This coming weekend the parks in the city will be on FI-AH! Saturday has the Lou Maltese Memorial in Central Park. Â Also on Saturday, for you Jersey people who like to ride long distances, is the New Jersey State Road Race Championships in Bridgeton, NJ.
Sunday also brings many more racing opportunities. If you’re in the CRCA, you have a choice of a club race in Central Park, or you can mosey out to Prospect Park for the Cadence Prospect Park Series.  If you’re sick of the parks, you can go to the Union Vale Road Race.  Or if you are feeling especially frisky, you can race in the morning and then head out to the Meadowlands and race in the afternoon in the North East Regional Criterium Championship at the state fair. Rumor has it that first place gets money and the chance to be a carnie for a day!
This means that I’ll win the Lou Maltese tomorrow!
which team wins Maltese?
Rain!
Mengoni will make it 3 in row.
I didn’t write that last post.
Who is this Andrea Peron on the Mengoni roster? Not the CSC retiree?
So who is invited to the Lou Invitational race? Is it 1-2-3? Mostly CRCA sub teams or others too?
It’s more than three. (There were a few years when the Maltese didn’t have a 1-2-3 field.)Scroll down to previous results:
http://www.crca.net/racing/open/maltese/
Who on Mengoni is gonna win that? Wilson is the only one with a chance if it comes down to a sprint. no way.
Rashad or an Empire racer.
Rashad is a ghost of what he was in March. No way.
Lisbon
rashad gave up trying to win yr stupid park races. didn’t you see his giro di jersey result? not a ghost.
My pics are Chadd Butts of Champ Sys, or Rashad if he gets in a break. If it is a Field Sprint them Wilson. Lisbon is not on the start list.
oh yeah? Did he win Giro de Jersey? k.
Ah, I’m guessing Lisbon is doing Cox Charities instead.
Cool that this site makes no mention of NRC races.
Pro1-3 – Roger A or Justine Lindine (Just won last stage of Ohio Tour and Housatonic). Roger is always a beast.
3/4 – Lots of guys can win this. My pic is Evan Cooper of the Junior Development team. Maybe Andrew Bernstein who was 3rd at Balloon or Joe Straub.
did YOU win giro di jersey?
ok then!
Of the readers here won’t be doing NRC races, the site is for them. And does NRC stand for Nobody Really Cares?
So, this site is for shitty bike racers?
no, I didn’t win Giro, nor did I do it. I have a job. Unlike Rashad. And he still didn’t win it. He top 20’d. that’s not a win. I don’t see how facts are trashing.
Based on your logic, I’d say Mr Margarite will win, as giro de jersey is apparently the litmus test for Lou Maltese.
Mike Hunt will win… Is there a Mike Hunt here?
I’ll put Colin P and James M in 2nd or 3rd.
Who?
Sarah Chubb wins Maltese 1/2/3, she is nationally ranked after all.
is win the first spring series race. then, the hate is on for the rest of the year. if rashad had won the second race rather than the first, no one would be hating on him.
Reed Alborgotti has a good article in today’s WSJ in the Weekend section, highlighting the Green Jersey competition in this year’s Tour.
Page W4
Does anyone here like Mike Hunt? Has anyone here ever seen Mike Hunt?
Yeah that totally makes sense, win the first race and everyone hates you all year………
Rather, I just hate everyone that never wins.
I have Adler $ for winning Maltese. Adler is the new Empire.
you mean, you’re the new Foundation.
I think there’s going to be an upset from Skids-Cannondale or Scummerville. Peron’s ass goes down in the 5th. Who is proasshit anyway?
Why is Adler the new Empire? That doesn’t make any sense.
Proasshit is a hedgefund based it Stockholm, why do you ask?
scummerville huh. Thats not very nice.
i see that sids has DJ
speaking of winning the first spring series race, what happened to miguel morras?
edwin morel is winning maltese, unless it’s raced for a sprint, in which case, wilson. however with 19 burrowes brothers registered, WS United looks good for the team competition.
Some will be riding Cox on Saturday.
when aren’t they riding cox?
the real question is, will United and Foundation be able to race without getting into a brawl?
I understand it is helpfull when you are day of….but unless you are a big race then I think it is stupid, so I might be up for Unionvale 1/2 this weekend, but not sure yet, had to make the decision yesterday, only 28 guys in teh race…doesn;t make much sense.
James M – I assume this is Jame Morrison. He is not racing and has no business being a 3 anymore. Has more upgrade points for Cat 2 then Prensky has for Cat 3. He is the ultimate Sand bagger.
who the hell is Jame M? If we never heard of him, is he still a massive ‘bagger?
decided by the team’s overall points, not who crosses the line first. With that in mind, it is hard to bet against United and the Burrowes clan.
douche bagger
Prensky is not racing Union Vale
do I get points for trying then?
Sort of an easy call. Lindine, Asphol, Rosenthal
CCB/Volkswagon…. Cat3 (top 4 at Battenkill, Jiminy, Sterling, Palmer) won Baloon, Won Syracuse Stage Race overall and a few top 2s in the stages. Dude is a beast.
You would only know of him if you raced Cat3 out of town. Him, Friefelder, Ernest Taukest have prob 35-50 upgrade points each. Super strong riders…
He is registered for Unionvale…
Also top 5 at Housatonic.
that morrison dude is truly a sandbagger, look at his results page!
an overrated poet too
NYC racers upgrade asap – sometimes too soon. VT, MA, CT, NJ seem to milk their current Category for all its worth. Morrison would be a strong Cat2 but he chooses to dominate Cat 3. To everyone but NYC racers its fine. He is also a great Cross racer. Before Cat3 he dominated Cat4. Why upgrade to Cat2 and be pack fill like 90% of the Cat2s in NYC when you can light up the big Cat3 races out of town?
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain

I can see the logic of wanting to win bike races – we all want that! But the whole point of the cat system is to move up once you show clearly that you are the fastest among your current peers. Without that logic holding, the cat system would end up in chaos, and we would re-name our sport Tri-Cycling or something, since we would all sit around and talk about “personal best” wins instead of just trying to win the hardest bike race that we can reasonably compete in.
Point is – the NYV scene is more focused on upgrading. Guys are so into what Category they are. I know guys that are Cat2s and if you look at there results = Nothing before or after Cat2. Then guys who dominate every level. Morrison has been a Cat 3 for almost a year at most. I would say he should get at least one full season as a cat 3. Its not like he has been doing this domination for 5 years. I think he will likely upgrade after Fitch or GMSR if he is doing either. I am sure the Cat1s and 2s on CCB would love to have him racing with them.
without naming names there were many 4-3 upgrades last year and this year that just don’t make any sense-no results to speak of-how are these people getting the upgrade?
Doh! “Their” not There…
10 top 10s or tons of pack finishes in big crits or RRs out of town. Guys who got the upgrades did more than just CP and PP every weekend. Bottom line is there is not much of a difference between Cat3 and 4. The 3s are deeper but the top guys are about the same.
‘there’ is used correctly jackass
haha, no it isn’t, asshat
Stop it with the bitching about grammar/spelling. We’re talking about upgrading/sandbagging!
dude, how will morrison ever go PRO sandbagging like this, pathetic! you aren’t a real racer unless you can make cat1 from cat4 in a year, maybe two. Real racers cat up fast, crash a lot but get all the honies.
You are 1) on crack, 2) on Clear, or 3) upgraded to 2 maaany years ago and simply have a hazy memory.
Its just NOT correct to say that. Top 3s are well ready to compete with 2s, just as top 4s are well ready to compete with 3s, but top of any field is NOT similar to the BULK of field below. Thats a FACT, man.
is usually done out of self-preservation. You are rolling the dice each Cat 4 race and praying that you finish in one piece. An upgrade to 3 is like getting a doctor’s note in elementary school which excuses you from gym class for the whole year. Cat 3 to 2 is a more serious jump and unless you are completely dominating Cat 3 races, there should be no hurry to upgrade.
do we have to make a list of all the cat 3s who upgraded in last year, or havent even done so yet, but still beat most 2s right away – Rashad, Will O, and so on. Got a single cat 4 name who can even hold the wheel of either of those guys, or the myriad of others like them? Noooope.
Thats fairly accurate and fair…
… the time to hesitate is through
just cause you are a cat3 in the local area don’t really mean much.when you’re only doing c.p,p,p races and not even placing.then you go out of town and get your S kicked.is more then holding a wheel and avoiding chashes,is about being competetive and getting results.
“I know guys that are Cat2s and if you look at there results = Nothing before or after Cat2.”
Umm, there are plenty of guys who upgrade to 2 and don’t do anything more, but by definition guys that upgrade to 2 got results in the 3s before they upgraded.
alot of 2’s never are to be seen in the results after they upgrade because they are grinding gears against teams like Rock Racing at the big out of town races. it is an all out war out there at the big races. you cat. 4 hero’s eventually have to realize that you gotta play to win
Chodroff could win p1,2. His skinny ass legs can climb.
Who had only top 20s as 3s and are now packfill 2s. Not naming names.
+1 on that.
Are there points for 15th place?
please name names
“Got a single cat 4 name who can even hold the wheel of either of those guys, or the myriad of others like them? Noooope.”
Its spelled Prensky. P-R-E-N-S-K-Y.
Until a few weeks ago I could have given you P-E-P-P-O as well. There are others, but you get the drift.
Dude can hang with 3s no prob
Biggest difference in the Big Out of Town Cat 3 races is that any one of 50 guys could win. And the others are all super fit for the Category. The level of riding is much more even. Cat 4s – maybe 10 guys in any race can win. It seems that this is the same for Pro1-2s. Cat 3s are super competitive due to the fact that the field is pretty deep and guys who are too old to train for the next level just hang out and dominate. Just look at Jordan Sagolowski. The guy dominated the 4s this spring. Since upgrading he has been pretty much pack fill. Its not that he is not strong but the 3s wont let him ride away off the front. He cant sprint so where does that leave him…? Answer – Cat 3 hell. Welcome!
yeah, prensky and peppo are strong 4s either ready to be or now turning strong 3s – meeting the def of strong cat 4 perfectly. As 3s they are still pretty good, but not on level of STRONGEST 3s like Will O or whoever. They will mix it up just fine, but not be jumping to 2 in no time. No exception to the rule here folks.
Peppo has been racing 3s for a while now. He was in Jiminy 3s.
please stop before it gets to his head’
Has upgrade points for 2 no? 2nd at the 3/4 Baloon race. Unless he was still a 4 when he raced Balloon.
Love how he posts his race recaps all over. He has a nice blog and is not afraid to write about his races. Good for him. Also – not sure if he is over rated but he has a top 5 at Battenkill and Housatonic and won High Bridge (one of the toughest circuit races on the NE). Seems to be a strong racer. Ony guy to beat him more is Prensky.
Why does this moronic upgrade conversation come up weekly? You’re all talking out your asses. People get upgrades because they get the points. Sandbaggers are making up for an inferiority complex. get over it. Race your bike, shut your mouth.
why do you guys look up other peoples results? What good does that do? It doesn’t matter. 3s dont upgrade to 2 because they are scared. plain and simple. As they should be.
against Mike Hunt and Ben Dover.
I have overheard Aspholm say that they are two different sports….couldn’t be more true.
Try doing a Pro1-3 race and you will see the difference between 3/4 and 1/2. I have done a handful and been in the hurt from the start. Jamestown RR – Pro1-3. Rob King, Mike Jones, McCormick and the local hammer heads just drill it non-stop. If you loose a wheel you are off the back fast. Johnny Cake this spring was scarey fast when Roger, Lindine, Kenda and some strong local 1s and 2s just hammered for 60 miles. The pace does not let up and the attacks are never ending due to the teams sacraficing racers for one leader. Its a who different world. I know a Cat 3 who dominated at the 3 and upgraded to 2 this year. He said to me “dude, I should have stayed a 3”. He is doing ok but its a whole different world. Everyone is fast and the speeds at the top of the hills do not let up for drinks they speed up for attacks.
do you guys collect fan cards of these guys, hang posters of them in your rooms and stuff like that?
Get his Cat1 yet. Dude is a sandbagger.
I got a sweet shot of Mike Hunt on my computer right now actually
Either somebody is sandbagging, or they are going to upgrade into a field that will crush them because nobody is possibly ready for the next step? Logically, I’m missing something. Don’t good riders come along all the time? They all come from somewhere. Everybody has to start as a 5. Wasn’t every good Cat2 a Cat3? So what if a good Cat3 is going to get shelled in a Pro/1/2/3 race. They aren’t PRO, duh.
scottish 4’s
do you guys collect fan cards of these guys, hang posters of them in your rooms and stuff like that?
if it was a different sport you would be in belgium or something.remenber you are not pro and most likely never will be.
don’t think 1/2 and 3/4 are much different upgrade to 2’s and go do Binghamton. Let’s see how long you gonna last. Some guys are going off the back on lap one.
i get it, 1/2 races are harder than 3/4 races. sheesh. nobody’s denying that. they are longer, faster, and the teams are more savy. that being said, guys make the jump and don’t get vaporized into oblivion. What is with this rule about upgrading to 2 and then automatically getting shelled out the back? How long, according to this law, must a rider be a cat2 before that rider is allowed to be ‘ready’
… harder, longer, and ready.
Thanks for all that huff and puff. I’ll still upgrade as soon as I get 20 points. Cat 4 races are a sketchfest.
Geez. Just race and have fun. It is cool y’all take this bike racing thing seriously, but come on. You’ve heard of pack-fill right? How about ny velocity – fill?
To not speak of upgrading or sandbagging for a week? Just a week, that’s all I ask…
Anyone know if they will be drug testing at Prospect on Sunday?
the Maltese? It is total team points right? I believe the first 20 earn points. With that in mind, what are the predictions? I say United, and then they should upgrade and sandbag. Sorry Dan.
when is schmalz going to upgrade?
when we all see each other we get along so great.
you’re full of shit.
i miss punching people in the face just for living.
I like Chadd Butts and I cannot lie!
I like butts too
Adler rode a smart race
Adler is gay
you got something against powder blue?
adler is a handsome bunch
jp portland won Lou Maltese
way to go jp congra
It says Ryan Tie from Bandit won with Ken Harris second and Eugene Boronow third.
Team Race
1. Ryan Tie CRCA/Bandit Racing
2. Ken Harris CRCA/Jonathan Adler Racing
3. Eugene Boronow GS Mengoni
4. David Taylor CRCA/Blue Ribbon-Translations.com
5. Doug O/Neill Deno
was shooting from a moto today! yehaw! there are going to be good ones.
good ones of you not winning
fishing?
did some of the teams not show up. the results seem weird. how does foundation not get a top 10 with lisban, ale-jet, marty, & wisenbaker. or toga or kissena etc. the results look like any other CRCA race.
Sorry to Adler hate. This isn’t meant to be too bad but it is ironic that Adler won the team race by getting a lot of guys in the race and then losing the race. They did the same thing last weekend. Not great team racing is you ask me. I would rather win the race with less guys in the break.
Inson will probably have some lame excuse why Foundation didn’t make the break
cox classic crit was today. NRC races are more of a focus for some guys. those guys happen to be on foundation or empire. right?
Empire and some of Foundation (Lisbon and Igor) at Cox. But lots of other dudes and teams there. Fast race, lots of moves, nothing really stayed away til the last 1.5 laps. Group of 10 or so.
??? Explain why Butts didn’t win ???
why just top 7 or 10 riders?
That break went on the last lap and EVERYONE was looking at each other figuring it wouldn’t stay. That’s how foundation, toga, sommerville, kissena all missed out.
don’t forget United
The trucks setting up for that running race made for an especially exciting and extra dangerous cycling race. Who has more pull in CP? NYRR or CRCA? Neither it appears.
it’s a bike race. shit happens.
how about ugli almost crashing like 4 times in the last mile?
the guy was SHAKING on his bike and running into people.
normally United, Mengoni, Foundation should hae chased…but no one wanted to take the bull by the horns as they still tried to stack the sprint. If you may have noticed, the break was full of hammer heads and barely a sprinter. Why would Mengoni work in the break?
How about the race was blistering fast and hot and the sprinters didn’t have it? That was aggressive racing in the park. Adler rode well and had guys in everything. Not sure how they botched the finish though.
late in the penultimate (I love that word) lap
A Foundation rider flatted right as the race started, so that team was down one rider from the get-go (I love that word)
Good riding by Adler and also by Tie.
Inson from Foundation got back into the race somehow.
Inson said the officials said he could ride but not sprint
actually that was me – not dave sommerville – that ugli was riding into. i finally threw him an elbow after the second time he went BAR TO BAR with me not once but TWICE.
whatever he was TRYING to accomplish there it was totally amateur. i guess he decided to go bother someone else because i saw him get tangled up and almost crash like 40 seconds later.
wow bad grammer. sorry.
New sprinters always think it is pro to bump bars with people. Actually it is JV as hell.
Didn’t quite know if it was Dave or not, but I was having emergency room flashbacks (Dave & I spent a long day in the ER once). That was pretty bizarre and helped screw my day up.
i was a few wheels back. he’s lucky dolan kept his head. less cool guys would have done much worse then flick him off with their elbow. it was kinda funny because ugli started crying like a baby after dolan gave him the elbow and dolan didn’t even turn his head he just kept on rolling.
were you at the emergency room with him when he busted his collar bone at mt. holly? i didn’t know him then but he told me the story years later and i REMEMBERED his crash like it was yesterday. his bike was 10 feet in the air going end over end.
also no need to appologize.
Good times..good times….
It was much more than an elbow, Sommerville the took his hand off the bar and shoved ugli.
so dolan, i’m sure you were a mature adult and went to go talk to ugli about it after the race like a grown up right?
talking to him here anonymously.
Was it true that Somerville was using race radios? I thought I saw there team car tailing the pack, but it looked like Parks kicked it out. They must have had technical difficulties with them, because they didn’t seem able to get anyone in the winning move.
I have 85.5 minutes for Cat 4 race = 14:15 avg laps times can anyone confirm via Powertaps or otherwise?
PS – yes its a question about the 4 race so save your flames…
Thanks in advance
dont have a powertap but I looked at my average speed after 2 miles of cool down and it was 26mph+
1+2 – 28:43, 25.4mph
3 – 14:06, 25.9mph
4 – 13:36, 26.8mph
5 – 14:28, 25.2mph
6 – 13:42, 26.7mph
1:24:38, 25.9
Did you beat him today? 41 and obviously the guy can still ride.
Some people in our little scene need serious psychiatric help if they feel the need to crap on decent competitors.
and no, I don’t even know the guy.
sorry meant to post to the maltese thread
Much appreciated “Cat 4 laps” and “Cat4”
BVF rider is the most improved Cat 3 this year. Riding super strong and had top 10 at Maltese. Nice Job to everyone.
Improved rider the guy has always been good now his potential is starting to show, the whole BVF team is have a Great season.
I heard Empire got 3rd at Cox
a pretty heated “discussion” seemed to be taking place among United post race.
We make 14 year old girls look positively well-adjusted. Who knew? Guys who like bike racing and post smack to websites are actually channeling teenagers before prom.
Tough call though. If you say “there’s more to life than the NYC bike racing scene” then you’re admitting what a small fish you actually are.
If you say “grow up”, then you’re admitting how old you are.
oh well. did your hear …
Oneil is what, in his 50’s and spanked most of the field, some young enough to be his kids.
has no need to talk to a pigeon after bumping bars, and only a cat 4 would think that is protocol. Bumping bars happens all the time, and dolan is an outstanding bike handler, so he wouldn’t think twice about it. to suggest that a mature adult would go up to ugli to talk about it after the race is beyond ridiculous.

Looks like they had another great ride.

Wasn’t Dolan racing for 50th place? I’d say getting your panties in a knot over a back of the pack result is pretty amateur.
http://www.catharsisfilms.com/cp_bike_race/pages/IMG_0177-4000.htm
actually if you read the thread i was simply confirming comments on ugli’s ride because i was an unfortunate participant in his antics. if you continue to read you will notice i never really made a bit deal about it.

Any place where you post full results?
49. You
just like to see full results, as it is interesting to see where guys ended up out of mini breaks.
simple question.
Chad didn’t win because Chad was racing in Virginia. He’ll be back to kick some ass next week.
JP Partland won Union Vale 1/2/3 – congratulations
Tough race as always. Super hot and humid with rain. 3/4 a bunch of annoying Aussies kicked ass and won off the front. JP Partland beat Roger?
I saw Peppo sprinting for a top 10 I think in the Pro1-3.
sandbagging
Who won the super duper meatloaf spectacular?
same group of juniors that were at TTOWN last tuesday?
They’re a bunch of 16 year olds and are a development side for Australia. Nice bunch of kids and they raced pretty well. Must be one great adventure. 16 years old touring and racing in the US. Must be the greatest experience a 16 year old racer could ever ask for
1 – not sure they were legit 3 but very strong nonetheless;
2- nice but annoying b/c they were really bad about the yellow line rule. They are at Fitch next week and the local juniors better be ready. These kids are fast…
So every race outside of Park system – they provide results, 60 guys finish, 60 in results….in NYC, 80 guys finish, and they provide 10 spots of results. If it was a $10 club race that would be fine, but a $25 real USCF race…if you can get out top 10 2 hours after the race you can certainly get out full results next day…it is a deterent to pople showing up, becuase certain people a 20th is an accomplishment.

And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain
There’s danger on the edge of town
Ride the king’s highway
Weird scenes inside the goldmine
Ride the highway West baby
Ride the snake

The snake is long

Ride the snake
Inson from Foundation got back into the race somehow.
actually that was me – not dave sommerville – that ugli was riding into. i finally threw him an elbow after the second time he went BAR TO BAR with me not once but TWICE.
whatever he was TRYING to accomplish there it was totally amateur. i guess he decided to go bother someone else because i saw him get tangled up and almost crash like 40 seconds later.
wow bad grammer.
Improved rider the guy has always been good now his potential is starting to show, the whole BVF team is have a Great season.
a pretty heated “discussion” seemed to be taking place among United post race.

I’d say getting your panties in a knot over a back of the pack result is pretty amateur.

actually if you read the thread i was simply confirming comments on ugli’s ride because i was an unfortunate participant in his antics. if you continue to read you will notice i never really made a bit deal about it.

Must be the greatest experience a 16 year old racer could ever ask for
1 – not sure they were legit 3 but very strong nonetheless;
