Hopeful Friday 6/23/06

Section head text.

Could be a wet weekend. Bi-polar predictions this time.

Ok, I’m getting a little burned out on the whole cycling world. The TDF seems years away, so I’m a little peeved today, so all of these race entries are going to be pre-flamed!

Mihael looks for the pack of cigarettes he dropped on the course.

Coupe des Ameriques

Axis, VB, Wonder Wheel all sending sizeable contingents. Good luck everyone, and remember: drivetrains go on the left in Canada.

What – a good old American race not good enough for you? Boo hoo! I have to go to Canada to get a win!

Prospect

Oy.

The hooker sister of the NYC parks siblings throws on her tart suit again and hopes to draw out the sailors.

CRCA

Points race! If Loehner and the Motor go on another long break together they’ll be eligible to file a joint return. Otherwise, tossup between Alessio and Molloy?

Team Challenge for the B’s. Can Edgemont hold off Adler? Ugly and Olsen too much for Slokar?

Oooh, please let us behind your velvet rope and allow us to race in your precious private club, Judge Smails!

Velocity Sports GP

Oof. Real creative name, by the way. Velocity.

This sounds like a pyramid scheme.

Weekend Schmeekend. Tuesday’s rematch will be the main event.

Did this site quit being as much fun once anonymous posting died? I know, I know, this page still allows anon posts, but it’s still quiet here. Seems like a momentum thing.

As another example, check out Aaron Wolfe’s fine article. Not a comment in sight, even though it’s an interesting piece and he said nice things about another team. In the past, no praise went unflamed, yet now, the praise just sits there and seems lonely.

Editors, have you checked your site statistics? Are hits down?

I move to bring back fully anonymous posting, the hate, the vitriol and the biting humor, and let me live my pitiful life knowing that there are other haters out there with a sense of humor, free to express opinion and wit in a free and spontaneous manner.

Do I hear a second?

Anonymous

Edgemond sucks you guy are loosers and other teems will want to beat you’re heads in too the ground so you should wach out and if it’s raining it cold be dangeros for you to. people are waching you accardy.

dude

My driver and possibly others don’t work with this site even when registered. They will work it out. Aron is the man, sometimes a fine article needs no comment. Ice works for the unflamed. Save high school humor for Dave Letterman, he gets paid for it, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Tony S

I agree with Jay, the number of postings has really dwindled since the "hayday" of about 2 months ago

Loser?

Is James Joeseph flashing the "L" sign on his forehead at Andrew as he crosses the finish line? Or is he just blowing some snot? It’s tough to tell from this angle.

how many times does it have to be said. FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY TO YOUR ADVERTISERS. bring back the anon posting and hate! whaddaya think we come here for, tarte tatin recipes.

Andy

We were losing contributors and interview subjects because people didn’t want to be subject to the anonymous abuse. We’ll find a balance. And you’re all idiots.

Hater was my fav! – ugliest bike in the pro peleton? The Toyota United rig. If you buy thier frame you get a free bowl of soup. super light and super ugly.

Toyota united rig?

Real pros don’t ride on carbon seatstays with aluminum fronts. It’s cost-cutting manufacturing (metal stays are more complicated) not a performance enhancement. United pros are the only guys with it. Taiwanese carbon stay bikes are cheap!

Hater

Hey, Jay F., if you don’t like it, why don’t you get your own site.

You too, Shen, figure out your "balance" somewhere else. Leave this site to us. It’s ours now.

is it really poaching if your not one of the top riders on that team. I say fair game

Lost the cupcake preme! God dam it, SHIT!

JJ is just a sprinter! And a good one too.

Lost 1st place $$$ and preme finish $$$ too.

Shame that Cisco left. Got to race with him only once.

List who you are then I’ll tell you more. Your right about the cupcakes because JJ got the win. And i was pissed because I wanted those cupcakes. Not bad for a guy that eats cupcakes though huh?

Tony S

Hey Nyvelocity guys from the B race today (you know who you are!). The disruption of the Edgemont chase rotation was a loser tactic. You say you were blocking? Blocking is supposed to be subtle and not involve disrupting the chasing team’s rotation. What goes around comes around buddy. I might get sanctioned by my team for posting this but I don’t give a shit. The disruption was total BS and needed to be called out.

Not Pissed Today

Edgemont better luck next race
Up the tempo, up the pace
Don’t wait and wait and wait
Chase went much too late
Blocking is good for the soul
Of Adler who sat back and let it roll
Rain instills, injects fear
Spring lounge intravenous beer
Tony you gave it your all
Worked at the front, made the right call
But Adler crew read it right
And greg won, out of sight

Next time!!! Same place, same pace.

Points Hunter

When will their be points on the menu?
Harlem Hill race, re-scheduled?
Anyone know, or care?
Points Hunter wants HH race!

Rick

I’m one of the NYvelocity guys, and the only "blocking" I ever did was simply following wheels and not helping with the chase, isn’t that what we’re supposed to do? Why are you only mad at us, wasn’t Adler doing essentially the same thing?

J Brown

Hey Tony S. (You know who you are). I can only assume that you are speaking to me. I found myself in "your rotation" once. That’s right, one time. and when i got to the front I pulled off. I suspect that this show of aggression is nothing more than your frustration to place anybody today. What goes around comes around? please. The break was long gone you weren’t closing it at all. I don’t even think I slowed you down much. Well I guess i’ll just have to wait for your rath. Your the guy with the red hair correct?

Matt S

I personally did not think it was very cool, the disruptions in our chase. Adler was much less intrusive, while NYV seemd intent on screwing us up. I don’t like that crap and neither does anybody else, but at least now we know who does it.

Rick

Admittedly, I wouldn’t like it either, but when your guys set the pace high and go a little off the front, it would be stupid for us not to sit on your wheel, just look at the TT results, your team is full of guys who might be able to bridge up alone. The Adler guys may have been more subtle, but hey, we’re new and learning. It’s only a park race, no need to get bent out of shape.

Matt S

Ultimately we most likely wouldn’t have caught them even if there were no interruptions due to the fact that they were flying. Never the less the disruptions were simply a annoyance when we are working hard trying to make something of the race.

Aaron

The NYVelocity guy on the silver Cannondale with the C number forced himself into a spot about 5 inches narrower than his bars going way too fast. That was not such a friendly move.

Rick

I know "annoying" is probably an understatement when your turning yourself inside out and turn around and see a guy that’s not gonna pull through behind you, but that really is "just bike racing" Those guys in the break do deserve a lot of credit.

Observer

Do a lot of the A’s not even want to race anymore? Should a large number of the A’s downgrade? Should the B’s go off in front of the A’s until the majority of the A’s get back on form or decide to race?

Also, even though it may be embarrassing, how ’bout the group of A’s that can’t hang let the B’s through when they come through. And how pitiful was it to see A riders trying to get into the B field to get a little extra?

Just sayin’.

Littlefield (Another NYVC guy)

I was chatting a bit with Aaron at the start of the 4th lap. Moments later he pulled to the right and headed for the front. I thought he might try to jump off the front, and he’s one of the guys strong enough to do it, so I sat on his wheel for the free ride. He didn’t try to bridge, just went to the front to work. I happened to be right there with him, with AA just behind. Sorry if I got in the way a bit then, but with 4 Edgemonts together on the front, I wanted to be there to cover anything that went.

B

OK guys, stop the squabbling. The game was over. You all look silly now.

Edgemont, props for going to the front and trying to bring it back, but you fuct up. Now end the hatin’.

shaw

one word – horseshit!

everywhere. tasted good. no need for that gel today.

i have no idea what happened in the pack. we had 7 guys back there so no wonder they got in the way. btw, we’re a developmental(ly challenged) team, so we still have lessons to learn. like i should have attacked before the 1k mark. my bad!

i feel like schmalz when i say this, but i feel like i was in love with all my break companions today. great job by all.

Bill

Woke up to a points race all ready to fight
Soon soggy race numbers moved left from the right
Some slipped away before the race got too old
Sadly 8 Edgies present but none up the road
All hands on deck to start with the chase
Pull through or rotate just make this a race
It came down to us to make the day tough
But we came up just short with not quite enough
And for the tall Puny man from the land of ire
You and your boys are still quite on fire
Though you’re rhyming report proved you have class
when it’s all said and done you can still kiss my *ss
; )

Jonathan

Hey how are the folks from the crash in the B field? I saw Jack B go over the fence and an Adler guy looked like he took a hard one.

Response -- Poetically of Course

Rain, rain, rain all day
Adler ROCK that’s all I can say
Slokar did some pulls
Now his mind mulls
Over – "Could I have won?"
Race over all is said and done
Better luck next time
Clean off your bike’s dirt and grime

Mad props to Ashley Collins for a 2nd in the Women’s field in her first ever race. Congrats!

Watch out, Andy.

Tony S

I wasn’t talking about the real blocking that went on, thats fair game, every team but us had a guy in the break (embarrasing, I know). I’m talking about the guys who a couple of times would insert themselves into our rotation, maybe like number 3 or so and let a gap form in the middle of the paceline. That happened at least 2 times. I have no problem with an opponent coming up and not pulling through on his turn or an opponent sitting in at the back of the chase and not helping, thats legit.
Anyway, I don’t want to be the grouch, we got our asses handed to us today, but rest assured, that wont happen again. Greg Olsen, you’re a beast – you are marked by me forever (until you upgrade, that is).

A. Cohen

Good work to EVERYONE in the B field break. Seriously, best CRCA break I’ve ever been in. Great job to the Setanta guy who hung in despite biting off a little more than he could chew.

Mike D.

I’m an easy guy to please. I don’t care if postings are anonymous, I don’t care that there is an unnatural obsession with Ken Harris on this site (hey I like the guy too) and I don’t even care that I’m supposed to give a crap about some Cat. 4’s wattage during a race in which he placed 34th.

However, the lame-ass poems have got to go. A lifetime ban for anyone who posts any sonnets, couplets or haiku from this point forward. That goes double for you Baldwin.

are you kidding?

these poems are the best thing on NYvelocity yet….
never knew bike racers had such cultcha!

t. brilliant

hey andrew, the setanta guy’s name is reed, and i’m not sure what you mean by "biting off a little more than he can chew", but are you saying that not everyone in that break suffered (meaning you)? yeah, it was crazy hard for him, but he made an excellent choice in bridging to the break before it became too late and rode the break cooperatively like everyone else. the guy’s strong enough and smart enough to ride a break with anyone in the b’s, even you.

one of the guys that got b cup points for his team today

It was still a B Cup race. The "points race" was eliminated to minimize sprinting in the rain, but it still counted for B Cup.

if there is lightning at 4:45am, what is the policy & protocol to race that am, cand the ommunication of same. ..riding 10 miles to bet the light. & thunder will disappear is an not a high probability option. ?? Master e mail blast 75 minutes pre race time?

Team B Cup Races?

What is this B cup point stuff? Is there a requirement on who can race in B races and who can’t. That just seems a little weak to have a B Cup series. Like have a cat 4 nathional championship race.

Olsen

Sweet work by everyone in the B field break today. Each guy took his pulls and nobody pussed out when it was their turn to lead. Rashad, nice job getting us organized and pushing the pace. Very strong (and safe) riding by all.
See you in the park.

shaw

wow, you know how easy it is to get drunk after these races.

race + world cup at 11am + beer = way drunk

i shouldn’t rehydrate with beer.

to t. brilliant: i think andrew meant it as a compliment. we all were saying afterwards that although he looked to be the weakest in the group, Reed never shied away from the front or missed a turn. it was a gutsy strong performance.

Jay F.

Shaw, why wait ’til 11? Spring Lounge opens 8am. Uglietta and I were there post-race but didn’t see any other racers there. Better than Endurox.

Maybe next week.

Baldwin

Oh pity my critic "Mike D"
For taking his dislike of me
And writing it down,
Spreading all over town,
his unmitigated distaste for poetry.

Steve Brownlie (NYVC on silver cannondale)

Aaron – sorry about squeezing through there. I was following teammate justin’s wheel and all of a sudden you guys were moving into the same space. I didn’t mean it to be agressive and if I had seen you half a second sooner would have slowed up to let you in. From my perspective I was moving straight ahead following a wheel and you guys were moving laterally. My reaction was that straight ahead was the safest way out of a tight spot (vs. sudden braking). So – sorry. I wasn’t doing it to mess up your chase and I certainly wasn’t intentionally trying to do something dangerous.

With regards to blocking your chase efforts – you’re giving us way to much credit to think we were doing anything entirely on purpose. Did you not see our total disaster of a "lead out"?? I’m sure you’re talking about the last lap as we weren’t really on the front before that. On the last lap we were trying to be near the front for a sprint without going too hard beforehand. If it got in the way of your chasing then I’m sorry. And in the future, if you really think we’re doing something wrong, feel free to say something as we probably don’t realize it.

Anon

HOLY CHRIST, Edgemont, see what happens when you whine? The site turns into whiner and pansy central.

Why don’t you guys just f@cking race for once, and quit talking about it before or pissing about after.

Either that, or just stick to time trials and roller races.

pw

But Mike D, I’m hiding behind my mommy’s skirt just like u, so you can’t pick on me. Baldwin’s at least putting his name out there, and, he’s pretty good to boot.

Anonymous

Cry a river Slokar, get a little taste of the medicine your team fed everyone back in March when you were in that 3 man break that got reeled in on Harlem Hill.

How do you think you stayed away for 2 laps? BS blocking tactics by your team. With alittle help from ML.

Etsu

I am from the NY Velo team who rode with Steve in the B race.

I like to first mention that the Merrill rider, who unfortunately crashed before the Harlem Hill, came up to me afterwards and graciously said that he was sorry for causing the crash and asked me if I was Ok. It was an act of a person with big heart and a true sportsman spirit, to say the least. I will "block" any attack or help him get away if I were riding for a guy like him.

As for the Edgemont complains – If you thought Steve was riding dangerously(though I disagree, but I won’t go there), you should have approached him immediately after the race and spoke to him directly. Don’t worry, he is a good guy. Why post a comment like that on this site?

I was one of the NYVelo guy who was riding in the chase when two Edgemont riders started were trying to sort things out(with the CRCA rider). At one point you screamed at the CRCA guy to "get the fxxk off the front"(necessary?) and was cursing why the hell YOUR fellow teammates were not there helping you. Perhaps, you should have a word with your own teammates before accusing other teams or individuals publicly(and please do not post that on this site, no one cares)

Have a good week.

In Amateur Racing,

Etsu

Anonymous

9 guys and not one in the break that gains 2+ min on the field in 5 laps?

Quit blaming NYVC, you clearly overslept.

Aaron

I don’t blame NYVelocity for the break not being caught. The break was made up of consistenly very strong riders, stronger than the chase we put together. We did have a rider in the break when it went away, and shortly thereafter our best TT’er tried to bridge. Our man in the break got dropped, and the the bridge attempt failed. I take that as a sign of how strong the break really was, and tactical errors on our part.

Steve, I shouldn’t have brought up our close call here. In hindsight it was just one of those things that happen, nothing intentionally unfriendly, I’m sure.

Tony S

OK, I’m a loser for complaining abot the blocking. I apologize for opening this stupid can of worms. NYVC guys, I was more angry at myself than anything else and was taking it out on you. You guys rode a good race.

Tony S

Jay have I made you happy now? Although not anonymously (I’m a dumbass, right?), I managed to bring a little flame to the board.

Jay F.

Thanks, Tony, to adding a little spice to my dull existence.

I hope the Monday Hangover can be half as entertaining.

Anonymous

this is the biggest group of whiners i’ve ever seen…maybe you guys need to get in touch with pulla and find out where to pick up some testosterone or you can go the old fashioned route and just grow a pair…great job saturday, coach olsen…

Jack B

The crash in Bs turned out lucky as all got up and rode away in one piece. I ended up taking most scenic path to avoid falling riders, but a bounce of the wooden rail into grass just left black-n-blues.

Something should be said about trucks and cars on the road during this race. We had two very close calls of last minute maneuvers around vehicles just standing there. I guess because it was a hard day for everyone, especially marshals, maybe the motos could ride ahead and signal obstructing vehicles off? Or maybe motos should slow the field earlier to make for safer pass?

Some guys in crash agreed that the car we passed before crash made them chase back strung out pack maybe too hard on 1st downhill turn.

A. Cohen

REED, to clarify my comment: You made a ballsy move that paid off. Your team was working for you and you refused to let that go to waste. Even though you suffered through cramps you continued to do your share of the work. Great Job! Seriously, great working with each of you guys. Rashad thanks for keeping it organized.
