The Hangover 8/16

CRChampions crowned

In Central Park on Saturday, Gavi Epstein of Foundation won decisively to take the Men’s A CRCA Club Championship. He was followed by Jeff Ingraham of Jonathan Adler Racing and Dan Zmolik of Axa Equitable. Sarah Sauvayre of Comedy Central-Sid’s defeated Ann Marie Miller of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez for the Women’s Club championship, with Ashley Prine of Radical Media coming third. Victory in the B’s went Arthur Roulac of Houlihan-Lokey/Sanchez, in a race marred by a crash; in this accident-prone season, once again we wish the victims a speedy recovery. Michael Parkes of CRCA won the C race. Details here.

Meanwhile in Prospect Park, no official results yet for Saturday’s Blistered Butt race, but an anonymous contributor helpfully provided this in the Comments section: “Prospect Park P-1-2-3 results are in… It was a five man breakaway…gone for roughly 1/2 the race. Tony of Zephyr got popped from the breakaway with about 2 laps to go…so it was down to 4 guys in the breakaway…the 4 guys were Fraklin Burgos, Leigh Sorrells, Stephan Dioslaki and Rapheal Meran…coming around with around a 1/2 mile to go, Burgos jumped and got a gap….Dioslaki closed it…then Meran jumped but Leigh closed it…heading closer to the line, it was Leigh then Dioslaki then Meran and then Burgos…Dioslaki jumped hard to go for it with less than 1/4 mile to go…Meran was the only one that was able to maintain contact…coming in to the line it was Dioslaki slightly ahead of Meran…then side by side with Meran…and then at the last moment a bike throw and it was Meran that took the win…so it ended up: Rapheal Meran of Mengoni in first; Stephan Dioslaki of Metra in second; Franklin Burgos in third, Leigh Sorrells of Fioradifrutta in fourth.” In Central Park on Sunday, Karl Rahn won the Masters 40+ race. Full results to come. No results yet for the HELP: Prospect Park Fundraiser.

Up north in Ravena, Westwood Velo’s Roger Aspholm won the NY Capital Region Road Race Pro 1/2/3’s, with Brian Breach of G.S. Mengoni taking second place and Chris Leong of CRCA/BH-Garneau in fourth. At the Altamont Criterium, CRCA/Jonathan Adler Racing pulled a near hat-trick in the Men’s Pro/1/2/3’s: Greg Olsen won, followed by Anthony Hall, with Christopher Chaput in fourth. Full results for both races are here.

Another Old Rider

I don’t know him at all but there is no denying he has had a very impressive season. I suspect he is a good guy but who cares? I also suspect a lot of great athletes are dicks. We generally admire them for their athletic achievements not their personalities.

who was in a break? I hear she always does that…If she wants to win all the time at all cost…why does she just race in her own kit?

“It’s hard to describe the pain and torture that you go through on a ride like that,” Leipheimer said. “It’s not what I’m used to. It’s like a six-hour time trial. There’s no sitting in. There’s no draft. … I just couldn’t wait for it to be over.”

Does that mean it was like a 10 hour TT for David?

Awesome ride Dave.

BH fan

Quietly he is becoming one of the best riders in NYC, 4th place at Capitol beating guys like Sean Smith after upgrading to the 2s not too long ago, and he started this season as a 4!

If there’s anyone out there that’s pre-regged in the P-1-2 race for this Saturday’s Mengoni Grand Prix who for whatever reason cannot make it, I’d like to buy out your spot…please let me know.

Thanks – Steve

Another quality rider to come out the NYVelocity program. Who’s next? Perhaps Andrew Clerico? He went from Cat 5 to Cat 3 in just this season.

Amerigo Bottle

hey “steve” how would anyway let you know if they didn’t want to race on saturday? you’ve given no information besides your very common first name.

Daan Ziptie

Sean Smith’s blog couldn’t have been douchier. Either way, Leong still bested him, and Roger dropped him Saturday . . . plus wasn’t Smith a pro mountain bike racer before road racing?

seriously

gee whiz, i can’t imagine why a team director would ignore what i’m sure was a very humbly-written letter asking to be considered for a spot on a team.

call Steve’s cell @ 973-296-2568 if there’s anyone out there that’s pre-regged in the P-1-2 race for this Saturday’s Mengoni Grand Prix who for whatever reason cannot make it. I’d like to buy out your spot…please let me know.

Take it easy on Sean, sometimes tone can be misinterpreted in a blog post, for instance, many people on this site think I’m both sober and un-slow.

but you are clearly drunk and quick witted, and he is opening himself up for criticism. Posting that you are “begging” to ride with riders of similar ability, that there is only 1 team good enough for you etc, etc… if it quacks like a dick….

“In retrospect, I see a few things I should’ve considered during the race, and think I could’ve done better had things gone differently. One, when I saw Jeremy was one of the guys in the break I should’ve thought ahead and known he would not be able to hang with us in the hills”

Riiiight, I’m sure that’s what Lars Boom was thinking about Powers at the Tour of California:

A real good local dirt racer but not a pro- he did a couple of the 100 mile races with varying success but not any of the true bread and butter MTB races. He won the DH40 but that is not “real” mountain bike course- smooth and swoopy. A fun place to race/ride but not a real technical mountain bike race.

Nice guy.

Sacha Butyl

…you should read more of his reports. Actually sounds like a decent down to earth guy. Don’t let the jealousy influence your comments….

At least Sean is smart enough to know that Champ Sys ain’t where it’s at. His assessment seems fair. Axa and Foundation are fighting to win season honors in USACrits. Everyone else is fighting to win Chuckie I. Cheese.

I read the post. I don’t see the problem. I don’t think I’ve ever met the guy, but he’s obviously got loads of talent, and needs some help capitalising on that talent. Cut him some slack.

not in me.just my opinion…we had a hand full of guys the accomplished the same.it only makes me proud that is a local kid from new york.with that said he’s still racing the same venues as us.I just think the cycling is the most humbling sport of all.is one thing to go from cat 5 to 1 in the city witch is still amazing.but to brag and say how easy it was? best wishes to him, hope he finds a team the can provide him with all he needs to be the best he can be.

It’s good to be back on the dark side.

Like last time, the majority here are either clueless or dead wrong. Last time I was a sandbagger, etc etc. Now I’m an arrogant egotistical dick (all true, btw)

Around these necks of the woods, honesty is frowned upon and sarcasm and joking is clearly ignored or misinterpreted, probably due to my cat 5 writing skills as someone so creatively put.

And for whoever says the dh40 is smooth and swoopy clearly didn’t ride the same race I did. The gloves were seemingly welded to my hands by the end of the race from so much heat build up getting tossed around on all the rocks and roots, but maybe that’s because I was riding a bike with no suspension. And, to top it all off, I’m not even a ‘real good local dirt racer’ because I’ve only raced one local NYC race my entire life. I’ve raced maybe 6 times total on a mtb over the past 7 years and sucked at every one besides the DH40 unless you count 2nd place against 3 single speed riders back in 2004 at Jay Peak in VT.

I deleted the post because I don’t like being called a doosh, plus I’ve always felt a bit guilty about writing about the team negatively. I was frustrated at the time, but have since looked at the situation from a different angle, or light, and troop fwd with positivity or some shit like that.

Quentin Seatpost

I dont know him but he seems to be a real talent going from 5 to 1 in one season and now doing well against the big regional Cat1s. What I dont get is the huge push to go “pro” at his age. The guy will be able to race 35plus next year. If he were under 30 I would think he would be getting calls. But at 35 (racing age next season), why would a local Cat1 team or Regional Pro team take him over a younger just as strong rider. A guy like Pete Hurst is a good example. He is just as strong and close to 10 years younger. Nonetheless, this Smith guy has had a season that 99% of the NYC racing crew only dreams of. Besides Lisbon, and maybe Hurst, he has had one of the best Cat1-2 season around.
