Teams like Empire,Mengoni and Sakonnet getting into a race like Univest and then picking up non-team riders for the race is a joke.

UCI race, 5 are required to start. Sometimes things happen; guys drop out, get sick, return to their home country, etc. Then the team has to go to its alternates.

Blank Jersey

Amateur teams do this all the time. It used to be “composite teams”, it would even happen at US Pro championships back in the day. Ride harder and maybe you’ll get picked for one of these teams!!

9:32

Nothing against the teams. I just thought that Univest is beyond its amateur days. Their team selection process should be very selective. Some top amateur teams like Crocs/Garneau got left out. Seems to be connections with Eustice being key. Downgrades status of Univest and pretty much destroys Bear Mtn. 1/2.
You can’t be both a top professional race and a race for pick up amateur teams.

Anonymous

I can see where you’re coming from but don’t you agree that this is such a great opportunity to those who were picked for the race. It must be very exciting for them.

Anonymous

Eric Schildge was the one guy at GMSR whose cassette went to 28. Seriously though, that kid is talented and could definitely be a factor at Univest. He is probably the most underrated New York area (ok Jersey) rider right now.

Anonymous

Agreed,it should be a great experience for the guys to get in the race. I don’t begrudge them the opportunity and I’d be thrilled.
But Eustice needs to work out where his race fits with USAcycling. He does put on a very professionally run race but he is not getting the top US pros. Even the teams in the race are holding out their top GC riders for Missouri.
Is the current set up the best way to serve the top amateurs in the region?

jft

“But Eustice needs to work out where his race fits with USAcycling.”

What if he can’t fit some neat box you or USACyclnig have? What if he just puts on a good event, spectators, sponsos and participants like it, but some small teams are weak (but still go) and some big teams don’t send their top guys?

Should he just not do it if he can’t “But Eustice needs to work out where his race fits with USAcycling”?

as

not necessarily better with them all. Think of prestigious races that gather pros with cat1s: Somerville, Fitchburg, US Open… these all welcomed cat1s to race the pros. I mean, you’re denigrating the race based on WHICH pros go now? Come on.

Razzy The Chicken

Univest GP is a UCI 1.2 Road Race. You may want to do your homework here and look up the rules. As they are stated in the UCI Cycling Regulations Rule Book, a 1.2 or 2.2 event is open to the following:

– UCI professional continental teams of the country
– UCI continental teams
– national teams
– regional and club teams
– mixed teams

As for what John Eustice should or shouldn’t be doing that’s a whole different issue. I’m not trying to defend the guy but he is putting on one of only a handful of UCI ranked events in North America.

9:32

ok. if eustice wants to continue including amateurs, why doesn’t he move the race back a week and make Bear Mtn. the qualifier for the amateur teams.
That would create an additional top level amateur race and a series of really good end of season races with Green Mtn. , Bear and Univest for the survivors.

Anonymous

Still don’t understand your objection, since what’s wrong with amateur teams being involved? And composite teams have been part of the sport for a looooong time

jft

“ok. if eustice wants to continue including amateurs, why doesn’t he move the race back a week and make Bear Mtn. the qualifier for the amateur teams. ”

You’re assuming he wants something different than what he has. The current rules allow him to include some amateurs.

Your challenge is a straw man that because he has some amateur he wants more or all amateurs. Straw men don’t merit a response.

The trio of amateur races (GMSR, Bear, Univest) in succession (or really four if we include Mengoni/Thater, then GMSR, then Bear, then Univest) was a nice thing for participants.

But I assume Eustice can make more money and put on a better spectacle for the town/sponsors on his current date. If you want to argue he’s doing a disservice for regional/national amateurs, go ahead. Maybe you’re right. But it’s his race and it is what it is. Including televised, with good riders, local races for kids, live radio, etc etc.

Anonymous

932, do you really argue like that. Someone says they’d like a little milk in their coffee and you tell them they’d better figure out what they want. If they want milk, they should drink a carton of milk.

Anonymous

I don’t think so. I’ve seen some YouTube videos, and I think if you drink a carton of milk, you may get sick. I guess it depends on the size of the carton, really. Mebbe a pint is ok. Possibly a quart. But not a half-gallon. No no! That would be crazy talk. I think if they want milk, they should just have a glass of milk. That would be safer. Preferably chocolate. Or even strawberry! Strawberry! That would satisfy their thirst for milk and be a tasty surprise treat. I’d go with Nesquik, with that lovable bunny character. I remember sticking a spoon into those old tin containers, which you had to pry open with a screwdriver because your little 8-year old fingers didn’t have strong enough nails, and you actually had to get a chair from the kitchen table because your mom hid it above the stove (again!) and you had to get a really long spoon to really scrape out the remains. Sometimes I’d bend the spoon trying to dig it out, and get panicked I couldn’t bend it back properly, and my mom would catch me and take the wooden spoon to me (again!) Then you’d have a mouth full of powder (so choco-lic!) and could barely breathe. Good times. Wait, what are we talking about again?

Anonymous

Oh, and those rich kids, you know the ones, they drank those pre-mixed chocolate drinks, like Yoo-Hoo? F*cking posers. Liqui-geeks. They were so obviously pretending to be adults, drinking out of a bottle and all that. Were they ever adults, at any level? No! I mean, if you never had to mix your own chocolate milk, you’re not a REAL chocolate milk drinker. They really ruined the whole early 80s flavored milk scene. Yoo-Hoo’s not even milk, and only milk is real. Sometimes, they would even leave a little bit at the bottom of the bottle when they threw it out. Lame. Actually in my family, we only had powdered milk AND powdered Nesquik. You had to mix in tap water. Hardcore!

Bad news gang. Tony Slokar just contacted me and the race on Sunday is cancelled.

Do me a favor folks, please allow Tony to send out a message about refunds before he gets 300+ e-mails in his inbox about that very subject. He will send a note out; I will follow up with him to make sure that gets done. It’ll probably be on here and crca.net, so wait for that note before calling and/or writing him about refunds.

Thanks,
Alan

kwk

every race promoter has the option to enter local teams to help regional cycling and promote cycling sponsorship. they do it in races you may of heard of like the tour de france.

Ken Harris

The Harriman State Park Police have refused to permit this Sunday’s race because of insufficient officers to cover the event. We have exhausted the alternatives, and are forced to cancel the race. We will not reschedule. We will be issuing refunds.
With apologies.

Reno 911

Can’t a bunch of us dress up like cops and pretend? Or does nobody in the CRCA have the requisite mustache and gut to look the part?

Alan Atwood

To anon poster: no hoax here; I was chief ref for this race. Mine and Ken’s posts are correct; this race is off. Yes it does suck, but life will go on, and so will the race in May of ’08.

Alan

Anonymous

Kind of odd it got listed at the last minute and now it’s pulled because there’s not enough police coverage. Maybe the park police didn’t take it serious either because it wasn’t on bike reg?

hahaha

it got up to 35 by 2pm, which is normal.

Hope the problem was not CRCA getting to the park police too late. Actually maybe I should hope that was the problem, since that can easily be avoided in the future, though it’s embarrassing

Anonymous

haha. Yeah, the Bear park police are HUGE cycling fans and surf Bikereg.com all week looking for races to attend, and to confirm that CRCA is really holding the race that has been on same day for years now. Dork.

Anonymous

Neutral start from the Boathouse, 8a. 0k at Riverside Drive.

Sprint points on offer at Fairway viaduct, River Road’s Ross Dock circle, and the traffic light at the bottom of State Line.

KOM points at Ft. Washington Avenue, Alpine police station (Do Not Pass sign)and Clausland Mt.

Three circuits of Rockland Lake. Finish line in front of the Runcible Spoon.

Green and polka-dot jersey winner split a panini, Finish line winner gets the Golden Muffin.

sad in manhattan

what would have happened at Bear? Who would have made a stupid move? Would the Asphalt Green team have pulled the entire 4 field and then gone for a run afterward?

Anonymous

With the way the weather’s been, a Nov – Jan season in Central Park wouldn’t be bad. Decent weather and least use by other park users.

KH

They have been very supportive in the past.

CRCA canceled the race. The State Police would not issue a permit because there were no more available officers. We were short one. Given that the date had been set months ago and this had not been a problem before, it’s rather strange, and we will have to find a way to make certain that it doesn’t happen again while maintaining our good relations with the park.

Angry Guy

Organizing a race on real roads in this country is very difficult. Props to the CRCA for setting this race up. C’est la vie.

AE

ONE cop short? I’m absolutely certain that the club did all in its power; the police really shit the bed with this one. I wasn’t even doing the race this time and I’m cheesed. That’s utterly ridiculous. ONE. COP. What a joke. Again, all respect to AA and KH.

Anonymous

There’s this guy in Minneapolis who’s pretty good. His name is Dave Karsnia and you might wanna give him a call. He’ll give you a hand for sure.

KH

Normally this is not an issue, because we’re the only thing happening in the Park. Again, they have been cooperative in the past, as long as we didn’t litter or cross the yellow line.

Anonymous

but it seems like open races in the CRCA is not being handled all that well at the moment. The last ITT was one example and now Bear cancelled. Guys, it’s thankless hard work but you signed up for it. You should maybe take a leaf out Dieter’s book on how to do these races. He grew Battenkill, which is a much further drive to a sell-out event with multiple sposors and seamless logistics. Don’t sign up for something you don’t have the time to pull off successfully

hahaha

but locally Mike Green did a great job the last few years on fall harriman, spring harriman, maltese, etc.

and he got Harlem on the road back from the dead

Alan Atwood

You are…………..

5 races, 4 months, 1 VOLUNTEER. Should you choose to accept this challenge, contact the CRCA board and VOLUNTEER for the open race director position.

Screw the Peace Corps, this is the toughest job you’ll ever love!!

vo2maxout.com

With the closer of Bear and everyone prepared to do a tuff Bear race, I predict the Bklyn field will have some pretty heavy testosterone kicking in the am!

KH

Is currently the toughest job on the Board, without question. Even when the race runs perfectly, some one is unhappy about something, and races rarely run perfectly.

Anonymous

When will registration for Spring Bear open? Nobody cares how close to or far away from the race registration opens, but we all want to know when it will be open.

CRCA Marshal Director

I am looking for more ‘wankers’ to help me with the 20+ hours of work it takes to organize the marshals and the drivers for Bear Mtn. Feel free to contact me if you would like to volunteer your time for the spring race – I am sure I’ll hear from you.

OUCHY HAIR

I’ve been scraping away at my leg hair for the past eight months and finally got it as smooth as a baby’s behind and now BEAR is CANCELLED — OUCH

OUCHY HAIR

I’ve been scraping away at my leg hair for the past eight months and finally got it as smooth as a baby’s behind and now BEAR is CANCELLED — OUCH

Captain Ed

Sorry to hear you guys had Bear cancel on ya, it’s truly a premier race with “epic” potential. If ya feel like drivin’ south to beautiful Hammonton NJ, blueberry capitol of the world, you’ll get some decent mileage (47 and 63 miles)with excellent road surfaces. It’s run on a 16 mile loop, virtually flat with a few very (VERY!) slight rollers, and motorcycle police escort along with lead and follow cars. Hope to see some of you on Sunday.

Just read on cyclingnews:
“11:19 EDT
Our in-race reporter has updated the situation. There are two chase groups between the eight-man break and the peloton. In the first chase group is Zoltan Mecseri (Nivo Betonexpressz 2000), Eugene Barrow (Mengoni USA) and Brad Huff (Slipstream). ”

Seems he made it to the finishing circuits, which is a feat in itself. Go Eugene!!

Anonymous

Great result for him. He has been racing alot this year. He really suffers in the hills but has a nice sprint. Great job!

Anonymous

Great win. A small compensation for the GMSR’s moto marshall incompetence. We’ll see a lot more of him next year.

Anonymous

Has Joe Papp on the Tour of Nicaragua (Sp?)? Isnt he serving a 2 year suspension. Why would they want him on the team anyway. Strange…

Anonymous

You’re looking at old stuff.
Joe rode very briefly for Champion Sys. in 05. in China.
Ray and Champ Sys people would have nothing to do with the guy.

Anonymous

according to the cyclingnews coverage, the breakaway riders were so far ahead, that they may have overlapped on the finishing circuit. To avoid confusion, the field was pulled.

Anonymous

probably cyclingnews error. Borrajo for one is interviewed at the starting line in live coverage and listed as a dns.

No bear. Life goes on. But no reason you should end the season doing anything but going full tilt.

Once again, Mengoni and Sakonnet come thru when the going gets tough. But where was that other NYC team? Bravo Eugene! Phil Gaimon: wow! What do they feed them down in Georgia?!

Anonymous

11:37 EDT
The peloton is over six minutes down now; a dangerous gap. The CRCA Empire team and Team Tecos are taking turns at the front of the main group taking control of the chase.

Empire had a great first year. Many podium and top finishes in serious races. They provided the organization to get top local riders in major races. CRCA composite teams were hit and mainly miss. The key is following up with an improved second season and joining Mengoni as a perennial force. Hopefully they’ll stick with local riders. plus they had a guy who won some National Track honors.

Teams like Mengoni and HotTubes were once within CRCA, it would be a shame if the haters force Empire out.

hahaha

Eugene is tough and aggressive. Props to Empire for trying to get back in the race. And that Sakonnet kid did a ride!

Nice going Jared, and Dave Sommerville for organizing that trip to Nicaragua

not an Empire fan

“Teams like Mengoni and HotTubes were once within CRCA, it would be a shame if the haters force Empire out. ”

What can I say to force Empire out?

KH

that’s Jonathan Erdelyi, for US U23 champ, wearing his Metra/Brielle Cyclery bibs with a Mengoni top.

I was told that you can’t wear white kit after labor day.

loozer

would it not be really cool if hot tubes and Mangonie were back in the crca. then the level of racing would be up to what we see in local USCF races.

loozie loozer

or… the CRCA could hold more open races, make them all open…

as in, the way to bring CRCA races to USCF level is to make them USCF races.

Except, Bear cancelled. Is the CRCA is just coasting and not pedaling?

Angry Guy

You’re kinda dumb, loozer. There is plenty of open racing in the city. I like the CRCA the way it is, and hope it doesn’t change.

Eugene

Based on what Pollo taught me, I think I can translate part of the newspaper writeup:

Jared Bunde, of the team Champion System, at 50km remaining escaped and joined Gabriel Larrea, of AEG-Toshiba and Adan Schwind, of Firts Rate Mortage, all from the United States, but it was Bunde who showed more resistance and determination and then “mounted” to his breakaway companions more than four minutes and a little more to the peloton.

Anonymous

JT raised some valid points about Eustice not having an obligation to amateurs or anyone else and should just put on the best race he can for the spectators, sponsors and himself.
But Albin’s jump from good performances by Gaimon and Eugene to best serving regional amateur region is beyond ridiculous. Also thanks for the detailed analysis. I don’t know why I’d expect anything more on this site.

Eye witness

Empire for riding like the big boys and at least trying to bring the break back when other teams just sat and watched.

Mengoni for Eugene’s BIG ride (he’s 40!)plain awesome and for their 7th place in the Doylestown crit with Borrajo’s brother.

Sakonnet for having a 21 year old kid in the break who out lasted some big names and for taking 7th + the U23 Jersey. In today’s crit another Sakonnet rider was 10th and took the U23 jersey plus the First American jersey.

Congrats to all NYC riders as you all have something to be proud of.

Albin

Gaimon and Eugene’s results are just that: the results of amateur’s inclusion in the race. There were several amateur teams at Univest, all of which brought their “A” squads. And all of these amateurs had a chance to race against some of the better riders from this country and from abroad. This makes it an excellent way to “serve the top amateurs in the region”. You may not agree, but it’s certainly not ridiculous.

Litty

“14:56 EDT
We’re just waiting to see if Gaimon was able to hold his position on the road and finish fourth.

15:07 EDT
Well, that wraps our live coverage of the 2007 Univest Grand Prix….”

Props to Zmolik for two weeks of consistent, solid riding. Bring Igor M. to Empire for some serious horsepower next year.
