Great results from Gabele and Olson. Those guys are flying and look to be on track for the Cat2 upgrade soon. Great job at a tough race~!
Why the hell would Olsen ever want to upgrade to a 2?
He’s 38, married, has a demanding full time job/business.
There’s a huge difference between Cat 3 and P/1/2 races in the major out of town races.
For local stuff it doesn’t matter , except it would be fun to do the Mengoni P/1/2.
Olsen would be smarter to “sandbag” it if he actually gets the points.
A Cat 2 would be a status symbol but it won’t be any fun.
I was paying him a compliment. I have no idea if he wants to upgrade. It was just some positive praise. BTW – there are plent of Cat 1s and 2s with kids and full time jobs that do just fine. I could care less if he races 3s because he makes the competition better.

Leo and Victor “dominate” the C race again this past weekend. Good job, boys.
Veo and Lictor should be commended. They’re teaching newbies a valuable lesson that you need to know, and should learn early: every level you get to, there’s someone better than you that will beat you repeatedly. And they’re so much better than you, they shouldn’t be there beating you, they should be somewhere else beating someone else. So-called Sandbaggers.
To be clear, the technical definition of sandbagger is “anyone who finishes ahead of you that you recognize.” A wheelsucker, likewise, is “anyone who finishes ahead of you that you didn’t notice during the race.”
Don’t worry too much, though. When you get to be a 2, you race Pro/1/2 races mostly and you never have to worry about sandbaggers, because the guys kicking your a55 have nowhere else to race. So you’ve got that to look forward too.

Greg Wagner, the Z Team guy who placed 3rd in their field looks really strong, and it was one of his first road races. I was told that he is a nationally ranked mountain biker for the Sids team.
Whats with them putting on all these races and noone attending. They now do Mtn XC races and get like 4 entries. Would it not be more lucrative for them to only put on a handful of top level races and get good feilds? Strange .
Big congrats to Brian Gabele. He put in a huge surge with about 7 miles to go and soloed for the win. The 15 guys left chased hard and he still won by about 30 seconds. Well done Brian.

Rob Stern – Yeah! Congratulations. This is the payback for toughing out all those hilly spring races.
You might have noticed a class act like Colin Prensky didn’t hang around too long in either the 5s or 4s beating people up. In the same time that Colin has gone from Cat 5 to Cat 3, the sandbag twins have remained in the 5s chalking up win week after week. It might not be breaking any rules, but it sure ain’t classy.
If you are getting beat by these guys week after week then by the rules of Cat 5 upgrades it sounds like you are a sandbagger also. After 10 races you go to Cat4. Why are you still racing Cat5 yourself? Dont worry – when you get to Cat 4 there will be sandbaggers there also. Only more of them.
Such a riot to hear some anon cat 5 bitching about getting beat in CRCA races. Dude, just do your 10 and move up. If you dont like these twins, then you might get a race or two without them before they upgrade and continue to pummel your ass. Of course you will lose to someone else anyway until you get stronger and can actually race fast instead of moaning about how mediocre you are compared to the faster riders in your field.

Oh 5hit, I just did the same thing.
There are only a few definites in racing. There will always be sandbaggers, always be guys faster than you and racing only gets harder as you move up. Enjoy the racing and train hard. Dont for a minute think because some sandbagger upgrades that you are now going to start winning races.

I think you missed the point. If you only race masters then you do not have anywhere to upgrade to. 35plus is the top of the heap. Those guys are not sandbagging if they are winning 35plus 1-4.

Seems like Premier is hosting events like Vernon without USCF licensing. I was confused when someone told me that today. Wierd because they checked my USCF license and then had me sign a USCF waiver and release.
what other race organization is there that governs this stuff? was the race held under their rules? what about insurance if we had a pile up? and lastly, while i was out of the running for it, I assume the NY and NJ cycling federations dont use non uscf races for upgrading?
Maybe thats why their events are not gaining big crowds. You eat it hard, atleast at USCF races you get your hospital coverage paid for!
Acutally I am an under 30 Cat3 with no real desire to upgrade past 3. Why – too slow for the next level and not enough time to train. BTW – I hear besides racing Pro1-2 (I have raced plent Pro1-3 races) that the 35plus is by far the next hardest cat. The talent in the masters fields is no joke. Thanks

35+ is fast for the break the rest of the race is slower then a cat 5 race. Being legitimate is not the point. The point is the fags complaining about sandbagging.

This race was run under ABR(American Bicycle Racing) which, according to their website, does not recognize USCF licenses. Every rider at that race should have been required to purchase an ABR one-day or annual license. The race should not count for upgrade points with USCF and will also not count for USCF rankings.
The final race of the 2008 Cadence Tuesday Night Race Series wil take place tonight at Floyd Bennett Field. It’s double points.
So winning this race is like winning the Gimbels or Rocket ride as far as updrades.

you can’t cat upgrade from masters pst. for example, a 40 year old cat 4 win/placessin a masters race, even a big out of towner. it doesn’t count towards a cat 3 upgrade even though he might have beat cat 3s on up in that masters field.
If you want to talk about real sandbaggers. James Morrison is the champ. He has more top 3s than anyone in the North East and a handful of wins. He just got off an impressive showing at ESGs racing against some strong 2s and 1s. Now he is racing Cat3/4 at Capital RR. The guy is super strong but there is a point when you have to wonder if his ego is preventing him from upgrading.

It might also me good to know if the guys doing the complaining are factoring into the races you’re talking about. It would seem not as most of the top cat 3 finishers are usually old guys. So yeah I could upgrade but you’d still lose to James, or Juan (Sommerville), or Thomas Wood (Harlem & DE) or Michael Norton. If you can’t beat a bunch of old guys how important are those upgrade points going to be? Plus there’s a wealth of information there that you’d be better served to tap into than push into the elephants’ graveyard so your resume looks better on paper.

Let me set the record straight. The Cedar Mountain course was supposed to be part of the four day stage race that the NJBA refused to issue a USCF permit due to a schedule conflict with a time trial over 80 miles away. We filed a grieviance with the USCF and they sided with the NJBA. In the arbitrator’s conclusion he indicated that we were free to sanction this event through a third party. That is exactly what we did. As far as one day’s we integrated them into the release forms and picked up the tab. This race was fully insured and sanctioned. If you do go to the ABR site they indicate they do not except USCF licenses, however they do reconize CATS. The six USCF and now ABR officials that handled this race have over 40 years combined experiance officiating races. This is a common practice out in the Midwest where ABR dominates most grass roots racing. This race went off pretty flawlessly for a first year road race. (see recaps on Peloton East)
Ray busts his ass to make these races happen. We see it as a great opportunity to bring ABR into the state of NJ opening up more opportunities for grass roots racing at a cheaper cost to riders license fees etc. Based on the race scheduling and a new pending lawsuit against the NJBA we will most likely be hosting more of these events in the future. Of course we would avoid conflicting races in NY at all costs. We have a great relationship and respect for Charlie I. and company and know what it takes to make these races happen.

Hey Premiere guys — I heard that you never turned over thousands of dollars in insurance surcharges that you collected from the riders to USAC. Is that true? Are you going to do the same thing to ABR? And who will license your races then if you do?

The last thing we need is the slandering promoters that want to bring good racing to the area.
I can confirm what Care Bear is stating. As of today, August 12th, 2008 at 10:45AM Premiere Cycling has failed to submit nearly $5,000 in surcharges that were collected from riders or the accompanying paperwork to both the local association and to USACycling. This is why USACycling did not grant the permit for Cedar Mountain and Premiere was forced to run it through ABR.

Why are there so many people who complain who is in what class wah wah! Jesus…go out ride your bike and have fun! Isn’t what this is all about? I mean if this was your job thats one thing…but this is a hobby/passion of sorts. If someone is faster than you in your class then train harder or deal with it. Its a never ending cycle anyway. People complain about sandbaggers, well if they move up, then you’ll become a sandbagger, or if not, you will move up too shortly after and still race against the same guys you did in a lower class and cry just the same.

It was a major event (Giro de NJ) that was a 3 day stage race, and Premiere has made a legit decision into a legal shit show. Shame on you guys all around – esp for taking riders’ money and holding onto it – what are you doing with it – using it to pay your legal bills now? Asses.

Better yet, why don’t you explain all of benefits to the 60% of NY riders that attend Premiere events get. You know like a typical Branchbrook race… Gee, I raced in Prospect and never paid a dime in any kind of surcharges to the NY local??

Fraud is defined as an intentional deception for personal gain. If SmithBro advertises ona race flyer that they are collecting surcharges for USACycling but has no intention of ever turning that money over, it constitutes a fraud against the riders.
If however, SmithBro simply refuses to turn over the surcharges that they’ve collected (and have contractually agreed to give to USACycling) it constitutes theft.

for me its simple, its a lack of integrity. premier took monies from riders stating that the fees we paid were a certain amount because of monies collected for USCF surcharges which covers things like insurance and OUR participation in USCF. Then, due to whatever their grievances they have with USCF, determined to do some self help and keep the monies we forked over for their pockets.

Similar to what a few have said on here, they should they return those back to the riders. After all, its our money, a ‘surcharge’.

I didnt see any ABR officials, or use of ABR blue officials shirts. They just ran a loose, casual race with deceptive marketing, and then kept our surcharges for their own pockets.

To me its not a matter of the insurance or the money owed to the USAC or the NJBA. It is just a matter of deception. The racers should be told its not a USCF/USAC event and we/they can make a decision what they want to do. No one is holding a gun to our heads to race or not to race.
As far as the surcharges collected again this falls under a matter of deception. For us NJ riders the NJBA surcharges go into different programs, banquets, a very nice web page, etc. I may disagree where some of the money goes, but I don’t go to the NJBA meetings and get involved. I pretty much just want to ride so I keep my mouth shut. Most of the NJ riders pay the surcharges with the knowledge of where it was going, right or wrong so this should be turned back over to the riders or the NJBA. Its is not for Premiere to decide what to do with it.
I have participated in Premiere’s races over the years and have won and or placed highly at these events. Like most promoters there have been good events and others that have not been so great. It is very good they put on a lot of races but racing is not cheap and we the riders have to hold the promoters to a higher standard.

Someone makes a legit complaint about cheating, doping, or whatever. There are then lots of copycat statements, but thats what happens folks when a mob gets angry. More than one person wants to get their 2c in. Deal with it. Then, and most interestingly to me, there is the inveitable apologist with the weak moral compass that thinks that standing up to cheating or lying or ethical breaches is no big deal, and we should all shut up and ride. Its the anything goes mentality of these people that disturbs me really to the core. Ethics are the foundation of our society, and many young people in our midst have compromised this base with poor eduction, and poorer role models. Wake up and smell the cheating. Its not cool, and its not ok.
