Hopeful Friday 9/1/06

Section head text.

Green Mountain weekend. I’d write more, but I’m busy trying get the mental picture of Lee at the track in a mankini out of my head. With a power drill. And I had just wiped out the Jeff King mankini image. Speak for yourself on the mental mankini images!

Remember, you’re still on notice, so keep it clean and positive. Don’t make us bring back the login.

question: you doing Green Mountain?

answer: I stay away from anything with the word "mountain" in it.

Wow – Aaron kicked BUTT and won the prologue climb on Fri. What a sweet result for him. Congrats Aaron.
Also serious kudos to Chris Shaw – 5th on same race and just behind Aaron. Not bad for a dude over 6 ft! Strong legs…
Plenty of other strong finishes from CRCA as well, as we would expect from NYC racers in the hardest stage race in the region…Yeah!

shaw

should have placed me 2nd, but i got a penalty for the yellow line rule which bumped me to 6th on GC. doesn’t matter, i just crashed out in the rain. snapped my bars in two. i’m showered and dry while aaron is probably just hitting the final climb. represent for CRCA mr. wolfe!

Pro 1/2 field ran into a cop car that was perpendicular to the road right after a bend on a fast downhill. 20 went down. field refused to finish the race. don’t blame them.

Wow!! That is true Euro-style. Dont blame the pro’s one bit. There should’ve been GMSR marshals telling the fuzz that they picked a bad spot to be "johnny law" – Goodluck trying to get pro’s to line up in 07′. Bad experiences spread like wildfire!

Thanks for the info...

Results just went up and I called some of my friends who are racing…Just how bad was the weather? Was it teeming all day?

if I remenber right, this is second straight year for dqing P/1/2 at Green Mtn. Last year was for too many riders going over center line. They came back this year.

Some course conditons require acceptions to the rules though. Like fast descents into corners for instance. It makes sense to protect the riders safety as opposed to sticking doggedly to a rule that may work against a safe race. Putting a police cruiser on the course in that situation was a bad call. I sorta blame the promoters for not alerting police officials of the potential danger of the vehicle location. Promoters are X-racers, they now better. Cops are cement heads when it comes to bike races. They dont know.
You’re probably right about 07′. Guys will still line up but goodluck getting really good pro teams. Protesting a stage is a big deal and a bit of a black eye to Velocity. That kind of shit will get around most pro’s will not tolerate a race that threatens they’re livelyhood.

lee3

Just read Atwood’s post. Clearly a different situation than I thought – but as he wrote, still ‘ a bone head move’.

Do not understand Lee3’s comment about black eye for Velocity.
Velocity provides finish line camera services for Green Mtn as it did for CRCA Harlem, Maltese and Mengoni races. To their credit , they have gotten Green Mtn results up within a few hours of race finish.

"You were close…..a state trooper who left his post on a corner saw the field and attempted to turn around to get back to his post. Problem was in doing his U-turn his nose got into the pro field going downhill at 50mph. Totally stupid. Riders did stop and did not continue. Can’t blame them really, but it was something totally out of control of anyone. Just a bonehead move from someone that should have known better.

As Atwood wrote, it really was no fault to the promoter. Just bad decision making on the head of the policeman. I’m sure the Pro peleton’s Stg. protest doesnt give the promoters the warm a fuzzy feelings and I’ll lay money on the fact that they will handle that section of the course differently next yr. They do a fine job @ the finish line and they get them up quick – great, thats a tough job!

Not everyone was on board with the protest. There was an accident and that was very unfortunate. But why refuse to ride? All the other fields rode the same course and found it safe enough.

What, the "pro’s" who make their livlihood on the road found it too risky? Or were they just trying to make a statement and ended up harming the overall race in the process? Plenty of 1 and 2 riders pay their own way and travel long distances to take part. How about them?

Green Mtn is not a pro race. No pro teams enter riders. Riders on pro teams enter the race on their own for training and to win some money for themselves. All US pro men were eligible to ride the USPRO Championship in Greenville. Non-US citizens on pro teams were looking for a place to race.

lee3

Yea I bet it must’ve been a tough decision for the small squad gunslinger pro’s.
What non-US pro’s showed up for GMSR?
