Hopeful Friday 3/21/08

Section head text.

Still standing in for Schmalz. Branchbrook Saturday, Prospect Park Sunday. Anything else going on?

Last chance to show your prescient genius with a Milan San Remo pick.
Liz Hatch had Buddy Guy playing on her blog. Anyone here been to the Checkerboard Lounge?

PRo1-3 almost full and Kenda Team and Westwood seem to be sending big squads for the early season training race. Looks like fun… My money is on Lindine in a break.

Livin the Blues Bike Racer

Saw Buddy Guy and Junior Wells in a church in Syracuse NY. They couldn’t get the heat to work. While they putzed around I went and got a blanket and a case of beer. Great Show!

Anonymous

is AVD really gonna have his floyd race april 6 at 630 AM? Ugh…maybe ill sleep in the Delta terminal at LGA

Anonymous

I saw Ric Stagg open for Television back at Max’s Kansas City in ’78. Guy was high as a kite; rode onto the stage on a pink Olmo…..

Anonymous

they selected “Argiterrable” over Astana because of Christophe Moreau. What a difference he’ll make in the race….

…and slipstream is supposed to appease U.S. markets in place of Levi??? Miller, Dave Z, Vande Velde, Maggie, they are all players but not race maker…I’d rather watch Levi. Damn French

Rick

I’ve been to the Checkerboard, great music in a dicey hood. I usually wimped out and went to Rosa’s or Kingston Mines instead.

Anonymous

The let Levi ride campaign is pretty funny when you consider he wouldn’t even be the team’s leader for the tour.

Anonymous

Is that getting wasted and telling your ma she’s not the boss of you?

“enough Liz Hatch talk. Only 50 people went to that roller race for a reason.”

Correct. And that reason is most of you knobs were too nervous that you’d bust a nut in your chamois if you bumped into her by accident.

Anonymous

Is there anyone out there who has been a racing fan for more than 10 years and likes Levi? I can’t stand the guy.

Welcome To The Year 2000

this was a bike site where we discuss bike related things.
This wasn’t a site where the blues or anything blue (except a BLUE bike) or any other tired lame ass music is discussed.

pom pom

some guy from mengoni (i think) won the pro 1/2 in a sprint.

the 3/4 was won by some dude way off the front. nobody thought he’d get away. an adler guy crashed pretty bad in the sprint when someone whacked him from behind. hope hes OK.

Anonymous

Wilson Vasquez in the p2/3, Blue ribbon was the guy off the front in the 3/4, Aspolm solos off of a 3 man break for the last lap or two to win the masters.

544

Francisco’s crash looked bad. Hope he heals soon.

Roger Aspholm schooled the Masters 35 + I think he had more than a minute when he crossed the line.

Wilson Vasquez won the main event, layering and all.

4/5 – Dunno.

Masters 45 – Dunno, but when Roger gets that old, he’ll win that too.

And Ken Harris was wearing an interesting helmet.

Anonymous

but Cancellara is the man. “He might jump early and stay out solo”. I am much better at predictions than at racing a bike.

jft

but dont like him.

That Pozzatto haircut is so ridiculous. And I’m bald, so that’s saying a lot.

At Branch Brook Tom Luzio won the 45+ – soloed for several laps

francisco liuzzi

complete break of the collarbone, bruised three ribs but not broken and found out they misspelled my name on my new adler bike. bummed and can’t breathe.

Anonymous

I broke mine last year same time. 3 weeks you’ll be outside again, 5 you’ll be racing with the same form, maybe better w/ the forced time off. Heal quickly and send the bike back, you won’t need it for a while 🙂

Anonymous

Anyone see that Floxmax commercial with the 60 something dudes in helmets all riding hybrids at about 8 mph, looking very excited because they aren’t pissing their pants? Makes me crack up every time.

K-Fed Pozzato

YO, I second dat shit. Some of dem bitchez was all ovah da road, yo. I had my boyz rock som tempo up dat last shit, and BOOM there goes da hood with Cancellara pullin dat TT shits up da road. Fuck. Yeah, that shit is ruined, yo.

K-Fed Pozzato

You fuckin’ wit K-Fed Pozzato??
I’ll get Aston Kuschner to puck your fat ass, Beoutch. You seen my ink?
Word.

Captain Ed

Yeah, I love how they make us old guys look like a bunch of douche’s.You think you’re a tough young bike racer? I had prostate surgery 3 years ago and had to wear a leg bag and a cath for four months followed by three weeks of four times a day self-cathin’.And yeah, it is as bad as it sounds!

Anonymous

lindine wins out of a break. broke lap 2, got reeled in, broke with countering group, field brought the 90second gap down to 22 at the line, but lindine powers away on last rise. animal.
good prediction

In the red for 55 miles

Saturday’s A race was silly fast and so hard. Guys getting popped off the back out of the neutral zone. Like a belgian style race where the speed was on from the gun and never really let up until the end. Seems like half the A group (and some strong guys) were all dropped. Amazing training! I think 55 miles at Johnny cake is the toughest spring training you will find in NY.

Great win by Lindine. Look out for him at Battenkill when he has a full team. He had 2 teammates Saturday and Kenda Raleigh had 8-10 and could not bring him back. Also – WWV team and Keltic rode very well. Bruno is a guy to watch in the Battenkill Cat2 and Eric Merrill in the Cat 3 races.

Ray Alba

Will O’Donnell (spelling) was gone for most of the race today at PP 1/2/3. Joao, Rashad,Franklin, Euri bridged the gap Will hangs on for fourth, Rashad WINS big. Wearing the leaders jersey. I think it ended up being

Rashad
Joao
Franklin
O’Donnel
Euri
Sloan I thik of Sommerville
Zmotlik

This could be wrong

Anonymous

BB yesterday, I heard someone hit his back tire, but if that is not the case I do believe his tire blew before the accident. it definitely sounded that way: boom, scrape. Either way I hope he heals up well, he was riding a smart race up until that point, and I think he might’ve slip in for a top ten.

Anonymous

dude has some crazy fitness for march. very nice! is this guy still a 3? seemed like the pace was a little slow today. franklin rides for foundation?

Anonymous

o’donnell needs another hobby. he seems obsessive about training and racing. maybe he needs to buy a convertible. i can’t match his commitment.

Anonymous

he has a perfect hobby. He’s great at it and is committed or should be, not sure which. Super nice guy, great rider, always willing to work, and good for the sport. Oh kay, I’m done with my man crush now, but that’s my 2 cents. Kinda a shame he got caught on the last lap after staying away so long.

Anonymous

is everybody spending time with their family? I need a distraction from mine, and you are all failing me right now. Damn you NYVC posters, Damn you straight to hell…

Anonymous

I just left my aunts house and went home early. completely drained from the freeze this morning. Where the f is spring??

also this site has been lacking any commentary worht a shit for the last two weeks. oh and racing started so we should have shit to say…

jft

if the team’s like to get a better place with a field spring, then a chase makes sense. Plus, if the guy in the break knows his team is coming, it gives him a reason to sit on, which improves his odds if the move sticks.

Anonymous

Mengoni should have been chasing because Wilson was in the hunt for the overall points and Rashad was in the break. If Euri worked at all in the break that was a bad call as Wilson would probably have the leader’s jersey right now if it had come down to a field sprint.

Anonymous

chasing themselves down. I don’t agree with JFT on his theory here. I wonder if is poor tactics, teammates acting as individuals, or pure stupidity. I usually use it to help myself, but when in a break, I turned around to see a teammate of my breakaway companion pulling us back in (unsuccessfully), and had to wonder – WHY, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a free ride up to the break.

Frank T.

Why doesnt JFT start his own blog – he has all these observations, he might as well get some $$$ and make it worth his while. Get some sponsors like Giro, Bell, LAS, Catlike….

Anonymous

Just cause a team mate is at the front doesn’t mean he’s chasing. Can we have the blocking argument again now?

Anonymous

was there a CRCA conspiracy – putting all the squirrely riders on Foundation?

maybe the jersey are ugly enough to be considered “warning” for everyone in the pack?

chill out

You mean the spring series is not the most important race in the whole world?

How many guys on your teams are killing themselves right now? I think its kind of funny how many guys I’ve spoken to get down on themselves for not doing better in the spring series.

Anonymous

spring series is a good indicator of who trained this offseason and who didn’t. if you’re playing catchup it will likely be JULY before you are on top of your game.

right now its pretty clear who did their homework
– westwood – o’donnel roger duo is a breakaway force to be reckoned with
– wilson – who knows if he worked for it or just has it??
– RASHAD (rocking holmes good for you)
– sakkonet – belize paying off although where have you been hiding? no shows at BB or SS
– sommerville sports – solid results in almost every race spread across the team
– igor
– chad butts looked REALLY strong from champ sys at BB yesterday

adler – just kidding!!! can i have your cadence sponsor money?

I wear the lycra, she wears the pants

My wife yelled at me when I got home and said I didn’t place. She said she’s not going for that training race bull$hit.

Anonymous

is the most important race we have right now. Is it possible to “train” during the race and still try to win. Wouldn’t that be the best training of all? Both physioligically speaking, and mentally. Or should we do like you suggest and downplay the importance since we don’t have any results to be happy about? OR are you saying that racing a SS race for the win will be counterproductive to our “build” for the “important” races? 24 miles hard might ruin all the fitness I’ve been accumulating on the trainer this winter.

Anonymous

If one were trying to sharpen team tactics, pack skills, get strong high end work in their legs, and generally prepare for a race like, say, bear in a month, wouldn’t trying to win a SS race help?

Anonymous

I got more outta my SS races this year then I did from my 6X5’s, 2X20’s and 1 hour tempo rides on my trainer. Hell, don’t even have to know how to balance a bike when it’s locked into the torture trainer.

Anonymous

what your important target races are. I’ll let you know how my SS races help me to prepaqre for them, and how I do.

Anonymous

to race. If there is one available, I’m in. If I’m in, I’m trying to win. Oh, yeah, I also like to eat, so training helps me with that endeavor also.

Anonymous

is lame, its cold, and slow, and plays to the guys that train like crazy over the winter. Great, the season is about 7 months long, lets see who’s still around in May. Morras won SS last year, and disappeared very soon after.

Anonymous

If you’re planning on “being around” in May I think now’s a pretty good time to be in decent shape

Anonymous

and why do i have the feeling, that the guys calling others nancy boys are the ones sitting around in the middle of the pack all day long, doggin it, simply getting in the way of the dudes actually racing? You can pretty much delete the entire middle portion of a park race, other than a draft, they are worthless, and all of those that sit there, know it, as they sprint for 45th place in the joggers lane.

Anonymous

Its probably because they have so much energy left after doin jack shit all day to rag on the guys that are tired from racing.

Anonymous

def love spring series. why bag on anyone.
but … would be awesome to have more racing in sept/october. its nice and warm!

also, i ask: have they ever had a different finish line in PP? like top of hill at the light? maybe something for fancy title sponsor Cadence to consider. once or twice, could be fun.

take it away JFT!!

Anonymous

commenting on Milano-San Remo, he spies Slipstream’s Will F. in the break stretching his quads by folding his foot under him on the saddle and proclaims, “Oh, poor Will has a cramp in his leg!”

Anonymous

Yeah, try putting the finish at the top of the hill, people can’t stay out of the joggers lane when theres a shit ton of space, theres no room up there.

There have been other finishes. all of them in the bottom of the park between the greek temple and current location.

Anonymous

I agree its very funny the guys who are worried right now. Even if it takes until June, there are like 10 races a week then, as opposed to one a week now.

I don’t think anyone is downplaying the spring series. A whole bunch of people I know try to win the overall as a season goal.

I would say in terms of being a local superstar, there is the CRCA time trial, Bear Mtn, and maybe Mengoni/ Maltese, then the Spring Series is right up there in terms of how people think your season went.

Some people around here think the Spring Series is more important than Sommerville or Altoona. I didn’t say I agree with that.

Anonymous

Morras had some re-occuring medical ailment. Even if he didn’t, he did more in the spring than most do all season.

Anonymous

the knee problem came later on after he disappeared. He didn’t do THAT much, the problem is most guys around here totally suck. So what you say is true, so a certain extent.

Anonymous

it’s just our level of suck. No one is going to compare to the pros, the Hincapie’s when they were around. so, whether p,1,2,3,4,or5, we get to compete and enjoy our hobby. Some even dream big, but it is still just dreams. The best guys around still suck when compared to the pros, and most pros suck compared to the 20 top guys.

Anonymous

You know what would be awesome?

NY Velocity presents: Positive Wednesdays!

No sh-t talk, just nice things to say about everyone!!

Signed, Pollyanna

Anonymous

if everyone sucks, which I assume includes the poster, why bother following the sport locally? Wilson sucks? Rashad? Roger? OK, so we all suck. I think with few exceptions guys are just happy doing what they’re doing. It’s a good sport and competing is fun. Where’s the harm in that?

Anonymous

the guys who are in great shape, if they suffer from burnout, it won’t be until late august/september. or maybe they’ll take a little hiatus in june. whatever. better than being out of shape like most of us.

Anonymous

some guys like winter training, and actually enjoy racing the bike, anytime, any place. crazy world ain’t it

Anonymous

Every race means something. No race is meaningless. Why is it so much better to be in better form in june than march? If you win somerville but get dropped every race in march that doesnt make you good. it just means you dont do enough winter training. The people that are good in march just have a more competitive spirt than the people who want to peak in june and don’t want to burn out.

Andy

I’ve tried a kum-ba-yah thread, and it was crickets city. But I’ll try again.

Rashad is awesome. It seemed like he was going to be mr. sprinter, but he can TT and get in breaks.

Wilson can still beat most of us on a mountain bike.

We need more Will O’Donnell helmet cam action.

Francisco, get well soon. I’d offer my broken collarbone recuperation tips, but I’m sure everyone’s had 2 or 3 already and don’t need my advice.

Is that enough schmalz? Ironically, schmalz is: “1. Informal. exaggerated sentimentalism, as in music or soap operas.”

Ray Alba

Miguel had knee issues going into the season last year and won a number of races including the overall series and he would have probably won FBF too. Also, if he didn’t get an EB1 when literally the entire break at Bear crossed the yellow line, he would have gotten a 4th place finish. So talk what you know. You want the facts, just ask him or me. Otherwise quite making up rumors.

Thanks!

Anonymous

IMIST. which one are you? Armstrong, Bettini, Cancellara are the only good cyclists. Or, everyone deserves some credit for putting in the effort, even the guys getting lapped…I think today’s race actually went very well, an apparent suicide break nearly makes it, a late bridge goes with the obvious suspects, and more than half the field didn’t know cause they were already suffering some snot! I only wish I was fitter, read the race better, but after all is done, I would count this as the best Spring Series race thus far and look forward to more. The only thing more feel good would be a podium girl from -ock -ucking Rock Racing!

Anonymous

Will NYBRA control race promoters?
Say van Dunk is an arrogant jerk. He doesn’t post results or standings after a month of racing. Fine him or something?

Anonymous

any interactions I have had with Van Dunk have been very positive. He seems like a really nice guy, and puts on a lot of events. That being said, his follow through sucks and I am as frustrated as anyone when the results aren’t up – and yes I am in them. Arrogant – no, but could follow through better.

LDVD

That’s becasue, when you interacted with AVD he was ignoring you. Nothing you said will stick.

He does the least minimum, so that he can charge and keep the money for the race.

So he announces dates late, barely updates the site, doesn’t answer emails, and will never post results.

Of the races in NYC, his are the least organized.

Anonymous

The sring series races have been pretty well run this year. Sometimes it takes a little too long to collect any winnings or confirm places but this seems to be the case everywhere. At the first race of the season I actually received an envelope with $100 cash I won from the overall points last year and wasn’t at the last race to collect so it doesn’t seem to me like he’s in it just for the money.

Anonymous

September is much better race weather and rumor has it that there will be 2 new road races in the Catskills. Dieter is putting on a race Sept 7 and another group on Sept 21. Fall Bear will probably be a different course with a 2 mile climb to the finish.

Anonymous

September would be better than March, except this is what we’re conditioned for, and “champing” to get out there. Van Dunk might be the least organized of all events, but at least he has them. As I said before, I will continue to reward his bad behaviour with my $ cause I am happy to race – and to try my hardest in the “training race” and not make excuses like I am waiting to peak for the July 23rd CRCA B race cause somehow that is more important.

Anonymous

i was the orig poster about PP just being a training race. that said, i didn’t mean people are just sitting in. i kept taking weak digs off the front just to get some higher end work in. didn’t really care if it made tactical sense or not. that’s just me, i’m sure others take it more seriously.

Anonymous

Would have been nice to have a few more echelons going top and bottom of PP. Headwind made the climb a bit tougher, but the strongest riders still went up the road…not me. FBF should be better for that, maybe?

Anonymous

you “training” in? If it was the p/1/2/3, you might have been better off going with Will O’Donnell – great training off the front, and you coulda stayed away with 2 guys working together. Or, at least, went with the bridge – that would have been great training as well. IF you were in the 3/4, there was some great training in the original 4 man break as well as the bridge group, also probably some good training when the break split w/ 2 laps to go whether you were in the front or chasing. What exactly were you training/practicing for? How to be pack fill for the summer races?

Anonymous

training race, or not, everyone races every single race like it’t the most important race of the year. if they say different, they’re lying. and, 99% of uscf licenses belong to pack fill. that’s just the way it is. accept your fate.

Anonymous

I’ve been on my bike twice since the CRCA party.

I’m off the pack fill.

Drinking and gambling are my new hobbies. Only downside is my wife now talks to me.
