Duck heads

This weekend, the NYC bike racing world will shift its focus from bouncing Antipodeans in France to the most important bike races of all—the races we are in.
Saturday has the Al Toefield Memorial Road Race in Prospect Park. Also on Saturday is the Battenkill Time Trial / NY State Time Trial Championships in
Cambridge, NY. And for the dirt crowd, there’s the 12 Hours At 909 MTB Race in Pleasant Valley, NY.
Sunday starts with the Race For The Wine at Floyd Bennett Field, then there’s the Kissena Omnium and National Qualifier at the Kissena Velodrome and finally, up north, there’s the Donovan-Ruhlman Naugatuck Criterium in Naugatuck, CT.

Paul mentions that donkeys in this region have a cross on their back because they carried Jesus to the cross (which is incredibly wrong, the story is that the cross is because the donkey carried Mary to Bethlehem—but who’s counting?), but the real reason for the crosses is because Jens once dropped a bottle into a nearby field and the donkey’s partook of the grass nurtured by the water.

rah rah

perhaps paul could tell us once or twice what who would be on the podium and in the jerseys “if we stopped the race right now” – i would find such an analysis fascinating. would it be possible?

schmalz

35.5k to go, if the race stopped right now, it would suck because we still have a lot of stages to go.

Phil Ligget is an icon.

When cycling was not the replacement too Golf he was our man. He still is in my mind he has to stay on top of 200+ foreign names and about a million shots of random castles…and donkeys…when the last time your baseball game showed random crap from near by neighborhoods and then expected the announcers to speak authoritatively about it..

Helmut Gescheint

The French air force uses this remote region for aerial bombing drills. Hence, the real reason for the crosses on the donkeys. Paul might have also mentioned similar sighting marks on other farm animals.

Max Ergopower

at least one of those crashes was caused by women in the field who got sketched out and sat up (!) on the downhill. There were a lot of them today and while a few are good riders most of them are in over their heads. call me a sexist but I do not think they belong in a race with the masters. most of them get dropped anyway.

Matteo Brakepad

yeah…I had us clocked @ a 28.3 avg just as we were getting neutralized. Then after about 2 miles of putting along @ 18, we were still able to amp it back up so we finished @ 28.1 avg. By the way….does anyone have the results??? Top 10 ??

David Supple

Seemed to do a fine job to me — thanks all for getting up early and keeping us safe out there!

Louis Seatmast

there was only one crash involving any women. a fairly inexperienced rider didn’t see a cone (in the road) and ended up in the barrier, and she bounced off and took down another woman rider.
but, sexist guy, the first bad crash happened when two guys touched wheels at speed. no idea about the others.
some of the women are stronger and better handlers than others, but same goes for the men.

mr. sexist

i stand by my earlier comment. It’s just a dumb format, with the exception of a few who are really solid riders, the women are either hanging off the back or getting gapped and interfering with the mens race. Today they all lined up at the front, then rolled up the hill at 12mph allowing a break of 3 guys to sneak away…with a little more horsepower it might have stuck. Don’t tell me that isn’t interference.

plenty of guys do stupid, aggressive stuff, and crash, but at least they are in the race.

Leon Locknut

well i still dont understand how come some people here say “today was fine”….was a totally disaster race….from the marshaling, to the riders…most for riders…from the 4 crashes today only one involved womans…the rest was PP saturday scene..crashes and more crashes with people that race and sprint for nothing in the wrong places….is just ridiculous how some guys sprint for a 15 place…other braking descending….anyways….PP scene…

Niels Post

saying the women were the reason a break got off the front? really?
probably right about many of them being off the back but if they’re off the back what’s the problem?

Bill montgomery

If you attended my qualifiers on June 7th in prospect park and have registered on the empire state games website, the new your city team can use a few riders we are currently short three riders. if you are interested contact me @ maddmongomery@hotmail.com the race dates are 7/21/2010-

looking forward to hearing from you

Thanks

The city should ban these stupid races. How can you let people go crash themselves every week? Sooner or later someone’s going to get hurt bad and it’s not right that it might be a non-racer park user.

Guillaume Limit Screw

Guys show some appreciation for the marshals. We should be thankful they get up early in the morning on the weekend to marshal, without them we dont race plain and simple.Same with the organizers and of course they have to make their money as they should.
Anyway I hope all that crashed recover soon.I know I avoided the first crash in the masters field by a few inches and was well away from the next two crashes.
As for the women, most of the inexperienced women probably feel they need to prove themselves and therefore feel the need to be aggresive.
I did notice that the more seasoned women were pretty smooth but I dodn’t know who it was that crashed(someone reported two women went down).
Anyway people be alert and dont do anything crazy.

Patrick

Some of you tiny dancers REALLY like photos of yourselves. Remember, I can see who looks at what, and how often. So I know EXACTLY how many times you kept clicking on that picture. I personally LOVE seeing myself in race photos, which is why I take all these shots for you guys.
I don’t get any money for these, nor would I ever ask for any, but if you liked a picture, or disliked a picture, or thought you knew what I was doing wrong with my camera, say something. Post a comment, tag a few, anything so it doesn’t feel so pointless. I know how many people look at them, heck after I posted the May 1 PP race, I had over 25,000 views in two days. Leave a comment, a caption, a race story, anything.

I received the following email just a moment ago:
Dear racers,

As you may have seen or heard, pre-reg for this year’s SpectaCross is down by 30%, and if we don’t get at least 150 more entries by July 28, the race will be cancelled and replaced by Monster Trucks.

I want to assure you that we are currently proceeding with plans for the race with the expectation that the needed entries will come in. After all, 150 entries really only represent 50 people racing on both Friday and Saturday.

However, in the case that the race is cancelled, we WILL refund your entry fees in full. And, if we can work out a clean way to do it with the folks at BikeReg, we will refund your BikeReg fees out of our pocket also because it’s the right thing to do.

Talking to both cycling people and the manager at the fair, everybody is of the consensus that our reduced entries are a function of the economy and that people seem to be waiting until the last possible moment to buy anything. This is not only happening in cycling, but in all areas of entertainment. I want to thank you for bucking that trend.

You can help us further by spreading the word that people are thinking about entering SpectaCross this year, they should do so immediately. We’ve only had exactly ONE additional entry since the news first broke on Cyclocross Magazine, and July 28 is a hard deadline. All entries are fully refundable, no questions asked, until August 1. And we’re even paying the BikeReg fee temporarily so that there’s no concern about losing the service fee if the race is cancelled.

Many of you know how much fun SpectaCross is. I know, because you’ve told me so. Please tell all of your friends the same thing.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 610-397-1950.

Thanks again,
Ken Getchell,
SpectaSport LLC
SpectaCross Promoter

i know it’s sorta early to think about cross but it’s never a good thing for a fun event like this to be cancelled. If you’ve never tried cross before, this is a great low-key event that is more in the spirit of fun. I know it’s not easy for people to get there but buddy up and carpool… meet new people, make friends, leave the race-face at home for one weekend……

ad nauseum

yesterday:

Armstrong did not talk to media at the finish. His hotel was right at the foot of the steep final climb and after crossing the line, he quickly turned around and rode back down the course, leaving his bodyguards and his special team car (dubbed Air Force One) beyond the finish line.–from cycling news

Please pipe down at races. I never heard so much blabbery in a morning. Lay off the coke and coffee. Shouting at dudes does nothing but highlight yourself and the fact that you’re a blaaaaaaabermouth!

Robin Plug

You seem to know a lot about where the women were racing in the pack which can only mean you yourself are pack fill. get to the front, stay in the front, and you won’t even notice the women.

Seems like a lot of the master’s these days are cat 4’s in disguise.

Mathias Ferrule

I SAW JP PARTLAND ATTACK….

TWO (2) TRAFFIC CONES, MAYBE MORE.

seriously though, what is wrong with you. that’s not a question.

mr. sexist

@ robin plug

good advice…but I was actually at or near the front most of the race and hardly saw them after the start in which they clearly interfered with the race. but plenty of others complained, I’m not the only one who thinks they don’t belong with the masters.

Ilias Nipple

I attacked a brutal egg & cheese on a roll yesterday, then rashed hard on the couch for about 45 minutes.

so…we complain when there aren’t many women registered for races (why do they get a field??) and we complain when they don’t have a field and ride with us. got any big ideas? or should they be home making the breakfast for when we get home all hungry and such?
how did they interfere again?

Race For The Wine presented by Cycles Gladiator
July 18, 2010
Brooklyn, NY

Pro/1-2 and Category 3 Handicap
50 miles
51 starters

1. Anthony Lowe (CRCA/Die Hard-Think Racing)
2. Paul Burrowes (WS United)
3. Daniel Zmolik (CRCA/AXA)
4. Alexander Barouh (Kissena)
5. Tom Bencivengo (Champion System Racing / Cycles Gladiator Wine)
6. Allessandro Matteucci (BVF)
7. Horrace Burrowes (WS United)
8. Igor Volshytn (Champion System Racing / Cycles Gladiator Wine)
9. Kevin Rooney (CRCA/Houlihan-Lokey Sanchez)
10. John Loehner (CRCA/AXA)

Brief Race Report: The Floyd Bennett Field course once again served up pure suffering as the sweltering heat took its’ toll on the riders over the 50 mile race. The Cat 3’s started with a 3 minute lead and were only losing 10-15 seconds per lap early on until a few riders touched wheels and the resulting crash split the Cat 3 field and disrupted their paceline. Back in the Cat 1-2 field, Champion System and AXA were driving the group and in the process splintering the Cat 1-2 field. With 12 laps to go (28 miles) a select group of Cat 1-2 riders caught what was left of the Cat 3 field and a lead group of 16 riders formed. With all the local powerhouse teams in the break the Cat 1-2 field quickly lost time to the front group which contained a mix of Cat 1-2 and Cat 3 riders. With 10 laps to go John Loehner attacked and quickly opend a lead. Champion System and WS United gave chase and Loehner was caught with 7 to go. A series of counter-attacks occured and when the smoke cleared a lead goup of 5 emerged: Anthony Lowe, Paul Burrowes, Daniel Zmolik, Alexander Barouh and Tom Bencivengo. They quickly opened a large lead but with 5 to go they became a bit disorganized and Barouh attached and tried to go it alone solo. He was caught with 3 to go and the counter-attack gave way to a 3 rider break of Lowe, Burrowes and Zmolik as they enetered the final lap. When these 3 riders started watching each on on the fnal lap, Baraouh and Bencinego rejoined but in the end Lowe outpowered them all in the final sprint to claim 1st place and a case of Cycles Gladiator wine.

Category 4
27 miles

2. James Mahlman (BVF)
3. Celestino Hernandez (Mexico-NYC Cycling Team)
4. Dan Reiners (Kissena)
5. Leonard Galati (CRCA/NYVelocity.com)

Brief race report: Non-stop attacking was the order of the day with a group of 4 riders attcking late and holding off the field. BVF made it a 1-2 finish with Nathan Archibald attacking his breakaway companions to take the win ahead of his breakaway teammate James Mahlman, Celestino Hernandez and Dan Reiners. Leonard Galati won the fieldsprint to take 5th place. In a generous post-race gesture, race winner Nathan Archibald gave each of his breakaway companions a bottle of Cycles Gladiator wine from the case he won.

Category 5
12 miles
21 starters

1. Kevin Schmitt (Peak Bikes)
2. Adel Sarhan (CRCA)
3. Alfonso Torres (Mexico-NYC Cycling Team)

mr. sexist

i’m all in favor of women’s racing..I just don’t think they belong with the masters – for lots of reasons.

Mabye a better (if imperfect) solution would be to send them off with the Cat 5s…at least then they might have a few more laps to actually race after the men finish.

Alexander Barouh

Minor correction to a very accurate race report.

The break at three to go contained Lowe, Barouh and Bencivengo. Burrows and Zmolik were chasing and caught back.

Thanks for putting this on, Charlie.

Thanks for the correction. My brain was baking out there too!

That sounds like it was an exciting race to bad I couldn’t make it this time around.
Charlie I. is working harder than a solo breakaway at Floyd to make these races happen.
Thanks Charlie I.

ray alba have 11 champion system guy in pp on saturday.and best placing was 15th!! also the same 11 at fbf best place was 8th what a shame

William Grips

and Germany had 11 guys in the worlcup and none of them won the trophy. what’s the deal here?

ERgometor

When on average 10% of the posts are positive and those ussually relate to someone posting pictures of the local PP or FBF race. Bike racing is on a downward spiral and guys like Ray Alba, Jed, Charlie I, and all the other shops and sponsors need to be praised for their efforts. All this “u suck” “wheres my top 25 PP result” etc is so tired.

This shit is just for fun and none of us are going to the big show.

To the Setanta guy who crashed himself Sat,
When you see people slowing down in front of you, apply both breaks with even force. If you grab the front brake lever by itself and with all of your strength that little left hand of yours can muster, you will end up face planting just like you did. It was a miracle you did not take anyone else out with your Cat 5 bike handling.
May I suggest you focus on TT’s?

Ray Alba

Look, I admit I got carried away on Saturday and certainly was not actually impressed with how we rode as a team this weekend. Though, we did give some valiant efforts at times to try to get the win. We were in numerous breaks on Saturday and yesterday Tom Bencivengo created the winning break with Daniel Zmotlik. He got 5th given that he isn’t a sprinter. Still not bad but, certainly not what we wanted or expected given the number of riders we had in-town for our sponsored event. However, given the misfortunes of this weekend I am sure we will improve and I for sure will improve as a person which is something I am certain of.

As for those idiots that feel like they can blast someone and be to much of a chicken to post their name, well it just goes to show the public what jerks your are. Maybe next time you should take a moment and think to yourself, what am I (meaning you) giving back to the cycling community? Seriously, how are you helping it, or for that fact this site? I would suspect not much.

Lastly, get some balls. Seriously, have something to say about me, post your name.

Can i have a free kit please, i want to be one of the 25 guys you enter in the local crap fest races.

my qualifications are as follows;

i scored 700 on my sat
i can only ride behind other riders
i like to yell at my other teammates to get to the front
i think we should have numbers in breaks even though we can not drive them

Arnaud Torque

Unfortunately it wasn’t actually 50 miles, more like 45. I think they cut laps because no one wanted to kill it in the heat.

Great race, though.

Hi folks,
I just visited with a friend who’s in the hospital following a crash in the M35+ field in Prospect on Saturday. He’s pretty badly banged up.

It sounds like he was involved in a crash with someone on Major Taylor and someone in a grey jersey, at the front of the race, somewhere after the turn before the Temple, on the first or second lap.

He’s really interested in seeing if anybody saw what happened. He’d really like to know. If anyone reading this saw it, or knows someone who did, please have them get in touch with me at montesano at gmail dot com.
