Hopeful Friday 9/8/06

Section head text.

Prospect Saturday, Bear Sunday. Can you identify the best team entered at Bear? We consider ourselves honorary members of that team. They told me I could be the equipment manager of the team. I just hope to be able to towel off the fellows….

Best prediction for Bear gets a Bawm Chicka Bow Wow shirt and a lascivious look from Schmalz. The look will incur a surcharge though.

Get to work, keep it clean. We’re stocking up on canned foods to ride out the boycott. Now that the boycott is in effect, I’m sending this message from the schmalz family bunker, I’m feeling gassy, so it will be a long weekend for everybody. A long, emotionally damaging weekend – so it’s business as usual, really.

Cat 4 – Filip Capala – told me he’s going to win.

Cat 3 – Rashad and Greg Olsen are hungry. 3’s are tired.
Kaminski psyched.

Master 40+ – JT – takes an early flyer

50+ – Ken Hochman – this time he gets the free pass(gave CRCA free passes to Deno’s WonderWheel for kids at Harlem)

60+ – Bob Kaplan wins race he created – Is that fair?

Women 4 – Christina from Philly?

Women 1/2/3 – Sarah Chubb-Sauvayre – beat Heather by a month. Early registration is rewarded.

Men’s Pro/1/2 – Smiley and Sherry – Navs return Saturday’s favors and keep them well fed. Harris break attempt disrupted by mid race phone call. It’s tough being president.

early solo

My team has guys that can win the masters with an early break, but I’m not one of them. I’ll be at the back of the race (or the main group, if things go well) and between gasps for breath will tell everyone that "I’m blocking."

JP Kaminski

CAT 4 Phillip Capala – I love the flying perogie but hes gonna be pushed by J. Warchol

Cat 3- J. Wickam is the guy to watch, hes been riding well all year.

P12 Good luck to all —- PS. God I’m glad they didn’t make it P123 Thanks Mike.

NY Velocity 4's

Just check out the B Cup standings. Plus Most of the top 10 guys from the spring have upgraded or are racing the 3 race. It is just based on results especially recently.
It is not that tough.

placements in cat 4

watch out for that kid Matt Pascale. I heard that he soaked his wheels in cheetah blood for this race! other than that i would say Capala and Worchal since they have both had strong years. I myself hope to finish in the top 100….

Jeff King

So after being called out by Mihael (before the spring Bear) and Blake calling the CRCA 1/2s soft, I decided to enter

big boys can do good at bear

If they’re strong enough. Think Settel in the masters last year (his first time….he won’t forget it).

You can’t be a bad climber to do well at Bear. But it’s not just for climbers.

High Priest

"soaked his wheels in cheetah blood"

That Voodoo pracitice somehow sounds oddly appealing for anyone’s big day. Can you obtain it locally? What’s the cheetah count at the Bronx Zoo? I haven’t been reading the Daily News headlines closely this week…

Overheard on Harlem Hill today...

Cat 4 Guy: Sex Panther by Odion. It’s made with bits of real panther, so you know it’s good. This stuff is illegal in 9 countries, but I’m going to rock it at Bear.
Cat 4 Guy #2: Yes, it’s quite pungent. It stings the nostrils… in a good way. I’m gonna be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.
Cat 4 Guy: They’ve done studies, you know. They say 60% of the time, it works every time.
Cat 4 Guy #2: That doesn’t make any sense.

If you are going to rock the cheetah blood my friend you have already conceded defeat- bring on the sex panther…

Lets get a couple of things straight, Settel is not "big" and there ain’t one NYVC that can beat Smolaga if he doesn’t have a mechanical.

I know based on the tournout that nobody really cared about the Prospect Race this morning, but I wanted to race this weekend and Bear was fillled…It’s safe to say that I’m done with park races. Today I was taken out by the biggest fucking idiot move I could’ve even imagined in a race. I am about halfway back in the field as we come around the curve on top of the hill during the 5th lap (of 9) on the northside. The pack is going pretty slowly down the west side hill about 28mph or so. Apparently some yahoo in the back must have known I was planning on launching a hard attack in after about two more laps and didn’t want to chase. So instead, he decided that it would be better to barrell into me from behind at about 35 mph.

I went down hard and Gavin from Major Taylor Ironriders was right behind me and tried unsuccessfully to bunny hop me and he went down hard too. Now the right half of my body is covered in the gnarliest road rash I’ve ever seen and hopefully I only have cosmetic damage to my carbon frame (hoping Imbert gives me the ok to ride it when he gets to looking it over). Anyway, is it really that fucking difficult to ride in straight line, stay out of the rec lane and NOT FUCKING SPRINT INTO PEOPLE THAT ARE IN FRONT OF YOU?! Apparently it is for enough nyc cat 4s to ruin it for everyone else.

Fortunately though I wasn’t badly hurt and will still drive the pace car for the Women’s 1/2/3 race tomorrow at Bear. (See, this rant somehow ties into the bear theme of the thread.)

New Best Excuse

I crashed while thinking about attacking later . . . because I swerved into a guy who was behind me the last time I checked.

Ethan

Ha, well, fair enough to mock as an excuse though I was kidding about the him hitting me because I was going to attack later (but only because he couldn’t read my mind). But believe me, I don’t need to make excuses about getting hit. The crash was in no way my fault. In fact, the whole thing was so bizzare that I don’t know whether to laugh or cry when I think about it.

who really cares about cat 4 results? thats like being really interested in whos gonna win the caulder cup this year….

Agreed, also...

who really cares about cat 3 results? thats like being really interested in whos gonna win the some other stupid prize…

Editors – – how about a new poll? Haters. Love ’em? Hate ’em? Are one? It would be interesting to see how many haters there are. Be honest with responses people. Only one response per a-hole. Even you, King.

"Cat 3 – Rashad and Greg Olsen are hungry. 3’s are tired."

There getting 2nd and 3rd has to be worth something.
Plus I got Kaplan in 60+

Hope everyone enjoyed the race.

Juniors at Bear

17 year old Laura Shirock won Womens 1/2/3 beating last years winner , Mara Miller, in a sprint. Laura is a top ranked track rider in the USCF National program and is another rider benefiting from growing up in Trexlertown area.

18 year old Peter Salon of Mengoni placed 2nd in the Pro/1/2 and Pascual Caputi of CRCA Junior Development placed 2nd in Cat 4.

Craig Cook’s work with CRCA Junior Development has to be highlight for CRCA this year. Craig has worked on this quietly but he desreves a tremendous amount of credit and I hope he’s able to continue working on this next year.

Victor

I couldn’t wait to see how you place. <cough> let’s hope you didn’t finish it some 20 minutes behind the main group. Time? What does it really matter??? Sure, I didn’t win. I am getting stronger and racing smarter. My time will tell…..

you are both right

time doesnt matter in a rr, but it matters to victor since he probably knows his finish time and wants to know how much he was behind.

Matt

The mengoni guys went. Devin Flaherty rode w/ a pro team from Cali. Sakonnet was there too. I dont think anybody did that well though….BRUTAAAAL race. Can’t wait to watch it on OLN.

orcott got two warnings about riding the wrong way on the course after the finish. When he got on his bike for the third time, the officials had no choice but to DQ him.

Orcutt

Sorry, there were no warnings whatsoever – if anyone had said anything I would’ve walked up on the grass. Eric Ragot asked me to make sure not to cross the finish line on the road and I complied – I was going up to the feed zone to retrieve some stuff and didn’t obstruct the road in any way. Nice anonymous officiating.

Alan Atwood

Jon, I’m sorry to hear about the DQ. Problem is here that Mike and I were reamed by the PIPC a couple of years ago for bicycles going up that hill (wrong way on the road) as well as riding on the grass anywhere. So therefore we have to take the approach that any riders going from the parking lot up the hill towards the finish would have to be cited. Thus I gave instructions at the start of the pros (and Meesha Crowther for the rest of the fields) that no riders were to go to the finish area unless filing a protest.

Mike has worked really hard with the PIPC to amend a relationship that was near dead after the disaster 3 years ago (fields were started without the ambulance being there), but we still have lots of rules that we have to adhere to (outside of USCF rules) in order to put on races at Bear. It’s not an ideal situation but one we have to live with in order to race there. In my eyes, the course is worth it.
