Harlem and others

It was a very hectic weekend of racing, so I will forego any puns or hyperbole and get right to the results.

At the CRCA club race, the results aren’t up, but judging by the photos, Adam Alexander of Foundation is able to raise his arms to hold off a hard charging Colin
Prensky for the win in the A race. It also looks like Evelyn Stevens of Radical Media wins the Women’s race – or she’s just really happy to have finished. I don’t recognize the winner of the B race so if you are him, let us know who you are.

At the Giro de Jersey, Jonathan Chodroff of Ouch/Maxxis wins the pro overall. David Freifelder of Westwood wins the masters 35+. Many more results are here.

At the Cadence Cup Prospect Park Series on Saturday, Gavi Epstein of Champion Systems win from a break in a race that was neutralized for safety. Lawrence Uhrlass of Kreb’s won the cat 4 race and Lincoln Wettenhall wins the cat 5 race. Overall standing are here.

No results from Housatonic as of yet, but rumor has it Evelyn Stevens of Radical Media won the women’s race by a large margin. Danny Inoa of BVF is reported have won the Cat 4 race. If you know who else won, please let us know.

Which brings us to the David Walker Memorial Skyscraper Harlem Cycling Classic. Jermaine Burrowes of WS United wins the pro 1/2 race, after a crash and a bike change in a break that contained Lisban Quintero of Foundation, Doug Rapacholi of Team Wais, Stephan Kincaid of Empire and gavi Epstein of Champion Systems.

Rachel Herring of the Chester County Cycling Foundation wins the women’s race, with Evelyn Stevens proving her humanity by finishing 6th.

James Joseph of WS United wins the 3 race with Filip Capala of Capala Brothers Racing second. Gary Birkhamshaw of Mystic Velo wins the cat 4 race. Gary Steinberg of Global Locate wins the 35+ race, and Eutimo Quintero of Foundation wins the 45+. Full results are here.

David Taylor won the Masters road race on Saturday, got 3rd at Housatonic on Sunday. Impressive.

Following up on a comment put with the Harlem photos — the Giro d’Jersey this year was the worst run stage race I’ve done yet — scheduled a TT next to a public school during dismissal (imagine drafting/trying to get around school buses) and did not mark or staff the turnaround. Road race was poorly marshalled, with police letting cars cross a busy intersection at the bottom of the pre-finish downhill — one of which almost broadsided a group of female riders. Made hazards more hazardous with big cones. Called the marshals off the Road race course before the women were finished (no I’m not a women — just knew because I was around for that part of the race). No info on race number placement until 3-4 AM before each race. Parked the support and officials vehicle in the middle of the sprint zone of the circuit race before the preceding race was finished (an official told me that people competing for 10th-25th place “shouldn’t be sprinting by now”). 2 porto-potties to service the hundreds of racers for the TT and circuit. The list goes on.

I was told that it was a different organizer this year. Last year it was a committee, but this year it was one member of last year’s committee who wanted to do everything himself. Does not seem as if it worked out too well. He sent an email to all the participants blaming the officials and police for shortcomings during the race, but seemed mostly to be poorly organized. I’m a big believer in supporting promoters generally, who do so much for the sport for less gain than they deserve. But in this case the guy worked really hard, but seemed over his head.

Thank you to John Eustice, Alan, CJ, Jed, Rockstar Games and whomever else out there deserves thanking for their hard work in keeping Harlem going in 2009.

i’m 1-2 i finished, but had to swerve off the course into oncoming traffic to avoid crashing into someone who wiped out in the 2nd turn of the last lap….

gavi epstein, wins in prospect sat, 15th at housatonic p/1/2 sun morning, makes the break at harlem sun afternoon! wtf?

Wheelsucker

Rapha wins housatonic….all you ralpha jokers might want to park it…they r building a good squad…hurst is a player!

Gomer

Wow, Evie won by a lot. But don’t forget Ann Marie Miller who finished 2nd in a quality field that included Silke Wunderwald and Anna Milkowski.

Wheelsucker

whats with olsen’s dopey helmet he looks special ed

motorist: whats with cyclist’s dopey spandex he looks gay

Evie wins park race sat and then sunday wins the pro field at HH by soloing the last 25 miles and putting 6+ min on the field, then places 6th in Harlem crit the same freakin day?!

Nice shootin.

Wheelsucker

LA… what a douche. It’s like Mario Andretti showing up to a SCCA race at Watkin’s Glen.

Ray Alba

of both racing and attending this event. Congrats to all that raced great this weekend.

Jermaine – great racing.

Gavi – GREAT racing this weekend! Keep it up.

Evie – nothing to say their but FREAKING AMAZING. What is if funny – is that when she is racing – she is always smiling – how is that!

Was terrorizing the 3s last year with the Exodus racers, Olson, Peppo and a few others. Hurst is a super nice guy and can climb like a goat and sprint. He will be one to watch. This is his first year as a Cat2 and he won out of a break with some real players (Lindine, Eneas, Driscoll, Marzot, King and Dillon).

Great Great job!

Wheelsucker

LA a douche? C’mon, who here wouldn’t love it if he joined a park race and shattered the pack.

Wheelsucker

there was an MIT wind tunnel study a few years back.

if I recall correctly, aero wheels gave little advantage over a standard box wheel. however, helmets were more interesting. even taping the vents on a helmet created significantly less drag than non taped. maybe the “funny” helmet isn’t so dopey

Wheelsucker

I wouldn’t love it. Who cares? Hero worship is for the weak-minded, fan-boy. Go and join CJ stroking his Hincapie shrine.

Wheelsucker

way over rated, as a sprinter. she needs to get in the wind tunnel, get on some aero gear, “altitude” mask training, and get on the National team already…when are Natz for Hot Teens like her?

Wheelsucker

has the fitness and tactics to back justify the dorky forward thinking gear…but forreals, whats next speed skier boots?

Wheelsucker

For all the racing that went on this weekend, I figured there’d be better banter. Olsen’s helmet choices and the AARP qualifications for local racers is weak.

How was Housatonic? Who did what? How about Giro di Jersey away from the hate? What about the girl in the Rockstar tenting handing out the beers? Focus, people, focus….

Wheelsucker

housatonic was hard. still, not having an uphill finish kind of makes the race one for the sprinters. it’s like cat’s paw coming out of the hard right turn.

Wheelsucker

i will take a pass on Housatonic unless they go back to the old finish. for me, it’s what made that race unique. still a hard race, but not so special without it.

Wheelsucker

wha? sure, it’s for a sprinter who can climb 4 or 5 thousand vertical like a mofo. i didn’t see any “sprinters” winning – i saw a few solo wins (not by sprinters) and then the *best sprinter in each lead group* win, which is often the case in hilly road races. no “sprinter” is going to make it to the end at the front there. if you were in field where a “sprinter” won, you and your field didnt ride hard enough the other 53.99 miles before the finish.

Wheelsucker

I am new to racing and saw the winner of the race go the mechanic area a bunch of times. One time he said he had a flat and got different bike, next lap someone else used his “flat”wheel. What is the wheel pit rule? can you go in a bunch of times and just get different bikes if you didn’t crash each time and you just want to switch bikes and sit a lap out. It just doesn’t seem fair to the other riders who crashed and only took their one lap out.

Wheelsucker

I saw Kingpin sacrifice a goat on the corner of 124th and then fill their bottles with it’s blood. Brian Gatens was also seen eating it’s heart while charging on the front of the bunch.

I told dad to take the keyboard away.

Sorry everyone,

PS – Great fun yesterday. Can we get announcers at CRCA races?

Rumor Has it that Tony Slokar took what he thought was some X right before the P12 race- it was actually a roofie and he doesn’t remember a goddam thing

That boy is definitely thinking ahead.

That helmet rocks! Where can I get one?

Note:People used to laugh at Lemond for clip on bars.

Wheelsucker

There is no limit to the amount of free laps. A referee stationed in the pit must determine whether a mishap was legitimate and if the rider is entitled to a free lap. The referee must keep track of all riders who are granted free laps and submit a written report to the Chief Referee at the end of the race.

Wheelsucker

why train? everyones got a minute at full gas in the legs.

50 miles a week, a few jumps, more time to fuck off with, less suffering. that was my roomate’s training in college, and he won more cat 3 races than me.

took him 8 years to get a phys-ed degree too

chubby bastard

Encyclopedia Brown

“I am new to racing and saw the winner of the race go the mechanic area a bunch of times.”

Yeah, that sounds totally reasonable. When I was new to the sport, I also spent the majority of my spectating time looking at the pits, checking to see who’s going in and out of them, keeping track of their numbers, seeing if they really had flats, if a teammate used the same wheel later, etc. Because – as a new racer -we all know that’s really the best way to learn about racing.

The most amazing thing is that “new racer” aka Kreskin managed to know which guy to focus on – he knew who was going to win ahead of time, apparently – and kept an especially close tabs on him.

3D5. Free Lap Rule. Riders shall normally cover the distance
of the race regardless of mishaps and must make up any
distance lost on their own ability unless a free lap is granted
for mishaps. A free lap may be granted for each mishap
subject to the following rules unless the official race
announcement states that no free laps will be allowed. On
courses shorter than 1 km (.6 mile), two free laps shall be
allowed for a given mishap.

(a) Bicycle inspection and repairs must be made in an official
repair pit. If announced in advance by the Chief Referee,
riders are permitted to cut the course to get to a pit, but only
while the free lap rule is in effect. Either an official following
vehicle shall transport riders to a single repair pit, normally
near the start/finish line, or riders must proceed to a repair
pit in accordance with Rule 3D2. If no following vehicle is
used, there should be repair pits at intervals of 1 km around
the course.

(b) There must be a referee stationed in each repair pit to
determine if the mishap was a legitimate one and if the rider
is entitled to a free lap. The referee must keep track of all
riders who are granted free laps and submit a written report
to the Chief Referee at the end of the race.

(c) A rider who is granted a free lap must return to the race
in the position held at the time of the mishap. A rider who
was in a group shall return at the rear of the same group the
next time around. A rider returning to the race after a free lap
shall be ineligible for sprint prizes for one lap thereafter.

(d) There will be no free laps granted in the last 8 km of a
race. A rider who is ineligible for a free lap must make up any
lost ground.

Encyclopedia Brown read that troll like the comic book he is, obviously a P12 who’s character is as foul as his inability to let his results speak louder than his anonymous accusations.

Wheelsucker

i was watching the harlem masters race from turn 3. i’d say about a third of the way in, the break had gone, and was about 8 seconds up, and as the main group came around a guy was was throwing punches at another guy–it was the two lead riders! if one had connected and/or if one of them had gone down, it would’ve been nasty for the group. whoever the dolt was (419 maybe?), he certainly killed the chase. from then on the break was never in danger of getting caught–to me, it seems, the guys in the break owe the guy who threw those punches a cut of their prize money.

Wheelsucker

you missed the prime just before. it was a case of metamucil.

damned right i’d be pissed if someone pipped me on the line for that.

depriving a man of fiber can be grounds for pump in the front wheel, breaking away-style.

Wheelsucker

That is a major win for Hurst — kid crushes it, and couldn’t be a nicer guy. Also now riding the local NY scene as well.

Wheelsucker

Very nice guy and works his ass off. Conn Coast lost a great racer. What happened to Marcinko? Haug still races, JP has a newborn keeping him busy and Hurst is now on Ralpha.

Wheelsucker

was Hammean Walker. I am not sure who the other dude was yet he was no Boy Scout either. He was doing some questionable blocking tactics for his man in the break. There is always a fine line when using blocking tactics and I am not sure whether that fine line was crossed. Yet, throwing punches during a crit especially in a corner is/was incredibly insane. Luckily, neither of the riders went down which would have taken down a large portion of the field.

Wheelsucker

And this is what happens when Mike Green does not personally take on the task of being there to take the results. Can the race director or another board member not get the results to Mike after the race so they can be posted while people are still even interested?

Anonymous

The other dude was Preferred/canondale. He definetely was doing some goofy blocking, but the little punchy dude has a big problem.

Wheelsucker

AKA Hammean Walker. Go ride Gimbels and you get to watch him in action week in and week out. Breakways go, he sits on and attacks into oncoming traffic for now apparent reason. He is strong but rides foolishly.

Ask Jaoa C (SP?) and countless others about Hammean and Gimbels.

Wheelsucker

Other dude was Warren Holzman and he’s the last guy to make an intentionally dangerous move in the field. He’s a very smart, safe rider with a lot of experience. He (and others) claim Walker was all over him for no reason. Pretty negative experience for an out-of-towner.

Wheelsucker

Hammean Walker was acting like an ass and over the top dangerous, I know protests were logged But I didn’t see a DQ. It was over the top stupid and dangerous. I don’t know why nothing was done about it. It will only continue until officials respond to the protests.

07:43 CRCA results, are you in the crca?

if yes, then why don’t you do it, jackhole – it’s a volunteer club.
if not, why do you care?

Wheelsucker

And if anyone had asked me to take or email the results to Mike Green I would have been delighted to do it. But I’m not the race director, or marshall director, or director of open racing, or director of junior development, or any other board position. If I was a board member and saw Mike wasn’t there, I would have inquired as to how the results were going to be handled and, if needed, would have helped get them posted.

Wheelsucker

Congrats! You are the new junior VP of Race Results. Please introduce yourself to the race director next race. He will instruct you how to make sure they are posted. Mike is very busy and has done a wonderful job on a variety of fronts this year. As a volunteer club, we rely on members such as yourself stepping up to help out. Thanks again for the effort.

so you just want to be the guy in the club that complains that the results of the TRAINING race aren’t up promptly enough THIS ONE TIME. Hint: if you got any sort of result in the TRAINING RACE you would know it already because you would have been hounding alex at the results table after the race like the exciteable A/B/C/Woman you are.

“And if anyone had asked me to take or email the results to Mike Green I would have been delighted to do it …”

10:59 said it right here. If anyone asked. He was asked last night to be the Junior VP of Race Results going forward. As a matter of fact, he’s delighted to be.

Wheelsucker

The point of a volunteer run club is not getting ‘asked’ to do anything. Its about putting up your hand and volunteering. Its my first year in the CRCA after many years racing in many different parts of the world. I can hands down say its the most impressive CLUB I’ve ever been a part of. These guys move mountains to keep y’all racing in the heart of one of the most urban environments in the North America. And you whine because your mediocre, self-entitled ass doesn’t have results (like others noted if you’d placed someplace that counts you’d know already). Start doing tri’s. They have those little timing chips and the results are up real fast.

I like his blog. He is a bit out of touch with the real world but he trains hard and has come a long way since his Cat4 days. I love that Meyerson was the guy yelling. He was likely just pissed that he got dropped from the leaders and probably barking because he could not hold Bernstein’s wheel. Why is it that Meyerson is always the guy in altercations. “Cyclesmart”….

Wheelsucker

contrary to your comment, you don’t need a win to upgrade at any level of the sport.

however, it’s kind of unfortunate to keep upgrading without a win for personal reasons.

Wheelsucker

Same reason your mother still drives the New Jersey Devils zamboni despite multiple DUIs. Playas play.

Wheelsucker

Go to USA Cycling. You need points not wins for a Cat2 upgrade. Only the very best of the 3s have wins before they upgrade. Some upgrade on points.

What business do I have racing as a 2? I was just trying to avoid being accused of sandbagging!

Last time I checked, the threshold for upgrading was 25 points. I was pushing 30 for the 12-month period when I requested my upgrade, so it seemed like the natural thing to do. Excuse me if I’ve stepped on anyone’s toes.

“While racing at Floyd Bennett Field is competitive please remember it’s still just a TRAINING SERIES! I heard some disturbing reports that riders were fighting, cursing and even taking their hands off their handlebars to grab other riders during the race. This behavior will not be tolerated at this TRAINING SERIES and riders who act this aggressively are not welcome at our races and should just stay home.”

That was from May. Charlie and Alan need to back up their words and ban those involved tonight, even if they have the leaders jersey. Disgusting display tonight.

training race: a race you didn’t do well at
sandbagger: anyone who finished ahead of you
sketchy: riding style of any rider other than yourself

and as AB just found out, there are only two types of riders: sandbaggers, and people who didn’t deserve their upgrade
