Hangover 9/17/2007

Section head text.

There were basically two races over the weekend: The Calvert Toefield and the Silvermine TT.

James Joseph proved to anyone foolhardy enough to take him to the line that he will win the sprint.

There’s lots of results from Silvermine, with Roger Aspholm winning the 123 race, and with Empire’s team of Margarite, Zmolik and Loehner beating the two Westwood teams.

David Linenberg had the fastest time of the day in winning the 35+. Who’s Dave Linenberg you say? Well, Dave got 8th at the Sandy Hook TT in April. In the 4’s. That’s some fast improving!!

Anne Marie Miller 2nd woman, Roger Friedman wins 45+, Craig Goodstein wins 4/5’s with Kyle Peppo 2nd.

It was also a big weekend for eastern Iowa. Iowa City boy Jason McCartney won stage 14 of the Vuelta, but alas, the Hawkeyes lost to Iowa State. I would just like to say congratulations to the Iowa State fans, but if you are an Iowa State fan, there’s no way you just read and understood that last sentence, so for those Iowa State fans I will just say “Go, spot, go.”

JJ 50 and he still shows everyone how it’s done. I spoke to Bob Kaplan from WV yesterday and to see this 64 year old still enjoying success and still beating young guys in TT’s is amazing. he has kids that are in the 40+ category (not that they race) and he is still winning. While we are at it we might want to interview Bob as well.

from a crashed up field sprint involving a contingent of Rite Aid boys. That race was mad, bad, and dangerous to ride. Highly recommended to hardcore crit fiends.

Turk

Sprint king a cat 3? yeah right. Cat 3 racing doesn’t even count as racing. It’s just practice until you upgrade and do the real race. I don’t think they should even have lower cat racing. If you can’t cut it in the open race.. you shouldn’t even be racing.

“very strong cat 4 field = oxymoron”

No, very strong cat 4 field means strong for a cat 4 field, not strong in an absolute sense.

It’s like someone you the coffee is hot. So you scoff because the surface of the sun is hotter?

Please proof-read your entries. There is a distinct lack of clarity in your past post.

Strong cat 4 field is always strong in a relative sense, not an absolute sense.

sorry but Mr turk is very busy at the moment.
he has no time to read what pathetic amateur racers have to say. he’s currently doing laps in prospect park in preparation for the tour next year.
and he’s doing them really fast.

Ever heard of Google?

Gresham’s law is commonly stated as: “When there is a legal tender currency, bad money drives good money out of circulation”. or more accurately “Money overvalued by the State will drive money undervalued by the State out of circulation.”

his wins are all at lessor quality races. Put him in the big Crits and RRs and I doubt he would do as well. Did not see him at Naugatuck, Harford, Thater, Sturbridge or any higher quality out of town races. He is a very strong sprinter but I would take many other sprinters (Cat 3 over him). With that said I hope to be half as strong as him when I am 50.

Bob Loblaw is really funny. He wants to know who is the best among the worst. Cute. You guys love to slap yourselves on the back, dontcha? You going to give yourselves little medals too? At a tea party maybe?

Anonymous

I think Zaverdas had a better season than James Joseph. That said, the guy who said he’d take many 3s over James is an idiot. He regularly beats all the 3s. Still to proclaim him the best sprinter is silly since he doesn’t go up against the 1s and 2s on a regular basis.

Anonymous

you’re an idiot. that’s what AMATEUR bike racing is all about. racing with people that are in your skill level

Anonymous

I’m ok with amateurs giving each other praise for being the best amateurs. I just think its funny that you NYC guys are giving each other praise for being best of the worst.

Anonymous

besides FBF, he has maybe 2 wins this year in cat 3 races on the road? for local gusy i think one of the sketches guys gets my nod – ben or arjan.

EA

I love how in a country in which millions of people take fantasy sports seriously people still give each other crap about taking lower category bike racing seriously.

The Linenberg time is suspect. He didn’t pass some guys that started in front of him yet his time is faster than the theirs by more than the original gap.

I’d love to see Bullwinkle’s results…just link us to the writeups on cyclingnews, please, since I’m sure you’ve got at least a couple of pro wins this season, no? I mean, that’s what matters, ain’t it?

You’re probably just bitter ’cause you lost out on a contract

I wanted to quickly address Dave Linenberg’s results. Someone asked me to review Dave’s results post race. One particular rider said “noone passed me”. I checked not only the officials manual start and finish times, as well as the electronic times. they were within 1 second of one another. Further, he also shares with me his power data, and that two was within seconds of his recorded time. sometimes the SRM takes a second or two to kick on.

I’ve raced with dave throughout the year. each and every race he gets faster and stronger. he and i spent time at MIT and if you got to know him, followed his thread on our site, you’d learn he is beyond obsessive with being as aero as can be. while not relevant, he is probably the most lean, fit guy you will ever meet other than roger aspholm. he is the same build and shape as roger. dave and i spent tremendous time researching, speaking to every professional we could about CRR, rolling resistance, aero equipment. we spent the time and money to head to MIT, etc.

he took 5th at Nationals, he smoked the NJITT, and he won outright, beating everyone, including gisler and myself in fine form, at Kingwood.

trust me , i have seen him grow for over a year and its really tough to digest someone beating roger. its rarity.
and i too find it hard to swallow since i know how hard i was going. but the dude is for real, i checked his manual times at your request, i checked the electronic times, and his srm. they all checked out.
the dude is crazy fast.
read his thread at http://www.westwoodvelo and you will see nuts at its finest. certifiable.

the dude trains only like 7 hours a week due to work load. doesnt road race, just tt’s. warmsup does an hour at FT, cools down. like 3 time week.
if that doesnt boggle the mind, i dont know what does.
i dont like losing to incorrect results. if he didnt win, another wv wins so no reason not to make sure its perfect. his times were as posted.

maybe the winter will slow him down

Satisfied? Go get that Best of the Worst medal made up for the region’s fastest 35+ Cat 4. That’s L-I-N-E-N-B-E-R-G

Arjan (PP results) or Rashad (upgraded to 2 but was mostly a 3) – many wins and an upgrade. JJ only wins FBF and the random PP race where the 1s and 2s are not present. Arjan and Rashad do well against the 1s and 2s day in and day out. Besides them, Marcinko (always top 5 what ever the race) of CCC is a beast and also just upgraded to Cat 2. With that said you gotta respect your elders.

ts

This guy is really good. And he is only going to get faster with more tt experience. Interesting way to train. I figure he would burn out with that much intensity. But it seems to be working for him. Does he have a background in other sports?

So angry. All of yous. Relax. Win races and stop your whining. I’m not bitter at all. I just can’t believe how much whining gets posted on this site from cat 3 and 4 crybabies. Its crazy. You all don’t even recognize it anymore. You’ve been blinded by the light, wrapped up like a duece, another runner in the night.

Anonymous

Awwwwww…so you just feel the pain of others more intensely than most, don’t you?

So what about those results? Show us the way, O professional one!

I think Dave was a top swimmer in college. we hung together on the way to Nationals. sometimes i think, well, i know i’m a bit nutty about stuff too (arent we all, heck we’re posting on here)…but dudes, he takes the cake hands down.

if you go to the westwoodvelo site and look for the Need for Speed thread, he had some amazing posts on Crr and other stuff. but the definition of insanity was that he took the Power spreadsheet from analyticalcycling and rebuilt it so you could punch in all kinds of data and get CDA numbers and estimate your times. he says his Kingwood time he estimated within seconds of actual, “that one was easy, it was flat”. dude….he REBUILT a crazy insane complex spreadsheet.

that thread FYI, is prett good. he/I/we talk about the mMIT visit, cahnges there, helmets, booties, skinsuits, glass/noglasses, etc.

Helmet cavities – and just an aside. i was looking at some of the photos and it seems the LG helmets, or the Giro Adv helmets are popular. both tested, fo rme, very well. its individual, i went ultimately with teh UVEX FP2…but for everyone with the Giro and LG helmet, you really should tape up that cavity on the undersidde o the helmet behind where the head-straps are. some helmets like the Spiuk, uvex are solid piecs in the back where the tail/tip is located. the LG and Giro are open and so air cavitates in there. we tested both with and without tape, and frankly there was a big difference once taped up.
infact, there were actually no position changes they mdae to my stuff at MIT, the biggest thing i gained was helmet, about 1/4 lb of drag, and then taping that up when another 1/4 or so.
simple tape: 30cents of it. and cover the vent holes, they provide NO air cooling at all. for show. ‘race look’. slows it down. tape them up.

as i said, that dude is about 100x more geeked out than me.

Graham Obree used to train just like that (in between bouts of binge drinking). Seemed to work for him (the training, that is).

Moose are big and smelly. They produce lots of methane, which is apparently a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon. So it’s funny that this Bullwinkle character chooses a big, smelly, environmentally damaging animal as his moniker. They are also slower than other forest animals. I bet he chose the moose for a reason.

Anonymous

Anyone do research on what bikes are the most damaging to our environment?

Carbon process vs. Titanium vs. Steel vs. Alum. Would be nice to know before you buy your next bike.

It’s trade time. Who has dirt? I saw Motor riding on 9w this morning with a couple of Bandits. Is there a story there?

While I would bet there are dopers on the list.

The less the pro dope, the more we’ll unexpected riders show up.

that and the break was allowed to go because no one was a threat.

Mimo Larsen

Christophe Jammet the clear winner. Everyone else was a bunch finish about 2 minutes back.

Inquiring minds want to know:
Where did the chubby kid get cross skillz like that?!?

I can’t believe that you roadies sit there and make fun of triathletes and then drive all the way to Harriman to pretend your triathletes for the day. You have fancier equipment than I saw last week at the duathalon in Central park. To the 300 of you who didn’t podium, welcome to the fun world of trying to set a PR. I hope it was as rewarding to you as it is to us Tri’s.

Anonymous

I’m sorry, are you saying triathlons predate time trials? Like we borrowed the time trial event from Triatheltes? ME thinks you should get your facts straight.

Tri-Hate

To Tri-Guy. A former roadie finished 2nd in your almightly CP Duathlon. Do you know the Whalens? They win local duathlons ALL THE TIME. Guess what?
Former Roadies and they’re in their mid 40’s.
Go shave your armpits, you’ll look more like a girl and swim faster.
