved start times up without informing the riders. As a result several guys missed their starts due to no fault on their part.

Mathis Limit Screw

in the RR TT when someone didn’t show for their assigned time Anthony moved everyone up, with the result that people missed starts even though they were there at the pre-advertised time.

The standard for joining the NYPD has gond through the floor. Instead of a fitness test, physical and psychological, there are ZERO standards. A buunch of fucking fools with guts are joining up and act as social bullies. Scum bags all!

Helmut Gescheint

My sense is that Cat 2/3 ‘young guns’ are doping with over the counter (OTC) shit. Tijuana crap that is scary and risky. This is speculation but true from what I hear.

Masters, because there are medical professionals and people with money in the ranks, can get the good stuff – EPO, pegEPO, prescription HGH with proper instructions, testosterone patches. This isn’t speculation – this is 100% true. I race Cat 3 and Masters and I could get anything I want from physicians I know. recrational cyclists who wish me well. I don’t and never will but…

Sadly, EPO or HGH or testosterone done right is safe. And it will make you faster. So as fucked up as this sounds, there is no real down side if cheating doesn’t bother you.

???

maybe it’s me, but there’s something profoundly wrong in what you’re saying.

first you have a lot of knowledge of local doping for someone who appears to claim they’re not doping.

you also say you can get anything you want, not speculation–100%, and presumably from physicians that aren’t treating you for some kidney ailment, or such, that you’ve failed to mention.

then you acknowledge doping works.

i’m no snitch, but if all the touchy feely “new clean-era of cycling” bullshit, locally or otherwise, has any iota of truth to it, then you sir are someone who should speak with some sort of authorities.

not that i care in any way except to find your posting bizarre.

Charlie, I believe you might have made a mistake. David Anthony must have won the 4s solo, but you have him listed in the P123 results.

that was pretty impressive. I don’t recall anyone else every doing that, but what do I know. I doubt I could do it. But, that rider was well ahead of others and he rode a straight line. There are guys who can’t ride a straight line sitting down with two hands on the bars.

Michele Nipple

Ironic that the one of the few times in the race he was not riding like a menace was when neither his hands nor ass were touching the bike.
