This weekend brings an astonishing array of opportunities for bike racing. With no less than 4 races in the area on Saturday and an additional 2 on Sunday, there’s ample opportunities for ego fluffing or the chase for those elusive upgrade points. Even drinkers with a racing problem can take advantage of later start times this weekend.
Saturday there’s a CRCA club race, a Branchbrook race, a Johnny Cake race and a Brooklyn Spring Series race at Floyd Bennett Field. A dedicated racer can do two of those races, a racer with a Delorean that travels through time can do all four—so no excuses!
Sunday is more sedate with two races, a Spring Series race in Prospect Park and a Bethel race in well, Bethel.
There should be many racers out there doing a double this weekend, but will anyone be attempting a quad?
first
no exclamation point = DQ.
First!
There’s rules for “first”?
so only “excitable” cat 4’s can be first?
FIRST!
schmalz- just for maybe one day it should be a requirement for people to post their actual names on this site.
maybe you could find their IP address and then get their name. total invasion of privacy, but it would be cool to see which people in the nyc racing scene are the ones posting comments about taking dumps and cat 4’s sandbagging.
now that it’s snowing & raining out, will you go back to schmalz-beta? we want picture proof. make the leap.
No schmalz-bata (I’m assuming that “schmalz-beta” is typo—or there’s a newer version of me being tested—they really should work on the gassiness) for me today, and I can’t imagine anyone wants to see pictures of me hopping around in my basement waering nothing but bib shorts and apathy.
I’m game for a “name day”, but I imagine it would be a lean day comments-wise.
Apathy is the glove into which evil slips its hand
Are you saying evil is putting its hand into my bib shorts?
Was it good for you?
Going for the easy one here—it was “eh”.
going for 3 races can be easily done, many did it last weekend.
What about the quad—2 on Saturday, then prospect and bethel on Sunday?
Should there be a contest to see who can get the most racing miles in this weekend? Is there also something faintly anti-social and sad about winning that award?
have fun burning out in june: it’s march- wtf are you doing 2-4 races a weekend for? get some training miles in instead and wait for some racing in decent weather
this is decent weather
it’s better to burn out than to fade away…
“Is there also something faintly anti-social and sad about winning that award?”
you’re asking that here? like asking if there’s something faintly dorky about winning the best costume award at a star trek expo.
i got some great sex tips at the last star trek convention i attended. those romulan’s….whew.
I like burning out in June, then I can go on long lazy rides and lay on the beach
this is not decent weather, nor descent weather
winning the quadfecta, then being slammed as a sandbagger, and maybe even surreptitiously called a doper would make anyone’s season complete.
what I’d like to know is who is able to do this? Must be singles and/or childless. If you’re married with children and doing 4 races over the weekend you’ve gotta be a shitty spouse and even shittier parent, one selfish MFer. Prospect sunday morning home by 8:45.
16 degrees with the windchill. wtf.
Which begs the question, where is the sense of having 2 CRCA club races in the unpredictable month of March and only ONE club race in May and ONE club race in June.
If you win one more forum race you will be forced to blog on http://www.roadbikereview.com
This is not fair for the rest of us who work so hard at the internet.
(oops posted in wrong place first time)
Lets be honest, a long training ride will take just as much time as crca and fbf put together. Those saying a training ride is better than racing, quoting burnout and da wife, are really just not willing to pay for 2 races. This is the time for intensity training folks, so Gimbles or Rocket ride are no different from official races, be honest, it’s all about your bejamins…
Not 100% true. It depends on when the race is and the travel time to the race. I am married with a child, and it is much easier to get up at 6am and put in a good 3 hour training ride. Home by 9 and you have the whole day with the family. Some races allow you the same time with the family but others (Bethel and most out of town road races) do not. You are traveling, prepping, waiting, racing, traveling and the whole day is killed for 1 – 2 hours of racing. Its not the total hours on the bike but the total time to race and travel that is unfair to the family.
Guys in NYC and Brooklyn have it made as they can get a good hour of racing in and home before breakfast is over.
FGJ-WORD!
Hey Benjamin! A long training ride costs more than a CRCA race if you stop for coffee and a muffin.
i love the assumption that everyone is married and/or with children. not everyone fucked up like you.
Putting aside whether one is married with or w/out children or single, balance is important in life and in this sport and if you are doing 4 races in a weekend, most likely you wont be racing in 3 years as you will be completely fried. Take a day off, and do something unrelated to cycling.
Ask the veteran Cat1s that have been at it for years and they will tell you that the key to this sport is balance and not over doing it too early in the season.
I know you all don’t do EPO, I know this; but I’m gonna get you EPO-ed today, ’cause it’s Friday; you ain’t got no job… and you ain’t got shit to do.
given the choice between two evils, i’ll take the one i haven’t tried before
a “veteran cat 1” is either: a) a supernaturally gifted athlete who can perform at a high level with minimal training, b) married rich, or c) flat broke.
I think the only people that fucked up were your parents.
Blue-Ribbon guy is Jon Raheb
Crowd pleaser
Hopefully, some people can fill in the blanks for today’s CRCA race results.
After a break that lasted until Harlem Hill on the last lap, the sprinter on Think Racing that isn’t Ricky Lowe won the race, with Karl Rahn of AXA Equitable second and Blue Ribbon’s new sprinter third—is that right?
Can anyone help me out there? What happened in the B race?
#1. Karl Roesler (Die-Hard/Think Racing
#2. Karl Rahn (AXA)
#3. Blue Ribbon guy
I’m a dude, but if I weren’t, the 3:05 post would make me totally uncomfortable and skeeved out. Actually, it still kinda does anyway. I realize that anything goes here, but come on, people.
Really, why are you keeping that post up? Offensive and irrelevant.

Nice win for a super nice guy. He was a killer on the track in 08. For a guy who races once in a while he is super strong.
Brooklyn Spring Series
March 27, 2010
Floyd Bennett Field, NY
Pro / Cat 1-2-3
40 miles
1. Daniel Zmolik (CRCA/AXA)
2. John Loehner (CRCA/AXA)
3. Wilson Vasquez (GS Mengoni)
4. Jackie Simes (Jamis Sutter Home/Colavita)
5. Mike Margarite (CRCA/AXA)
6. J.P. Partland (Kissena)
7. Ben Woodbury (BVF)
8. John DeFallon (CRCA)
9. Karl Rahn (CRCA/AXA)
10, Sean Barry (BVF)
Brief Race Report: The field stayed together for the first 5 or so laps until a group of four escaped: Daniel Zmolik and John Loehner (both CRCA/AXA), Wilson Vasquez (GS Mengoni) and Pro rider Jackie Simes (Jamis Sutter Home/Colavita). The four worked well together and quickly opened a gap. Simes had to drop back to the field after stopping to fix a mechanical. Fearing Vasquez would win the sprint the two CRCA/AXA riders started attacking Vasquez with three laps to go and finally broke him on the last lap. First Zmolik got away and soloed in for the win. Then Loehner came in solo for second followed by Vasquez in third. Back in the field, the wind took its’ toll and once again riders came in one-at-a-time. Simes regrouped from his earlier mechanical and soled in for fourth, last week’s winner Mike Magarite (CRCA/AXA) soloed in for fifth, J.P. Partland (Kissena) soloed in for sixth, Ben Woodbury (BVF) soled in for seventh and the fieldsprint for 8th went to John DeFallon (CRCA)
Category 4

1. Leznek Sniadowski (CRCA/Organic Athlete)
2. James Mahlman (BVF)
3. Josh Parker (Kissena)
4. Michael Perlberg (Kissena)
5. Isaac Dinner (Columbia)
Brief Race Report: Leznek Sniadowski (CRCA/Organic Athlete), James Mahlman (BVF) and Josh Parker (Kissena) broke away early and held off the field by over two minutes with Sniadowski taking the win. Josh Parker (Kissena) rode most of the race alone and held on for fourth with Michael Perlberg (Kissena) taking the fieldsprint for fifth.
Masters 40+

1. Dennis Schwandter (GBSC)
2. Thomas Luzio (Deno’s Wonder Wheel)
3. Robert Lombardi (BVF)
4. Jacksom Wandres (Deno’s Wonder Wheel)
5. Samuel Frijas (El Rodaje)
Brief Race Report: Tom Luzio (Deno’s Wonder Wheel) escaped mid-race and looked to be soliong in for the win until Dennis Schwandter (GBSC) bridged with 3 laps to go. Schwandter took the sprint over Luzio with Robert Lombardi (BVF) rounding out the podium in third.
Category 5
12 miles
1. Rod Millot (CRCA)
2. Darell Vasquez (Strictly Bicycles)
3. Wojciech Plata (Kissea)
4. Joseph Mueller (Unatt)
5. Mark Sywin (Unatt)
Brief Race Report: The race stayed together with Rod Millot (CRCA) taking the fieldsprint. win. Interesting to note who finished second in the fieldsprint – none other than legendary New York fieldsprinter Wilson Vasquez’s 16 year old son Darell Vasquez in his first season of racing. Is this a changing of the guard?
Thanks to all the officials, marshals, pacers, registration volunteers and to Mr. I who spent the the day before getting the course ready to race!
The next race at Floyd Bennett Field will take place on Saturday, April 17, with the Kings County Challenge. For more info and to register online go to: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=10479
I was only there until the end of lap 4 (lacrosse starts at 8:00 AM and goodness knows 3rd graders need my guidance) but from what I remember/am willing to make up the first two laps weren’t too busy with a few break attempts getting pulled back quickly but laps three and four led to attacks on HH and there was almost a split in the field both times but we all came back together.
My water bottle froze too.
someone was filming video of the CRCA race… any idea who?
brief race result for branchbrook:
1 Pulio – Innovations
2 Rafaiel
3 ??? CRCA
4 Steve Dioslaki – Metra YSG
5 ????
6 Nick Masaluk – Metra YSG
After multiple attacks & couter attacks a breakaway went…it was roughly 25 minutes into the race. There was multiple representation by a few teams. Nick & Steve Dioslaki both of Metra, Rosenhaus & Raffie from Hardware, Pullio & ???? from Innovation, Rick Garguilo, Ed Ciccolini, a KRAFT guy, Herb Jiminez, John Durso of Liberty
The Kraft guy kept jamming up the works so the breakaway never did work like the way it should – a smooth running machine. Lots and lots of jumps, attacks and frustration was what it was all about for a large part of the time.
Near the end of the race, Raffie & Pulio rolled off the front without a whole lot of effort and we all f’ed around & watched. Their gap grew to around 20 seconds. A bunch of attacks were made but no one quite got them. That continued and Rosenhaus did a wonderful job in preventing any sort of organized chase-down. At the end, rounding the final corner before the finish line, Dioslaki made 1 last ditch super hard effort and got to within 5 or 6 seconds of them but was just unable to latch on. After getting caught, CRCA dude jumped and almost caught them. Rosenhaus & Durso both passed a SPENT Dioslaki but never satisfied, Dioslaki caught back on and sprinted past them both for 4th. Nick came in close behind for 6th.
Pulio won it. Raffie got second, and for the life of me, I can’t remember the CRCA guy’s name who got 3d. Someone – what the hell was his name again???
See you @ prospect tomorrow!!
I think the ???? mark dude’s name in 3rd place was Cibby. (or sibby)…
