The Smack Argument

The Smack Talking Argument

Have you ever noticed that a lot of very successful racers are often very quiet? They go to the races, win, collect the cash and go home. Is it because they know that running their traps might alienate other racers who’s help they may need in future races? Or have they found out the hard way that sponsors frown on idiots?

So when do you earn the right to talk smack? Is it after you win a Cat 5 field sprint? Please note that this is a discussion ABOUT talking smack, not FOR talking smack. I swear to God, I need flash cards sometimes…

If I talk out of my ass is that still talking with my legs?
Can I ass you a question, Ace Ventura, style???
Why is it that ridiers will bridge or chase a break with no intention of working it or sprinting effectively (top 10)???
Lead, follow, or get out of the way, but please don’t disturb to real racing going on off the front…

Eugene and I are the only identified people posting on THIS thread thus far. How are we so certain that winning riders arent posting anonymously?

Smack Talk

Spot the odd phrase out – the words Lee3, Eugene and winning riders all in the same sentence. Which does not belong ?

Andy

Whoa, let’s nip that one in the bud. Let’s keep this about the act of talking smack, and not name names. Though Justin gets credit for putting his name to his post.

Smack without names is not smack. It’s bullshit. Most of the supposed smack on this site is just bullshit. This topic is just weak metabullshit.

Chris M

Crazy! You beg everyone not to smack talk, and it takes 5 min for someone to trash a fellow rider on the board. I’ll just say I have yet to see a single example of a rider win a race and proceed to pound his/her chest in any excessive way. CRCA seems quite cool in this regard, and any trash talking seems largely confined to slamming poor race behavior mid-week in the midst of our boredom between races. Some guys are more mature than others in general, but hey, its NY, and we have a broad diversity of ages and competitive backgrounds, so what do we expect? Were not playing croquet here, but the level of politeness is way above the playground basketball happening a few blocks away..

Prospect 4 races

….no names since I don’t know them, but how about the individuals with Jamaican accents who are either yelling (..must be done with a Jamaican accent)…"you’re all riding like girlies" or "pull through". Mind you this is all noise coming from the back of the field. Maybe that’s not really smack talk, but is is usually followed up with exchanges peppered with the liberal use of the word "bitch" once the sprint is lost. "I’m no bitch" etc….

TH

ha! yeah, i always laugh when i hear someone 30-40 places back making noise. it feels like a family vacation when the kids are behaving poorly in the back seat. "don’t make me turn this car around!!"

lee3

To Smack Talk –
What’s your point? i dont get your entry or its purpose.

Anyway, speaking of winning rider. How about a poll on that Eneco finish!!!! George should have never been behind Schumacher 20 meters from the line

No Smack Yet

From Velonews…

Schumacher was forced to surge to his right to avoid rowdy fans who were leaning over the barriers and his rear wheel undercut Hincapie’s front tire and sent the American skittering to the ground in disbelief with just 60 meters to go.

An angry Hincapie sat on the ground as he watched Schumacher dash to third and grab enough time bonuses to snag the overall victory. Hincapie later crossed the line and was awarded the same time as the main bunch, but lost the race by one second with the time bonuses.

Hincapie wanted to hear nothing from Schumacher at the finish line as he tried to explain why he had to swing wide to avoid the fans.

The erratic riding seems likely to warrant a decision by the race jury.

More to come …

lee3

Yea…I suck, but I have fun though. I’ll win one some day.

I think George made the mistake of being in the position he was in, so close to the finish. Who could know if he would have been able to come around Schumacher. ‘Capie’s got a good sprint but he was at a slight disadvantage it seemed.

It would seem...

…that license to talk smack is granted upon completion of one’s first USCF race. Let’s go with the log-in’s again.

The Truth

Most of the really nasty anonymous comments posted here are the work of the owners of this site. The ensuing flame-fest just ramps up the hit-count, as you all keep checking back to read the responses. Its just commerce, not actual commentary.

word..

and i cant believe you all pasted over the interracial couple comment at the bottom, that was pretty funny.

cat1 racer

i love to post anonymously and start trouble. so many people take what’s said in these comments so seriously, its too much fun to pass up.

Faber

Lee love ya’ man, but not all of us can watch cycling.tv at work. Do not give away finishes of races to us fans that are not so lucky. I can’t see the finish until tonight or tomorrow and I’d like to be surprised.

Don’t be like Kramer who tells Jerry who won the Mett’s game.

I’m still getting over the fact that all the news stations gave away who won this years World Series of Poker. Dammit!

RichieRich

cat1racer I have to agree with you.I wonder if some here actually know the difference between a Jamaican accent and another carribean accent.HHHMMMNN?This is gonna be good.

Oh pleeease....

Faber, the race happened, its in the news, so its fair game. Dont blame Lee for talkinig about the news of the day! If you dont want to discuss cycling news, go to work and stop checking this site…

I talked good smack

before a rare win. Weak field and I’m in a break with one other guy who I’m stronger than. With about five miles to go he says "How do you want to play the finish?" I say "I’m going to attack you and ride in alone."

End of discussion and I won. Very rare.

I'm gonna rip your head apart and sh*t down your throat!!!

talkin’ smack is part of the game..they do it in all sports. Used right it designed to gain a psychological edge over your opponent. You taunt so they can come after you..(hopefully blindly and not thinking) in our game it would be burning matches to prove a point only to fizzle in the end.
I knew an world class level shot putter who used to talk shit to his competitors to get them to screw up..and it worked a few times.
But yeah..usually the quietest guys are the most dangerous guys. Big George Foreman in the 70’s.. El Garrouj? the middle distance runner. And a *clean* Jan Ullrich.

Last weeks barrage I believe was *orchestrated* to irritate certain teams and certain riders on those teams, so that *hopefully* they would race like a bunch of "monkeys on crack" for the upcoming A and B challenge races. Letting their egos get a hold of them..hoping for them to "burn matches" because they want to prove themselves.
Only a dumb-ass walks into dark alley after hearing "hey you..come here".
Ali was the king of sh*t talking, he wanted to get guys to get angry start swinging wildly and missing shots and making themselves open to counter-punching.
We don’t box on the bikes..but we do have attacks and counter attacks. Do you attack at the right time or attack simply because some dude yelled at you and said "what the f*ck are you waiting for? Cover that sh*t!"

Forward to the past / SMACK-fest deja-vu

Hincapie gets viciously hooked in front of hundreds, and nothing happens but confirmation of a stolen victory for Schumacher?

So. now we’re doing the throwback to the good ‘ol days of Euros smacking the Amercan racers around, again?! Shades of Peter Post and Jack Heid!

Shuey is one scared B*tch

Now you see if that was Thor he would’ve rode right thur that sh*t!..no changing lines to screw up some other dude.
Thor smashes right thru spectators!

schmalz

OK, that Schumacher move was bunk. He overreacted to a spectator’s arm and hooked George. He deviated about 4 body widths. Fair result would’ve been to give George the s.t for the stage and award no time bonuses.

But how Prospect park was the scene after the finish? With Schumacher and George pointing and jawing after the finish? Why no sound in the awkward tent scene after with George and Schumacher?

lee3

That tent scene was tight!!
George was behind Schuem. 20 meters from the line though. He shouldnt have been there. The only reason the judgement didnt take his favor was because it became a question of would he have gone around’em. Now, Shuem. should get relegated for the dodgy move because everyone knows that riding 8 inches from the barriers is just asking for trouble.

schmalz

Oh dear God! Lee3 get out of the apartment!! The gas leak is much bigger than any of us could ever have imagined!!

Claudette

Arguably, trash talking (or Zidane’s reaction to it) cost France the World Cup in soccer this year.

I’m brand new to this racing world, so is there some similar system in bike racing that gets one booted for "bad behavior?" Is there a "red card" that can be thrown during a race?
