I was out of town for the weekend, so I am forced to rely on the internet and pictures to try and recap the weekend. At Maltese, Ryan Tie of Bandit Racing finishes first, while Alder takes the team prize by, of course, riding a smart race. Stacey Jensen of Kissena wins the women’s race, and Stephen Lindholm of Sanchez Metro wins the 4 race. Results are here.
At the Cadence Prospect Park Series, Paul Burrowes of WS United wins ahead of John Durso of Liberty Cycle. In the Cat 4 race, Celeste Hernandez of Chelsea Bicycles wins. Neil Bezdel wins the 5s race. Results are here. Extra pictures here.
At the CRCA club race, Alex Bremer of Empire wins the A race, while Stephen Lindholm of Sanchez-Metro wins two park races in two days by taking the B race. Sean Patton of NYVelocity wins the C race. Results here.
The New Jersey State Road Race also happened, results here.
Union Vale results elude me and my google search, as do the results of that Crit they had at the Meadowlands. If you won these races, could you please let us know.
Word was Gabele of South Africa was 3rd at Unionvale, Berstein of BVF top ten maybe. Kyle Peppo top 10 in Pro1-3. Death March…
Hot and humid with pouring rain and lots of flats…
Bunch of sandbagging aussie juniors made the race much harder than necessary.
Those Aussies were likely the equivalent of a Junior Cat1 or 2. I was off the back on lap 3 when a kid from the team flatted. He chased so hard and back on the front group with ease. I could not hold his wheel or I would have had a free ride back on. Those kids if racing the juniors are Fitchburg are going to light it up. THey raced as a team and agressive. CRCA Juniors be aware. These guys are strong. These kids should have raced the juniors against Capala or the Pro1-3 Sunday.
To Matt Serra? He still racing
Many faithful readers will spend a good portion of their Mondays pondering the intractable conundrum posed by visiting international riders who do not neatly fit into the USA Cycling road categorization system.
Anyone, anyone? Frye? Frye?
ADler really crushed alot of strong teams at Maltese. Foundation, Mengoni, Toga, Somerville, Champion … those guys must be looking for thier wallets with very confused looks on thier faces this morning.

“Sandbagging juniors”? Fully-developed adults are complaining about being beaten by kids?
Adler “crushed” some strong teams? I think they won, no? But crushed?
curious to how the race would have panned out without those kids there. great result for brian gabele and adam zimmerman. the final climb destroyed my soul.
Disagree that the aussie presence made the 3/4 race “much harder than necessary”. It’s a bike race, no? In any case, the field rode hard, but not that hard. Anyone with decent fitness and crash avoidance skills (especially a 3) could have kept in touch with the lead group, and then taken chances on that hill, where the real race was won, or at least contested for 2nd.
Kudos to the kid who won, regardless of international status. Fact is, that nobody matched that move and the lead group just let him get away.
I am curious about how the race would have turned out if everyone that finished ahead of me decided not to show up.
CRCA discriminates, canceling the women’s field twice this season while never canceling any of the men’s fields.
Cycling, in general, discriminates against women. It is a sad fact that women’s racing is so underfunded, underdeveloped and under-appreciated. Just look at the size of the fields at major races (not just CRCA races). I do think that due to this (small fields, etc.) the women are unfairly burdened with lack of moto problems. However, there have been men’s fields combined this year for that reason. I do wish, though, that women had more of an equal chance to reward their training and hard work with their own races.
So every race outside of Park system – they provide results, 60 guys finish, 60 in results….in NYC, 80 guys finish, and they provide 10 spots of results. If it was a $10 club race that would be fine, but a $25 real USCF race…if you can get out top 10 2 hours after the race you can certainly get out full results next day…it is a deterent to pople showing up, becuase certain people a 20th is an accomplishment.
http://www.bikereg.com/Results/2008/06/29-Union-Vale-Road-Race.asp
Congrats to Evelyn Stevens –
She won the Cat 4 Union Vale in her first out of town race
you know what you got man. If you can’t count the guys in front of you at the end within a few seconds, theres no point in knowing.
You complain about moto problems? Have you raced a mens race? 90 percent of the time theres a moto problem. Secondly, you ladies race like a goddamn tea party, you could get someone on a recumbant to moto you around for the 20 minutes you race.
When the guys lap the women 4 times at ESG qualifiers, your right to complain was revoked.
Those guys made the race fun. They are a Jr. development team, all 16 or 17. I think they said they are riding the 3s at Fitchburg.
they cancel womens races cause there are like 15 women.
You’d complain if we combined you into the 1/2/3 and got shelled, saying it wasn’t fair.
We can’t win. So go recruit more women to race.
Principal….you show up, you race, you shoudl get a result.
You know what – let’s just say f it, and have bikereg and every other race just post the top 3 guys.
That makes the most sense actually…just the podium.
Am I the only one that feels like Alder anonymously posts kudos to themselves?
this isn’t running. i’m happy with the results the way they are. it’s not like we’re working of personal bests. if you want exact results, do a TT or a tri. we are blessed with races every weekend, which i’m sure wouldn;t be the case if somone had to lug the equipment each weak to record your 64th place in the pack. the organizers of unionvale run one race a year basically.
Fields were small. Men and women. 28 women total in 2 fields? Only 30 in the 1/2/3? They should have combined all the women’s fields, and made the 3’s in the 3/4 race up and the 4’s race down.
20th in a park race isn’t an accomplishment, and taking numbers at a finish is a pain in the ass. outside of the top 5-10 or so, people stop fighting for places anyway, and there are no upgrade points at stake, etc. it’s a club training race, and you should be happy you had the opportunity to race rather than bitching about the fact that no one documented your 18th place for posterity.
I guess my take is that you nail the top 10, agree no reason to bring crazy camera equipment, not trying to bring down the races as they rule, but my take is that you give a shot at the balance…I mean if you have 25 N/A’s so be it, but if you can easily place a breakaway group, or the rest of the field, do you give it a shot….I say yes.
oh dont get me start it on women racing.
they bitch and bitch
you can never please them. no matter what we do.they demand equal payouts
yet only 45% show up to some races
and when they get cancelled,,, well they cry.
do I cry when the cancelled the cat 4 races to acanideta the little girls fields?
YESSSS I cry and get angry
The race was tough, wet and basically laps of attrition.
Kudos to those kids from Austrailia. One looked like he was 14. I spoke to him at the start, he said it was the team’s FIRST road race in the US, training for Fitchburg. They race T-Town he added.
I agree with Aaron, they were an attacking presence in the race, making efforts instead of wheelsucking.
Too many posts are full of anon complaints, by folk who can’r race. I’m surprised that 40% of the 3/4s quit due to the rain.
The final lap saw the sun coming out. I think the humidity really hurt many in the race.
As an aside — Kyle Peppo did great in the 1,2,3, good job!
wow, winner of a post there, brother. top notch.
sorry, that was to “gilrs”
funniest part was when we got the aussie kid in our sights–and we let him go again
to 100th place is cool. That’s our sport: you’re at the front, or it doesn’t matter. Keeps the focus where it should be. Stops some goons from sprinting for 20th. Don’t complain about not seeing your result – realize that if your name isn’t there, then you didn’t get a *result*. Try harder next time.
And cycling does not discriminate against women – women discriminate against cycling. This is not hate. I’m sure the women could’ve ridden with the men’s fields at a club race. No, it isn’t ideal; but if there is a problem with the motos that’s not the worst compromise solution.
the women did race with the men, and they raced well. early on, when i was still waking/warming up, i was convinced that i was going to be beat by a number of women. they all rode strongly and a number of them were more agressive than the men.
When I fork over 30 bucks for a non- club race and get top 20 in the 1/2/3, I should be able to see my name in the results printed somewhere. This is basic customer service.
Charlie, where are the complete results for yesterday’s race posted?
Cool. Club races are training races, so hopefully taking a bummmer of a situation (my field got canceled) and turning it into a positive (I’m going to trash these testosterone filled, anon post meatheads) was a better training outcome for them.
those kids are good riders but they are 3’s. MOST of them raced cat 3 at ttown and there were a couple that tried their luck in the 1/2 field – finishing but not exactly contending.
from my perspective cat 3 on the road is appropriate for the majority of them.
was exactly who I was thinking of.
When I haven’t placed at a Charlie I race, and I dare to check the results, I get the perfect reminder: “What are you looking for, jackhole? Keep it moving. You didn’t place.”
Thanks for the great race promotion and keeping us honest, Charlie I.
Complaining about Charlie I, are you kidding me? How long have you been on the scene? Dude, get a f*cking clue. Really.
I learned a lot from racing with those kids. Firstly it was quite a reality check to see that these 16 year olds were teaching us a few lessons on how to race aggressively and to never give up at the front. With consistent attacking and counter moves they outsmarted us and took a well deserved win. The race would not have been the same without them
when the first lil aussie attacked over the yellow line during the neutral start i knew things were going to get “interesting”
you’re just jealous that you didn’t get a cool koala bear key chain, sucker.
I love these jokers who post about if you didn’t win it doesn’t matter, don’t sprint for 20th, etc. etc….that is totally not the point…if you dont sprint for 20th you will never be sprinting for 1st. Is that the attitude we want to pass down to younger rides, hey if you don’t win then go away, that is f’ing dumb.
Hey dude, if can’t shoot par, then don’t play golf.
I sprinted for a top 40 in Harlem P/1/2 – is that stupid, gay, uncool, not right…shoudl I have roudned the last corner and said, oh Dominguez and Bahati have me beat as do 20 other guys…let me sit up and say f it.
Results matter…..and if you are a promoter, my guess is that if you post deeper, you get more people…plain and simple.
Again – we should all just agree to post the top 3…..LOL…guys on this site who scan for photos of themselves, and know the exact moment results get posted.
Men
yes
results higher than in the money/points are not needed and are posted as a favor to you and should not be demanded. Please understand that $30 means squat these days or put on a race yourself to learn what it takes, or speak to your inner child because last I checked only babies get babied…;-)
wrong. sprinting for 20th has nothing to do with sprinting for 1st. the difference between 39th and 40th is totally insignificant. the difference between 1st and 2nd is not. you can sprint if you want but don’t fool yourself that you got a “better” result than the guy one place behind you.
Some solid NRC results from some CRCA boys:
Nice riding Matt & Lisbon.
1 Kyle Wamsley (Colavita Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) 1.50.29
2 Garrett Peltonen (Bissell Pro Cycling Team)
3 Matthew Johnson (CRCA/Empire Cycling Team)
4 Ward Solar (Nerac Cycling) 0.24
5 Alejandro Borrajo (Colavita Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light)
6 Shawn Milne (Team Type 1)
7 Clayton Barrows (Rite Aid pb Shebell & Shebell)
8 Kleber Ramos (garneau-crocs)
9 Richard Geng (Rite Aid pb Shebell & Shebell)
10 Gerardo Castro (Richmond Pro Cycling)
11 Jonathan Page (Battley HARLEY-DAVIDSON/Sonoma Grill)
12 Richard England (Bissell)
13 Lisban Quintero (CRCA/FOUNDATION)
Congrats to Kimani Nielsen who won some mountain bike race in NJ in the sport class and qualified for Nationals.
Ever notice how Boonen is either sprinting for the win, or rollin in on the back? If you ain’t up in there, there’s no point. unless its paying 20 deep in the park, don’t sprint.
Also, it appears everyone fashions themselves sprinters when it comes down to a group sprint. There are about a dozen guys around that consistently win those group sprints. If you aren’t one of them, why are you trying? You should know by now if you can outsprint Wilson, as you would have.
I’m well aware of his reputation and contributions to the local cycling scene. His races are run better than anyone else’s, that is why I go to them.
That being said, I’m not complaining about the results, but am asking where the complete results are posted. Top 15 or 20, anyway.
there were so many “fuck yous” in the union vale 3/4s. relax, guys. lets be friends.
Who said don’t race? I wrote “try harder next time.”
“if can’t shoot par, then don’t play golf.”
Bad analogy. More like: if you shoot 25 over, don’t be surprised and then complain that someone’s not following you around and keeping track of your score. And, try harder next time.
Let’s agree to disagree. Best of luck with the rest of your season.
I think he told me that that was his first mountain bike race!
on the tape…Lausanne, 30 June 2008
if you’re around 20th place, you shouldn’t be sprinting. most likely you’ll be the only one doing it. if you want to learn, you need to get in a better position, then sprint.
are you kidding? EVERYBODY around here sprints, its the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen. You gotta know when to bag it.
Whats truly sad is the guys that race in the middle of the pack all day, don’t do shit, still sprint, and get nothing.
you’re still not getting it. there is no top 15. no top 20. what you saw, those were the “complete results.”
http://kissena.info/more.php?id=365_0_1_0_M
they call me Sprinta…and let’s be honest, it feels good to sprint….5th, 10th, 20th, outside of 50th ….yup, still Sprinting!
To say these aussie kids are 3s because they are 3s on the track is stupid. I know 3s at the track that get dropped in the neutral zone at rrs. The winner from that team was no joke and would have done just fine in the 1-3 race. Your point is very dumb
one that feels like Alder anonymously posts kudos to themselves?”
you’re probably onto something…
JP Partland won the GC at the Tour of PA. Congrat’s
this anoynmous mocking of JP is lame
2006 Bear Mtn winner David Veilleux won Tour of Pa. Great win for David but the idea of so much money and 5 nights of TV coverage for an espoir race is a little out of proportion to what pro races get in this country. Also ridiculous that Michael Chauner got mentioned on the TV every race. Nice college graduation present from his father the race promoter.
“if you’re around 20th place, you shouldn’t be sprinting.”
No, it depends on the race and how deep it pays.
I wish I could’ve been sprinting for 20th at Harlem
“When I fork over 30 bucks for a non- club race and get top 20 in the 1/2/3, I should be able to see my name in the results printed somewhere. This is basic customer service. ”
No. Not at that series. That’s the way it is. Charlie I only publishes the paid places. He wants less dumbass sprinting in the middle of the field.
i wish “they” would promote unionvale a little more, or put it on a different weekend with less going on… it’s a nice race but always poorly attended
“Results = don’t get it”
Don’t do those races. If they’re not up to your standard, don’t race there anymore.
This was the first time that race was held the weekend before July 4. It’s normally two weeks afterwards.
It is truly amazing how much JFT knows about results for a guy with no results. How does he do this?
Who won the super duper meatloaf classic? AND, NO! – I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT SOME FUCKING SCRUB LEAGUE 3/4 BULLSHIT AT UNION VALE.
not no results
on a two nice results this weekend
C. Moorehead put down 2.38 kg of beef-based meatloaf in 60 min. to win the 2008 MLC. 2nd place was D. Kisinya at 2.13 kg. One competitor was at 2.7kg, but barfed before the end of 60 min. and was therefore disqualified.
This is the first year that there has been a women’s race in the park every time there’s a men’s race and it’s a mistake. There are simply not enough women racers in NYC. Note to racing director: cut back on the number of women’s racing dates, hold the races on weekend where there aren’t a number of other local races, and actually hire a moto car that will show.
It would be better to have, say, 8 good women’s races with 25-35 women in the field than this endless drudgery of a women’s race every week with only 10 or 12 women showing up.
what is with every lower category racer on this board bitterly calling “sandbagging” all the time?? it is SO GAY. and by GAY i mean girlishly bad when you should instead act like a man. kinda like a tranny with a beard bad.
omg hysterical.
Championship of the meadowlands. No one showed. Everyone who did the race could have gone back to Port Authority in one bus. Thundershowers canceled 1/2/3 saving the promoter the few dollars. Don’t mess with the NJBA.
I can’t wait to see the Marlton, NJ race results and see how many people showed there instead.
i can see the conversation now….
“hi honey how did your race go?”
“some group of 16 year olds got into our race and beat us up. they should make those kids race with the pros and cat 1/2’s who are in the prime of their life and fully grown up. can you believe this shit??! i’m going to post on nyvelocity.com right now!”
ray thinks he can run 50 races at $50 entry fees on every weekend of the year in spite of other events.
Loses his final appeal.
Who takes hin in Jan ’09 when his ban ends?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/01/sports/othersports/01cycling.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
Not only was the aussie team strong in that cat 3/4 race, they also worked very well together and blocked very well for their team mates. The one kid (Thomas Richards) broke away for the first 3 laps and was re-absorbed, but then passed me very strongly on the finishing climb. He got a well-deserved second place.
I spoke with the team afterward – turns out they flew in for Fitchburg. This may have been an easy warm up for them.
Apparently Adler has already had contact with Floyd. He’ll be on their team for 2009. But he gets his own camper.
good. Can we finally drop the floyd topic now, forever? dumbass shoulda taken the ban, and be able to race this year.
white foreigners racing in the tri state? amazing. I’m only used to brown.
Actually…, Landis is already commited to Kissena:
http://www.kissena.info/more.php?id=135_0_7_0_M
Marlton had a nice turnout. All you city islanders better WTFO because there is a new Belizian sprinter in town – name of Gregory Lovell.
Maltese had over 40 women registered, 38 starters. Increase of 6 from last year and up from 24 several years ago. Something seems to be working.
does he fill his bottles up with cachaca?
http://kwc.org/cycling/photos/manhattan-beach-grand-prix-08/
R&R have already been working with Floyd but couldn’t hire him to DS due to the ban. He will be the next on the bad boy list as soon as the ban is up. That is as long as they really are “here to stay.”
brooke miller is about as hot as a pile of garbage. luke warm.
i heard landis sits around drinking beer all day these days.
why not? whats the point? When that atom smasher in Hawaii gets going, the earth is going to be swallowed in a big black hole anyway. Might as well just give up and go ride a bike!
to that dude Alberto Blanco?
Alberto is living in California
now you see where you, your team mates, and everybody else scored points!
http://www.velocityresults.net/results/161/lou-maltese-memorial-new-york-ny
remember, its a “best 3 of your team points scored race”…
enjoy and see you next year ready to score! yeah!
Ryan Tie is a sexy man.
I’m glad someone said it because I have sure been thinking it.
You’re missing the point- with 40 doing Maltese and a handful doing Unionvale there’s not enough riders/enthusiasm to have a 3rd race (CRCA) in one weekend. That’s why only 12 showed up. And they were rewarded by having their moto pulled.
Cut back on the number of women’s event, like last year. And put them on weekends that aren’t so busy.
And why do the Bandit guys have such pale legs?
Anyone else remember Lucky Cheng’s? Is it still there (1st Ave and like 2nd or 3rd)? Used to go there all the time back in the 90’s. Never a bad beard at LC’s. Those girls (?) knew how to get the party started!
whatever happened to Zmolik. He did like 2 races this year. Got his interview and than quit?
Hard to train a lot during the day when you are a banker or lawyer. Thus it is hard to attain much of a tan.
The Sun Shines on the Weekend
Broken knee before the racing started. Then I think he was hurt pretty badly in a crash at Somerville.
Register for this:

Ryan Petitt won the NJ State RR on Saturday, his first 1/2/3 win. And yes, Marlton had full fields. Ray insists on going head-to-head with other area races. He always says “let the riders decide”. Looks like they are.
It seems crit versus road race and everyone chooses the crit. Why?
More money and the ability to do more than one race.
congrats to ann marie and betty tyrell– both won gold at nationals yesterday. ann marie beat the 2nd place rider by a huge margin. marie de rosa was 2nd in the betty age group. nice work.
Cause everyone around here is fat and thinks they are sprinters.
…and rr’s in NJ are almost by definition not highly selective due to flat courses, so not popular with climbers and such.
If you do not like hills and want your results posted then drive to CT. CT has a crit almost every weekend and they are all great events. Hartford, Keith Berger, Naugatuck, Bethel, CCC Crit, New Britian and Nutmeg. All give you full results (except Bethel).
BTW – PP and CP races are not the only ones to post only top 10s. Bethel has been posting only top 15-20 for like 10 years. Reasoning is that its too timely for the promoter to check results for 70th place guys rolling up the hill after leading out a teammate. Park races are great training but behind top 20 the results are just guys rolling in after a workout.
we need a full on Floyd argument. Evidently he’s exploring his legal options…
You must be a wiry girlie-man.
the riders make the race, course profile doesn’t matter.
any crits or rr this weekend?
probably.
when did silver or white shoes become the dominant color in the nyc peleton? how effing trendy. if you look at the photos, it’s like 80% of the field.
http://www.maxim.com/LizHatch/girls_of_maxim/2564.aspx
Dear god – you have to love the bike shorts tan on Liz

Dear god – you have to love the bike shorts tan on Liz
Liz, another hottie not hot enough to be a model/porn star but good pack fill, would love to ride her…wheel!
Stop racing when you care more about your photo shoot than the result…oh, that’s right, 99% of bike racers only want to see themselves in photos/mirror…
“name that quote”:
“Look at yourself in the mirrah”
with 12 preregistered riders Schooley’s is really shaping up to be a barn burner.
It is only wrong to “want to see themselves in photos/mirror…”
if your religion tells you so.
A poor Godless idiot afraid of anything nearing religion or any sense of morals.
Vanity was the sin and neither mirrors and nor photos were common at the time of it’s revelation.
Wanting to see your reflection or a photo is not a sin, the exaggerated sense of self-importance is.
You guys are deep
It’s going to be a cat 4 match sprint between Blane and Robin:)
http://www.truesport.com/register/events/viewriderlist.asp?ID=680
The original poster is not “afraid” of morals. Her one sentence implies the opposite: she has a well-developed, articulable moral compass that differs from yours. That is not the same as being “afraid of anything nearing religion or any sense of morals.”
I agree that she makes a value judgement on your morality by referring to it as “idiocy.” So her morality does not preclude belittling your beliefs, which gives one pause. But still, it was a thought-provoking comment on how our reflexive attitude to certain innocent proclivities – the desire to see one’s pictures, for example – are informed by traditional Judeo-Christian morality. Even from those who are not Judeo-Christians. I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise, given that this is our shared cultural heritage; but it was, nonetheless.
Discussing the existence of mirrors or a photographic record in your post is a red herring, though, and you are begging the question. She is saying that an “exaggerated sense of self-importance” is only wrong if your religion tells you so; that it is not – ipso facto – wrong. That is genuinely hard to disagree with, especially if we define religion as a moral code of any kind. After all, self-preservation – one could argue – is the ultimate obligation of any living creature. Nature would certainly support that premise; that the self is all-important and therefore it is impossible to “exaggerate” how important one is to oneself.
Interesting. Gives new meaning to someone typing “ANDY WHERE ARE THE PICS!?!?!?,” doesn’t it?
So anyway, who’s psyched for Floyd tonight?
there are 11 more dudes registered on bikereg ..
“Inside Seca”
What do I win?
Is Where Alder Race…hmmm…and you can eBay your stuff at Piermont, climb Ash, have a coffee…4 race for the price of 3…
Where in the post is gender specified?
Shouldn’t she be posting another complaint about the lack of a moto or the lack of interest in women’s racing?
we should be complaining about who will be bagging sand this weekend.
It isn’t. But why should I use “he” as the default pronoun?
As there is no gender-neutral pronoun in English (‘s/he’ and ‘(s)he’ are clearly abominations), I like to mix it up and alternate between using both “she” and “he” when gender is not specified to help eliminate the bias inherent in always assuming an anonymous poster is male.
I also like to write that people should “strap on a set ovaries” or “grow a pair of fallopian tubes” instead of “sac up” or “strap on a set of balls” when one is being exhorted to be tougher in some respect. Same idea.
Thanks for asking!

“your conscience” , when he/she wins a race doesn’t even pick up the prize and hides and whips himself/herself.
except that she/he never wins and thats the reason he/she hates others who do.

Might as well just give up and go ride a bike!
to that dude Alberto Blanco?
now you see where you, your team mates, and everybody else scored points!
http://www.velocityresults.net/results/161/lou-maltese-memorial-new-york-ny
remember, its a “best 3 of your team points scored race”…
enjoy and see you next year ready to score!
Broken knee before the racing started. Then I think he was hurt pretty badly in a crash at Somerville.
Register for this:
http://www.racelistings.com/register/events/flyer.asp?ID=680
Dear god – you have to love the bike shorts tan on Liz
http://www.maxim.com/LizHatch/girls_of_maxim/2564.aspx
Dear god – you have to love the bike shorts tan on Liz
