Hangover 5/16/2011

Run for your life!

Schmalz is at Hersheypark, which, judging by their website, is some kind of sanctuary for gigantic human/chocolate mutants. I’ll be your hangover host while he attempts to escape that post apocalyptic wasteland while those chocolate mutants hunt him seeking revenge for their fallen brethren.

Gavin Robertson won the 123 race at Saturday’s Lucarelli and Castaldi Cup. Ryan McGarrity won the 4 race, Randhy Rodriguez the 5 race. Full results here.

Ken Lundgren won the Upper Frehold TT, nipping Roger Aspholm by a second. Fabienne Gerard won the women’s. Full results here.

Ben Noble won Bear 4’s in what sounded like bibilical conditions. Fill us in on the other races please.

Stomach of Anger has a very nice memorial shirt for Wouter Weylandt, proceeds go to his family.

Bear has just had a string of bad luck the last few years, between not having enough park police available for a 9/11 race, to road closures at key points along the race route – all circumstances well out of the control of the promoter. I’m sure the revised course and weather may have had a lot to do with the number of “no-shows” yesterday, which was unfortunate, since there were plenty of people on wait lists. All-in-all, it still turned out to be a competitive, well-run event, with a selective course. If the state could just get the park infrastructure in some state of repair so the traditional “climb in the woods” course loop could be used, with the full range of fields able to be offered, you’d see some much better registration and attendance.

That fog during the afternoon races yesterday was something else, though…

Slow go

Your comments about the park are exactly what the concern is. For almost 4 years now the race has been altered negatively or cancelled in the spring and or fall. Its not going away because the promoter or racers dont want it. It appears to be possibly close to a demise due to the park conditions and lack of external support.

confusios

for the bear results, what does P&P mean in the time column? and why so many DNF’s in the Cat 4 field, was there a crash or something?

naive

Sorry if this is elementary, but how is P&P different from getting a DNF? Where these riders actually pulled by a race official (as opposed to voluntarily DNF’ing due to fatigue/mechanical), like lapped riders in a crit?

Dieter Drake’s attempt to duplicate his Battenkill race in Michigan ended with 175 racers showing for the Tour of Washtenaw. When only 25 were registered 3 weeks before the race, Dieter reduced the entry fee from $80 to $50. An attempt to couple the road race with a crit was a failure asthe crit was cancelled with 0 people having registered.

Jelle Fork

That’s not a failure. That’s a start.

Anything worthwhile starts somewhere and builds. Battenkill had a few hundred the first year. And then proceeded to double every year. Catskills had even less the first year.

Slow go

Agree with below about a slow increased build of registered racers. Catskills year 1 was a blast but the fields were small due to it being new and the weekend after Green Mountain i believe. Its now one of the toughest, best located in terms of a venue with nices places to eat, stay and things to do, and the attendance goes up every year similar to Battenkill. Location Location Location. I would say that Dieter should stick with the NEast racing.

Dropout

I sucked 35+ wheels all race and didn’t finish in the top ten overall. However, since the cat 3s prize money is almost twice that of the 35+s I will probably get more money than the person who won the overall race. CRCA – I like the way you think. 35+ riders – thanks for the tow suckers.
