Hangover 8/17/2009

Section head text.

This past weekend was an opportunity for championships to be given out like clusters of plump grapes – prompting some to spitefully stomp out a vintage of covetous displeasure, which is a reaction that is both sad and as predictable as a rain on a Tuesday this year. And an action which elicits a momentary shrug of the champion’s shoulder before they rest their head on a golden pillow – they do still give out golden pillows for wins in bike races don’t they? But let’s recap what happened, shall we?

Firstly, there’s Mike Margarite of Empire’s great 3rd place ride at Elite Men’s National Criterium Championship.

Then we move on to the NY Capital Region Road Race and 2009 New York State Championship, which saw David Taylor of Blue Ribbon-Translations.com win the master’s 35-44 championship just ahead of Robert Lattanzi of Westwood Velo; Troy Kimball of West wood won the master’s 45-54 championship; and Brett Cleaver of Sommerville Sports won the cat 3 championship. Full results are here.

At the New York State Time Trial Championships, Greg Olsen of Adler won the masters 40-44 title; Scot Willingham of Sanchez/Houlihan-Lokey won the masters 45-49 title; and Benjamin Lesnak of NY Sketches won the cat 4 title. Full results are here.

At the CRCA club race, Lisban Quintero of Foundation won from a breakaway with Ken Harris of Adler; Zak Abdullah of FGX Racing won the B race; and Beth Renuad of Comedy Central won the women’s race. Results are here.

As of this writing, there’s no results for the Blistered Butt Road Race or the other races posted, so if you won or know who won, please let us know.

Empire is getting Cervelo some nice Regional Exposure. They need to pony up and get these guys some new rides. Soloist from 07 must be getting abused…

Bastien Biopace

Doug O’Neil wins the 45 plus overall GC, taking 2nd in the TT, winning the Crit and taking 7th in the road race.

Gaetan Hammer

I am not sure why guys rag on him. He loves the sport and does his best to help out new riders. He is a bit of a know it all but he means well. I suspect its the same guy posting the WILL S hate each time (Sentanta rider?)

Luca Rubber Hood

Totally. Him beating David Wiens, a super strong 44 year old MTB local masters racer is kind of like him beating David Taylor … no disrespect.

Local Reporter

CRCA actually went 1-2 in the opening stage of 45+, with David Carr of Setanta taking first, barely beating Doug O’Neill.

Kristin Lotito of Metro got 2nd in the Women’s 4 GC to add another great result to her strong season.

Ray Alba

It is hard to think that this guy was just a 3 a couple of years ago – and now he is 3rd in Elite USA Crits. Great work and a great guy.

Congrats to you. I only wish I could be as talented!

Best,

Ray Alba

Paolo Crank

had two guys in top ten and three in top 15. I think that’s a pretty good job. But they don’t win in the park, so they are not the best team in the city according to out local logic. Yet the celebrated guys are not even trying to race out of the city

why?

Why didn’t Lisban race the Elite Crit Champs? It seems like he would have a very good shot at that. He’s on a different talent level than anyone else in the park. He’s a good guy and I think we’d all be happy to see him succeed at a higher level.

Le' Vi Leip Bottle

yup, great teams don’t race central park. They are all scared of the well known NYC doping controls.

Chad Feldheimer

ok, let me get this straight–

lisban left empire to join a team that was supposedly paying for park race wins

now lisban can’t afford to travel to races with real cat 1 riders?

DOES NOT COMPUTE, but thanks for trying to explain the phenomenon of lisban not racing out of town.

why?

I think the point is that he’s stuck in the park for some reason, instead of racing big out of town races.

He’s one of the most talented in NYC, if not the most.

Paolo Crank

and get your ass kicked outside of the park if you can beat Ken in super easy sprint and get payed by foundation. Simple math!

Jens Cage

Not that I am a Lance fan but give Wiens his props:
Wiens was a former national champ and regularily did damage on the World Cup circuit in the 90’s- he also owns those trails (lives in Gunnison)and gets paid (not much…) to do well there. And for the last 8 years pros who race the true endurance races (best in breed) have come to dethrone him and have done NOTHING.

Endurance mountain biking is hard and a different animal than road racing- ask the CRCA locals who came out to the DH40 this weekend who got their asses handed to them by a bunch of mountain bikers.

Beating Wiens is hard. Floyd did not do it and Lance did it this year only after getting a bunch of honches to sign up and kill it while he sat in….not to mention he is a DOPER.

And finally: congrats to Mike M! A super nice guy and it is great to see a result like that.

karlwithak

When a team signs me, they understand they are getting a rider that can help do leadouts — just ask any sprinter I’ve ever ridden with. I can help win a team time trial. I can go top 10 in a time trial when I am going well. I can ride with the best climbers in the world. I can save races tactically. So whoever hires me, instead of having one of their best guys still there at the end of a race, they will have two of their best guys in the final. And not only do you strengthen your team by hiring me, you weaken the other teams I don’t go to.”

The best part? He’s not full of himself, he’s not exaggerating, he’s telling the truth. I appreciate that. If there’s one guy I would love to interview more than any other in the pro peloton (ok, save for Lance), it’s Chris Horner

Will S to Jim

Well If I must go the record for inquiring minds…to all my lovers and Anonymous haters.. just kidding. LOL

Yes I will say after coming off a great week of racing and placing 3rd at the NERC, I was stoked about also doing well at the Albany Capital State Champs! After the first lap we had already dropped half the field and I was feeling even better then last week. Then on the seconded lap I noticed the rear wheel going FLAT and new this was going to be bad timing to make a change at the bottom of the 16% climb. At this point the race was ON and in full throttle! I get a fairly fast change, but by the time i got to the top of the hill, I saw nothing but a few cows mooing at me…lol

So 300 miles later and out of a $90.00 tire would be my sappy story of Albany 2009:(…

Congrats to Mike M. on his Podium finish!

Florian Skidmark

what happened to that crit in north jersey with the steep hill. was it in park ridge or something? did it happen and i miss it?

not joking

There is a young spanish speaking gentleman named Stalin Quintero that has been doing very well at some local races. Is there a relation to Lisban besides that they are both Quinteros and both very fast?

NYS Champs

Why were the road race championships and tt championships on the same weekend? And at least if they are going to be set up that way, have the tt be the Sat and the road race be on Sun. 40k tt’s are not fun the day after 3 or 4 hour road races.

Chad Feldheimer

i’m not on usacycling?! that must be some sort of mistake. here is a picture of me with my helmet:

Klutzy Woodlong

Maybe Horner will give an interview if/when he no longer rides for the Lance/Johann axis. But then again, he probably won’t if he wants a job in the industry. I hope he does (shill-free) commentary. Or races until he’s 50.

Maxime Kevlar

Stalin Quiterio is a talented young rider, right now racing at Cayey Tour at Puerto Rico. Not related to Quintero. I think Lisban should go out and compete in better races, Ray sent Euris Vidal to Charlotte and he got 7th place beside a lot of attention from other teams, as well as Jermaine Burrows who also takes chances to proof his conditions in outside races.

Cogelo

can believe people still has some hate for this guy, no matter how hard he works and how many podiums he takes ,Pulla won at PP last weekend and nobody said anything. He still a great rider and ppeople has a lot to learn from him. Still people doing just to go to Gimbles and Nyack Ride…

Lorenzo Tigweld

Re: Stalin

During the Cold War, quite a large number of students from Latin America attended university in the Soviet Union, courtesy of communist “generosity.” Many of those named their children after Soviet heroes (few heroines, it appears) or historical figures. Stalin is one of those names, alas!
Prof. Tigweld

Cogelo

Most of this student were from Cuba, due to the relations between URSS and Castro. Stalin(iron man) became a popular name in the caribeann in the 60’s and 70’s. See stalin Javier.

Nice weather greeted the racers at the 2004 Mengoni Grand Prix, promoted by New York’s Century Road Club Association and supported by long-time cycling patron Fred Mengoni.

The course is just rolling roads through Central Park, and in good weather races typically come down to field sprints. Not this year. In the pro-1-2 race, first-lap attacks by riders including Greg Wolf (Stelvio Teamwear) and Edwin Morel (GS Gothm/Toga) came together into a 21-rider break with powerful teams like Gotham/Toga, Ideal Tile, Navigators and ACT-UPMC all having at least two men in the move. The GS Mengoni team missed the break completely, partially due to disarray following a serious accident of 3-time winner Wilson Vasquez. Others decided against going and didn’t make it either: Germany’s Sonke Thiel (Stevens-Hamburg) said “I was on Van Haesebroucke’s [Navigators] wheel when he went up, but I thought ‘It’s too early’ and let him go.”

Early in the penultimate lap (with about nine miles to go) Gotham/Toga’s Melito “Pulla” Heredia and Ideal Tile’s Bill Elliston got clear of the rest of the break. Elliston described it: “Pulla was going really hard on the downhill leading into the climb at the top of the park. I took a pull and when I moved over, no one else would do anything. So I went after him. He still had a gap on me at the top of the climb, so I yelled, he waited, and that was it — we stayed away. Really he was doing most of the work for the rest of the race. Like a freight train.”

Edwin Morel
Photo ©: Andy Shen
Why the attack? With a smile Heredia said, “I wanted to win. I’ve wanted to win this race for years. It was good to have a teammate in the big break, but I was worried about Joe Papp [America’s Cycling Team-UPMC] and the Navigators.”

A few riders, including last year’s cat 3 winner Rob Lattanzi (CRCA/Next), made it across to the break late in the race, as cooperation broke down and the field came close due to chasing efforts from Mengoni, with individuals from CRCA-Conrad’s, CTS and other teams helping out. Mike Henson of CRCA/VisitBritain was one of the riders trying to keep the break clear, but reported that “The group was too big and not enough guys were working.” Still, most of the break was just ahead of the field at the end. As Mike McGinley of CVC-Pig Iron put it “It was nice not having to deal with a huge mob at the end.” In the break, Uruguayan Alvaro Tardaguila of America’s Cycling Team-UPMC won the sprint for third over Van Haesebroucke.

Catherine Powers

An early move also worked in men’s 3 race, with six riders getting away early. Fourth place Michael Sherry of CRCA-Merrill Lynch-Stelvio described the move: “The break kind of formed in slow motion. VisitBritain’s Ken Harris was last to join to make the juncture but the main reason the gap got comfortable.” Winner Daniel Byrne (CRCA/Sanchez-Metro) was not very confident leading into the finish. “There was a prime sprint earlier and I got a touch of cramp then.” Bernie McGarry and Tom Cipolla of CTS rounded out the podium.

The women’s race was the only one that finished in a field sprint, won by Ashley Kimmet of Colavita-Bolla. Kimmet improved one place over the previous year, as did runner-up Catherine Powers of La Grange. Caryl Gale of CRCA-Aquafina was third. Powers, who began racing in New York City, described the finish as “tricky” adding “I used to have it dialed in but it’s been a long time since I’ve raced in Central Park. I like to go early but got a little bungled up when Betty Tyrell launched even earlier and then faded and pulled off to my side. Still, it’s great to be back in New York!”

Wheelshucker

Yes, but this dude is like 20. Thought that after Gorby tore down the wall, that the name would have gone out of fashion. i.e. Not too many 20 year old Adolfs.

never suprised

you can’t “sandbag” an “A” race…you can only be better than people (which he is), but that not his fault or in any way poor sportsmanship-sandbagging on his part.

Sander Rivnut

Some NYC/CRCA affiliated riders had superb results at the darkhorse 40. Sean Smith (Rockstar racing/Signature cycles) and Al Siebert (Nycmtb/Peak bikes) were 1st and 2nd overall cat1s, finishing 3rd and 4th overall in a field of almost 400 including some very fast pro riders. Nate Krax (Sids/Cannondale) also podiumed as 3rd place cat1 singlespeed.

Cosimo Brifter

Melito Heredia is a f’cking doper. There is absolutely nothing any rider can learn from him. He is allowed to race again and so be it.

But, no matter what, Melito Heredia is a f’cking doper

Cosimo Brifter

Lance is sandbaggin’ leadville. You can totally sandbag a cat 1 race. If you think a CP or PP race is as hard as a NCR think again.

NOt realy easy

Pulla was beating people using the same stuff. Put it aside, you see the guy training every day at 9w. not riding, but training.

quiterio

before gorby we had a generation carring the name stalin passed the 90.s. A famous basebakk player for example “stalin Javier. was born in the 60’s.

Bet many of those passionate Pulla haters are losers who were using the same shit and had no results. Others are simply moralizing gringos. Yes, the guy cheated, got caught, and that was that. That’s his problem, not yours, not now. Move on – and pull-ah that needle from your arm, mr. saturday morning racing moron.

Just a reminder that tonight’s Floyd Bennett Field race is starting earlier than usual.
