Hangover 6/15/2009

Races, results, repeat.

After a hectic weekend of racing, the lull of Monday morning has set in. There were many races over the weekend, and we have the results of a few of them here.

At the CRCA power points race, Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon Translations.com wins the A race; Ann-Marie MIller of Sanchez Houlihan-Lokey wins the women’s race; Abraham Soler of Foundation wins the B race; and Daniel Bersohn wins the C race. Full results are here.

At the Oxford road race, Empire has strong showing in the pro 123 race, finishing 3rd, 4th with John Minturn and Stephen Kincaid. In the cat 4 race, John Cutler of the CRCA wins the race with a solo break. Results are here.

And the last result posting race is the New Jersey State Road Race Championships, where Roger Aspholm of Westwood Velo wins the 35+ and Caryl Gale of Deno’s Wonder Wheels wins the women’s 35+ championship. Results are here.

Michael Beckerman of FGX wins the 3/4 race at Criterium New York on Sunday.

Evie Stevens Places 12th in the pro womens field at the prestigious Nature Valley grand prix.

As of this posting, many results have yet to be immortalized on the internet, so if you won or know who won this past weekend, please let us know.

Evie Stevens finished 12th in GC at Nature Valley after getting 9th in the final stage. Evie was only 2 minutes behind Olympic Gold Medalist and GC winner Kristen Armstrong in GC and was in the front group of finishers.

There will be a women’s only field at this Tuesday’s Tuesday Night Race Series at Floyd Bennett Field.

The race will start at 6:15PM and will be 7 laps (16.1 miles).

I am not wearing my number next race. I am simply drawing my number upside down on my jersey in pencil.

What was going on in the last lap and half at (P-3) New Britain (Nutmeg Games)? That race was sketchy from the first lap, and then 5 crashes in the end. I’ve never seen anything like that before. I saw people making sudden turns and pushing people out of the way 50 ridiers back all race long. Why would you do that? Ride smooth and safe. It’s not worth it!

The Kissena Cycling Club is pleased to announce two exciting new races on Governors Island. The Governors Island Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, July 12, and is open to Pro/1-2-3 riders only. The Tour of Governors Island will take place on Sunday, August 9, and is open to Category 3-4 riders. Governors Island, in the heart of New York Harbor, is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn. The five minute ferry from lower Manhattan to Governors Island is FREE!

Governors Island is an amazing race venue and the Park Officials are very supportive of our races. Please support these events so we can continue to have even more races on the island!

were there really 5 crashes in the last couple of laps? how many went down? had it rained as well or was it just stupidity / aggression going for the money?

Wheelsucker

Tony Maisto (Wonder Wheel) won the Masters race.

in other news, there was a huge pileup in the 4’s.

Wheelsucker

Is he finally riding a new bike? I love the white NYVC Cannondale. Looks like the Caad 9s are making a strong comeback in NYC.

Good to see a little aluminum out there.

Wheelsucker

Yes, there were 5 crashes. More people went down than I could count as I was going around, but at least 25. There was no rain. The weather and course were ideal. The only cause was poor riding.

schmalz

That is a new bike, I added a number to my CAAD, and went from 8 to 9. A few more years and I will be able to go to 11.

Wheelsucker

…did anybody else notice that the outside edge of the sweeping turn and both corners is *East River*. You might not break your clavicle but you better be able to swim and unclip. Diving skills will help.

i think a race on governors island is pretty awesome… maybe a once in a lifetime thing, kind of like the cape cod or martha’s vineyard (or something like that) race WAY back in the day. never got to do that, kinda pissed.

Guys in the masters 40+ wearing helmet mirrors in a race!! No wonder it was so sketchy. I guess the state champs brings out all types.

When did promoters stop using hay bales to cover up dangerous obstacles? There were big concrete planters just outside one turn, and a metal hand rail practically sticking out into the road at one point where the road narrowed. Everything is dangerous, but no reason not to take easy measures for safety.

what’s his anti aging secret?

i want me some of that!

everything and everyone bores me, please stop racing/riding until you are excitable cat4 again? Remember “Cat3” comic book? Take me back to those days, when “winning” Gimbels or the Night Ride meant something…FBF etc is so boring…
More Messenger/Scavenger races please…
More U-Lock Smashing Windshields please…
More Excitable Cat4’s please!

Wheelsucker

If you’re bored and not excited by the most vibrant local racing scene in the country with almost 4-5 races a week go way. Don’t bug us. And the local scene is hooked into the regional and national scenes. CRCA riders and some from Kissena like Bezdek dominated the regional races and Empire’s one of the top amateur teams in the country and played a big role in the road race at Nature Valley and Evie is the most amazing rider to come out of the city in a long time. If you’re not excited by this stuff don’t bug us with your problem. Get help for your dyspepsia.

dont b dyssing me!

interview with an empire!
Evie does Dallas!
4, maybe 5, boring races per week…where are the guys that make a living racing?

Wheelsucker

that Mark Cavendish is the fastest man on a bicycle period. The way he came around Thor today was just crazy and while Freire tried very hard the gap just widened. How he gets so low over the bars. It’s truly amazing.

Wheelsucker

Won the Cat3 at Nutmeg Crit and 7th at Pro1-3. Pretty awesome showing for the guy. Great job!

Why does Evie not yet have a pro contract? I know there’s not a lot of money in women’s racing but what does the girl have to do? I couldn’t imagine there being a better pro-prospect in the country?

Wheelsucker

Evie’s been racing for a year. Be patient. If she gets a few top ten finishes at NRC events, one of the bigger teams will snap her up. If she wants that. Who knows, she may make more money doing whatever she’s doing now.

Wheelsucker

It takes time to get noticed and even then, its a lousy market to get a pro contract. For comparison, Erica Allar recently signed a contract with ValueAct Capital. Allar was racing for an amateur team without a pro contract just a few weeks ago when she won the Clarendon Cup. That’s as big as Battenkill in terms of a quality win.

There’s a lot of people who should have a pro contract (again), will get them eventually, or could have had them in a better market. Lets just hope Evie is in the “will get a contract eventually” category.

Wheelsucker

it was a temporary contract with ValueAct. Evie will get her chance soon.

Better question: if a criterium happens at Floyd Bennett and only 25 people show up, does it make a sound?

Wheelsucker

Teams sign riders in Sept thru Nov. Rosters get set and there are few changes. Laura van Gilder signed with a team that ended up folding and didn’t get on another team. No one knew Evie last fall. I mean she won the Cat 3 at Green Mtn., not exactly on the radar for NRC teams.

Cat. 1/2 does not equal pro, it’s about the $$$ in the contract. Sticklers will say the only pros are the ones riding for UCI Women’s teams such as Columbia, but there are plenty of UCI Men and Women on $0 contracts.

Wheelsucker

Clarendon was NRC, which for ~$750 bought itself more importance than Battenkill.

I would have liked to have seen Evie do Montreal/PEI. Winning PEI and a good Montreal TT were within her abilities (both cannibal).
