The Hangover 9/11/06

Section head text.

Bear results here.

Bernard Van Ulden wins Bear. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Peter Salon with a nice 3rd, Westwood with 3 top tens. Let’s just cut and paste a “Navigators win everything” and use it often.

Jeff King (check the comments section) finishes in 15th, but behind Longacre. Britney weeps, Mihael will have to perform some degrading act in apology. If you must degrade Mihael, I would suggest basting him in lavender beforehand.

‘So there’ Sauvayre keeps chugging along.

Kudos to Olsen and Wolfe (and Quintero?) for racing up and finishing strong.

Craig Cook’s kids keep doing well. Not only does ‘Truman’ Caputi finish 2nd, he gives us a reason to tease O’Malley. Outsprinted by a junior with gear restrictions? “Beat by a junior” – sounds like my freshman year.

Another nice result for Elena Leznik. Someone’s gotta come along and break the laughing ladies stranglehold.

Mike Green gets the shirt of shame, for picking Kaplan and predicting good finishes for Olsen and Wolfe.

I just can’t keep up this facade of caring about Bear results anymore, I wasn’t there and therefore the race didn’t happen in my mind. In fact there are many things that do not happen in my mind, such as elections, judicial decisions, and personal hygiene.

Pics coming soon, as soon as Marco finds the rip cord.

Also, Delroy Walters ripped it up at Master’s Track Nationals. Results here, here, and here.

And we’re still keeping it clean and positive! Except for J King.

Mihael: I finished the whole 84 freaking miles of Bear Mountain yesterday. It wasn’t pretty and I didn’t come close to wining, but I finished. I think you owe me an apology… I am waiting.

Blake: I tried to beat you but I couldn’t; I have to say that you go uphill really well. You dropped me most times up the climb and the last time it was for good. Actually, I know you already know that because I could see you looking back at me as you pushed the pace the 6th time up that hill. I had fun joking with you and racing against you. I also thought it was really cool of you to share your water with me on the last lap when I ran out; true sportsman.

So, I guess I owe you a lame excuse now. I was looking around my apartment last night for something good. My bike was fine so all I could find was that my vitamins are due to expire in a couple years. So that is my excuse "My vitamins were getting a bit old and they didn’t give me the proper nutrients I needed".

I’ll see you in spin class. You don

Petacchi breaks hand after punching bus

from Velonews.com

By Staff and wire reports
This report filed September 10, 2006

Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi has pulled out of the Vuelta a Espana with a broken finger after punching the Lampre team bus following a row with Danilo Napolitano, organizers said late Sunday.

Petacchi believed Napolitano, who finished third in Sunday’s 15th stage, had blocked him on the final run-in. After fruitless complaints to race officials, Petacchi continued the dispute with the Lampre team, ultimately punching the side of the rival team’s bus and breaking his finger in the process.

Mihael

Wow!, I can’t belive a moose such as Jeff could climb so well. First he proves me wrong by being able to ride the wind and make the podium in a Floyd classic this spring, now this. F@#&! and word is he trains less the Mr. Molloy. FU Jeff!

Orcutt

I was DQ’d by an official near the finish line who never spoke to me. The official apparently (anonymously) posted the reason on another page on this site this morning explaining it was for riding up to the feed zone after the finish (taking further refuge in the third person, "the officials had no choice…"). Fair enough, though if someone had said something I would’ve gotten off my bike, and it’s a shame to see race officials acting like just more anonymous trash on this site.

Congrats to Anthony O’Malley for initiating the winning move and getting on the Bear Mtn podium!!

I watched the finish of the Men’s 4 race in my rearview mirrors. This is how I saw it, I hope its accurate, I apologize to anyone if its not how they remember it.

On the last lap, Kim Riseth (Adler) was first out of the hairpin and proceeded to put in a very strong move all the way up Tiorati, accompanied by a guy in an Amino Vital kit (I think). They stayed away for the whole climb, thru the first roundabout and for a short distance down Seven Lakes Drive. I could see the field chasing, and it looked like Chris Shaw did the bulk of the work bringing that move back. Just as they got reeled back, Anthony O’Malley went away solo, and the pack failed to show this move the respect it deserved. Dan Hoffman from Westwood came across the widening gap after the Kenawaukee roundabout and the two proceeded to pad their lead all the way to the Sebago hairpin. By my rough count, the O’Malley had 32 seconds on the field at the base of the last climb (the bottom of Lake Welch Parkway). Pascal Caputi put in a big effort up the short climb to begin his bridge attempt. It must’ve been massive because he closed half the distance to the front pair by the top of the hill, with the eventual winner Kevin Keane in tow. O’Malley and Hoffman were going as hard as they could at that point, trying to stay ahead of the closing pair. It looked like it really, really hurt. Caputi and Keane caught the leaders just before the feed zone, and the foursome was then well clear of the pack (or what was left of it.) At that point, I had to leave them behind to clear the road for the sprint, maybe O’Malley will give us a few words on the last 1K.

shaw

the juniors were awesome yesterday. nice job guys. i started to go with caputi when he bridged, got five pedal strokes in, cramped up completely – race over. the pack must have been totally cooked cause nobody did anything after that.

best post race quote "juniors don’t produce lactic acid"

DQ

Orcutt – the officials were explicit about riding backwards on the course post-race. I hear your pain and sympathize, but no one needed to say anything after the lecture at the start line, which was very emphatic, my man. Certainly scared me enough not to attempt any bottle recovery post race.

Orcutt

I’m actually not pained since my placing was nothing worth mentioning, and I don’t dispute I rode up the edge of the road while no one was coming down it (and I guess I missed the big speech) but I would rather be DQ’d to my face rather than by some furtive number-taker or an anonymous on-line lame-ass.

heading back on the course

The way the officials explained it, we were not allowed to ride backwards against traffic through the start finish. If we did we’d be DQ’d. The official starting my field said that before the start and I imagine every field got the same speech.

That’s pretty clear – the finish stretch, in addition to being full of racers going 35+ mph that the officials are trying to watch, is also a one-way road.

To get to the feedzone, you could just go the way a car does – out the parking lot, right turn (the only possible way to go legally) then the first left to a U-turn heading back up the course on the other side of the island. That doesn’t interfere with the race in any way and would be fine.

Coming back you’d have to get off your bike several hundred yards before the finish and walk it in the grass.

It’s also possible (but tedious) to go out the back entrance of the parking lot, take a rigth (I think) and follow that road to the course — it enters the course about a K before the feedzone. But almost no one knows about that.

Eugene

Getting a DQ for something that didn’t happen in the race is a piss-poor penalty. His result was hard-earned, and it should only be taken away if he obtained it unfairly. Whether it was announced or not, it’s not a proper way of dealing with a potential problem. The officials should have a different way of handling it, without affecting the outcome of the race– the outcome of a race should be decided by the events of the race itself.

Littering jerks

I understand the reasons behind Orcutt’s DQ, but I’d rather see more emphasis placed on littering. Orcutt is no longer at the finish line, but those empty gels will be on the road for weeks at least.

ETridehome

O’Mailley – Congratulations! Also to Olsen, Aaron and others who moved up to 3 race and did well.
And of course, to our own Shaw who has been so darn consistent all season.

Alex R

re:Orcutt DQ

I was there. I saw what happened. Jon was riding backwards on the course. The official tried to talk to him, but he ignored her. I can’t say if it was intentional or not on his part.

Litter

I litter quite a bit in races — but do it in places I can pick it up afterwards and that aren’t really obnoxious. On a circuit like Harriman it’s easy — toss stuff in the feedzone and go back later (watch how you get there though). For me, it’s mainly bottles to toss — I just carry the empty gel packets.

adm

Nice race yesterday to the guys in the 3 field. Fun way to end the season, even if the middle two laps were like a ladies Cat 5 race.

Haters – – yes, I’m a cat 3. I know you don’t care about any of this (except for the Orcutt DQ, that’s the sort of thing you probably like). But until you start posting about all the non-NRC 1/2 races you don’t win, we don’t have much else to talk about on this site on Mondays.

O'M

Thanks to all who raced at Bear yesterday.

Great job Greg Olsen and Rashad too.

Kim did a fantastic job on the first climb as did Filip Cappala.

It was an epic race and the juniors wers stellar in their attacks, sprinting and climbing. 2nd and 1st were well deserved given that they bridged massively to me and Hoffman (also great job).

Patrick Littlefield’s race report is a pristine piece of race commentary and as far as I was concerned, with 200 meters to go I was seeing DOUBLE!

So I tried to grab a wheel, while spinning out a 53/11 and ended up having little left for the final 50 meters.

I heard that some folk got sick on one of the uphills…. and people were taking bets as to whether "O’malley’s move would stick!"

Thanks to all who partook and thanks to all my tyeam mates on JA.

Jay you rock!!!

Ugly

Dimitri – Excellent ride at the cat 4/5 Phillipsburg Crit!!!

This guy went HARD – solo break from laps 3 – 12 w/ 30 sec+ gap, then sat up for the field catch. During his solo the chase split the field in two and shredded everything. On the final leg, Dimitri jumped the remaining group(maybe 10 guys) and won the sprint. Nice work!

Anthony, Olsen, Kim – way to make the fatties like me proud!

Orcutt

Re: Alex R.

I definitely would never knowingly blow off an official trying to talk to me. Eric Ragot was working the finish area and he asked me not to go through the start line and I did that. I appreciate what officials do and think some of them bring a lot to the fun and camraderie of race events.

Kevin Keane

All sprint finishes seem to be a combination of luck, natural ability, and preparation. The Irish God’s were smiling yesterday. The CAT 4 race could have easily gone to O’Malley, Caputi, or Hoffman. Thanks for a great race and incredible displays of sportsmanship afterwards. I sincerely hope to see you all on the roads soon.

O'M

Kevin Keane,

The Irish/Celtic Gods were smiling indeed. Well deserved win, especially with that bridging of a large gap.

Keane junior will be a future TdeF winner, the way he was climbing that podium after the race.

Also your email if possible? And Paul Walsh, Dublin team mate of yours, how can I contact him?

And of course for our own NYVC Kendall "Duende"Dwyer for finishing in the top 7, both in the Spring and Fall season.
Too good for first year racer?!! Now TOP that!

K King - VB

Hey O’Malley- What happened to the 54×9?!

From the looks of it you had a great ride now you just gotta close the deal.

DQ

Orcutt – the officials were explicit about riding backwards on the course post-race. I hear your pain and sympathize, but no one needed to say anything after the lecture at the start line, which was very emphatic, my man. Certainly scared me enough not to attempt any bottle recovery post race.

Chris M

Well, I can only speak for myself and note that a) I was too lazy up climb 1 from the back and had to bridge a gap with some other guys, and 2) got confused at feed zone lap 2 – dropped a bottle, got integrated with masters riders and ended up gapped by not realizing the riders around me (going slower) were masters ’till I was down 20-30 secs. Huge bummer.

Thing is, I doubt I would have been top 5 yesterday even if I hadnt screwed up, given the overall pace and the hard bridge work on lap 1. HUGE kudos to O’Malley for showing his strong form and attacking so hard, and to the whole bunch up front that held the pace up most of the race. Im also way impressed by Olsen and Wolfe for their Cat 3 efforts… Nice day and great racing spirit shown by all! What a fun sport.

Orcutt – sorry to be a pill on my post – Id be pissed too if no one said anything to me. They should def say something first before the "ultimate penalty" is hammered down, that is v. true…

Cat 4 powertap data for the climb - front group

Starting at the u-turn and ending 2.7 miles later — on my data that’s where the effort declined. As you can see, unlike the spring race where climb 1 was easier than 2 & 3, here we started harder and backed off a little each subsequent lap.

1 — 9:56 time, 16.3 avg speed, 332 watts avg
2 — 10:16 time, 15.7 avg speed, 326 watts avg
3 — 10:29 time, 15.5 avg speed, 314 watts avg
4 — 10:52 time, 14.9 avg speed, 290 watts avg

I weigh 172 pounds — wattage would be less for most other riders.

Orcutt

Chris – my main point is that the "ultimate penalty" is not too effective for anything other than satisfying official pique if the person doesn’t realize they are getting it or why. I only know about it because of some anonymous post on this web-site. Imagine if I did something other than hang around this computer all day.

4 Race

You guys in the lead bunch really hit it on that first climb. About 20 of us got organized on Seven Lakes and worked together to catch the lead group at the feed station, just in time to get shot off the back again on climb 2, LOL! Thanks for the welcome to Cat 4, now I know what I need to work on this winter. No complaints, all in all, a good day.

Wow those climb times for lap 1 are interesting, especially when comparing to Spring. Kim and Fillip were the main reason for Climb 1’s pace, 3 mins or more slower in spring….
12:40
263W/294W…. thanks for the data!

olsen

9:56 for that first climb for the 4 race?! WOW!! We crushed it up that hill on Lap 2 in the spring and I THOUGHT we were flying then. Based on Ben’s numbers from the spring, it turns out to be a minute slower than lap 1 yesterday!! Holy schneikies!!! Anyone in the top 10 has much to be proud of. (I am so glad I did the 3 race).

JST

I saw Justin Brown going up that climb, then coming right back. The dude seemed to lose weight over the year but Bear isn’t even that steep. He should be able to complete a race like this with the main group it before upgrading on sprint races, a lot of big guys and gals do it in harder Cats every year. What happened NYVC?

Aaron

Here’s what I have for the climbs in the 3s, sorry, no power. I’m starting from where I began pedaling at the bottom to 2.7 miles up the hill.

Orcutt — sorry about the DQ. I wonder if the guy who spoke before the race is the same person in the CAT 4 field. Some of us were frowning when the he informed us of the strict double yellow line and riding against traffic after the finish line, b/c he did not sound like the most friendliest of the bunch—but at least for a teammate of mine and I, we got the message pretty clearly. He even mentioned the possibility of DQ your team, the field and the whole race…The message was pretty clear. Police officers being there, I don’t think org cared whether there were cars/bikers coming or not. It was a rules that we were asked to obey so that we can race finish the and race again in the future. It’s a bummer that you did not recognize the organizer calling your attention, and perhaps she could have still gone up to you and given you warning – absolutely. But As far as the rules go, I think it was laid down hard and clear.

Does anyone have any power data from the cat. 3 race. If you do what is your weight? My powertap was broken yesterday, so I have no data from the race. It seemed like the race stayed together pretty well until the 4th time up the climb? I am surprised so few riders were placed in the final results. It seemed like it stuck together more than that? A couple of us up front set a pretty steady tempo during the 4th and 5th climb. I would guess around 350 watts or so (165 lbs)? Is that when a lot of riders fell off? No attacks though on the climb- just steady tempo. Except the last lap, where there was an attack and small group break over the top for 6 miles or so. I thought that would be the winning break bu disorganization got in the way.

JST
Noted, and point taken. I need to keep working on my base level of fitness. As this is my first year on the bike I’m lacking that endurance base and am better suited to circuit races and crits. I did much better at GMSR last week than at bear. I feel a little burnt out to be honest. Try racing all year being calorically deprived, not fun (I did lose 55 lbs though). I got smoked on that 1st climb no other way to put it. That pace was just to fast for me.

"Yeah, I just rode at my own pace up Tiorati..."

"..and at the top only a few guys were left."

The beauty of this statement is that it works when you crush the field and also when you get dropped hard.

Where's my money

(you know who you are) how about putting that prize money towards buying some new handlebars in that crash you caused the Park.

A caveat on Ben's data

1) Regarding the time to top, I’m not sure what distance Ben measured the climb as — it’s a judgment call since there’s still a little effort on the bumps at the top.

2) Ben is only 158 pounds. Assuming 20 pounds for bike and water, his peak climb averaging 305 watts and weighing 178 pounds total is equivalent to me doing 329 watts at 192 pounds total, which is about what I put out on the 1st climb. In other words, except for the first slow climb in the spring race, it looks like the both races were actually pretty similar effort.

Not hating...

Yeah a bunch of us are still have scuffed levers, seats, handlebars, scars and dislocated shoulders…not to mention hospital bills.
Great work (you know who you are) You deserve the podium spot, but remember quite a few of us are still smarting after that incident.

Will Riffelmacher

Hey, I did have an SRM for the race. I tried to keep it nice and even- I’ll post the numbers later tonight. I didn’t keep track of splits, but I think it should be easy to spot the climb in the file.
Thanks- I’ll get the numbers up as soon as I can.

Jay F.

Any of you who have a problem with O’Malley, why don’t you post your names or contact him directly with your issues? I think if you asked some of the people seriously involved in the crash how O’Malley responded to them and any issues they may have had, they would let you know how big a person O’Malley can be.

Or, you can just be the pussies you are and snipe at him on these boards as seems to be par for the course.

just to give him some props – i think the blank in 12th place in the 4’s was Lewis Almonte. he was definitely up there with us.

i think i could eat some of those juniors and still be hungry. they climb like fleas.

Great result not only by Aaron in the 3 race, but to Chris Cummings (brand new 3) and Matt Serra (also a 4) of Edgemont as well. They were at the front of the race for all 5 laps and Matt was able to catch back on after a flat. Very solid showing for a very solid team.

Not a crash...

One of the guys descending and leaning heavy on the brake (the burnt rubber stank) blew a tire with a loud ‘pop’. I know because I was one of the wimps hanging in the back….

Ok so all those people who said Aaron should upgrade and do the three race, what can say now? I think we have showed through out the season that we are a presence anywhere we go at any race! Olsen thanks for the comment. It was a fun race.Go Edgemont

Univest

Any info. I heard Eugene Boronow flatted, chased for 8 or 10 miles and made it back, but he mustve popped later. Sakonnet got one guy to finish. Looked hard

Matt S

Thanks for the props Olsen, you were riding like a machine all race, I knew you would have a good punch at the end for a well deserved second place. My flat, or should I say, flats, took a good bit out of me and I was unable to finish the race after I was dropped on the fourth time up Tiorati. The first flat was had after the second ascent of Tiorati on the flat section after the roundabout, and I was able to make it back to the group a few miles later, and had a bit of time to recover for the third time up. Third time went decently and I was getting back into a groove, until once we hit that steady uphill section in the middle of the course is when I received yet another flat. I got back to the group again thankfully after another wobbly eyed effect type of effort, and had about 2 miles to recover before the fourth Tiorati which just put me in my grave. It was a great race up until then and I’m sad that I couldn’t finish it off. Great racing by everyone, I love seeing fellow locals popping blood vessels to get up these ridiculous hills.

cummings

while i still have access:

great job olsen and rashad for kicking ass all year, and too everyone who has raced from march to oct.

"Ok so all those people who said Aaron should upgrade and do the three race, what can say now?"

Maybe that they were right and he doesn’t belong with the 4’s?

Nico

To the guy who was frowning at hearing about the strict yellow line rule, a few years ago I think the whole P12 field was DQ’d when too many guys were going over the yellow line and the police shut it down. Or something like that anyway.

Yellow beez a fan

what the heck happened to the rest of the teams? NyVelocity? I could’ve swore they were the favs for Bear. And who would’ve thought Olsen who won in Spring..would get another podium in the 3’s. Adler just rocked it. Are we gonna gonna have a Adler pro team? Adler team bus? Adler T-shirts for the fans?

Need Masters Times, Please

Apparently "Big Guy Group" had some technical difficulties and dropped the ball with the race results. It doesn’t seem that detailed results will be forthcoming.

I’m just getting back into the sport and was hoping to get some useful info from this race as a training benchmark. I bonked on lap 4 and wobbled in at 3:15:30 and did not get credit for a finish. . . or perhaps was disqualified for riding my bike backwards in the grass? ;–) Anyway, If any master (from anywhere in the field, the more the better) could post their race # and their finish time (or e-mail it to me in confidentiality), it would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks in advance. George (georgegilliland@yahoo.com)

Question for Will Riff

Will Amazing race, and unsurprisingly, you have some amazing power numbers. One question though. Why did you go so early. Was is for Roger? To show the field what you could do? Did you think it could work?

Thanks

JST

Eugene

Someone asked about Univest–

You heard right: I flatted, chased, caught, then popped. Our guys, Gavi, Lisban, and Alberto (www.gsmengoniusa.com/roster.htm) were among the few who arrived in-town with the main field. Shortly after, only Gavi was left. He would have finished respectably, but had a major gastro-intestinal issue with about 10 miles to go.

Justin (actually in not just Visiting Britain)

Hey O’Malley – nice work. I think whats more impressive is not so much the result – though well done on that – but the fact that you actually put your money where your mouth is and really went for the win. That takes alot of guts as so often Cat 4 races come down to people not wanting to sacrifice their top 10 for a shot at glory. so well done – have a guiness on me!

Justin

Eugene

"You mean he (Gavi) shat himself ?"

Narrowly avoided. He ran into a house on the course (where they were watching the event on TV), and asked to use the toilet. It was more gentlemanly than the former suggestion.

Will Riffelmacher

It was for Roger, although I didn’t expect to be out for that long. I figured that I small group would bridge up and then we could have at least two guys in the lead group and be in a good position going to the line. I thought the move might work when I came through the feed zone with one to go…oh well.

so it’s way past when anyone would be paying attention, but i kept forgetting to post a story of non-partisan brotherly love from the race. i’m on adler and was having a terrible time trying to catch the pack after getting dusted on the hill on lap 1, when anthony accardi buzzed by with a pack of 7 or 8 on his wheel and i hopped a ride. come the 3rd lap, i was in much the same spot for much the same reason, and had given up all hope of redemption when i felt a friendly slap on the back. anthony was solo this time and was happy to have me and a friend jump on his coattails for another ride. though i wasn’t able to stay with him this time around, i wanted to give him the shout-out for looking out for another rider despite the difference in colors. there’s a lot of bullshite on this site and it’s good to know that there’s a lot more love on the road. thanks again, anthony.
