The weekend has evaporated into another moody Monday, so it’s time to recap the weekend’s racing action. Roger Aspholm of Westwood Velo won the 1/2/3 race at Union Grove. At Wilmingtonon on Saturday, Lisban Quintero of Foundation gets fourth, and Global Locate gets some good results with Gary Steinberg 4th and Juan Pimental 5th in the 3/4 race.
At the Tour de Parc on Sunday, Amaury Perez continues his winning ways in the 1/2/3 race, Rebecca Wellons of NEBC/Cycle Loft wins the women’s race, James Joseph of WS United wins over the Global Locate sprint twins of Juan Pimental and Gary Steinberg. Wilson wins the 35+ race. Scot Willingham of Sanchez Metro wins the 45+. Aessandro Matteucci of BVF wins the 4 race and Neil Bezdek wins the 5s race.

Hey there race fans!
It is that time again. Rockleigh starts this Thurday
with the usual two race format. Cat 1/2/3 at 6:00 and
cat 4/5 to follow. The 4/5 races DO qualify for
upgrade points! So, no excuse for not coming out,
Kuria!
We will need some help marshaling. The first week is
critical since I will not be able to be there. Of
course I am panicking and need to be sure we will be
covered for week one. So, if anyone can commit to
helping out this week I would appreciate it. Email me
back so I can sleep tonight. You do get free race
entry for marshaling. You can even give your free race
to another rider! You could sponsor someone’s racing
by simply sitting on your butt watching the
action…neat!
I’m looking forward to another successful season. Hope
to see a big turnout!

Rebecca Wellons won the women’s race out of a break and went right to the start line for the men’s 123. She’s strong.
FIRST!!!!!!!
Strong enough to sit on the back all day…..
You’re not making dumbass comments about Rebecca Wellons’ abilities are you? When one of the top CX racers in the Nation graces one of our local races with her presence, we should at least pretend to have some class. If you have no class, just keep your mouth shut. That way she might not realize what slugs we have around here. Maybe she’ll come back and race here again. Our local scene can only benefit from more National caliber riders racing with us.
And thanks CI for another great race.
first
Can’t wait for whatever women to DOUBLE UP by sitting at the back of the men’s race, slogging around in to big a gear, too slowly accelerating out of the turns, and then blogging about how she thought it was slow, and how she prolly woulda beat a bunch of the men in the sprint if she had been up there.
Rebecca Wellons is awesome!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MlT3tBYs588
This is a classless website, would you expect anything else from anyone around here?
Don’t start giving props for pack fill. Regardless of CX prowess (thats not in question here) she sat in, ALL DAY.
I guess it represents progress that women are getting bashed all the time on this site now. Or….is it?
Wilson did the masters race, and then did the 1,2,3. As did Latanzi, and Sommerville, and I’m sure others. No props to them? Or are you only giving calling her out cause shes a woman? is this the Title IX thread?
i actually found myself near her once during the race… but when i saw the front of the pack through the park on the other side of the course i decided i needed to move up.
hahaha.
i don’t think anyone is bashing her… i think they are bashing the cheerleader who pom-pommed her ride at the back of the pack. and further bashing the person who suggests that her exploits on the women’s cx circuit (who knew such a thing existed) deserve added credit. like – last place in the 1/2/3 men’s field is like a 10th place in dog years or something.
exactly.
Most of the morons here can’t do much more than sit in during a 1/2/3 race of any difficulty, if even that.
You guys are all a bunch of whiny jerks….! Life, get one. There, I said it.
Wilson is a sandbagger.
haha
so is wellons. she should have just done the 1/2/3 and not the women’s race.
capala
Top 5s at Delaware and Tour de Parc. Good job.
the ladies.
but if wellons did only the 1,2,3, she woulda lost money…….
life’s a garden.
I’m not quite sure can call a cat 1 a sandbagger. Thats like calling Pros that do Pro/1 races sandbaggers cause they always win. He is over 30 after all, no reason he can’t race a masters race. Look at Roger A. Dude thrashes in the masters races and no one calls him a sandbagger. I guess he’s different…
I’m not quite sure anyone posting on here should be giving advice about getting a life….pot…kettle….black.
If we refer to Global Lactate as Global Lactate, even though they aren’t Global?
Actually, they’re quite global. There’s good chance if you have a GPS their chip is inside there.
Roger A is a sandbagger too.
…..is hot.
i agree. made me less miserable yesterday in the cold and rain.
Empire and Eugene B. @ tour of Arkansas with Empire netting a decent stage result + throwing down a few break attempts!
thanks for the update eugene…..
So Cat 3s and 4s have to upgrade or “race up” or risk being called a sandbagger, but a Cat 1 can do any race he wants and it’s ok?
It’s a big risk. Tread cautiously. You do NOT wanna get cought on the wrong side of that one.
My ultimate cylcing goal is to be called a sandbagger and a doper. Those are the ultimate compliments around here.
hahaha
Well, a cat one can’t do any race he/she pleases, usually its a 1/2/3 or some sort of combination. I have no problems with 1’s racing masters races, if they are masters.
There is a difference between racing a masters race before the 1/2/3, and NEVER racing a 1,2,3 as a cat 3 even though you win 95% of the time. THAT is sandbagging. James Joseph is a prime example. I’ve seen him attempt the 1,2,3 at floyd a few times, not pretty.
Not sure why USA cycling does not upgrade some of these old timers. They only do crits so racing in the Pro1-3s is not a big deal. Its not like they are not forced to race 90 mile RRs with the young Cat1s. Some of the Global guys should upgrade as well. For the racing they do (Park races and Crits) they have tons of points and would be fine in Pro1-3. But then again they would not be in the top 5 every race….
all if ya 🙂
none of you clowns race or have any clue of this sport on the amateur lever.
Go back from whence you’ve come losers!
masters is cat 1-4 so it doesn’t really matter what cat they’re in. if someone is over 35 & wants to race masters, they can do masters. figure out a way to beat the geezers, don’t whine about it.
why do you want them out of the 3’s so badly? so you can get upgrade points? if you can’t beat them you aren’t going to get jack chit racing at the next level.
Just race your bike. as you so accurately described them – they are OLD TIMERS who can still rock on the cat 3 level. leave them be and get your not so old ass out training so you can beat them.
fucking whining bitches.
all you need is 10 top 10 finishes as a cat 4 to upgrade to a cat 3!!!
your category is a SLUSH FUND for mediocrity. you have zero to complain about when the “best of the rest” happens to be 45 and still kickin it.
long live jerry martineZ
Slaughtered
You think these old timers should be upgraded cause crits aren’t that hard? Have you raced a legit crit before? I highly doubt these old timers would last, or else they would probably be doing it if it wasnt that hard. get with it. 3/4 crits are easy. parade day. Just stick around after the race while you’re cooling down on your trainer like a jerkoff and time a lap in the P 1/2 race, versus your fastest lap time. Then bitch and moan.
some of those guys are doing the master’s race, the 3 race, and then sitting on the back of the 1,2,3 race.
who did all 3 yesterday?
Again, are we giving props to people that can sit at the back of a pack all day?
The list of cat 3 masters that would and can do all three of those races is extremely short, and probably includes a bunch of 2s that downgraded at some point.
hey phil ligget, only one went, and at least he COULD go!
aw too bad… you’re a cat 5! i don’t think they even had a race for you guys.
In defense of Mr. J Joseph–Sand bagger not-First of all He’s 50 years old & has been racing and winning on his bike long before you came along. Check his resume-it speaks for itself. You should be so lucky to rub elbows let alone race your bike with him. He is not just good at the sprint- He is one of the fastest men to ever sprint a bike. Very few Cat 1s or 2s can beat him heads up at his age. He’s the reason why you’lljust have to get better at the game and spend less time bitchin.-Question? why do you punk bitches POST without saying who you are
“Very few Cat 1s or 2s can beat him heads up at his age.”
Wasn’t the point that he shouldn’t be racing with the threes?
“Very few Cat 1s or 2s can beat him heads up at his age.”
but he races as a 3.
That is what sandbagger means!
NO SHIT dude. SHUT UP and GO DO SOMETHING.

class is in session: team work, tactics, better than a raw egg bloody mary to clear your head…
Why is it always the guys who lose to James in a sprint in a race come up with these stupid sandbagger remarks? Do u think he went to the Olympic as a Cat 3 Stupid? He’s 50 years old what else does the man have to prove he’s been a National champion and he’s been to the Olympics. Now when your writing these stupid post about the man think to yourself have I EVER been to the Nationals and WON,or better yet have I been Selected to Go to the Olympic to Compete. Come on give it a break already season after season its the same Sandbagging Comments its Tired now.
i’m pretty sure usa cycling has no intention of (re)upgrading a 50 year old to cat 2 simply because a bunch of whiny brats can’t beat him.
let me say this very clearly so you understand. YOU AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN THAT RACE SO YOU DON’T DESERVE IT.
if you think things are “unfair” now they just get worse as a cat 2.
again, shut up.
lastly – show some respect. why don’t you go talk to the guy maybe he will bestow some knowledge on your sorry ass.
is what road racing is all about. if you can’t beat them, joing them. don’t like that fact? go race mountain bikes.
JJ interview?
for what it’s worth, JJ is very generous sharing his knowledge and technique if you ever run into him in the park…almost ridiculously so in my case since I couldn’t sprint my way out of a paper bag. But whatever. Like an earlier poster said, talk to the guy before hating on him.
and if you don’t want him to beat you in a sprint, break away. He won’t go with you.
The “Tuesday night world championships” at Floyd Bennett Field continues tonight 5/20/08.

JJ interview? Isn’t he a cat 3?
come on guys. We don’t want to get tips from a cat 3.
Everyone in the top five Wantagh IIIs was over 40.
Patrick is about 100.
You see the problem with JJ beating 1s and 2s in a heads up sprint, is that you actually have to make it to the final 300 meters to do such, and well, he can’t anymore. He is old, and was good a long time ago. I guess you 3s should just make your races harder and drop him. or perhaps, don’t let the race come down to a group sprint?
USAC will never upgrade him. live with it. you could always race the 1/2/3 race…..
I sense a distinct difference between some of these posts. Say the Iron Riders angry man post and everyone else. Why so serious?
A JJ interview would be good! We want to know what keeps him ticking. He’s earned his notoriety.
Schmalz, you’ve been notified.
After all the trashing on this site, I’d be interested in hearing from the man as well.
JAYJAY!
74th!!!
“Everyone in the top five Wantagh IIIs was over 40.”
really? how about 5th? u-25 development?
and I don’t feel like driving anywhere.
I smell Gimbels…Running reds, chubby dudes, Colnagos, hot dogs, squirrels…
Did I miss anything?
Greg Olsen is 40
I thought Tour de Parc in the P12s was huge fun. I am terrible at crits, really terrible at crits in the rain, but the peloton actually went pretty slow through that turn. Made for a fun, safe day… Very fast course, good for a TTist — I tried several times attacking but nothing stuck… I tried again near the end but Robert Lattanzi blew by me like I was standing still… Pretty impressive as he had a heavy ride in the previous race… The NYC peloton in my opinion is some of the toughest competition in the region, very different than PA or CT as the pace is very high and it’s much harder getting away… My two cents as it continues to rain…
“The NYC peloton in my opinion is some of the toughest competition in the region”
Too bad we’re too busy self hating and flaming ourselves.
Man up bitch asses.
WE HAVE TO STOP HATING AND UNITE AGAINST THE REAL ENEMIES: PA, CT, MA AND VT
Those Jersey guys don’t piss you off?
i didn’t want to offend schmalz
or the 9w cops
This should be an argument. Almost everyone here has varying levels of anger which is evident in the posts.
Some like to anger angrier posters (ie cranky vs. jft).
Are all racers angry people?
Must you be angry to race?
BTW – I hate you all!
for the riders in the 4 field at tour de parc who criticized another rider to his face after the race instead of on this board. a bit more classy.
What Happened?
he probably didn’t move over when he said ON YOUR LEFT……
… slowing
Just saw on Bikereg that the kid won again at the Can-Am Juniors Race in Jersey. Congrats Filip.
Is it me or does everyone have some shit to talk. Can’t everyone race without talking about lines and so on.
I love it when whatever dude has all this advice but is a Cat 4. That’s an oxymoron…
It’s up to you to protect you front wheel.
I can’t wait until I upgrade..
Less infighting on the road and faster as a group on climbs but still pretty much the same. I prefer the Pro1-3s where I sit on the back and enjoy the ride with alot less shit talk.
pace was high. avg speed per my ptap was 27 with a top speed of 39mph in the sprint… considering we came to a near stop once every mile that is a pretty fast race.
if that race was 15-20 miles further a break would have a better shot of sticking. the closest anything got to staying away was with 5 laps to go a break got up the road and had a decent gap. most everyone else was looking at each other waiting for the sprint. sommerville sent 3 guys to the front and sir dave himself put in a 30mph pull for most of a lap and brought it back.
Is FBF always held, rain or shine?
just like most other bike races. no lightening though.
Tonights race is cancelled due to unsafe course conditions. Racing will resume next weekend.
Thanks,
David Sommerville.
Great….I’m already out here. I guess I’ll just do some laps.
will there be another make-up race? some guys prepaid..
The cancellation was made after checking out the course at 430….deal.
doubtful. its 15 bucks, you really prepaid?
I’m gonna go play kickball at Aviator…who’s with me??
all kickball cancelled at Aviator.
James Joseph is better at kickball.
Race is postponed til tomorrow at 5:45 AM. Please be on time.
HAH!H!H!H!!HAAHAA
What the hell FBF is Canceled?
I remembered when WE used to walk 5 miles in the rain barefoot just to go and race in the park. and now it gets canceled for just a little rain? just kidding Charlie and David.again just kidding
what am I going to do now on a Tuesday rainy night.I think I have to spent time talking with the wifie.
here take a look at this. here 2 minutes
I never get back
ps Good call on the race Charlie and David.better safe then sorry……… and I mean that
thanks see you next week

SAFETY- preventing people from inhaling birdshit laden water and developing bacterial infections in their lungs as a result of breathing for their lives while racing around an old airfield.
FILIP-COULD be a national junior champ, IF he mans up and starts really, and I mean really racing hard in cat123 races. try to get in breakaways, race as hard as you can. THEN you will become national level.
filip doesn’t go to nationals unfortunately
i hear theres bird shit in puddles on all the junior nats courses.
you’re bitching about bird shit, though you race around central park inhaling horse shit?
By the time Phillip gets his shit together and starts racing hard races, he’s gonna be too old to be jr nat champ. too late, the curve is too steep to just jump in. Maybe under 23, and even that’s a big maybe.
