how long before this becomes a fad and the single speed hipsters start something else underground.

I think the promoters are well-intentioned and dedicated, but I fear the worst case scenario here. Since there seemed to be buses on the course during the race, what would’ve happened if one of the racers had hit someone getting off the bus? I fear that the news would report this as “bike racers injure pedestrian”; and then there would be a unilateral backlash against all bike racing, culminating in the loss of racing in the parks—where racing has a tenuous hold at best.

Arthur Saddlebag

the buses are all basically empty at that time. they don’t even stop. it’s just the end of their route where they turn around. next year the bus route will be temporarily changed to accommodate the race.

It’s a wonder you even get out of bed in the morning, weighed down as you must be by the universe of possible outcomes to every circumstance.

Arnaud Rivnut

no, there was a crash with a photographer who should have known better then jump out in front of a finishing sprint.

I’m interested on what basis people claim that riders at Red Hook are in danger of suspension. I can think of two: if it were in a City park, it would violate the CRCA code. If you held a UCI license, there might be limitations on what events you could enter. Your sponsors might object, but that’s between the rider and his team. If you held a position in cycling club or within a governing body such USCF, I could see them deeming it “unfitting conduct” and being removed from the position. Otherwise, I’m at a loss to see the problem with it.

Hi, Great pictures!

You took picture of me and my friend and then you asked us to help you move the lights accross the street. I was wearing short miniskirt and helmet, my friend had yellow t-shirt. Can you please contact me? I would very much appreciate it.

What time is the race held at?

Anyone narking out a rider for racing this to their team, UCSF,etc. should be thrown in front of those buses. What no one can have fun anymore?

Looks like a classic event to me!

The MQ style of photograghy is great- one shot bike racing, one shot hot chick…
The James Bond of picture takers strikes again.

Tibo Cogset

If I want to look at pictures of a bike race, I’ll look for pictures of a real race. With real athletes. This is just a party. And the only party pics I want to see are the ones with babes in them. So babes only, please.

Arthur Saddlebag

Thanks to MQ and Nyvelocity for covering the race this year. I realize it is not for everyone but I believe this type of racing event has huge potential. Next year the buses will be rerouted during the race. Perhaps with help from the community I’ll also have permits. The format will stay the same. What’s wrong with combining a competition for ‘real’ athletes with a party?

Thanks for the complements. I think? Martina emailing you later tonight.
Thanks to David T. for putting this event on.
the beauty of this sport is that anyone can enjoy it. in their own way. And thats ok
NO NEED TO HATE….the hipsters ti all good.
and for the record Brubaker DNF (FLAT) so technically he got beat by the guy in the yellow polka dot knickers.

Julien Nipple

IDK, but seems perfect for a Lil 500 style race instead of fixies on cobbles?
Next year I plan on polishing my “Huffy” and riding platform pedals!!!

Maybe other racers/promoters should take notice regarding prizes???

Tegghiaio Pulley

that NY POST video makes it seems like there weren’t 3 other bike races within the five boroughs this weekend… you’d never know.

wheelsucker

but bikeNY isn’t until May or something. I’m totally going to win it this year in the mirrored hybrid division.

Maxim Tubie

AWESOME prize list!

bravo for pics and all participants.

i wish i’d have come out there to watch & cheer ’em on.

will def. do so next year.

Maxim Clearcoat

maybe the difference was that this race had more spectators then all those races combined, and probably a better purse. hell, this race probably has more spectators then those series have over the entire run of a season. if its that easy, toe the line next year and make an easy $300 plus merch.

Tegghiaio Pulley

NO, the difference is this race had “BRAKELESS TRACK BIKES” only. that’s why it was covered. trendy bullshit. the NY POST piece at least should have recognized the existing race scene here, and why RHC is different. the local scene is invisible to most of NYC.

wheelsucker

there’s a little race involving brakeless fixies coming up: the UCI world championships in Copenhagen. Darn, those are some beefy hipsters.

Marius Bushing

why not have strobe lighting/lightning when a rider approaches corners and bmx jumps (crater size potholes), the fixie version of MX Super Sport!!! and then have the real Ducati street fighter version…instead of a lead vehicle, a REAL chase (and destroy) vehicle like a garbage truck instead of a broom wagon…
“Sunday Sunday Sunday”…see brakeless (mindless) messengers (please crash) ride cobbles at night with open streets…where was the trials category? flat land fixie freestyle? Posers to the absolute Nth degree…someone do that animated website thingy how many watts or gear ratio bs…

but still looks fun! I jest out of jealousy having missed it…trying to be snarklicious…

Some Dude

You guys are pathetic.
Why don’t you look at my scene too? How come the Hippies get all the coverage? It looks like a party not a race. Those are not real athletes. The New York Post article makes it seem…
YOU make it seem like there was nothing else going on with your piss poor, woe is me attitude. Who cares whether anyone knows what lame training series happened this weekend? I know they didn’t include podium girls or an art exhibit.
We didn’t get into this sport to be seen, we do it because it’s fun.
The RHC is something fresh and new to our scene. Let’s embrace it and have some fun. Aside from Harlem Rocks it was one of the coolest races in NY in a while.
The culture of arrogance in roadies is disgusting. Forget about doping, it probably is this sport’s biggest downfall.

Adrien Rear Entry

Please note that a lot of guys who participated in the Red Hook Crit were roadies. The event was photographed, and posted on a website that serves the entire NYC cycling community, but (let’s face it) mainly roadies.

Also, welcome to NYC. People make fun of each other here, and this website magnifies that by 1000. If your skin isn’t thick enough I would suggest you find a nice midwest city to live in, and/or a different website to frequent.

AB

For all you who might not be in the know, there lots of “real” athletes racing. Cat 1, 2, 3, 4 Cyclocross Racers, Cat 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Road Racers, New York State Track Champs, and even a National Track Champ and Pro Track racer.

Arthur Saddlebag

impossible to comprehend but riding brakeless track bikes actually make this race much safer. can you imagine the pile ups roadies would causing stacking into that chicane.

Lorenzo Rivnut

This looks like it was a fun event. I like the podium girls, nice touch. I also see the winner got paid in cash, a stack of dollar bills is visible in one of the pictures.

Tom Swage

I like that the cat4/hipster/organizer commemorates his birthday by throwing a race and puts his image on the poster wrapped in World Champion stripes.

Maxime Steerer

Looks like a lot of unwashed, smelly dudes. I’ll bet those podium girls went straight home to scrub the Chab stank off of their faces.

Benedetto Tracknut

Holy cow. If you scroll down Arthur Saddlebag is Trimble himself. Can the admins verify the IP address?

FGJ

Dont know him but for one, he races Mtn 1 , Road 3 , CX 2/3, Track and those crazy hipster messenger races. He also organizes races. He is one of the best all around bike riders in NYC (Russian Dan is on that list also). Give the dude some respect for giving alot to the sport.

See you at the CX races.

Tegghiaio Rivnut

Before I moved to NYC, I remember looking at magazines and reading about crazy shit. It looked like the coolest stuff always went on here. That trends always started here.

Here’s why … people have bored friends working in publishing here looking for stories. And they find stories. And the rest of the country doesn’t get that. And they have friends who take cool ass pictures.

But after leaving the city on various tours I got to know the rest of the country. And there is some bad ass stuff going on everywhere. It is just that people don’t have friends at the Times and the Post, and now the web. And the nice thing about bad ass stuff done elsewhere, is that until the advent of Facebook there weren’t a million friends snapping photos and writing articles.

Not to diminish this race, which was pretty cool, but like lots of things in NYC, it has three sides. The side that David sees, namely a cool way to have a birthday. And then the side that New Yorkers see, which will always be this sarcastic boredom. And then finally the side that some kid in Japan sees: jeezus christ, NYC is the friggin bomb.

wheelsucker

“Cat 1, 2, 3, 4 Cyclocross Racers, Cat 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Road Racers, New York State Track Champs, and even a National Track Champ and Pro Track racer.”

Sheesh, so defensive. its not worth trying to justify. if people think its cool, than they can race. otherwise they won’t. who cares? you just sound like a desperate apologist. to try and make it seem legit by inflating the depth of the field is sort of silly. love it for what it is, nothing more. It like when i tell my coworkers that i did “the pro race” last weekend because it was technically P123. silly.

Sam Ergopower

The people request an interview with Trimble, he has more bike racing in his blood than anyone!

Alexandre Grips

people in east futtbuck, middle amuhrca can’t post their “bad ass stuff” on the internet?

what he just said

“It is just that people don’t have friends at the Times and the Post, and now the web”

That is officially the stupidest shit I’ve ever read. What words precede “web”? Hmm, 2 w’s……what could they stand for?

unapologetic east coast liberal elite

a night crit in brooklyn, even in spite of the skinny jeans, is far far FAR cooler than backyard ultimate fighting competitions. it just is.

West Coast Reader

Basically what he said is true, but I blame the inclusion of podium girls, without them the event would of been much less cooler. Unless you’re into sausage-fests.

mikeweb

I was at a party once where most of a junked BMW 2002 was burned in a backyard bonfire. Is that cool?

schmalz

I think I was at that party. It would have been cooler to burn a Mercedes, but a BMW is pretty good.

Tegghiaio Brazeon

The Stuperbowl has been going on since 1999.
Cool shit has goes on all the time outside NYC. We just don’t pay attention.
The Red Hook Crit is a newcomer as far as unsanctioned races go.

Quentin Dry Lube

There are unsanctioned races in nyc that are far older then Stuperbowl.

the reason red hook is getting so much attention (despite being such a young event) is because it is so media and spectator friendly. Like most crits it is easy to watch. Ever try spectating an allycat? I guess you can hang out at the finish and watch people come in but thats about it. And unlike the local racing scene it doesn’t have a crack of dawn start time. All these things add up to lots of people coming out to watch and party. it also just happens to be a really good time. so that helps.
