Go to give credit to CyclingNews.com for staying on top of this. I think the rules on mechanicals do not take safety into account and it’s ridiculous. At the same time, he could have manned up and finished the race in the drops. See shifter below.
Give the guy a break times are hard. Might as well attempt to cheat to get some of that cash.

If the official told him he was a lap down, why did he sprint. He could ride with them and pull out at 1 to go, taking the relegation like an adult. Instead he went against the officials order.
I agree with the ride that this should be considered a mechanical, because I’ve had similar things happen and know the danger of trying to race on loose parts. But, if the official says you’re out, have some respect and bow out.
