The wet weekend is behind us, and we can now look ahead to… weekday wetness. Proving once again that Mother Nature giggles hysterically to herself when cyclists fall over.
Saturday’s action at Prospect saw Gilberth Gomez Valverde of Northeastern Hardware win in a break in the 123 race. Juan Aracena of Westwood Velo won the cat 4 race, and unattached Sean Barry won the Cat 5 race. Results are up here.
Up at Jiminy Peak, Jamey Driscoll of Rock Racing won the pro 12 race, with Dan Zmolik of Empire 3rd. In the 35+ race, Troy Kimball of Westwood Velo was 2nd, with Mark Alden of Blue Ribbon Translation 3rd. Colin Prensky of Sanchez-Houlihan Lokey was 4th in the cat 3 race. Paul Carbonara of Axis won the 45+ race. Alistair Siebert of Setanta was 2nd in the Cat 4 race, and Evelyn Stevens of radical Media won the women’s race. Results here.
On Sunday at Colt’s Neck, David Junius of Westwood wont he cat 4 race, Amazing Kevin Brubaker (“amazing” is Kevin’s magician name) of Pacifico won the Cat 3 race. Caryl Gayle of Deno’s Wonder Wheel won the women’s race. Fabienne Gerard of Teany Cycling won the women’s cat 4 race. Tony Maisto was 2nd in the Masters 45+ race. Results are here.
Results from the Criterium New York are not posted as of publishing time, and other races have yet to immortalize their placings; so if you won any of the others area races, please post your results anonymously and congratulate yourself.

Just a note that, contra the results posted, TeaNY took 3 of the top 5 spots at Colt’s neck: Fabienne Gerard racing for victory on Sunday at Colt’s Neck after taking 7th in an open field on Saturday at Jiminy, Annie Donovan getting 3rd and Colleen Conway for 5th. TeaNY women rule! (their cats.)
John Minturn won memorial hall

I love bike racing girls.
We rode in the pouring rain at Colts Neck and want to congratulate Kevin B on a stellar ride, he attacked and managed to rally a three man break that stayed away for three laps and more. Great result, well deserved. Surprisingly very safe race given the weather conditions and apparently no flats. Excellent course!
Go Brubaker!
Thanks.
i love big tex
AVD STOOD US UP!!

oh my god, you rode in the rain? How did you survive? Is your bicycle ok? I wish I could ride in the rain!
Wanted to just say thanks to all riders for being so respectful of our little neighborhood. Watching your guys warm up got me so ancy to get back on my mountain bike and fly down rocky boulders like I used to in Laguna Beach.. “Top of the Mountain”… VERTICAL!!!!
Hi to the great guy who stopped to say Hi to my puppy n me!!
By the way… that was not cold yesterday and the rain was lite! Try riding in 35 degree temps with an Alaskan Storm going overhead! That was the Los Angeles Tour 2000… 26 mi thru Beverly Hills… ended at Rose Bowl… couldn’t get off bike cause the feet were NUMB…Now.. that’s COLD.
Seems like a less congested part of the road
“noy”-must be the new flavor.
Evidently spelling is not a forte at Teany.
Congratulations, P. Carbo, K.Brubaker, Caryl Gale(My WW Teammate)and Fabienne Gerard for great wins this weekend. Hello to the Colts Neck resident with the beautiful Italian Greyhound, dust off that Mountain bike and get out and ride, who knows, one day you may enjoy riding in the rain like the rest of us….
Tony M
I won the Criterium NYC, you guys were on the wrong runaway. I was in a 2-up sprint with a Piper Cub and a Boeing 737 and nearly got pipped at the line. AVD left a note that my results would be posted next year and the prize money was in the mail.
That’s considered a 3-up sprint, idot.
the piper club was a lap down
those crazy radio-controlled jets might lack the top-end speed, but they have quite a jump. plus, when they are sprinting on your tail, it sounds like you are about to get hit by a surface to air missile. I gotta say, I’m surprised none of them factored into the final sprint.

2K for top 6 overall – 800 to winner, 10 top places, good fields, hard hour of racing, if any of your semi-employed riders can make it out for the 6PM and 7PM starts
Charlie,
Is there a way to register before or only pre-race(s)?
According to one inside source, this even never happened.
on your 5 boro bike tour podium. you obviosuly rowed crew in college.
There is no pre-reg for Tuesday Night FBF Series.
Kimani Nielsen (CRCA/Luzzo’s) wins the cat 2 30-34 group at Wawayanda.

Lance Lactit
(f;)nny? I thought he and Kevin Livingston fell out…)
I think Lance is racing “clean” this year, just to attempt to “clean” his conscience and image…

Also on BikeReg.com
It usually is a really hard 1 hour, as they take top 10 results of 20 races, so guys take chances…and it almost always ends in small broken up packs.
They also have a pretty awesome kids race during the middle months and the kids win money for every lap they finish.
the 1st race is a scratch race, the 2nd race is a points race, waterfall, every 5 laps, 1 point a lap every lap, that type of thing.
Ok, this is too funny:
http://euphoriabeforetotalimplosion.blogspot.com/2009/05/race-report-jiminy-peak-cat-3-2009.html
AVD is doing such a great job promoting this race. The one suggestion I might have is……………..TELL US WHERE THE @#*% IT IS GOING TO BE! Maybe this is a new twist. First you have to find the race, then you can compete it. It’s a bike race and game show all rolled into one.
Hint number one- It’s in Brooklyn.
Hint number two- It’s on a runway.
Can I see what’s behind door number three?
So we have a runway and Brooklyn………….
Where is JFK?………no…..no…..
Okay maybe…..FBF then…. yeah yeah FBF.
Winner……..I think!
Now what do we have for the winner? We have a horribly paved six corner crit………with cone maked corners. Yes that’s right six times a lap you have a chance to hear “holdja line” while dodging little orange bullets ejected by those who can’t.
But that’s not all, we will also guarantee one flat tire and all the wind that you can handle.
Kimani Nielsen (CRCA/Luzzo’s) was class (a nice guy) and it was great to see a skinny tire guy do so well at such a hard race.
Alistar Siebert of Setanta got a hard earned 4th in his Cat 1 class.
..is a beggars cup. The name of the FBF series should be changed, unless it should read like a gravestone of our now soon to be long forgotten favorite bike shop. I hope Charlie already got their part of the cash….
Why? Did Cadence close or something?
Cadence NYC will stop operating.
I’m pretty sure I just heard a collective, “I told you so”
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the closing of the Cadence Cycling & Multisport Center in New York City at the end of business Sunday, May 17th.”
http://www.manymail.net/viewhtml/email.aspx/2003/434708/
Shame to see such a nice shop go under. I guess that high end anything is taking a beating nowadays.
Not to be a completely self-centered city dweller – when do the sales start?
http://www.cadencecycling.com/news/?a=v&i=498
I doubt they will have big sales when they can just send their inventory to the other store in Philly. I agree, it’s a shame, but that location was a disaster.
NOW where am I going to tread water in the infinity pool while sipping a Soy Cap before work?
the end of an era. how many teams do they sponsor?
The new Cadence Cup: http://www.oppictures.com/singleimages/400/SLOP16RLRCT_2_1.JPG
So did AVD really just cancel his race and not tell anyone?
Wrong location! they were out of touch with the community.
Strictly Bicycle got it right, a bike shop near GWB that opens at 8am, it was that simple…
He told you. The announcement went out with the spring series results.
The new Cadence Cup:
If Cadence had been open at 8AM, would you have been there to buy anything? I don’t know anything about the owners, but the guys who work(ed) there busted their butts and really went out of their way to take care of people. Hopefully some of the good shops will divide the staff and keep them employed.
oh come on, the salespeople there (besides AMM) were the worst part about the shop. the best part was the locker rooms. yeah, you know what i’m saying.
They took over sponsorhsip of NYC racing singelhandedly and gave a lot in a very short time. We should all be thankful for that, sorry they are closing and wish the owners all the best at their Philly store. Thank you…
was amazing. I never bought anything expensive in their but was treated very well each time. The only place in nyc to buy $5 tubes. Very sad to hear this news.
I wonder what will happen to the space. Maybe TT Vegan can just convert it into his downtown lair.
Just also wanted to give props to Gabby Fisher of CRCA/3rd Nature for her 2nd place in the women’s 4 field at Colt’s Neck. She was pretty much away by herself for the entire race- Fabienne, the monster that she is, bridged up toward the end of the race, but sat on, and sprinted for 1st. Gabby’s effort was an impressive one to see, so kudo’s to her. I heard that the promoter tried to award her 1st place.
Anyone have a link to the 5 boro results!?!? Marco, any pics!?!?
5 boro results: http://tinyurl.com/4gotma
Who was asked at work today, “How did you do in the big race yesterday?”
me! then i had to explain how i rode for three hours inside instead of participating in a “bike tour”
How the fuck do you try and award first place to anyone but the winner?
Yeah, other people who love to ride bikes, riding them in the rain, all around the city, just for fun. What a bunch of A**HOLES!!!
Forreals. Sounds like Gabby read the race correctly and was smart to sit on. Therefore, a win.
Actually, if you had raced the Cadence Cup this Saturday morning, you would have heard the announcement that the Crit was cancelled. Yes actually Charlie I was more on top of announcing AVD’s races than AVD was.
they didn’t ask me about the 5 boro tour but most people I know told me I should definitely do that big race in france
yet again proof at how much of of fringe sport we enjoy
Forreals, Gabby didn’t win, Fabienne won.
Hope Jay Snider and Brian Walton are good, and of course the NYC local staff, they have put so much into this endeavor.
If you are being coached thru Cadence, stay loyal at least through the end of the year.
If you have placed and order, see it through. The Philadelphia store can still provide so much for the entire region (mid-atlantic).
Best wishes to the owners and staff,
a fan and friend…
My shoes smell.
fringe sport, maybe, but definetly Cadence had a fringe clientele that literally didn’t know what to do with their excess cash.
in a break of 2? one word: gutter.
What about races like the Tour de Parc Criterium presented by Cadence Cycling?

Its always sad to see a bike shop close, and its obviously not good for local cycling in general to see Cadence go away. True though that it was almost pre-determined that it would not last, given that abysmal location combined with niche high end focus. Location is always a killer, but to compound it with high end stuff was just another nail in the coffin. Oh well. They tried, and hopefully will come back to NYC some day in a better spot and broader offering. They would do very well with the service focus and friendly attitude in so many other places in town. The new shop near GWB is indeed perfect example. Every rider in the city passes that damn spot – how many ride through Tribeca or even live within 5 mi? Duh.
Fab was stronger and rode smarter: Gab was out there for day and sadly she did not have the engine to stay away. that is racing.
If she keeps doing these crazy attacks she will become the female Jacky Durand.
All,
Tomorrow’s Floyd Bennett race is canceled. I just spoke to the Park officials and a film shoot on the road where our Start/Finish is located is not finished due to the rain the last couple of days and will not be finished in time for tomorrow’s race. Also, because of the rain, there are some BIG puddles on the course and most likely I would have canceled the race regardless.
Again the May 5 Floyd Bennett race (tomorrow) is CANCELED.
Please let your teammates and fellow racers know.

if you really want the win, just stop pedaling. gabby comes through, and you draft her for the sprint; if she doesnt you send her (and yourself) back to the pack. if you want to win, you gots to risk losing.
great ride both…
Charlie,
Are you sure they don’t need a bunch of racers in spandex as extras in their film? Wasn’t PeeWee’s Big Adventure better because of the inclusion of the TdF riders in it?
Sad to hear this, I was really looking forward to FBF races.
Shhh the movie is The Dan Schmalz Story, starring the Hoff as Schmalz. They’re filming the BIG SCENE of Dan’s victory at Floyd last year. No word on who’s playing Potty, Andy, Charie, Marco…
F-in’ MothaF-in’ F-ers!!! Gaddam them! They screwed up the last race last season, now this!!. DO NOT MESS WITH FBF. I don’t come to your house and F-up your most-important-hour-of-the-week, so don’t mess with mine.
Sheeeeeeettt!!! Been waiting 8 months for tomorrow. Bitches all….
Right on. The only race that matters, canceled!
I thought that was Bear
People….Winning a bike race is not just a battle of strength and fitness. Gabby is an impressive cyclist but strength alone does not guarantee a win. Juuuust sayin’;)
-He who shall remain anonymous
Fabienne was the smarter of the two. She knows when to hold back and when to attack.
Fabienne are you single?? You are fiiine!
meow
Goooooooooooo Fab 5!
I accidentally picked up someone else’s (identical) saddle bag at the Cadence Cup race.
