Hopeful Friday 6/6/2008

Section head text.

Saturday is the Empire State Games Qualifier, 22 laps for the men, and 15 laps for the women. So if you really need the miles in Prospect Park or your desire to get a free tracksuit outweighs your aversion to racing with absolutely anyone that shows up — this is your day.

Sunday brings the Tour of Highbridge in Highbridge, NJ.

Sunday also brings the CRCA FBF time trial – the forecast calls for heat, but I imagine the forecast also calls for pain, if you will, with all due thanks to Mr. Waits.

Free donuts and coffee for fattest guy to show up in full assos and Serotta carbon and get dropped on Central Ave.

Christoffel Prinsloo

Tony told me last night that Ken is in good form and that he will break 24 minutes. So will Dan Zmolik I think. Will O’Donnell will take it with a high 22 minute effort, say 22:47 with Zmolik 2nd with 23:32 and Ken third with 23:48. If on the other hand O’Donnell has a good day it’s going to be a mid to low 22 minute effort.

shaw

you’re all sleeping on jon chodroff from empire. he’s listed as starting the FBF TT and will be the one to beat.

Anonymous

Chodroff vs. O’Donnell. It will be interesting to see how the good Dr. compares to the newbie pro. I will compare how bad I am to them both. Zmolik and Harris will be fighting for the best of the rest. I will be in the rest category.

Anonymous

On a flat course (FBF qualifies) I pick O’Donnell over Chodroff and Zmolik. If it were uphill I would pick Chodroff to beat O’Donnell.

By the #'s

Based on one of those on-line wattage calculators, Dr. Will needed to average about 380W to maintain his 46.7kmph pace from the NJTT. Based on the same on-line magic, Ken needed to maintain an average of 375W to solo the last 2 laps of that park race on a road bike that he won.

These look like pretty similar athletes to me.

PR

I heard that the road surface at Floyd is really rough. What do people think about running a mountain bike with aerobars fro the TT? I see people on the bikepath with this set up and they are usually going really fast

Anonymous

I doubt that the online calculator accurately accounts for each rider’s different aerodynamics; based on his other races and posted numbers, I’m guessing that Dr. Will actually averaged just around 350 W in the Jersey TT – this tells you how aero he is.

Anonymous

Most on this site have no idea just how crazy fast he is on TT bike this year. He has done the windtunnel thing, lost weight and smokes top Cat1s and 2s on all courses. The guy is a beast. He will win FBF and smoke Harris. No question. Call him what you want (Sandbagger etc) the dude is fast. He smoked Lundgren, Roger A (two fast guys)last week at NJ TTs.

Anonymous

I heard Dr. Will shaved his eyebrows off and had his testicals removed because it allowed him to get lower and more aero on the bike.

Anonymous

when analyzed on some ridiculous computer program is not a good equivalent. The proof is in the pudding. Will O’ will show what being aero is all about. I’m starting minutes ahead of him and my new goal is to not get caught. I know, I know – pretty sad standards for myself.

We should set up an OTB at Floyd; I’m sure some of the finance guys here can manufacture some kind of derivative whereby we could wager on the relative chances of Dr. Will beating Big Brown (the equine one) in some sort of watt-per-kilogram adjusted alternate universe…

If O’Donnell’s not fried from Saturday’s TT + Crit, I think he wins. I’ve seen first-hand just how fast he is. Not only is he stupid-wicked-wind-tunnel aero, but he’s super disciplined and has uber powerful engine for this specific discipline. I think he’s placing easy at Nats. Easy. He’s a human missile on that P3. I just have to respect that…

I would love to do the TT and see how I’d do against Zmolik (who broke his stem at Silver Mine) and Ken Harris (who I’ve never beaten). But I’ll be in Atlantic City covering the Kelly Pavlik fight. I’m getting old — I’m actually blowing off a race (a TT of all things!!!) to have some fun.

Good luck to everyone and I look forward to seeing the results. I foresee it coming down to Zmolik (who should be fresher) and O’Donnell. If O’Donnell has a great day, he wins big. I don’t mean any disrespect!

If you are willing and able to spend the money to go to a wind tunnel your TT’s will improve. Money can not buy you work ethic but it can help you get a slippery position. TT’s can be thought of as watts/CdA (just as hills climbing prowess can be thought of as watts/kgs) The person with the highest w/CdA wins. At some point in ones training, the law of diminishing returns says that you wont add many more watts for the amount of work it would take. A visit to the wind tunnel can “add” 20-30-40-50 watts in an afternoon. (well you prolly have to train in that position as well) So it seems obvious to go do that.

Anonymous

you play by the rules of the race. The PA TT did not require UCI bike regulations, so why would anyone feel they need to conform to standards which are not in effect? the question should be why others, without being required to ge ttheir bikes within UCI spec would run their equipment in UCI spec if they didnt feel it was fastest? UCI spec was in play today so everyone had a chance to run their fastest setups. They ran theirs. odonnell ran his. They got beat. Dr. O’Donnell was fastest.
