Yesterday’s stage was notable to me for many reasons, Mikel Astarloza won his first race as a pro, we were treated to perhaps the greatest hair based breakaway duo of all time when Pellizotti Bawn Chicka Bawm Bawm and Karpets wah wa wa wa wa owww got away together, and Jens Voigt had to abandon because of a nasty high speed crash on the last descent. I am, like many cycling fans, very fond of the racing style and cheery attitude of Jens. And if I am to be honest, Jens is the racer that I want to emulate the most, and I think that because I am delusional. But my personal misconceptions aside, I do hope that Jens makes a complete recovery – as watching races without him involved is a thought too depressing to face.

Yesterday also saw another chapter written into the Lance and Alberto saga. Alberto bounced away with Kloden briefly on the climb yesterday, leaving Lance with the other contenders. Lance then waited a bit and jumped up to Alberto’s group, you know, to make himself available to help or get water bottles or giggle hysterically despite himself if Berto were to slip off the side of the mountain. Alberto did appreciate the help of course – he said so himself:
"I value very much what he did today. He made a great effort to come up to the group, but in the end I didn’t need him," said Contador.
See? He’s totally thankful for Lance – he just doesn’t need him.
Today’s stage is a big one with four cat 1 climbs and a cat 2 thrown in just to be annoying. This is a day that will shake up the race’s outcome like a Yahtzee cup at a retirement village. Today will require some audacious attacks from anyone hoping to move up the GC, as the race is running out of sloped opportunities. This could be a day when Sastre finally does his "big attack", or Menchov will finally realize that it’s July, Andy Schleck may look down at his Hello Kitty watch and see he’s running out of days, and we could even see Cadel risk it all by going from the gun and salvaging a dismal Tour – wait for it… Bwa ha ha ha ha ha!
Stage 17
117k to go, and I tune in to the delightful sight of Thor SMASHing his way off the front of the race. Will this year’s Tour ever stop enchanting me?
Thor SMASH is off the front of the race to get the few green jersey points in the valley after this climb – which is something that you would see Cav do if he were in green, I’m sure…
I can’t wait to see Thor SMASH his way down the descent here.
The Cervelo team car comes up to Thor SMASH, he tells them, "I am to the SMASHing right now, can you the hand to me my bottle of herring juice?"
113k to go, the group behind is arriving at the summit, but I’ve been so transfixed by Thor SMASHing up front, I have no idea who they are.
Thor SMASH is on the descent now, the roads are straining under the weight of the SMASHing.
VDV moves to the front of the pack on the climb.
106k to go, Thor SMASHing the descent. He radios back to the team car, "I am dropping the Cadel like the goat drops the used grass."
97k to go, Columbia complaining that Thor SMASH isn’t chasing enough today.
96k to go, I am so enthralled by this Thor SMASH descent that I am forgoing using the bathroom.
They show an overhead shot of the pack moving through a snaking descent, which does not help with the forgoing of the bathroom usage.
94k to go, Thor SMASH is at the green jersey sprint line. The SMASHing is complete, he looks at the camera, grabs his green jersey and says, "I have to achieved the maximum points, now I shall ride through the next hill as a time of resting."
It looks as if Thor SMASH will try to stay out and get the next green jersey sprint. He’s not going to fall back and let the race dictate his success – George, did you hear that?
So if you had said a few days ago that Thor SMASH would be off the front solo for about half of stage 17, you would’ve assumed that Bob Roll had said it while on a Ripple binge, no?
VDV interview – he says that Wiggo will be looking to crush people in the ITT tomorrow.
82k to go, and look who’s still SMASHing.
81k to go. Whoooooa! Thor SMASH almost Schlecks it on the wet descent! He leaves a divot on the road where he put his foot down – which he will have to go back and replace, bike racing is like golf in that way.
The break gets to Thor’s SMASH divot and guys hit the deck, Menchov falls, as does Txurruka – making a noise with his bike that sounds like his name?
77k to go, Thor SMASHing gingerly – is that possible?
76k to go, Menchov is taken out by a white line – ™ Tom Boonen.
Thor SMASH has two minutes on the chase group. Incredible!
71k to go, Menchov Tchmils the road furniture. Can he see more than 15 feet in front of him?
Here’s an Andy Schleck interview – how is it that he sounds more like my mental Thor SMASH than Thor SMASH himself does?
Sastre falls back to the team car, to get his rear derailleur lubed, and just happens to get to hold onto the car for a long time, those two facts are just a coincidence, of course.
67k to go, Thor SMASH has 2 minutes on the chase and 5:44 on the main field. He’s got one cat 2 climb to go before the last sprint points of the day.
Has Menchov crashed again? Is Razzy in the team car directing him?
63k to go, Thor SMASH still holding his advantage, I doubt he’ll hold off the pack on the last two cat 1 climbs of the day.
Here’s a Lance interview – Frankie asks about when Lance beat Kloden in 2005 on the same finishing climb as today. We hear a whimper off camera.
61k to go, Astana take over the pacemaking, trying to reel in the SMASHing. That sentence makes me giggle.
Cadel slipping off back again, unable to match the SMASH?
60k to go, Thor SMASH 2k away from the top of the climb, he’s starting to look like he going to pass a stone. And a Thor SMASH stone is the size of Gorka Marcotegui.
58k to go, Thor SMASH gets the maximum mountain points. He radios back to the team car to have them tell Pellizotti Bawn Chicka Bawm Bawm that he’s his spotted lady llama.
Thor SMASH gets one more descent off the front before the grim reality of gravity takes over on the last two climbs.
The Schlecks will have to try to dislodge Wiggo today, as they TT like Germans break dance – slowly and sometimes disastrously.
The SMASHing is back on the descent. Menchov is chasing back on to the back of the break, just in time to eat it again on the descent?
45k to go, Thor SMASH has a few kilometers to go until the green jersey line. Which might signal the end of the day’s SMASHing.
Thor SMASH goes over the green jersey line, his gap to the chase and the pack has been drastically reduced. He turns to the camera and gives a thumbs up as Levi drones on about crashing and such.
41k to go, Thor SMASH still SMASHing, the break is going to catch him soon.
Barredo catches up to Thor SMASH, you may remember Barredo from his desperate attempt to try and drop Marcus Burghardt as he fiddled with his zipper on stage 18 of last year’s Tour, yeah that didn’t work out so well…
37k to go, Sastre jumps on the climb, and the race begins.
36 k to go, Sastre passes Thor SMASH.
Sastre is working at the front to try and drop anyone with dead legs. Voeckler jumps up to Sastre to get some TV time for his "Tommy Face".
35k to go, VDV and Wiggo are riding with the contenders. Frank Schleck at the front, trying to drop a struggling Andy? He’s covered by Awareness.
Andy Schleck attacks, Berto covers. Lance and Wiggo get to the move also.
Andy counters Franks effort, Berto covers with Kloden. Lance, Wiggo and Frank gapped. Frank jumps up to the front move.
32k to go, Wiggo is riding tempo, VDV catches back on with Briskie. Will Lance allow Kloden to move ahead on GC? Can he do anything about it anyway?
So it’s now the Schlecks against Berto and Kloden at the front of the race.
Sastre is now falling back, did Thor SMASH climb better than Sastre today? Is Thor SMASH going to do a Wiggo now and go on a crash diet? How will he limit himself to just one smoked goat a day?
30k to go, will Lance jump up to Contador and Kloden to "help" again?
29k to go, there goes Lance, Wiggo follows. Lance working for Garmin? That seems like it merits a -1 on the phallometer.
Wiggo starts to work with Lance, as he’s no fool.
27 k to go, VDV gets back to the Wiggo group who are at 1:12. If Lance is playing the loyal teammate, he will just follow the Garmin moves right now, anyone thinks he’s going to do that? Anyone?
26k to go, there’s two descents before the finish, Frank Schleck releasing a bit of pee in his shorts.
24k to go, here comes the final hill. Wiggo. Lance and VDV at about 1:10. Kloden is the virtual Lance on the road.
Kloden has a discussion with Berto, replays message from the Hog telling him that his tires look really, really flat.
21k togo, VDV giving Lance a show on teammating.
19k to go, the Schlecks are working to gap Lance and Wiggo, as tomorrow is a ITT, which is not so good for them.
Kloden might be setting himself up to hit the podium in Paris, um, yay?
18k to go, VDV dropping, there’s always the descent, sigh…
C’mon VDV hang in there!
16 k to go, Andy goes to the front and Berto counters! He drops Kloden. I hope Alberto has a good food taster at the hotel.
Is Alberto trying out for Saxo Bank today?
If these three stay together, is there any way the Schlecks blow the win?
15k to go, the Hog comes up in the team car to Kloden – tells him to try and make it up to the 3 Saxo Bank riders up the road.
Wiggo and Lance are 2:30 back.
14k to go, Lance attacks to move up and "help" Kloden.
11k to go, Berto and Frank have a discussion on the descent, Alberto asks how nice the Saxo Team bus is.
10k to go, Kloden riding desperately to hold off Lance. Is Paul commentating on the same race that I am watching?
Up front Berto, gives Frank a pat in the back. Asks for Bjarne’s email address.
Kloden holding off Lance by 30 seconds. Ignoring the steady chorus of "Wait for Lance, Wait for Lance." that’s coming through his earpiece.
So will Contador gift the Schlecks a win today, for helping him to drop Kloden?
3k to go, Berto sitting on. Will he screw the Schlecks over?
2k to go, Alberto pushes Frank ahead.
There’s the finish, Frank wins, as discussed amongst the 3 Saxo Bank riders earlier.
Lance catches Kloden, and now rides to limit his losses to… Contador?
Lance gaps Kloden at the line, reminding Andreas that payback is a bitch. -1
Wiggo drops 3:09, which the Schlecks might drop in the first 500 meters in tomorrow’s TT.
Spot on with the Berto to Saxo comments…..you never know.
Van Hummel (those bastards) Who will be mon Lantern Rouge??? :(…
Doh!!!
damn good stuff.
shjowd he hjas the skjylls that pe the Bjills!
“The Schlecks will have to try to dislodge Wiggo today, as they TT like Germans break dance – slowly and sometimes disastrously.”
brought his hammer today!
Awesome Saxo bank commentary.
Sastre has said that he’s going to focus on a stage win on Ventoux. I’m not sure how that might happen – will he do the entire last ITT in the small ring?
Dinner convo’s tonight on the Astana bus might be a little awkward. “So Andreas, your radio was broken?”
Love the Cadel stuff.
LA easily passes the Schleck idiots and frame pumps AC on the final stage to place #8 on with Max in his arms… Nice, and Andy is now puking…
USA! USA! USA!
Whaaaaa, Whaaaaaaa. First George, now Cav.
Anyone else think he may be deserving of his own phallometer?
VDV is a good sport, and I sure do like him a lot better than Wiggle, but I loved the way Lance put the last nail in the coffin on him on the Columbriere. Lance is dreamy.
whether Lance was out to humiliate Kloden by re-enacting (albeit for 5th not 1st) the finish in 2005. I’m wondering if Nibali is such a threat he was forced to gap Kloden? I’m wondering if he just can’t help himself.
(I’m wondering how to post this thing as between Save and Preview.)
Kloden need Vino to help find his panache again. Just wait.
Armstrong will totally clean up in the NRCC Corporate Challenge next season.
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSMASHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The Schlecks go down hill like Cat 4’s on the “descent” to Harlem Hill.
Gotta love Thor for today.
Stikk å dra deg rævhøl
(go fu*k yourself ahole)
Frodo’s an overrated little peckerhead that should have stayed on the track. That’d be some funny shit if he popped a control this year. (even if he climbs with a 13×31)
how did kirchen wind up third from last, 35 mins down. did he crash?
so sad about kenny robert van hummel. i love that guy.
wow twitter land is going a little wild against Contador… Contador dropped Kloden?
Armstrong dropped Kloden/
AC’s tryout with the Saxo team cost his own team a stage win today. Kloden was poised for the stage win since the Schlecks aren’t exactly renowned sprinters. Maybe AC wanted to decend alone rather than follow Frank off a cliff. Or perhaps there is some invisible force that repels Kloden from the finish lines in Le Grand-Bornand? Whatever it is, I get the feeling AC doesn’t want his teammates winning stages or sharing the podium with him.
That stage was a like a cat 5 race on shrooms. Everybody racing everybody and fuckin free-for-all right off the line. Jeezus!
Ventoux is still a bear of a climb and everyone, including his own teammates, will be coming at AC with full force. I’m not rooting for Lance by any means, but to think that AC has it in the bag is to be misled.
I don’t think the Astana dinner table tonight will be very jovial.
Saxo’s gonna run down to McDonalds for Berto tonight
From the SMASH!
“I think it was the best day I’ve ever had on the bike.â€
Saxo servin’ up a little take-out paella from the back of the bus tonight, ‘Berto eats alone in his room and watches some Lucha Libre.
Given yesterday’s hair duo and today’s Hushovd solo-flier, my guess is that Schmalz is currently about as overstimulated as Macaulay Caulkin was the first time he got to ride the rollercoaster at Neverland.
Great Commentary. What will the Toto have to say…?
Just wanna throw this out there: Those new Giro helmets look like shit. Looks like one I have back in the 90’s.
Dickstrong’s twitters today gotta be taken into account for tomorrow’s phallometer calculations.
“Getting lots of question why AC attacked and dropped Kloden. I still haven’t figured it out either. Oh well.”
“No, but I always followed team orders. Always.”
Mean, but “beer out my nose” funny!
I’d like to see from the velocitynation graphic dept. a historical prospective of the Garmin facial hair phenomenon.
El Berto is doping. Nobody dances away from the top riders in the world like that. How much % greater power/efficiency is he running to do that? Uhh, no.
Should be interesting for Asstana part Deux in 2010, once it’s discovered.
Also wonder if backlash will hit Johanstrong II in 2010, i.e., not get invited to the Paris prom much like ’08.
That’s a nice theory about AC, eventhough he couldn’t shake the Schlecks today. Are they maybe doping too?
If and when AC doesn’t test positive, will you abandon this theory? Somehow I doubt it…
BTW, if those Dicktwitters are legit, that s/b -5 or -10 on the Phallometer. So, AC is supposed to wait up for or not attack Kloeden?!?! Since when is Kloeden all the sudden the team leader? Who is he kidding, LA would’ve done the same thing and laughed about it! Shit, I bet if you ask Kloeden about it, he’s got no problem what so ever.
liveweak.
If AC does test positive, it’s probably because Johanstrong slipped him something on the sly. If I were him, I’d watch my back…
My view is there’s no doping unless you successfully legally contradict it. I’m an “innocent until proven guilty” idealist as is the American legal system. (right or wrong) Which is diametrically opposed to the general European purview that “but of course” there all guilty and ban them then figure it out later, but screw his rep. and his earnings in the meantime.
Have I as a fan been screwed? Yes (Hamilton, Landis, Millar Basso etc.) but put yourself in there situation.
As for Contador, he’s clearly (as I predicted) head & shoulders above the rest and I choose to believe he’s naturally the best until proven otherwise.
Mentally – Alberto’s learned from Lance to take no shit from nobody including Lance’s and his mind games. Bravo!
Well not all-Deluca positive and finished 2nd, what was Menchov on then that he’s clearly not on now?
Not enough “wildcard teams are poor” references.
El Pistola is secretly doing online coaching, power training & race strategy for $400/month from his ol’ mentor, Saiz. He Tweets his PT files to Manolo at night before bedtime.
You heard it here first.
I thought Tigger or Roo had assumed the yellow jersey on the final climb. The tiny rat spent half his cottage wattage on his boing boing boing climbing style. There’s no mystery, Alberto. It’s OK to have those feelings. Lycra, massage oil, a little rub down with the lads…It’s just between you and the brothers.
what Contador’s contract situation is? Is it one more year? If so, is he forced to be Vino’s and Kascheckin’s senorita next year?
of the lame kind…
http://www.cyclingfans.com/node/433
Ventoux will be FOU FOU FOU!!!
“…Those new Giro helmets look like shit.”
Total agreement. Thought the same thing watching the coverage last night, F-ugly. And I’m no fan of the plastic-wasp-nest-on-my-head that Cervelo is sporting. Bad enough in white, but Thor’s green one….c’mon.
However, on a separate note, Thor’s save while Tokyo-Drifting towards the guardrail was pure handling genius. Thought for sure we’d hear a bit more about that sexy move from our host.
Finally, anybody else surprised that LA is hovering at 78 with only 3 days to go? 78 is kinda un-dicky, no? Shit, I’m like a 65-70 most days and I don’t have to suffer get spit on as I ride my bike though crowds of drunk, stinking Euroswine. I’m not a fan, but I thought we’d be sub-50 by now.
I too am a bit surprised that LA has been fairly restrained and has not attacked his team mate. I think today’s Annecy TT will determine if he will continue being the loyal team mate. If he puts some serious time on AC, LA will not be so nice on Mt. Ventoux. The last few days of racing should be very exciting. How I wish I was in France right now.
There will be doping controls for the winner and two random selections at Prospect on Saturday.
“I too am a bit surprised that LA has been fairly restrained and has not attacked his team mate.”
Ha!
You actually think LA could have attacked Contador?
Contador dropped Armstrong, so far, in all the climbs that mattered. There was no restrained
oh, btw, the original comment was about LA dickiness
I forgot another priceless Dicktwitter from yesterday, to add to the previous two:
“RT @LeviLeipheimer: If Andreas finishes 4th in GC by less than 2′ from 3rd, we know where he lost it. . .”
Why do you guys even get worked over the LA/LEVI twitts/tweats? It is clear that Asstana is not a team at this point. Contador is riding for either Saxo or a new team next year, Kloden will likely stay with Astana and ride for the Kazaks and Lance, Levi and Horner will be rocking Radio Shack kits powered by Nike and Trek. These guys all have thier own agendas. Too bad the Schlecks cant TT. Berto knew this all along and that is why he is riding his own race and keeping quiet while the D-Bag Lance talks and talks. I cant wait for next year when Berto shits on Lance again.
YEAH! WHY EVEN WATCH THE TOUR?!
that’s a joke, right?
man, thank goodness I am going away
also, there will be unregistered riders
http://www.nycc.org/mb/thread.aspx?b=1&t=15733&tp=1&c=(6)
…it looks like Sastre is mailing this one in to keep his powder dry for Ventoux.
This is ridiculous. AC has to be doped. I just can’t buy his TT skills.
I don’t buy it either.
…dickstrong ‘blew his wad’ so to speak, in the first few kilometers.
As far as AC’s TT skills, innocent until proven guilty. He is the Spanish TT champion after all. Just sayin…
they bust AC-flyweight beating the TT specialists give me a break
AC does have a really aero-looking position, but still not buying it.
they’ve been talking about how AC has been working on his TT-ing (windtunnel work, etc.) for a couple of years now.
Maybe that ‘investment’ payed off. Or maybe it’s the juice. We’ll have to wait and see.
Have to admit, he is a flyweight for a TT-er, though for this one with a major ‘bump’ in it, that would’ve helped.
Phil just said LA raced very impressively. I mean, Moreau, who is older, beat him by 45 secs, but who’s counting.
AC had best time at the first two checks, both of which were before the climb.
have they gone yet?
to tow the Armstrong line. Is there anybody on this website who races that would blame anyone but themseelves if they can’t hold a wheel on an incline late in a race?
Yet Contador is the “bad Guy” for Kloden’s deficiencies at the latter end of the stage.
This all out bias against Contador is really disturbing. If Lance did this it would be “Oh what a heroic figure Lance is!”
I love how they (Phil & Paul) keep mentioning that Contador “attacked” his teammates ystdy, yet claim Armstrong is being the real teammate
you guys would be calling lance a dick if he did what contador did yesterday and rode off with his menage a schleck
Not really, Contador is the team leader, he needs to do what’s necessary to add time to all his rivals. He needed to, didn’t you see Armstrong bringing Wiggins back up with him?
the VS. website have any forums? Maybe level headed non-LA worshippers should invade en-masse and verbally bitch slap Phil & Paul.
I’m sure when Kloeden was being ‘attacked’ he was thinking to himself “Wow! go get’em Berto!” not “what a dick!”.
No that’s what he was thinking to himself later on when livelame pipped him at the finish line.
Evie Stevens name and photo right next to contador on velonews…when did webcor pick her up?
When you’re the team leader in name AND on the GC, that’s what’s called WINNING the RACE. Whether your name is Contador or Armstrong.
Levi, Lance and Horner, they should be called Team Geriatrics powered by Geritol.
A truly amazing story. This women is sick. To win Fitch and now Cascade is over the top good. She should be in Europe next year on COlumbia or Cervelo. Forget the states., Amazing and she trains in NYC. Imagine her out west with real terrain to train on…
Amazing job. Congrats to her and her supporters who helped her get to this point.
yeah, seriously.
Something is up with AC. I don’t buy it.
Contador is laying down the law. The ultimate bitchslap to Bruyneel and Armstrong (Levi/Kloden), for their “multi leader/stack the podium” strategy…if Armstrong didnt ride in the split way back maybe Alberto would have played nice.
I think the win is way to important to let some hasbeens and neverwasses to uglify the podium in Paris…
(Wasnt AC/FS clients of Fuentes?)
Now all I want is for Cav to crash hard and drop out…
Evie is the most awesome evie ever!
She already moved out west.
Prediction – Stars and Strips Jerseys this year for Evie (if she competes). Worlds?
Evie races Tour de France next year, beats Contador, calls Frank Schleck fat boy as she dances up Ventoux.
