Hopeful Friday 9/29/06

Section head text.

Barely sensate this morning, so let’s just say that there’s a race tomorrow and you guys can discuss. Look for more Vegas photos throughout the day.

Will NYVC walk away w/ B-Cup or will others make desperate last minute "recruitments"(ie. downgrade) in an attempt win? Oh no, who would do such a girlie thang?!?

Live Wrong

from cyclingnews.com:

Lawrence Whittaker, president of Cycling South Africa (CSA), has reacted on Thursday on the affair, sending out a press release in which he assured that "CSA has zero tolerance towards drug use. We will do everything within our power to root out this growing evil which threatens the future of our sport, at every level. With particular reference to the Carte Blanche programme, we will have to follow up individuals concerned."

Whittaker also announced that a fund to fight doping in the sport was being created, and said that he was "currently exploring the viability of voluntary polygraph (lie detection) testing for cyclists, the idea being that cyclists who voluntarily and successfully undergo a lie detector test establishing that they are drug free will be given a wrist band to wear. […] Lie detector tests are, I understand, 98 percent accurate.

"

Include Bear in the B Cup! (Not)

Notice how there is no more talk of this as the promoters of this silly idea were nowhere to be found on the 4 podium.

Nice. Drug free bands. Now the pros will have to become lie detector evaders like trained spies. What a fun offseason occupation. Zen-like meditation to beat the test and focus cycling energy!

Or you can think about it this way?

Will NYVC walk away w/ B-Cup or will others make desperate last minute "recruitments"(ie. downgrade) in an attempt win? Oh no, who would do such a girlie thang?!?

What is the difference between a team that brings a rider down from A to B versus a team that keeps all of its A caliber riders B’s just to win the team challenge.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

B Field (B/C field races count as well) Jim Boyd standings

Now ask: Who’s upgraded to A’s and who is still a B?

3 Justin Brown, NY Velocity 3 9 9 21

4 Kim Riseth, Jonathan Adler 9 9 18

5 Rashad Guerra, Sanchez-Metro 6 9 15

The point is why upgrade if you are going to come down again? It just does not look good. Poor strategical planning, to say the least – you should have considered saving your ace in your hands.

There is a big diff between staying a B for 1 extra week (Mecray) once A-eligible to help his team and plotting to downgrade an A rider to help an already solid team with a lead rider that just came damn close to winning Bear Mtn. Aint no sandbaggers here folks. Not like either OMalley or Mecray or Gipp have the pts to upgrade to 3’s as of now, so zipp it and just race!

Anonymous

If someone came down from the A to B field just to try to win a race, wouldn’t that be sandbagging?

I thought that under CRCA rule the A field is reserved for Cat 1-2-3, so if a strong Cat 4 rider chooses to stay in the B field, that’s not really sandbagging. Gipp is def not a sandbagger, he is still a Cat 4. And the rule also states

"…A riders are not allowed to join the B field on those days when there is a B Challenge race."

Anonymous

May be, but there is no official rule about that so if Andy/Mecray want to stay in the B-field they can.

If a team still has a shot at the B-Cup, and given that two riders just recently upgraded to 3(thus automatic upgrade to A), it was prob a "wise" team decision for someone like Mecray to stay in the B field and try to help win the Cup. Perhaps other teams were too busy pursuing individual glory(quickly upgrading to A despite Cat 4 status) and forgot about the B-Cup competition?

Like someone said below, this is, my friend, different than trying to get some help from the big brother squad -in terms of technicality(rules) , sportsmanship and team strategy.

Niko

Hilarious, a brand new team of 4’s and 5’s upgrades 2 of its best riders to cat 3 (and A field) right before the final B cup race and then we get called out for being sandbaggers? Why not Just enjoy the nice weather and the lifting of mid season dietary restrictions?

Anonymous

commenters on here are schizo! half the time they argue that CRCA races aren’t worth shit. the other half, if you win two races late in the season with smaller fields you have to race A’s, cause you you’re suddenly that good.

Tony S

Blah, blah, blah. Lets talk about the actual interesting possibilities with the B team challenge tomorrow. JA can actually still win the challenge, but will need to not only win or get 2 mid to top placings but also keep NYVC from getting a top 8. That is a daunting task – look for JA to try and force a break. Edgemont is out of the running for 1st place but we’re looking to try and take 2nd place. Metro is very close behind Edgemont and both teams would need either a win or a couple of high placings AND keep JA out of the other placings in order to take 2nd. The possibilities are endless, this should be fun.

I think it’s called different opinions.

I think those that are critical of CRCA are either:

A) They are not good enough to win here so they are jealous.

B) Their team(s) are not part of CRCA so they cannot race and they are jealous.

C) They live so far from NYC that they have no idea what CRCA races are about and thus jealous.

Yes Tony!!

Let’s hope all teams come out ready to race – It should be a good race. Good luck tomorrow everyone!

Jonathan Adler Racing is looking forward to a quality competition in the daunting task of overtaking NYVelocity for the vaunted B Grail. See you batches in the Park.

Yikes!!! Just having a bit of fun, Tony. Certainly didn’t mean to offend. See you at the Opera. You bring the wottles of bine, you drunken Uzbek.

You may. Dont get mixed up with those fellas who ride bikes on last Friday of every month…critical mass, that’s it.

Road is over, cross rules the roost now

I predict I’m going to be having a good time in Southampton this weekend.

What about you?

BLT

You forgot to mention a growing force in the B races, Christoffel Prinsloo, who despite your "predictions" (wishful thinking) that didn’t even mention his name, took 2nd (very nearly a first) for Team OrganicAthlete. See ya next year.
