Off-Topic for 12/21/2009 – 02:10

Welcome to the Tue, 12/21/2009 – 02:10 edition of Off Topic! You are looking at the next step in the evolution of VCN, the Off-Topic page. Have you ever been frustrated because you had a burning desire to call someone a sandbagger and could only hope to be timely by posting your comment to a photo gallery page or on a page describing a charity ride?

Well, your prayers have been answered! You can post your comment from the home page and it magically comes to rest here with the other orphans from the land of Misfit Comments. The page gets refreshed every day, but not to worry! Each day’s page will be archived and treasured, so you can look back on past pages with pride, shame or disgust-depending on how the day’s conversation went. So post away! We’ve got an internet to fill up.

I’m annoyed about the cost of the race. Is it justified? Any chance for a coordinated protest?
And is the route the same as last year with the dangerous descents on gravel? I’m not sure it’s worth it. I spent a weekend there last year for an unsupported flat at mile 30, right next to a woman who went to the hospital after she flew like a rag doll on gravel.
What do you think?

I think you should stay at home during B’kill race weekend, put your bike on the windtrainer & ride it, and be sure to pad the floor surrounding the area of your bike/windtrainer setup with pillows or mattresses in case you fall off. Can’t be too safe.

Dara

Yeah, I could stay home. Thanks. I want to do the race, but have 2 concerns. Would someone please explain why the race fee is so high? And is Dieter considering the route from previous years that had more hard-pack ascents?

Mathys Stiff

i think the race fee is higher because he will be using microchips to collect results. thereby avoiding the mishaps from last year.

not sure about the course changes, but i am sure that information is available on the anthem racing website.

i know which gravel section you are talking about, i nearly ate shit there, managed to stay up, but say about 3-4 riders heading for the trees.

There are many challenges to every race. To compete without race support is unimaginable at Paris-Roubaix, or any pro level race. Please take into account all the race course variables, including your skill and motivation. Battenkill is not for everyone. There’s a reason every year the debate turns to wheels, tires and bike set up. It is unique, plus throw in spring weather challenges…on and on…
Have fun either way! Finishing is tough enough.

I take full responsibility for poor tire choice–and I know that it’s part of racing.
Gravel descents in a pack are a crap shoot. I’ll do my best to avoid crowds. But hard-pack flats and climbs would give technically-skilled riders a chance to show their stuff too.

I heard Schmalz lifted one of the “premium” lavs from Floyd this summer and they got Mark Purdy to retrofit with a coin drop and bill slot feeder (live blogged by Shen) and he is dying to put it to use – not to mention getting full use out of the family wagon.
