Hangover 5/9/2011

What happened?

There was a lot of racing going on over the weekend, but there’s not a lot of official results posted. I can tell you it looks like AXA treated the NYC Grand Fondo like a cash machine, and that Diehard and Ricky Lowe won a preposterously large trophy.

The Fondo results are here. The finish video for the Sunday race in Central Park is here.

The rest is a haze of rumor and innuendo, so if you know what happened, let us know.

As a local guy who has been at it for some time, I think we as racer should start holding promoters accountable for their questionable organizational skills.

It’s a huge disservice to all of us if promoters don’t submit results to USA Cycling in a timely manner and even worse when they only place the top 5 guys. As a 5,4 or 3 some of these races count for upgrades in most cases getting 9th place goes toward your upgrade points.

We pay from 20-35 for the privilege of racing at FBF, PP, CP or what ever venue the city allows. I don’t understand how Tuesday FBF can place ever rider that crosses the line but can’t place higher then 5th place in the spring series and 10 place in any other race. I also don’t understand submitting results to bikereg but usacycling.com

What exactly is my fee paying for, I have heard rumors of promoters making as much as 4,000 a race maybe take less profit and help give us what we all deserve and have earned an official record of our placing.

I agree, there needs to be a way to give feedback to promoters without whining to the park board or anonymously complaining on the internet. There are those with the ability and desire to promote A-level races and we as a community of racers need to enable them.

Getting results has nothing to do with a promoters organizational skills. I raced Saturday and Sunday this past weekend in the parks. Both days went really smoothly. I showed up, I breezed through registration, the races started on time, there were plenty of marshals and lead vehicles, etc. From my experience, everything was well run. Getting deep results usually requires hiring a timing service which will cost several hundred dollars per day. The entries both days were below $30 which is hard to find these days. That’s really not much considering a hefty chunk of that goes to running the race, paying for the marshals, officials, insurance, park fees, and prizes. I know because I do a little out of NYC promoting. I’m sure if you got a group together that wanted to have a timing service come in, you could approach the local promoters and politely discuss it. You should also be prepared for the entries to go up for the added service. Promoting is a tough job, and I’m always appreciative for the people that do it even if they actually make a few bucks while doing it.

news for ya – the upgrade people really don’t give a crap about your park race results

As an excitable Cat 3 and 35+ Master Sandbagger I have no intentions of upgrading. But if I did and the race distance and number of participates met the USA Cycling Federations upgrade critera (they sometimes do) then I would expect the results to be counted and in order for that to happen they have to be counted and submitted.

My second case in point is every out of town race I do where the cost is usually the same they give results to every “participant” that crosses the finish line. Why is it that NYC races are so complicated that they don’t.

Just look at Branch Brook Races you can place in 60th place and they are able to capture and submit that result.

Your Fee pays for the port-a-potty, it was clean as clean as port-a-potty’s can be clean and there was paper. Thanks for the fee.

newsflash: if you’re scrambling for upgrade points by looking at that 10th place result in 4s or 5s or even 3s, you’re not as good as you think you are. if you got top 3, then it matters and you have a legit gripe. otherwise, get over your entitled self and race. suggested new tactic: pedal faster. it’s a time-tested strategy that has been proven to work.

For those of us who have been racing more than 3-5 years, there use to be no online results and USA cycling list of races and results you entered. Guys would actually have the promoter sign there number and they could send that in as proof of placing. Ask guys like AKI Sato of the Bethel Series, Sommerville, Ruiz the old timer racers.

If you really want your placing sent in and you are in the top 10, the promoter will likely sign your number and put down the number of entries and vouch for your placing. You can scan this in to USA cycling and they will likely accept the result. This is oldschool but it works if you are that hard up for points…

Other than that, you could just enjoy racing for the sake of fun exercise and let the points come in as they come in.

You should complain. You should complain to USA cycling. They collect a fee on every race. So make them work for the money. You should also politely ask the head official how deep they plan on going with the results. Then it is up to the promoter to submit results to USA cycling. It’s only difficult to do the first time. After the first time you should have a system in place and it gets easier. With that said, if you are really interested in getting listed for coming in 33rd place, stick around for the results to be posted and ask the promoter and head official if you are not listed.

Get into top 10 with 200 meters to go…then count how many you pass/pass you, and figure it out already! Stupid selfish F-Kheads!

Excitable Cat 3 Master Sandbagger

Your youthful vocabulary and and keen intellectual problem solving skills is exactly the sort of resolution and dialog I was looking for.

defending no results. Good promoters post them and send to USCF. Lazy promoters don’t. End of story.

Bar Plug

If you know a promoter sucks – don’t do the race. There are plenty of good promoters.

Any video of the lowly cat. 5’s finish? And not just the “cheater”, yes my salty vag is sore.

Race Observer

If you placed 1,2,3 you need to KNOW.

If not you’re sa bunch of whiners and need to TRAIN HARDER!!!

Top ten placings are valid only for upgrade. If you are a top ten you KNOW already so STOP being panzies and send the results to USACYCLING or the local official.

What a bunch of entitled PANZIES!!!!!!

I’m not sure what the other guy’s point was, but its not just the lack of results. There’s more to running a race that having results posted (though that helps). Its good, for example to have course marshals and lead vehicles that actually know what they are doing. And more promoters need to get their shit together than just AVD.

One would think that the best tactic is to boycott poorly run races. We’ll see if this spring poor SS turnout will have any effect on the future.

PS: Why isn’t Ivan’s last name Drago?

Brent Crude

No NYC race is long enough that 6th place will give you any upgrade points.
Now back to our regularly scheduled stupidity.

Throw Down
