Hangover June 10, 2013

Things, they happen…

Many racing type things happened over the weekend, and a lot of them are not yet recorded, so that allows me to be lazy AND still claim that I checked for results. That’s pretty much the best sort of circumstances for me.

At the Red Hook Crit at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, five guys finished and Neil Bezdek won the race.

At the White Plains Downtown Criterium on Sunday, Evan Murphy of Foundation won the pro/1/2/3 race. Caryl Gale of Denos Wonder Wheel won the women pro/1/2/3/4 race. Zach Bender of Blue Ribbon/Translations.com won the 3/4 race. Gary Steinberg of Brauer/Mick Management won the 40+ race. Andrek Vogel of Setanta won the cat 4 race. Alex Kalbfell of Team Bikeway.com won the cat 5 race. Results are here.

And in the "what the…" department, we have this course configuration decision.

that organizers haven’t seen all the views that and red hook are getting. they are going to start trying to make us crash (even) more.

...

One of the guys who crashed at the NJ state TT rode into the back of a car stopped on the side of the road.

...

Not disputed. It’s tough to run into the back of a stopped car and mistake it for getting hit from behind.

You, of course, are likely meshing NJTT crashed which is an easy thing to do.

OffTheBack

I realize you probably said that in jest (or at least I hope so), but do you think any organizer wants to be known for putting on the crashiest race? Absurd. I guarantee that producing crashes was never Trimble’s intent in putting on a race at Brooklyn Navy Yard. And frankly, I find it difficult to explain all of the nasty crashes on that one chicane where Tony went flying over the State Bicycle Co guy–it wasn’t especially technical, and there were far hairier turns on the same circuit. Or maybe that was the problem as guys took it at crazy speeds and didn’t give it its due credit.

HFS! That crash has 27,000 views already!!
Red Hook Crit is turning into the Nascar version of auto racing.

To clarify:
That part of the road was used for two directions. No barriers, no cones.
When the breakaway got 30-ish seconds, there was a danger of a head-on collision. So a race official stood in the middle of the road waving the field to the side.
THe official got hit as she was running for her life– the field was spread across the road in one direction, and the lead car was approaching from the other.

Sorry to change the subject but what do you guys think about Banning GoPros. I almost went down in a race this weekend when one fell off a guys bike and bounced up into my wheels.

Paolo Kevlar

At FBF we’ve been racing over a loose 2×4 each week and it’s been fine. If you can’t jump or ride over a Go Pro we’ve got bigger problems.

Rayan Liner

Crashing would be just as bad, if not worse. Guys will literally ride right into each other since their heads will be down monitoring their wattage, heart rate, and inverse ETF portfolio.

crcadude

and probably shouldn’t be snarky, since a kid is still in icu. apologies. I think the light, or lack thereof may have been a factor?

crcadude

development team rider. Really fast 15 yr old, Joshua, crashed in qualifiers…collapsed lung

...

It seems almost implausible that the Crystal City crit course was allowed to be used. Who could have possibly thought that was a good idea, and why would an official willingly stand where they were? More remarkable is that they presumably ran a full slate of races over the day before that even happened.

Paolo Kevlar

So how do you corner on a track bike w/o catching a pedal. Must be difficult? Do you use shorter cranks or are the BB’s higher or something?

crcadude

have a higher bottom bracket. crank sizes vary from 167 to 172, it is more a function of higher bb

OffTheBack

Pedal strike is a not-uncommon issue cornering on track bikes, though as others have mentioned the higher BB and shorter cranks certainly help. From what I was told, Josh was in over his head, though it’s worth noting he still qualified given a time he’d thrown down in an earlier lap. My heart goes out to him as I saw him laying on the stretcher, screaming in pain. Godspeed and heal up quick.

RHC is for guys with phenomenal bike handling only. part of having a long career is knowing what your limits are…riding within them, and avoiding events where you know your are in over your head.

Cat4Forever

So, you are saying anyone who crashed in Red Hook Crit does not deserve to be racing there? FYI, only 5 guys finished the race out of what, 100? Son, Dave Tremble would definitely organize another race just for the selected few. That would be a major fail as a race organizer.

Clement Plug

Just a thought, does anyone from Major Taylor know who/what is covering the kid’s medical bills? – no USAC umbrella coverage in an unsactioned race – hopefully at the very least his parents are insured. If not maybe the club could organize some sort of collection?

He was smoking his field at Kissena this year, hope he makes it back to the oval soon…

crcadude

A lot of great riders crashed out/dnf….chabanov, ragot, many others. nothing to do with skills. Plus, the kid has probably ridden a track bike a hell of a lot more than some of those yokels.

Remigio Chainsuck

Just to clarify, 5 riders finished. The others didn’t all crash. Most were lapped and pulled. I would estimate 15-18 people crashed out of the final race, which is still a stupid percentage.

...

That race was really not that cool. All of gaps came from crashes. The little group of three formed because of the big crash in lap two. The chase group was whittled down due to crashes. “Hey I crashed at Red Hook! High five, right?”

Julien Topcap

maybe some of the good riders who crashed were crashed out by others who didn’t belong there.

if only 5 riders out of 100 can stay upright there’s something wrong….that’s not a bike race it’s a demolition derby.

...

About as tactically interesting as a cat 5 crit. The course was too technical for an open category race. Categorized, and on road bikes, that race would have been really awesome.

Hoping “someone” puts on a legit crit at that venue someday soon.

crcadude

ha! true. I do think it’s boring when nothing but crashes play into the outcome HOWEVER…unless you are talking about a pro crit, you are fooling yourself….still a bunch of freds playind dressup, your races aren’t “tactically” interesting (myself included) either.

...

It’s fun to watch cat 4s paint all races with the same brush. Just because you don’t understand the tactics in a race doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

That said, at the end of the day the guy who won red hook was the guy who was going to win red hook.

Paolo Kevlar

I didn’t watch the video, but I assume the rolled up skinny jeans help prevent road rash at least.

crcadude

that’s right, an expro, a couple of guys racing a pro race right now on crca composite team…but, sure, it was a bunch of hipsters. you are hilarious

Marchionne Supple

If other “normal” criterums had a similar rule about pulling lapped riders, having a small group finish would be fairly common.

Giulio del Friuli

CARES?

This turd-laden discussion is like picking apart a single-A minor league baseball at-bat?

There are so many IQ-80 beard-fucks walking around Brooklyn that it is becoming a joke. What’s next? Dynamite fishing on the East River?

BORINGO!

Ryan Locknut

Eric is a solid rider. I am going to go out on a limb and assume Alessio Liner was denied his 3 upgrade.

Sam Bartape

With all the people trying to upgrades from club races and FBF, something tells me its not a coincidence that the upgrade guy gets hated on. Lemme guess, ya’ll hating on him don’t like that you can’t get out of the 4’s by racing against 40 ppl at Floyd Bennet Field?

Sam Stiff

You can get out of the 4s racing against 40 people in FBF. You can’t by doing 4 lap races in CP in the spring.

Not a lawyer

no one is hating on eric ragot. We’re making fun of crcadude’s post below. this in particular:
“A lot of great riders crashed out/dnf….chabanov, ragot, many others. nothing to do with skills.”

Salvestro Chainsuck

I have watched the video and it was really funny. That man almost escaped from that car crash. Anyway he managed to complete the race. I am waiting to see the next session of this managed IT services race.
