Welcome to the Tue, 04/26/2011 – 06:00 edition of Off Topic! You are looking at the next step in the evolution of VCN, the Off-Topic page. Have you ever been frustrated because you had a burning desire to call someone a sandbagger and could only hope to be timely by posting your comment to a photo gallery page or on a page describing a charity ride?
Well, your prayers have been answered! You can post your comment from the home page and it magically comes to rest here with the other orphans from the land of Misfit Comments. The page gets refreshed every day, but not to worry! Each day’s page will be archived and treasured, so you can look back on past pages with pride, shame or disgust-depending on how the day’s conversation went. So post away! We’ve got an internet to fill up.
this blows
“Palisades Parkway entrance” to Kanawauke Circle? Is that the exit of the Lake Welch Parking lot (usual start) or are we starting at the bottom of the hill near the actual exit/entrance of the Pallisades Parkway?
I’m guessing that the start will be from the traditional location at the Lake Welch pkg lot – go downhill to the haripin turn (entrance to the PIP) and come back up Lake Welch pkwy (like last spring), turn onto 7 Lakes, but turnaround at Kanawauke Circle. From the bottom of the hairpin to the traffic circle and back should be about 14 miles
All those turns frighten and confuse me. After all, I’m just a caveman cyclist.
last Spring we actually took a left out of the Lake Welch parking lot and went to 7 lakes drive–then came down hill to hairpin and then back up hill–so the question is do we start with neutral down the hill or 12 miles of rollers towards 7 lakes?
starting the race with the downhill would be dumb.that was always the worst part about the full course. last year the start went toward Sebago and the downhill and climb were at the end of each lap. if they put the finish at the top of the climb, it would make it a real climbers race, no one else need apply.
who won bear last year? anything fun happen to watch out for? who’s the marked rider? who’s sandbagging? who’s blood spinning this week in preparation?
Having the hill after the neutral start decent is the best way to do it so you have a selection from going up the hill. The next time down instead of the full Cat 4 field decending the hill together you only have maybe half or less. Separeates the wheat fromt he chaff early.
I don’t understand why there are two women’s fields that are barely filled up, but not an additional cat 4 field, which, due to the overwhelming number of riders on the waitlist, is obviously warranted. What about the P12 race, for that matter?
Poorly handled situation.
No, having two womens fields will be great. Then we can post more videos on youtube of the descent like the one from Battenkill! A big field of 5-10 women all crashing themselves out. Exciting!
2x the women for anything is a good thing.
Unless current wives, in which case that’s complicated.

It’s pretty figging remarkable that Van Dunk would post a race without any explanation what the format is and with inexplicable prizes. B.A.T.?
At least the fives get a throphy.
He’ll express genuine confusion the morning of the race when no one shows up.
AVD did a good job explaining it at the start of the Spring Series race this past Sunday. Prizes are given to the top teams, not individuals. So if 1, 2, 3, 4 is a Mengoni, Mengoni, United and Foundation prizes are given to 1st place team Mengoni, second place team United, and third placed team Foundation. He gave a breakdown of the prize list and number of placings. I forgot the details except first place gets $500. He also explained that there was no restrictions on the number of riders that a team can enter. Finally B.A.T. = Big Ass Trophy. It sounds like it could be fun, and a little different.
