Here’s our quick and sloppy recap:

Will ‘Orville’ Riffelmacher – we’ve been hearing about this guy for a while, the next monster from the Williams/Wagener cabal. Rumor has it he’s even faster than Auth. Winning the B-R 4’s could be just the beginning.

Ginger misunderstands the term as she applies for a cat 2 upgrade. Perhaps Ray Alba could help her out?

Axis was good again, with Carbonara and Bickford getting 2nd and 4th at Kings County, then 1st and 4th at the SS. ‘Lonesome’ Loehner, Molloy, and Tisza all placed well at B-R.

Ken Harris continues his hot hot hot streak.

Katie ‘Silence of the’ Lambden showed her class with a solo win at B-R.

Jeff King found Brooklyn! Mihael rode his bike and mocked Schmalz!

There are no geezers like Deno’s Wonder Geezers. Rafferty takes 45+ at B-R, Maisto wins the field sprint at Kings County 35+ by a mile.

Blue Ribbon had a good weekend, with solid placings by Lubeley and Della Monica at B-R, and King 3rd at Floyd.

Badger takes 3rd at B-R 35+, just missing his customary bridesmaid spot.

Pascual ‘Truman’ Caputi and Lewis ‘Three Card’ Almonte went 1-2 at B-R. Craig Cook has really energized the CRCA junior program.

Ken Stanek just dodges a bullet.

Best prediction? We had B-R pegged, but lose all our points by forgetting that Ken was racing Floyd. JT takes the bag, mainly because he actually signed his name.

I found Brooklyn! And I made it back alive! I didn’t even have to use my flare gun and 2 way radio. No longer will I look at the east side bridges with fear and ignorance about what is on the other side. No longer will I stare blankly as people tell stories about this far off land. When I got home from my journey, I gathered my family around me and told them all about how Brooklyn is full of wonderful people and amazing things. “Brooklyn” I said, “is magical”.

Oh, and Mihael. Are you daring me to race Bear Mountain? (on the FBF 123 comments) Nice try but 1 out of town race is all I can handle and I ticked that box at FBF. I don’t want to broaden my mind too much; I need time to recover.

Andy

Oops, forgot Slokar. No pun on Slokar, are you kidding? That’s a fastball down the middle. Too easy. There’s one already on the home page.

Tony S (Kings County 4 race report - with Edgemont Bias)

Kings County Cat 4 Race Report

Great sunny conditions, windy on 2 sides of the course. Field was about medium size, no idea how many racers.

A Foundation guy attacked on the first lap but quickly got reeled in. Until lap 4 there were similar lackluster break attempts and the pack stayed together. On lap 4 Rob Kolb of Edgemont launched an attack and managed to stay away for about 2.5 laps – he was followed by a representative from Kissena and ML I think and a few other bridged up to him including Anthony Accardi of Edgemont during lap 6. That break was reeled in shortly after turn 2 in lap 6 with a lone ML rider (I don’t know his name, its the guy in image 25) dangling 20 yards off the front. The moment the break got caught I attacked and picked up the ML guy and we started trading pulls trying hard to get away. In lap 7 after the first turn a Kissena guy bridged (thank God) and we were able to get into a good rhythm and put a few more seconds on the field. I think that at the time we were holding about 20-25 seconds but I could be wrong, I tried not to look back and get distracted. Over the next 2 laps 2-3 more guys bridged up (A Toga guy first, I believe and then A Western Union guy and Craig Goodstein of Metro). Meanwhile, it looks like Edgemont, Kissena and ML we blocking pretty effectively so we were able to stay away even though the rotating paceline in the break was at times pretty disorganized. The closest we got to getting caught was with 3 laps to go when a slew of guys were able to bridge including Edgemont’s Bill Moss and Jonathan Adler’s Andy Collins. I was able to take a short break with Bill taking some long pulls ad then Andy (JA), the Western Union guy and I picked up the pace to try and shake off some of the recent bridgers who refused to work. In the last lap there ended up being 5 of us and I found myself in front on the final stretch before the final turn. That’s a shitty position to be in to contest a sprint and at this point the race turned into a cat and mouse game for the 5 of us (Andy Collins of JA, Craig Goodstein of Metro, Western Union guys, Brandon Lee of Kissena and myself) and we were going pretty slow into the last corner, eyeing each others moves. At that point since I was in front and didn’t have anyone’s wheel I decided I didn’t have a choice but to go early and hard, so the moment I cleared the final turn I sprinted like my life depended on it. Towards the end I could hear 2 bikes approaching and am very happy that I was able to hold on to the finish. Craig Goodstein of Metro was close behind me and Andy Collins of JA got 3rd. Bill Moss of Edgemont followed the break for 6th place and Matt Serra of Edgemont won the field sprint for 7th. Edgemont’s plan was followed by everyone on the team to the letter on Saturday and it came out beautifully. Thanks guys!

PROSPECT PARK

Yes! Brooklyn, if you dont live here is an out of town race. If your from Queens you may even list the race in your palmares as international.

Is the...

…photo montage of Ginger an attempt to foreshadow what nearly happened to Ken Stanek?

A lesson to all, perhaps, to always be alert to what is coming from behind?

Brooklyn

Floyd Bennett Field is a bit of a hike even for many of us Brooklynites but Prospect is easy from anywhere in Manhattan.

Nice new pavement too.

PS

I don’t know the name of the guy who almost "zabeled" the winner of the 5 race but I remembered him from last year, he told me he didn’t do squat over the winter and was totally out of shape…

Mihael

Jeff, just read your interview with Schmaltz, I still don’t think you can finish Bear Mountain…God! I’m spending way too much time on this site.

Why am I reading the cat 5 report!?

Mount Joy Road Race, Lancaster Co., PA 3/4

In wayyy over my head with the 3/4s. Centerline rule on narrow country roads makes Central Park seems like a gendarme’d boulevard by comparison, but no one felt squeezed because the peloton’s chopped to bits on the first lap. "Rolling countryside" means climbing punchy hills into a headwind, with one 350-400ft 7% pitch, and a smooth, fast not-too-difficult descent. A downhill finish. I rode four laps hanging onto gruppettos as long as I could, but lots of riding by myself. A couple of crashes from dropped chains.

Nicely-run race, however — orderly registration, many port-o-sans, a quiet parcours with few potholes, almost no traffic. Imagine, six miles with only five marshals! Full fields, big poser-atmosphere in the air. Almost half the field didn’t finish, preferring to lounge around roadside drinking bottles of Optygen. Laura Van Gilder glided along with the men’s Pro/1/2/3 to finish 14th. The only other NYC-area jersey I saw was a Team Squiggle. The rumor was the winner of the 3/4s also rides for VW/Trek in his other life.

Getting there is a haul from NYC, but I drove from my sister’s house in Allentown. Pennsyl-tucky indeed, but a lot more challenging than anything in the city. I’ll go back, but I’ll wake up at the usual 5am and make it to the 4/5 race instead.

John,

We (Edgemont) went to the Kirkwood Road race a few weeks ago and had a similar experience. Racing out there is 10 times harder than here, most of us barely even finished the race, it was brutal. However, as you said, the race was run efficiently and seamlessly by Red Rose Races (the PA promoter that puts on all the races out there).

John M.

Tony S.,

I see Edgemont loaded up for the Ephrata stage race — good to see Kirkwood didn’t discourage the team. At the risk of divulging trade secrets, what are you all doing for logistics?

I’m going to target Union Grove for next month, since I got closed out of Bear Mountain. I’m thinking these Lancaster races make for good B.M. training, definitely better climbing than Central and more adrenaline than Bergen/Rockland hill repeats.

Tony S

We’re sharing rooms at Black Bear Lodge (they have a special price for the Ephrata racers) and splitting up into teammates’ cars to get up there

kwk

if anyone wants a real nut punch of a race in pa check out the tour of christiana. the cr is hard and the crit has it all.

it is totally pennsly-tucky
