They do count towards upgrades if you can demonstrate that you beat a field of equal or higher Cat. So for a Cat4 master he automatically scores points since everyone is a 4 of better. For a 3 he would have to show that he beat 3/2/1/pros and enough of them to qualify for points.

Axel Internal Routing

Masters races do not count towards upgrade. It doesn’t make sense, especially when guys upgrade by doing comparatively easier races within category.

NYC leaguer

there is no reason to be a cat 2 unless you want to do bigger races than 1-2-3 races in the parks. if you can conceive of doing the bear mountain p-1-2 race and not getting shelled immediately, or doing a big money crit like iron hill and not getting shelled immediately, then go for it, but otherwise there’s no point except vanity.

Raphael Neck

I thought this sport was mostly about vanity anyway… leg shaving, kit watching, category upgrading, etc.

Hey Honey. Intersting that the womens field couldn’t stay upright at Maltese at all. Multiple pile ups from all teams expcept NYVelocity.

I hope all those women are okay and that they can pay for all the gear they busted up.

Same thing in the 4 race btw. Tons of riders down. Not a single racer from NYVelocity.

We should fix the obvious problems like the potholes that cause flats and have taken down riders. A couple bags of ready mix and water is all you need. Same thing for the large branches that have caused problems. Just bring a saw and hack off the ones that stick out. Don’t hack the bush as the parks dept will not be happy if you do that.

Ridolfo Ceramic

Anyone know if the race photos were posted anywhere? there were at least 2 guys out there shooting.

Bibendum

Ok, lets think outside the box here. What do we think
repaving two lanes of the course would cost? We then find the local elected officials in that district and tell them what a great idea it would be to have a place to have kids ride in total safety. They then get a grant from the gov’t for a “shovel ready” project and we get it done.
The other direction to go is once we find out the cost, if realistic, look to raise money throughout the cycling community. If we can get hit up at fancy parties for the Floyd Fairness Fund, imagine if we actually had a real and worthy cause.
It is only a matter of time till someone gests killed (again) in CP PP or and they shut us down in one or both of those parks. Once repaved, FBF will be the best and safest venue for NYC racers and NYC residents in the area.

Marius Gel

I was under the impression that the issue with improving the surface at floyd was in relation to it being under the care of the national parks as opposed to a city or state facility.

David Lube

yes- if its a national park, one can’t simply repave the road surface. for instance, it wouldn’t be possible for a group of civilians to repave central park.

Marius Gel

On the other hand, it would be fairly easy to drive out with a bucket of concrete ready to go and fill some of the bigger holes quickly before you’re noticed.

If the course was smoother it would attract more guys drag racing in cars, something the parks don’t want. The non-smooth course isn’t what causes the crashes. Money would be better spent cutting back the bushes and grass.

weed

Cutting back bushes and grass? Messing with Park’s wild life? I’m sure there is a nice rule with a penalty for that. If you cut the branches a bit, some riders will just get closer, it never fails. The only way riders seem to learn is after they crash, go figure. Crashes at FBF this season were all caused by riders lack of attention to each other and to inanimate objects.

Axel Steerer

There are no crashes in those races caused by the potholes — the course conditions add to the attrition and the toughness of the race, something that’s benefited me elsewhere. Which, of course, is something a “training race” like this should do.

And I would be against cutting back the bushes and trees — FBF is first and foremost a wildlife refuge, not the Mapei cycling academy.

The crashes this year were mostly caused by touching wheels — which means the crashes were a question of skill, not conditions. You can ride over the weeds growing out of the concrete seams between turns 2 and 3 — they only look scary. I know Somerville crashed last year from catching a branch, but again, that’s a matter of picking your line.

a

i wasn’t advocating for cutting the bushes, just saying if you’re looking to improve saftey at FBF, that makes more sense than paving. i don’t want FBF to change at all (except i liked the old finish better – less mosquitoes)

Rinaldo Housing

a question…if you hit a pothole and go down, can you retain Lucarelli & Castaldi to sue the National Parks Service?

in all seriousness i know of at least one crash which was directly caused by a pothole… which yanked the bars right out of the rider’s hands and led to a broken collarbone. This was during a straight section between turn 1 and 2. Also having potholes in the corners in turns 2 and 4 forces riders to take a line they wouldn’t normally take and although i personally can’t remember it happening it’s easy to see how a sudden adjustment while cornering could lead to a crash. i’m not sure if just cornering over those potholes leaned over would take you down but i wasn’t about to find out the hard way.

Wheelducker

he must be out training instead of reading this site or he wouldn’t have a livestrong bracelet on.

Daan Ziptie

You’ll be that douche that ruins the best venue to race in all of NYC (possible the country – even the world) for all of us. Don’t be that guy. DON’T BE THAT GUY!!

Attorney for the Rider:
“caused by a pothole… which yanked the bars right out of the rider’s hands and led to a broken collarbone.”

Attorney for the Pothole:
“The pothole was innocent I tell you, minding his own business, only getting dizzy watching riders who for most part were also watching him, over and over, when finally a rider, most likely because he didn’t know or forgot or ignored the pothole, wedged his wheel into the pothole. The pothole suffered some trauma but mostly pleasure.”

Judge’s ruling:
“The accident was caused by the rider’s weak grip on the bars… which let the bars slip out of the rider’s hands and led to a broken collarbone.”

f man

I don’t think you would have a case against them, as you aren’t using the road for it’s intended purpose and i’m sure the contract with charlie stipulates that they aren’t responsible.

Ruben Internal Routing

regardless. Case or not, the Parks dept. won’t want the hassle and expense from answering even what turns out to be a frivolous suit.
I think you should go after the bar and bartape manufacturer.
Or join a chess club and quit riding your bike.

Joe Public (Duh!)

Cool win, looks like you have been training this year. It might be time to finally upgrade to the 2s.

Rinaldo Housing

after my question about L&C suing the parks service, i wrote “in all seriousness…”

i guess the joke didn’t make it over the intertubes.

rhubarb

why wouldn’t FBF races count towards an upgrade? You’re racing in your category.

I hear of reps in other districts counting masters races any way. Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was some consistency in USAC.

schmalz

I’ve always heard that masters races don’t count towards upgrading. Plus, I’m not sure I need to be a two anyway.

Wheelsucker

Sadly, after years of honing his cycling skills, Dan has withered his upper body down so much that he is now unable to hoist a trophy with just one arm. He won it, he just can’t lift it.

Wheelsucker

congrat Dan, I’m sure Lance will make a copy and hang it on his mantle…
nice clothing rack ad display…
and for my final act, the helicopter will lift me off the ground as I maintain my death drip on this thophy…

best photo ever! Should be on NYVC T sherbert!!!

Imagine you make necklace out of thophy and wear at beach all pasty pale cycling tan, except you train in basement on gerbel wheel!!!

All the best Dan! Very Nice (I like…)

Wheelsucker

“Above all, I would like to sincerely thank my freakishly large right leg, which was an organ donation by one of FBF’s early crash victim this season.”

MQ

Alright my Peeps I need a favor. Im looking for an old operating system.
leopard. just leopard. No snow..just leopard.
let me know if you can help

Antoine Flange

Charlie’s races really swing the big bats with the cool prizes and big trophies. Nxt season the floyd races will see every hump with two wheels reg’n up.
