Hopeful Friday 9/21/2007

Section head text.

The racing spigot has been nearly turned off, with just a trickle of racing getting through this weekend. That last sentence really makes me have to go to the bathroom.

Saturday is the Catch Kissena (which sounds like something that would interest the Center for Disease Control) Road Race. It’s another handicap race, with the Kissena club members going off 4 minutes ahead. The race also serves as the Kissena club championships.

Sunday is a CRCA club race, no handicap unless you consider that schmalz may be participating.

Local guy Jonathan Erdelyi racing for Slipstream down in Bermuda. Nice to see him getting back into racing this year.

They should make that race more interesting. No course. Just let Kissena take off and see if you can find them — racing down Flatbush Avenue, the BQE, hiding in the cereal aisle at Met Food, at the movies watching Superbad

There is probably less than 50 cross races of experience between everyone there. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but C Class is Category 3/4s which most of those guys are on the road save Gabe Lloyd. Unfortunate for the 5s like CJ but doesn’t mean those guys aren’t legit cat 3 or 4 cross riders.

if folks who do the CRCA “A” races all season go sign up for a “C” race outside of the city are not sandbagging, then what are they doing? lame lame lame. and no, it has nothing to do with cross racing experience, so don’t use that excuse please

Anonymous

There are some good 3’s and a couple of 2’s registered in the C race. Most of those have only done 2-3 cross races in their lives so doing the C race is completely acceptable. Road success doesn’t automatically translate into cross.

P Diddy

Experience has everything to do with it. I am a CRCA A and a cat 2. I finished 10th out of 11 finishers at a beginner mountain bike race last year. Its not lame, lame, lame. Its actually what they should be doing – racing in their category. The promoters most likely knew that the turnout would increase by offering a frame prime and if it is their intent to draw new racers, they are certainly accomplishing their goal. Stop being afraid of outsprinting Ugli and go race your bike.

sandbagging

the right thing to do as a cat. 2 “A” racer is to swallow your pride and take your beating in the “A” field at the cross race. but that would be awesome if Ugly wins the sprint for the free bike.

CRCA Guy

“In roughly comparable conditions, the men’s winner was 45 seconds faster than last year’s.”

Does anyone agree with this? Wasn’t the TT in 2006 much windier than the August 2007 TT?

The “cross” over from pure roadie to CX doesn’t always translate. The inverse is also true, some good CX guys aren’t so hot as road racers. Same applies to MTB racing. Depending on the difficulty of the course, there are cat 2/3s getting their asses handed to them in sport class.

i was a fairly good cat 4 last year. when i raced 2 c/x race last year, my first ever, i finished behind 12 year olds and women. i’ll be no better this year as a cat 3.

Anonymous

Maybe don’t catch them….leave them to their own devices. They’ll attack each other….chase their own guys – crash into each other. Keep 200ft behind at all times.

Cross takes some special skill and a lot of practice. A Cat 2 on road doesn’t translate into squat in a cross race unless the guy knows what he is doing.

Your mom

argument. Categories for cross have no business being mixed up with road categories. The best example is the Expert MTB rider who can’t stay upright in a Cat 5 crit. Cross is cross, road is road, etc. Just like Cat 2 on the track doesn’t mean a thing outside of the rider’s home track…

that road is road and cross is cross, so they are different disciplines and should be categorized accordingly. But I don’t agree with this: “Just like Cat 2 on the track doesn’t mean a thing outside of the rider’s home track…” Does that mean that just because I received my cat 1 at t-town, I should race as a beginner elsewhere? Fun! I hope there is some prize money, or a frame prime.

Andy

I’ve done maybe 3 or 4 cross races, so I could be totally wrong. But it seems to me it’s still 70-80% motor and 20-30% skills. I’d rather have a cat 2 motor with limited cross skills.

Anonymous

No one is saying that they wouldn’t want the motor. Check the results the past couple of fall x sesons. The results are littered with Road 2’s and 3’s that are nowhere in B, C x-races

Anonymous

If it is a technical course, then pure road cycling skills are not gonna help you. Honestly, I believe good mountain biking skills are important for a decent cyclocross racer.

Hey Kimani!
How about you quit sandbagging in the B’s and move up to the A’s with the rest of your teammates 😉

Congrats on a great and long overdue win!!
