Bear well run race
While it is a little confusing with the different fields on the course it is still a great race and one that had oversubscribed fields in just about all the fields. What a race and what a day. Congrats to all involved with putting on this great race. At least one cannot get lost or anything. Even if you do loose contact with your lead group, you’ll get there in the end.
Congrats, Stoffel. You rocked. Must be those SA beef sausage things you like to eat! Get me some.
Congrats, Stoffel. You rocked. Must be those SA beef sausage things you like to eat! Get me some.
Correction – Chris Mecray won the field sprint, he beat me by half a wheel. Great race. Stoffel is a beast. He weighs like 190lbs and was shredding the field on the last climb
guys in red in cat3 rode a super race. i remember they stayed near the front once their guy was away, and hounded anyone that went. frustrated the snot out of me for sure. then i remember on the last climb when it started to go pretty darn hard near the top, the one red teammate made a big effort to slam it up to the front , later, i think, nowhere to be found.
congrats to them for giving it up for the teammate.
i really have no recollection as to who was where.
one time they should order bib#s of different color backgrounds, different font colors, so fields can figure it out.
fyi, what was with the pony tailed, long haired frenchman (oh how we love the french) pink-jersey’s, pink croc-looking Louis garneua riding battling with the 3s? dude, we get it. 100 miles. pro 12, nice job but you got dropped. even the other pro12s who got dropped were barking at him. french, figures.
1st = NCVC Guy
2nd = Some guy in Green
3rd = The other CCC Guy (not JP Kaminski)
4th or 5th = JP Kaminski (3 guys about 10 meters ahead of the field)
whoever took the field got 7th
"It was a good day in the 4’s for Southafrica.net. Stoffel got away in a two man break and then Slokar won the mass field sprint that followed."
Anthony Slokar (Dir. of Open Racing) must have set some kind of Bear Mountain record by finishing that high in a race he organized. Great job!
It was a good day in the 4’s for Southafrica.net. Stoffel got away in a two man break and then Slokar won the mass
field sprint that followed.
I came up the last set of hills, and was passed half way by 303, and he was alone. He had .25 or .3 miles on me at the finnish, and the rest of the 3s didn’t catch me at the line. 303 seemed just a little too close to that mini van… but was looking fit!
To Bear 3:
I also thought that there was only two away and then Goldman from Westwood said that he got 6th and not 3rd. So 3 guys must have had some super stealth break cause nobobdy realized it. I was pissed because I though I had top 10 until I found that out.
It was however a fast clean race on a gorgeous day. Very well run and lots of fun.
I was very confused at the end of the 3 race. I have no idea who was in what field. I think it was two away, a two or three man break, and the field sprint.
who’s got em?
Gavi was 5th and our buddy assbalm was 4th.
I heard a Canadian (from VW Trek?) won the men’s p-1-2 over Lisban Quintero of Empire. And heard Lisban drank like 2 bottles the whole race!
In masters John Funk won with Paul Carbonara second.
bear 3 was a good race. who got away from the team in red? their teammates put in a great effort sitting on chasing wheels and gave their teammate all he needed to win. for just about that entire last 3 laps they kept saying "2 away, 90 second gap", "2 minute gap"…the darn thing just wouldnt come down! granted there wasnt alot of steady heavy tempo going on, but those lead riders earned every dollar.
but i have a question or two for anyone who might have been with the leead bunch on the last lap…i could swear it was just "2, 3 guys up front"….then there was the final group towards the line, some stuff there. the westwood guy got a great jump and beat the sprinters to the line after his teammate attacked twice on the runup…but i guess 2 orr 3 additional riders were up the road as well.. does anyone remember when/if that happened? no disrespect intended to those up the road, but i dont remember anyone getting away from the field until the line, olther than the 2/3 up the road?
anyone?
Christoph from south africa.net won the cat 4 race and well deserved it was indeed. Broke away on the final hill and managed to stay away with another rider from the chasing pack of around 20.
Great race and look forward to riding it again, congrats to all those who placed in all races,
Cheers
Phil
somebody give me smth, pls
WHO WON BEAR!
I think Lisbon won the 123 race at prospect. The race broke up into 3 groups. He won out of a group of 12.
Ride me. I’m fast and look cool.
found it on the uscf site:

head injury – a month ago following a six or 8 or 10 beer and bottle of shochu bender with russell i’m not sure if that caused the head injury or if it was windmilling the mic in the under sized karaoke "suite"
how did this become a free ad site for bandit?
"head injury at the Harlem Crit"
Where was your helmet?
Those bandit single containers are friggin awesome. i’m all for anything that enables me to drink where I shouldnt
One of the Three Thieves is Joel Gott. This guy makes serious wine under his own label. Check out his Zinfandel for a great red under $25. He would not be associated with a project that involved selling bad wine just to make a buck.
I was sitting on a park bench before the Harlem criterium last year and was hit in the head by a baseball. I saw stars for a second and it hurt a lot for about ten minutes and a little bit for several hours.
Didn’t seek medical attention, no concussion that I know of, no loss of consciousness, small bump on head.
The jokesters behind Three Thieves wines have helped once again in liberating wine for the masses. The 2002 Bandit California Cabernet Sauvignon ($7 for a 1-liter box) has a bright, appealing aroma of cherry, cherry candy and vanilla. On the palate, it
Three Thieves is a new venture that began in 2002. They find excess wine wherever they find it (in this case Napa and Sonoma) and ship it out in boxes. YES, I said BOXES
3s- Rufus
4s- some adler rider, maybe O’M
What happened in the race – it looked like the split in half.
even the 5’s
My post was just a joke. That team is crazy funny.
It’s hard to write about Jonathan Adler and not succumb to the temptation to use words like doyenne or maven, or guru. That’s because Adler’s backward-glancing, tinged by kitsch but never too twee line of ceramics and pillows has proven so astonishingly popular. Not everyone can afford an interior decorator (if you can, though, Adler does that, too) but most can save up enough cash for an Adler bud vase or throw pillow and therefore achieve some sense of chic.
There’s no way to take their act as grandstanding…I mean, how can you see the magnetic decal as anything BUT kidding around? I mean, this is a team that counts the Ric and Don Sasso among its members.
more interesting than another team sponsored by a bank or insurance company. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Jonathan Adler’s home decor is fun, fashionable, modern and affordable. He is one of my favorite designers. The store is beautiful and the employees were friendly and helpful. If you’re on a NYC shopping spree, and like modern design, I highly recommend stopping in – even if just to browse.
Lee4 in the 3s
I got my money on Olson
You guys are really going out on a limb here with these picks, huh?
Whats O’malley doing in the 4’s?
JP, Rashad or Olson in the 3s
Anyone that crosses the finish line like Boonen (a la knees together n*t squeeze) gotta be a regular booty bandit.
"Why we care about 3’s and 4’s". AGREED!!! We are the heart of this great sport. I find myself getting less and less jacked up about pro cycling with each fallen idol and every " I almost doped but didn’t really" non-admission of guilt that hits the presses. The pros are losin’ us, it’s gettin’ old.
Should’ve just called the team "Booty-Bandits"…
Race prediction:OM attacks hill 1 drops 1/4 of the field.
OM attacks hill 2 drops another 1/4 of the field
OM attacks hill 3 drops another 1/4 of the field
OM attacks hill 4 drops everyone else
OM solos to victory…………
<<SLAP!!>>
Wake up fool quit dreaming…
4’s – Copeland or Pascale, O’Malley’s looking like he’s been drinking too much cider…
Observer, are you a dominant or a submissive?
Ooooh, got another one. YESSSSSSS!
Observer, are you a dominant or a submissive?
There is a gay bondage bar named Adler down near Christopher Street. Do they sponsor a team?
Bait taken! Thanks DBag.
Is Adler going to go drunk drive that stupid RV up to Bear this weekend? They need to take racing more seriously.
Alas, there is still tomorrow.
Actually, they shouldn’t get a head start, since they’ve got a greater motivation to finish earlier and ride faster. Married guys should all get their seat tubes filled with lead pellets, to even out the odds, against the single guys.
Is that what it means to "get Zabeled"?
i’m going to say rashad also in the 3’s. i fear his sprint and hopefully if enough of us pick him, he’ll be jinxed and let us win.
I think it’s their team duty or something. They specialize in French sausage.
yeah, you take the bike path across the bridge, when you get to Roosevelt Island you rappel down to ground level.
Now that I know you’re reading this site, what are you serving in the feed zones? Is there a Vegan option?
Also, you should get the Bandits to do a BBQ.
Just my 2c.
needless DQ’s = continued racing at Bear Mountain. We don’t, no more racing at Bear.
Period.
Your authoritarian asshole and co-race promoter,
Alan
womens 1 3 – dont rule out Lauren Shirock BMW/Bianci – she has won there before.
Jeff King in the clydesdale division.
Wolfe, Rashad, That Rufus Dude.
Cat 4
Wisenbaker, Albergotti, O"malley
How many needless stupid dq’s by officials?
I guess only authoritarian assholes want to be cycling officials.
We care about 3s and 4s because its average joes killing themselves for the love of the sport and the feeling you get racing with 100 passionate cyclists who train hard in between family and work obligations. I would race with a Cat 4 on any course over sitting on my ass watching potentially doped up mullets racing for money and later getting disqualified. Cat 3s and 4s are the heart of cycling dude!
Talk to the Bandits BBQ chef
nobody noticed the front pic. pretty funny and completely juvenile.
Talk to Zabel
Who cares about which 4 or 3 is going to win Bear….<<snore>>
Giro starts this weekend, I’d rather be sitting back with a brew watching the pros duke it out….Wonder who is going to be the 1st nerd to post their wattage data for each of the climbs…<<snore>>..more useless info.
Talk to Ugli
Talk to Schmalz
"If anyone has a head injury story, could you please email it to me?"
None that I can remember.
Katie Lambden or Heather Labance for the 1/2/3 women and Valerie Hopkins or Ashley Prine for the 4s.
even on the Paris-Roubaix course the inner ring is a 46 for the pros because of terrain and to prevent chains from jumping off. They will most certainly attack Tiorati in the big ring and fly up there at the speed we do the flats on Seven Lakes. It’s still a great course.
That would explain this site.
I am writing a general interest piece on head injuries and concussions in athletes…specifically cyclists. If anyone has a head injury story, could you please email it to me? Important features would include the mechanism, loss of consciousness (if any), time of onset of symptoms afterward, duration of symptoms, and subsequent course. Also whether or not you sought medical attention and what kind of medical workup you received.
Email me at jaymuellermd@gmail.com.
Thanks,
Jay Mueller

an average world’s has how much vertical in the race?
Great course, and nationals have been held there. But I don’t think it’s on a par with LBL or a hilly Euro classic. The climbs are just not that steep. Good pros could easily big ring the entire course.
And for a hobby guy like me, at various points in my life I’ve probably big ringed almost all of Tiorati at some point or another (never all at once). Though nowadays I’ll be lucky to hold onto the main group in the masters….
I think it would be good for worlds or nationals (zero spectator potential though), but it’s not a particularly hilly course at that level.
10 laps of harriman (who decided the course was in bear mtn?) would be a 140 miles and 14k vertical? you could hold the world’s there.
Doesn’t have the same ring to it as Bear, geography be damned. Harriman is a cool course because any type of rider can win there. How many races are actually climber’s races anyway? Even in the pro ranks the pure climbers, guys like Rasmussen or Iban Mayo, seem to only make noise at stage races. Most one day races are won by strong men or sprinters like Boonen and Cancellara. Why? Probably because most courses don’t feature 10 mile alpine climbs but have lots of shorter hills instead that strong guys can power over quickly. Kinda like Bear.
The guy who said the hill at Bear would not show up on a Euro race profile is wrong. Look at Amstel and Liege, those courses are climbers courses with many short biting climbs shorter then the Bear Climb. Its not the Alps but that does not mean the course is not tough.
One of my friends went to a Bandit bbq last fall and he hasn’t been the same since.
Bandit bbqs are da bomb!
GI bugs are so hot right now.
I heard he was really letting it fly out both ends at Virginia, like some other guys. Boronow’s problems were (I think) more in his lungs and he didn’t go to Jiminy.
in the women’s 4 because that is such a hardcore oldschool New England-sounding name (don’t know anything else about her)
serious?! holy crap. that’s gotta be rough on the body.
day before the great neck crit
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4575
Zmolik had a GI bug that caused him to squirt out 6 pounds three days before Virginia, Sherry ended up with the same during the race. Several other local racers have had similar GI bugs, myself included where fluid losses added up to 11 pounds in 28 hours. So they were actually sick. Bouncing back to finish 4th at Jiminy is really a testament to Daniel’s strength.
Predictions? I think Empire has 2 or 3 who could conceivably take the big W, Canadians always a threat, and maybe Chris Jones. We are hopeful Morras can be in the mix. In other words, who knows!?
One thing is for sure…with the good weather nobody is going to get off the wait lists, including me.
Regarding the following weekend, does anyone know anything about the North Stonington race? I remember the course from years ago, what’s it like now?
Thanks,
Jay Mueller
but adler rides a smart race.
Has anyone ever gone to one of the Bandit BBQs?
it’s not just the climbing…Battenkill had tough climbs but also a couple of long easy sections. Maybe bear climbing isn’t so steep but the course is relentless…the descent, the hairpin, the climb, a shallow "bowl" where people attack, a grinding false flat to the feed zone…rinse, repeat etc. until you’re cooked.
Not an easy race.
Speak for your own lame team.
in lower cats (3, 4 and 5) we all race for ourselves and it is understandable. The guys who think they stand a chance might not openly attack while they have a teamate up the road but they all wish somebody would. It’s not like somebody gets paid to ride for someone else. Teamates might help each other to work at the front or in a break but that’s it and it’s fine.
eff you to the guy(s) who post on this board saying that local races aren’t "real" races. shut the hell up. we can’t control the geography of the region…races are hard when riders make it hard.
Don’t you ever get tired of this? Will you go away, please? No one cares.
I saw it works for your team.
ride for the same team?
Adler rode a good in fight?
that Lance doped
what do I get?
Lance doped.
You guys realize that the "mountains" at Bear wouldn’t even register on a course profile in a real race right……..
right, they ride for the same team. o’malley like to attack, and i figure collins can counter when/if o’malley gets pulled back. that’s what teams do.
should Zmolik finish anywhere near the front.
http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/cycling/news/story?id=2866845
By sick do you mean, disgusted by how crappy they are compared to pros? Don’t make excuses, cat 4s make excuses.
one of the canadians will win. they have a bunch and could make it really hard.
here’s who i like in the 4’s. i think andy collins could counter o’malley and take this. also prinsloo or jack piller from placid planet is a good rider who just had a good result at jiminy.
A Canadian will win Bear like they do every year. I also think Canadian women are better looking than American women, so clearly Canada is the superior nation.
hope for the locals
I got a flyer from the promoter during the spring series. Course is .6 mile 4 corner with a slight hill. There is nothing else that day. I will probably go.
Anyone out this morning? Have they repaved yet?
No directions /address of event on Bike Reg?
Rode through it last evening – it was not paved.
It’s paved
the road crews paved over the rough road last night.
It is paved.
If the paving crews worked 4 days a week at the pace they did this week, they would re-pave the enitre park in about a month. AT the current pace they won’t finish this year.
Saying they paved over the rough road is a sweeping statement. Which part? it’s pretty rough all over, other than Harlem 🙂
Chris Jones in the P 1/2, top three fo shore.
P12 – Some miscellaneous Canuck
3-Chris Shaw or Rashad
4-Wisenbaker
W Reem Jishi
40+ Stebbins or Officer (because Roger is in the P12)
Wisenbaker is strong but the Bear Mountain course does not suit him. He was repeatedly dropped on the short climbs at Battenkill-Roubaix.
The part that was dug up during this week was paved last night while you were asleep. To summarize:
Harlem hill was dug up and repaved. Then this week another section was dug up and it was repaved last night. As of 7:30 this morning there were no sections of CP that was dug up and not repaved. Better?
Short rectangle downtown, slight uphill and downhill
Lambden will do well in the Women’s race
"this week another section was dug up" another section of Harlem? which other section? At the bottom of the hill by the lake?
I don’t train in CP on a regular basis so while I’m asleep ( or not riding in CP ) I miss a lot of happenings.
3s – JP Kaminski
4s – Pascale, Copeland, Gentile, Witt
1/2 – Navigators guy
Great Neck Crit – whats the deal there is no information on location and course. Is this race worth attending?
ride to watch the race. meet at Jersey side of GWB 8am sunday.
ride to watch the race. meet at Jersey side of GWB 8am sunday.
Boronow and Zmolik were sick in Virginia
…he’s no 37 year old spring chicken like when he won the club champion ship on that course in 1993…..OK my numbers are a little off
on Tuesday and he told me that he really wants to win this. It is going to be a crazy 55.5 miles in our Cat 4 world. Hope I make it up the hill 4 times.
55.5 mile solo break away. Interviews himself at the finish line.
In the men, some Canadian guy, Loehner and a Kelly Benefits guy take top three. Quintero outsprints a small group behind with a Mengoni in there too.
In the women I’ll say Labance for the win. Sauvayre, Mara Miller, Shirock and Wellons up there. Maybe Koh and AMMiller too.
But guys I want to see do well. Zmolik, Guzman and Boronow. The nice guys.
In the women there are several past winners riding.
