Hangover 8/20/2007

Section head text.

After a ride on Friday’s Hopeful thread that went from “discussions” of women’s racing (remarkably clueless) to diatribes on hand numbing (poisonously boring); we’re hoping to have a rational discourse about the preceding weekend’s racing. Or at least make fun of tri-guys – where have the web gems like “mankini” gone?

Any-hoo, at Prospect a break of 5 got away early and held off the field. Arjan Planting of NYSketches won with Jermaine Burrowes second, Rashad Guerra was third.

In the New York State Time Trial, Eugene reports that Dan Zmolik was third with Tony Settel 7th overall – winning the 45+.

No idea what happened at HIlltowns, Keith Berger or Burlington, so if you won any of those race, please contact us.

And Ashley Tisdale totally carried HSM2, Zac Efron was barely keeping up!

Popular Comedy Central rider Karen Ulrich and renowned cycling coach Carlos Restrepo were wed in a beautiful ceremony at the Waterfront Museum on the Brooklyn waterfront Saturday night. While there were no official results to speak of, there were plenty of hangovers on Sunday rides for her teammates and cycling friends. We wish them years of happiness both on and off the bike together.

Was postponed on Saturday with winds gusting to 88mph and temps in the low 20s. Then was canceled Sunday as conditions worsened.

Chris C

Aaron Wolfe got second in the 3/4 race. Took off with another guy with about 14 miles to go…uphill…with a stiff headwind and stuck it. Great job.

“No idea what happened at HIlltowns, Keith Berger or Burlington, so if you won any of those race, please contact us.”

It would be so easy to do a little bit of work to make this site worth visitng. There were plenty of CRCA riders at Hilltowns and Berger, even teammates of yours. By Sunday night the downed powerlines at Hilltowns and the great racing at Keith Berger were old news. Get someone who actually races to moderate this page. Asking everyone to contribute is fine, but at least start from an somewhat educated point rather than always leading off with “there was racing, anyone know what happened”

schmalz

To not record every f-in category result in New England with pictures included. Your refund is on the way, I suggest you purchase a clue with the money.

was that irony?

“It would be so easy to do a little bit of work to make this site worth visitng.”

right. it’s not worth visiting. it’s just worth visiting and anonymously complaining about how easy it would be to make it better. at least you titled your post correctly.

Looking at the Downers Grove results when10th place momentarily caught my eye.

So worth it

It’s worth visiting the site to bash ‘Lame’. Lame – get the gerbils out of your ass, they are starting to make you irritable.

Anonymous

One of the best run and most fun Crits of the season. I sucked in the race but had a great time and good training regardless. Nice to see some of the NYC/WC teams up at the race.

Assman

Don’t degrade gerbilers by accusing “Lame” of being irritable because he partakes. I am sure “Lame” is irritable and annoying without the help of Gerbils tickling his prostate.

jft

First the commentary: if you’re going to diss and go all negative, at least be man enough to sign your own name.

Next the apology: I’d doubted the complaints about James Josepsh posted on this site, but this weekend was in a race with that guy for the first time in a while. He has a lot of speed but rides like such a dumbass with all that swerving. Sorry to have doubted the complainers. I’m not sure if it’s dangerous but don’t understand what the point of it is unless it’s to scare other riders. And doing stuff explicitly to scare other riders eary in a race is pretty lame.

What a loser. Amazing how a guy that wins so much can be such a loser.

Alan Atwood

….are a little off due to the aforementioned power line problems. The first couple of groups of 4/5 U35’s got through the road before it was closed; the rest of them had to stop and wait. Before I was able to get there the entire 4/5 35+ field and the Masters 50+ had to stop and wait. Luckily there was a quick and dirty (literally) detour which I had the entire group do and then reassembled them and restarted them with breaks intact.

Anonymous

please don’t jft hate here. pls respect your elders, especially those who back up opinions with names.

Great course lay out, but probably the crappiest surface I have ever raced on…pot holes, cracks, bumps…just all over. Many many flats in every race. Also very poorly organzied in terms of clearing the stree. The first race started 45 min late. I don’t think I am going back next year…

Anonymous

sounds like the opposite of Keith Berger – perfect roads, support and good pack size. Plus the primes were sweet.

Eugene

Among the many things i like and appreciate about the guys who run this site is their aversion to excessive work.

You know the expression, “Why stand when you can sit…”? These guys are kings, and my head is bowed in reverence to their superiority.

Anonymous

enough already from the anonymous keith berger promoter. the race is over, dude, you can stop talking about your awesome primes.

Anonymous

If you think nyvelocity should serve as a clearinghouse for local results, to be a local version of cyclingnews, Lame might have a point. But that’s not what it is. As even Eugene doesn’t mind his team not getting recognition for podium finishes in NRC races, it doesn’t really matter what is reported on this site or not. Look at the nice pics and have fun. Lame’s taking this stuff way too seriously.

Anonymous

If Schmalz or whoever is now expected to spend even 30 minutes each Monday morning looking around the internet for results we’re done.

The sense of entitlement by people like Lame is shocking.

That said, where are pictures of ME!

Jeff King

Eugene:

Great job at nats. Can you please post a short report? That rain in the photos looked really dangerous. I think the guys that crashed made the mistake of holding onto their bikes and not eachother “Ugli Style”.

Alex Ostroy

I think the site can be a clearing house for all local results with pictures for all and anything else the community wants to make it.

Don’t just sit back and expect others to do it for you, its not the 6 o’clock news. Wake up, it’s 2007 and this is a community site- that means the community is responsible for the content. Does the editor of facebook or myspace.com write all the content? I guess bike racers are too old to get it, certainly the CRCA juniors are great at giving the site stories, blogs, and pics. Dan and the rest the editors are just that editors who try to bring you the good stuff and take out the inappropriate stuff. Dan is also an exceedingly good community member because he also bothers to write and report on things going on, he doesn’t have to and no one pays him to do it.

Anonymous

where are the results?

where are the photos?

when does bear reg start?

why doesn’t someone run a crit around rockerfeller center?

why won’t my lunch get here?

Anonymous

Not that it’s ever going to happen but “what if” your dream of going national ever happens and you really become VelocityNation, how many shares do I get? It’s a “community” site, right?

Anonymous

doesn’t the “close” button work on the enlarged picture page? It fools me everytime. Dam you “close” button.

Eugene

It was pouring rain, and guys were sliding out all over the course. We were all single file for the last 10 laps, and when guys would crash, the gap would create a panic for those behind. Since I wasn’t in the front 15, I spent those final laps in the “panic” section, where our race was constantly contracting, and we had to ride faster than the front 15 on the straightaways. And if that wasn’t bad enough, riders would suddenly decide they’d had enough, and pull off, leaving a gap. So I was never at the winning end of the race, but was always catching up. But it was great fun! I really enjoyed it.

Adam Weist

Alex, Dan and Andy have given this community a voice and a platform. Guys who have moved away, like me, get a big kick out of following the scene because of the site, new riders can learn a lot about the local scene on the site and local racers have some strange small renown all over the world because people are curious about NYC cycling everywhere.

Why do people think by asking them to contribute instead of complain they are trying to rip them off in some way? Personally I hope theses guys do one day get rich on there creation- why begrudge them for it?

Lattanzi

..*especially* the dirt road after the main climb. No sarcasm, I’m serious. That was way fun. Thanks to promoters and Alan for a great day and keeping it safe when it might have been otherwise.

Stranger

His last comment was at 10:20 and yet I still feel the urge to bash him. Lame – I wouldn’t have my way with you, EVEN if you were a numb hand.

Anonymous

had primes of $5 off at a local hot dog place and 50% off a helmet at local bike shop. otherwise it’s a nice course with a fairly steep hill, but it’s more a circuit and less a crit.

Paul Carbonara

I second that this guy’s riding style is lame. I have enough problems without being knocked off my bike by some knuckledhead swerving all over the road.

Anonymous

funny, i’ve been yelled at by j.j. on fast, impromptu, single-file pacelines in p.p. for “not keeping it straight.” in fact, everytime i was signaling an incoming skater, runner, etc. and making room gently. perhaps in his old age wisdom he regards running into others at 25 m.p.h. on any given wednesday at 6 p.m. the thing to do. i thought he just couldn’t stand a non-racer matching his pace (i did race as a junior in south america). his wheel sure is no safe place to be, erratically accelerating, slowing down, grinding a 53-11 in a 22 mph group, or spinning on 39-23 in a 25 mph line.

many swear that he is a good guy. i wouldn’t be so sure. but fast he sure is. there may be some entitlement (fading former olympian, king of the 4s at FB, whatever). who knows? the jury is out.

jft

He’s fast.

He was swooping in and out of the pack on Satuday, so I called him a dumbass. We had a heated exchange of views. Actually with a lot of agreement, except he didn’t think he’s a dumbass and I did.

But where it got really interesting was when he leaned on me intentionally. That’s lame. He wants to scare me into shutting up? In a park with dozens of people around. Yeah, that’s a good move.

And then he’s following me around staring at me trying to freak me out or something. FYI if someone wants to shut me up, ignoring me is the best thing.

What a loser.

Pretty fast. But a loser.

Anonymous

James Joseph would beat the shit out of this JFT guy…”FYI” don’t call him a loser dumbass online do that before or after the race

Eugene

From what JFT wrote, he said what was on his mind to JJ’s face. And he also commented about it online without hiding behind annonimity. I believe he’s “manning up” more than most, including you.

Anonymous

act tough. Just ride your bike, have fun and if some bonehead rides dangerously avoid him. Now give me more cowbell!

Anonymous

even if you have a point the carrying on in the pack is simply disharmonious. A total drag. The break was gone. The race was over. If anything WW should have been trying to pull it back for Tony. You’re a good guy but Saturday morning diatribes are totally unnecessary. File a protest. Carrying on days later is just childish.

jft

Deno’s rode a very good race till the last four guys bridged to the break, but after that we couldn’t control it and the numbers up front weren’t so good for use. It would have been good if we’d gotten one more guy in the break. But we didn’t have the juice to chase down that group, especially considering two of our three strongest guys were in the break already.

Yeah, maybe I should’ve protested JJ. But I wasn’t mad at him for anything to do with the results of the race or the way the race was developing.

And since we have to race against him again, it’s not childish to talk about it more.

So how about this: if you think that JJ’s an idiot, then tell him. Tell him before the race you don’t like the way he rides. Or during. Or afterwards. Anytime.

Thanks,

jft

Deno’s rode a good race till the last four guys bridged to the break, but after that we couldn’t control it and the numbers up front weren’t so good for us. OK but not great.

I sorta hear you saying I shouldn’t rag on the guy during the race and I shouldn’t rag on him away from the race — only do it right afterwards. That doesn’t make sense to me.

So how about this: if you think that JJ’s an idiot, then tell him. Tell him before the race you don’t like the way he rides. Or during. Or afterwards. Whenever you like.

Thanks,

Anonymous

psych.
They should make it day-of reg only. that way all the assholes who pre reg and dont show up wont prevent others from racing.

all you losers shouldnt even bother doing it, you’ll just chalk it up to another “training ride”.

K King

Near the end of the Floyd series in 06 I complained to Charlie about the way JJ was cutting through the pack trying to stay on Wilkins’ wheel. I also talked to JJ after the race and he said it was just racing.

My problem with it was that most guys in the 3/4 field aren’t as confident handling a bike as JJ and his borderline moves put everyone in danger of getting put on the deck.

Not that its right but he isn’t the only guy around here that would lean on you if you called him a dumbass during the a race.

kwk

i remember sprinting against JJ about 12 years ago in the threes. he was very hard to beat then too. he should have been subject to a mandatory upgrade back then. it is amazing he is still doing it at his age.

Brian G.

the PP cat 4. race on Saturday was a lot of fun. This is my second full year as a cat 4. and it’s fun racing against guys that you see week in and week out. How lucky are we that we can race on Tuesday (Floyd), Thursday (Rockleigh) and somewhere on the weekends if we so choose? Sorry for being happy..flame away…

Anonymous

Agree with Brian G. Being able to race pretty much anytime locally is a luxury that does not exist in many places I’ve lived. Yeah, Sat PP 4 was fun with a decent sized, but not huge field, and lots of action off the front.

All for being forthright.

Clearly, you don’t know “this JFT guy” or you wouldn’t proclaim your ignorance this way. Like him/agree with him or not, he’s straight with people and, again, doesn’t hide behind anonymity. (Like I am so as not to appear the kissass.) Credit where it’s due; not enough what-you-see-is-what-you-get people around anymore.

Anonymous

There used to be some insane guys racing around here. I remember Jerry Malone of Toga leaning on a guy and riding him straight into the curb at Prospect for saying something during a race.

overcaffeinated

that’s right on. bike racing in nyc has become far too gentrified. time to bring back the marauding gangs from the 70s but this time around in tight brightly colored underwear.

Anonymous

AA said Bear reg would be up this week. The race is on just not the reg. Will probobly open when I am out of town with no internet.

jft

registration will open 12:01am, Friday (seriously)

I don’t know the link but it will be at bikereg and I’ll have a link on the CRCA website as soon as it’s available.

Anonymous

Thats makes sense. Have the reg open when most working people are sleeping. Now most Cat 3s and 4s will have to stay up all night to get in the race. Can you say ass backwards?

Anonymous

Will someone stick their head out of the politboro meeting and give some info that makes sense. Even JT thinks this is whacked.

hahaha

Overall that team deserves major props for their riding and their sportsmanship this year. Like helping Charlie I patch up Floyd Bennett Field, the good results from a mix of different riders, etc etc

Kremlin

Only certain CAT4’s personally selected by the Chief of Police will be allowed to register for Bear Mtn. All others will be sent to race at the Tour of Novosibirsk. Complainers will be sent to the gulag to stamp low-grade chain rings.

Anonymous

compare Charlie I’s open discussion of FBF issues with CRCA’s closed mouth handling of everything.

Party Member # 32774

You had better close your mouth or you may find yourself stamping chain rings with the rest of the complainers.

KH

The secret crca email addresses to which we never respond are carefully hidden amidst the thousands of pages on crca.net, where you can also find the secret minutes to our secret meetings.

Why is Bear opening at midnight: because racers complained that they got locked out of the Mengoni when it opened at noon.

jft

I’ve seen the amount of work Tony, Ken and other CRCA leaders put into running races, and am thankful for it.

But if the decision about something involves no extra effort on the club’s part I think they should consider trying to respond to “complaints” requests. 7am or 7pm or 8am or 8pm seem responsive and doesn’t take more effort. Midnight seems a little spiteful.

Also, opening registration ealier in the year or at least letting participants know earlier when it would open, would save them the trouble of checking this site an bikereg and crca.net repeatedly.

Lastly, I’ve gotten emails from a few people from out of town asking if the race is happening. It’s not normal for registration to open so late, so regardless of the reality, doubts will arise. That might affect turnout in some fields. People go to bikereg and see four other races that date and nothing from CRCA and they make their choice.

Numby

I think the CRCA should cancel the Mens CAT4 field – I don’t think you could recruit a bigger bunch of whining pussies anywhere. You are all pathetic. I can’t imagine the hardship that you are all being subjected to, not being able to register at least 3 months in advance in order to prepare yourself mentally for a PR?

These are fun races that people volunteer their time to organize and put on for you. Get a grip.

Anonymous

they don’t complain. The CAT4 men are the riders that have been going nuts. they manically fill the registration in 2 minutes and then don’t show up en mass. Maybe if they raced as fast and agressively as they filled out fields they might all be CAT1’s.

Anonymous

I think a few rotten 4’s are giving a bad name to the rest of them, but the complaining is getting tiresome.

sleepy

I’m getting tired of the complaints. And since I’m complaining about the complaints, I’m tiring myself.

JG

Who cares when registration opens. I would wait on a line of 120 Cat 4 racers at 8am the day of the race to be able to participate in such a fun and challenging event. Stop complaining and be happy we have such a top race twice a year in our backyard. Many travel hours for this race and we have it in our back yard.

Anonymous

Cat4 haters have it wrong. Mainly the 1/2 race will be impacted. Also the top out of town masters we see in the spring might pass. There is 0 impact on Cat4 which is a local mainly CRCA event.

Anonymous

What a bunch of pussies – please cancel the Cat 4 race. Tony S. you guys rock – keep up the good work and don’t let these 12 year old idiots get to you. Open the registration at 3:00 am that way only adults will register for the race.

Aaron

Maybe this should be handled more like a popular marathon. Let all the 4s who want to race sign up for a lottery that will decide who gets to register. Get someone impartial to “certify” the drawing. Charge $5 or something to sign up. Or figure out how to have 2 4 fields.

Anonymous

Most likely 1 or 2 guys with nothing to do. Most of us are fine with registering when ever as long as we can race. Dont group us all together. Plus some of us will be punishing the 3s shortly.

Anonymous

Was that little dust up we had here yesterday the offical announcment that registration will open on Friday morning at 12:01? Nothing further has been announced and nothing is posted on bikereg.
