Welcome to the Tue, 08/10/2010 – 02:10 edition of Off Topic! You are looking at the next step in the evolution of VCN, the Off-Topic page. Have you ever been frustrated because you had a burning desire to call someone a sandbagger and could only hope to be timely by posting your comment to a photo gallery page or on a page describing a charity ride?
Well, your prayers have been answered! You can post your comment from the home page and it magically comes to rest here with the other orphans from the land of Misfit Comments. The page gets refreshed every day, but not to worry! Each day’s page will be archived and treasured, so you can look back on past pages with pride, shame or disgust-depending on how the day’s conversation went. So post away! We’ve got an internet to fill up.
Long Island Criterium This Sunday!
The First Annual Long Island Criterium will take place this Sunday, August 15, at the Suffolk County Commumity College in Brentwood, Long Island.
Please come out and support this first year event. Finding new race venues is not easy in NYC so the success of this first year event is important for future events.
It’s a flat 1.3 mile course with a twisty chicane-type section and one 90 degree right turn. It can be windy so expect a tough race!
There are races for Category 5, Category 4, Masters 35+, Women and Pro/1-2-3. Bring the kids – there are races for them too!
Take a break from “Park” racing and try a new race venue!

anyone know if it’s possible to catch a train out close to where the long island crit is being held?
Brentwood Station is closest, only about a mile or so. I was planning on doing that myself. The LIRR has bike restrictions on the Montauk line, but this train isn’t one of them.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION (Long Island Rail Road): Take the Ronkonkoma Line and get off at the Brentwood Station.
Train times:
http://www.mta.info/lirr/html/ttn/brentwoo.htm
The Brentwood train station is only 2.57 miles from the the race course!

NOTE: We suggest contacting the LIRR in advance to confirm that bicycles will be allowed on the train on Sunday, August 15.
Normal FBF Start Time Tonight!
A bunch of people are asking me if tonight’s FBF race starts earlier. The answer is no. We start at our normal start times: 6:30 for Cat 5 and 7 for Cat 3/4 and 1/2/3.
NEXT WEEK we start 10 minutes earlier: 6:20 for the Cat 5 and 6:50 for Cat 3/4 and 1/2/3.
