There’s a lot of mystery meat being shoved into the sausage casing that is local bike racing this weekend, so let’s dissect the grindings, shall we?
Saturday is the first big NYC race of the season, the Grant’s Tomb Criterium. In Jersey, there’s the 2013 Branchbrook Park Spring Series’ Ronde von Elwood. And in Connecticut, there’s the Plainville Spring Series in Plainville CT. That’s three races in three states on one day—such convenience!
Sunday is also busy, the Spring Series continues in Central Park, and there’s another edition of the 2013 Outdoor Sport Center Bethel Spring Series, and this one’s called the Ris Van Bethel.
Five races in two days, that’s quite impressive, and that’s how the sausage is made.
Was out there this weekend…
Part of the long runway at Floyd is closed because there is a huge pile of dirt, wood and debris being removed by dump trucks. The first turn on to the big runway also has some shipping containers and vehicles so that area is still off limits.
It seems possible to run a triangle course starting on the back stretch, with a right turn up the concrete runway, and another right turn in the runway that criss crosses in the middle then a right turn onto the big runway and then a right turn onto the back stretch. It seems that this course could work if the Park Service agrees to let the races use the big runway where no work is being done.
And now we start to watch the snow.
Hopefully the roads can dry off before the temps dip tonight.
are studded tires allowed at grant’s tomb?
Host a Grant’s Tomb virtual trainer-derby race instead?
We line up our trainers along the course?
Dan can spin some discs ans SixCycles can take pictures!
Anyone turking a Grant Tomb’s crit with snow tires?
So we’re on the Tomb watch?
can one of the columbia kids put down the bong for an hour and sweep the slush off the first 4 turns before it possibly freezes tonight?
What does it mean to Turk something?
Grant’s Tomb pro12 field photos are up.

At Central Park, it was Brian Breach of Mengoni getting the win with Stephan Dioslaki of Metra hot on his wheel getting 2nd Place.
Thank you Stephan.
Other than no results, bro, AVD put on a smart race today. Next weeks race @ FBF is looking like a parking lot crit, no thanks.
why can’t AVD do this? Doesn’t seem so hard.

Any time
What shape is FBF in? Any shot of running a regular race there next weekend?
highly unlikely. FEMA is still set up on the big runway apparently. AVD said he’s thinking of doing a course with cones….TBD.
Knock AVD all you want but his races start on time. Grant’s Tomb is run by CRCA so no criticism is welcome but WTF?! How many years in a row are the morning race schedules going to be FUBAR?
Do the mental experiment: AVD ran Grant’s 2011-2103. What would be the reaction? It would go on for days.
I appreciate AVD’s spring series and general organization. Been doing them for years, so maybe I have a different expectation about whether races should provide”deep results”. It does promote sprinting for non-places, which is dangerous.
AVD should probably invest in a camera and provide full placings – not for me but for the yo-yos who care if they are 22nd versus 24th versus 37th. For me, I look at the spring series as a training series and a way to get speedwork and intensity. The SS works for these purposes.
I am not sure how good AVD is at clarifying placing for the overall. If I were in the running for that, I’d very much want to see the overall standings.
if you knew anything about anything, you might know that Grant’s is always delayed by the same issue- cars parked on the course. no one, not even the mighty Van Dunce can move cars with the power of the force. as it is, we are at the mercy of the public’s awareness and ability to read signs the few days before the race starts.
