Hangover 5/26/2009

Oh Kermis.

The opening weekend of Jersey Kermis season is behind us, and due to a lack of diligence and complete holiday weekend sobriety on my part, we only have the results for largest of the Jersey Jewels. In fact my information is so incomplete, we don’t even know who won the state line cummerbund sprint in the Gentleman’s Race.

Sebastian Haedo of Colavita-Sutter Home won the Pro Race at Somerville, while Tina Pic, also of Colavita-Sutter Home, won the pro Women’s race. Missing of course, are the results for all the other Jersey and Connecticut races and the tales of glory for the lower category races at Somerville.

There is a Floyd Bennett race tonight and the race is held rain or shine.

wait, I’m confused, Evie was in a race but she didn’t win? how could this be?

…, um…, just realized it doesn’t matter, she’s still totally awesome!

Wheelsucker

Pretty sure he was using body english to keep from going down. The finishing straight was a mess.

Eric

Neil seems to be doing quite well without any of the helpful and kind-hearted advice found on this site. Maybe you should join Kissena so you don’t have to feel that way…

Aren’t you able to remember your own name? If so, then consider signing.

Eric Robertson

Wheelsucker

Cool Eric. Good luck with that. Of course, if he had a few more guys capable of working for him they’d have pulled back the two man break and he’d have had the opportunity to win the race. Which is pretty much what the point was it seems. The guy is legitimate.

Wheelsucker

could they put the ny state crit champs any farther away? jeebus! might as well be in f’ing montreal.

Wheelsucker

great. allow me to enjoy being bitter this year then.

how far a drive is saratoga from nyc? 3-4 hours?

Wheelsucker

come on eric. the only guy he has in the 2s to support him in races is jp partland. and his haircut is not even race legal.

Wheelsucker

Pull in the 2-man break? That break went with just a few laps to go and they still held off the field, which should have organized. Maybe Neil should learn to mark the better riders (like Spohn and Woody) and not get caught with his pants down.

I’m impressed he won the field sprint, that guy is a hammer, but other than getting that kit for free Kissena seems to offer the guy nothing in terms of team support. He was on United last year and he’ll be on another team by the end of this season, I’d bet.

-An Expert on Everything

Eric

The haircut is a problem. I’ll have a word with him. Oh, and I’ll upgrade to a cat 2 soon too – not that I’m capable of helping him much.

But really, what teams out there really offer anything to their riders? The only 2 teams that I know of are Mengoni and Champion Systems. They seem to be the only teams with any real $$ behind them – they travel, have a lot of 1’s and 2’s, and you get a bike and kits. The best you can do with the rest is MAYBE get a free kit, but take United for example – you have to buy your own team bike. It’s the same with all the other local teams (and most of them make you pay for the kit) that I know of.

I’d love to be wrong and hear that sponsorship dollars are plentiful, and every team has great offers for new riders but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Please – prove me wrong.

As far as Kissena is concerned, look at the majority of our races: they are 1/2/3 fields. Kissena is well represented in the 3’s, and we rode well for Neil in the Spring Series.

Rufus is in new Daddy land. We hope to see him soon.

Eric Robertson

Wheelsucker

Mengoni seems to be dead. The only teams with financial support and strong squads locally are Empire and then ChampSys. Cannondale Bike Reg is prob the strongest NE EliteAm squad.

Wheelsucker

What about the Raphla? They aim to win races in style and engage with fans and riders everywhere.

Wheelsucker

Capala needs to upgrade? He might be getting results but he is really young and I am guessing the difference in mileage may be too much to jump to.

Just because someone is finishing well consitently does not mean that person needs to bump up.

Should I bump down because for the last 2 years I have had no results?

Wheelsucker

d-bag commenters suggesting a cat 3 should upgrade deserve no response. if you cant beat filip and dont like it, downgrade.

Eric

Yeah – he’s only 19. Strong, though. Could easily hang with the 2’s in a crit, but the road races are a tough jump for anyone.

Still, you aren’t going to learn anything from those that you beat consistently, and he’s been very consistent. I find the 3 field still filled with riders with very poor riding skills, so he’s not going to get any benefits from staying with the 3’s.

Robertson

Wheelsucker

big congrats on a great result this weekend at somerville. i really do mean that. that was one heck of a finish and you deserve a ton of credit for hanging in and battling to the front. but, please lay off the nyvelocity for a little while. a podium in a cat3 crit is not license to respond pedantically to every stupid post on this site today.

Eric

I’m sitting at home relaxing. A bit sick today. What else am I to do but play on NY velocity. Not looking to argue or disagree, just chatting. Thanks for the congrats 12:49, 1st would have been better. Robertson

Wheelsucker

if everyone signed in then it wouldn’t be an issue, but eric is signing his posts amidst a sea of anonymity. maybe you should relax instead.

Wheelsucker

You fucker eric Roobertson, whatever your name is. You dont know the guys on united except for what you heard from neil. As a result, i am begging you to please keep our team name and the riders out of your stupid conversation. We dont know you and dont care to, yes you have to buy your own bikes but you can twist and turn and shit and we still have better result than the champion system and mengoni, so fuck off.

schmalz

So, are you saying Eric was right about you buying your bikes then? And doesn’t almost everyone buy their own bikes? No need to get all bent out of shape here.

Wheelsucker

“yes you have to buy your own bikes but you can twist and turn and shit… so fuck off.”

This has got the be the most insane comment ever in nyvelocity history. WTF?

Yeah, WS United, you sure are protecting your name — is that post even really from a WS United rider?

Wheelsucker

i guess i take that back, eric. don’t relax. i like where this one is going! WSU guys, its your turn to pop a chill-pill. I’m guessing you know about as much about eric as he knows about you (according to your angry claim). I seriously hope that you are joking.

Wheelsucker

he was talking about Eric ROOBERTSON. Yeah, I HATE (!) that guy. what a dick. however, Eric Robertson is all class. Easy mistake. Sometimes I don’t know which WSU guy is chopping me in a corner and sprinting in the joggers lane either. Its a confusing world out there.

Wheelsucker

Most likely Johann is always on here chirping – just like in all his races Calling everyone pack filler Never saw him podium – even cat 4

Wheelsucker

The Burrowes brothers helped fixing FBF, remember that? They are great for NYC cycling: they come out to race, get in breaks, get some results, keep a team together, etc.
But let’s keep it real: their best all-around rider cannot really climb, even in a moderately hilly race (see Bear results for the facts); their powerful sprinter, the likable and strong A. Lowe, cannot deliver when it really counts (see Somerville); but most of the rest are a bunch of squirrely-riding, hysterically-screaming horde of wannabes desperate for attention off the bike.

Wheelsucker

that has to be the gutsiest anon post ever to be posted. you really should sign that one, posthumously perhaps

Wheelsucker

That post says it all about WSU- ZERO CLASS. Makes me wonder why they even have sponsor when they so clearily are not good representation for the bike world. I always steer clear of them at the races.

Nice result Eric.

Wheelsucker

Don’t get this twisted, I like your work!
Just preview all posts before posting. Whenever I read them I imagine you screaming something incoherent at your monitor as you clack away at your keyboard

Wheelsucker

So you call 16th out of 110 starters at bear not being able to climb? And you call 24th at somerville after being caught up in a crash not delivering the goods?
And if you check you will see the day before somerville WS took 7th at the pro race in DC.
And WS also won over 16 races last year (not including Neil’s stats)
Other than the team members winning local races, Jermaine won the New Britain crit, he won the tour of basking ridge, but the team has never been respected…i wonder why, maybe because the team buys their own bikes…

Wheelsucker

So you call 16th out of 110 starters at bear not being able to climb? And you call 24th at somerville after being caught up in a crash not delivering the goods?

That is exactly not delivering the goods. Now you sound like triathletes. Your post make WSU losers.

Wheelsucker

I liked them. Fanta Fanta I wanta wanta Fanta Fanta …

I also want to know what happened to min Thor of Adler?

Wheelsucker

I wish Yoo Hoo would sponsor a team.

Imagine the cheers!

The schwag!

The team kits!

Yoo Hoo!

Wheelsucker

you are right, i have never heard of a WS United rider posting comments. I think that those guys are really nice and genuine people.

Brian Cooblall - Team United

Hey guys,

I know that this is a public forum for NY racers to post comments on their perspective and opionion on races and results but can you please leave Team United out of your negative comments.

Wheelsucker

Yeah, I love how they are trying to control negative comments after going all ballistic and stupid. Nothin screams class like that. And, “I know there is free speech, but don’t speak freely?” WFT is that?!

Wheelsucker

Isn’t Fanta a little lowbrow for the Ralpha?

One would think a chilled bottle of Ty Nant would be more apropos.

Wheelsucker

Oh did someone say chilled Ty Nant? Chin chin! I put it in my water bottles on each ride.

Wheelsucker

Dear Brian Cooblall:

We have received your request to keep “Team United” out of our negative comments. Our support team will review this request and get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patronage.

schmalz

Listen, if you are going to argue and fight with yourself, I would suggest facing a mirror, and not do it here posing as someone else.

Wheelsucker

u read it right schmalz, the 1st poster was not united, just a troll looking for a reaction…

Patrick

Can’t make it out to FBF tonight, but it looks like a perfect night for the conditions that make FBF such a great race.

Here’s why:

I just walked outside and the wind off the ocean is really strong. I had left the flag up since yesterday (I know, I know, but I forgot to take it down last night) and the wind snapped the rope off my flagpole. Strong wind at FBF = fun. Also, its very cold outside, its 55 deg right now and we have winds steady at 18mph with gusts up to…??? call it flagpole-rope-breaking-speed. Windy and cold should thin out the fields a bit.

But wait, there’s more! Weather.com shows 60% chance of rain at 7-8pm for zip code 11234. (Aviator sports’ zip code)

So here’s what it looks like to me:

55 deg+strong wind+rain= Chilly riders/frozen fingers. Pack gloves and arm/leg warmers. Embrocation is key.

Rain=Wet cement=more flats. Ride your training clinchers. Pack an extra tube if you’re riding home.

Wind+Rain+Cold+smaller fields (due to Sommerville yesterday)= near perfect breakaway conditions so stay up front and pay attention.

Good luck out there and everyone ride safe. Wish I could be there with you.

PL

One more thing. Wear your old cycling shoes and black socks tonight. Anything new or white will never be the same. FBF grime is tenacious.

Wheelsucker

shut up and train. you are a bunch of overexcited cat 4’s bitching about sandbaggers, when almost none of you are fit enough to upgrade even to category 3.

Wheelsucker

And I looked at some of the pictures of you guys “racing” around a bunch of cones in a parking lot — I’m sorry but that is LAME LAME LAME — get a real course

Wheelsucker

Have you ever raced FBF? Shut your pie hole till you have done 1-3 race there, especially one over 40 miles.

Wheelsucker

what’s the elevation gain per lap at fbf? i need to program that into my weekly training diary at a**clown.com and adjust my week’s power training accordingly. thanks.

Wheelsucker

that cone-based FBF course was just a one time thing (hopefully). the real FBF course is a real 2.3 mile circuit.

Wheelsucker

You participate in a hobby sport and people expect you to pay for your own equipment and entry fees? What is the world coming to? Turn pro or stop whining. Too many whiners in this sport believe they are entitled to free equipment, uniforms and entry fees. If it’s too expensive, ride something else besides DA, Red or Record, if that’s not beneath you. If that doesn’t work, take up a new hobby.

Wheelsucker

no one trains harder than a cat 4, who is strictly anti-doping. If he took HGH and EPO he could ride the Giro, but strictly anti-doping and goes to anti-doping websites. Local Cat 5’s on EPO, excitable Cat 4’s, go ahead and log in to Stolen Underground for more (mis)information

Eric

I guess you didn’t understand my point. Someone suggested that Neil change teams, and I’m trying to say that there’s really no reason, unless you are trying to go pro. Neil seems to like racing with us. Most of us are happy with Kissena because of the people, not because of anything else. We generally pick teams because there’s a connection on a personal level, not to try to get free gear. I don’t expect bigger perks at my level, but I would certainly be tempted if someone offered to offset travel costs to get me to races that I couldn’t afford, or wasn’t invited to. But there’s no whining from me.

The wind can be as bad as hitting a wall. At the King’s County Race this year it was 5.5-6 watts/kg in a 39×17 for me getting across the back stretch.

Wheelsucker

Pretty impressive for Jim Butler.

He was cat 5 in 2008, upgraded, won a couple of 3/4 races at Floyd.

Now he is placing in the 1/2/3 race. Way to go kid!

Butler (with one T)

Thanks for compliment, 10:26, but I was riding shoulder to shoulder with Neil in the 5’s last season and he too has amazing talent and plenty of sprint speed! He too is doing well too in the 123 field. He is another fella to look out for!

As for not racing as often, while I apologize for not getting out to as many races to give you a wheel to follow and my ass to stare at, Mr. 12:14 ,I have a full time job, school classes and a active social life as 21 year old single male to attend to. As much as I love cycling especially the competitive side of it, I can’t do it all. Everything in moderation my friend.

Wheelsucker

don’t know the guy, but good for him that he can come out and kick ass when he feels like it, and not be an obsessive freak like most of us.

Wheelsucker

He SHOULD be racing more, and if he did he’d obviously be winning more, which means he’d obviously have more upgrade points. Therefore by not racing more he’s sandbagging.

Wheelsucker

i hope that was a joke. there is no higher category for him at floyd to avoid this “sandbagging” you speak of.

Wheelsucker

5 yrs ago if you told me there were a bunch of dudes mostly over 30 riding bikes around in superhero costumes at 6am on weekends in local parks, and someone was keeping track of which one of those guys finished first (after accounting for age, experience, or both), and the other five days of the week there were people complaining publicly yet anonymously that they couldnt 1. read somewhere who finished first quickly enough, or 2. see pictures of any of those faux-superheroes, or 3. if there were (by some miracle) actual photographs of these faux-superoes that they weren’t really good enough, and still other people who really, really, perversely enjoyed looking at where various names of people they didn’t seem to know very well (if at all) finished in comparison to others and then decided to make ill-conceived comments on what those people should or should not be doing with their time, well … to be honest you probably wouldnt have gotten very far because i’d have noticed you were bat-shit crazy and kept on walking. but if i didnt, i definitely wouldve punched you right in the face.

Wheelsucker

You lost me at “superhero costumes.” Can someone please provide a translation? Babelfish doesn’t translate Flunked-Middle-School-Grammar.

Wheelsucker

perfectly cromulent sentence – never deviating from standard grammar is for stylistic simpletons.
