I know a guy who shall remain nameless who ate a turkey sandwhich in the middle of the GMSR road race a few years ago. He later cracked due to indigestion. It was pretty funny.

food

I saw Dave Mann of the Coors Light pro team (analagous to roughly Health Net today in terms of level) easting what looked like a burrito or a giant egg roll in a stage of the Killington stage race.

And there is legend about my old coach John Allis doing something extreme before the Montreal to Quebec City race one time in the 1970s. A bunch of his teammates and competition were pretty into vegetarianism and he believed meat was important. The most mellow version of the story is that he had steak for breakfast. The most extreme version was that it was raw, and he ate it on the start line. There are intermediate versions as well — raw a few hours before, cooked on the line, etc.

I don’t know which version is true, but one is. And he won the race.

H E L L O

DID YALL KNOW THAT JOE PAPP IS TESTIFYING FOR THE PROSECUTION AGAINST FLOYD LANDIS AS TO THE EFFECTS OF TESTOSTERONE WHICH HE ADMITS USING?

Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

Ham and cheese sandwiches are where it is at. I thought it was strawberry-milkshake pop tarts. Stupid,Stupid.

disciple fo coach J

Hey, lay off Coach L! Coach J helped me out a lot for the bear, but we too made some mistakes. Mistakes were made. We had some setbacks.

The ham and cheese really does work though. But for us, it’s got to be swiss. Or Danish really. Like Jarlsberg. And here is why I respect coaches like L and J so much. One of coach J’s riders was worried about her figure and started using Jarlsberg LITE. Yes. And Coach J supported her. "The best coaches learn from their athletes" he said. I am sure coach L has a similar saying. Coach P and Coach B too.

So we were ready for Bear with our ham (good stuff, not Thumann’s) and Jarlsberg Lite. But the big mistake was the mayo. You can use mayo when it’s cold, and it seemed pretty cool when we got there. But it warmed up quite a lot by the second lap, and when that happens you have to have mustard. Which we didn’t. Coach J told us to always be ready with mustard, but I wasn’t. That was my mistake.

I think there were a couple of Coach L’s riders in my group at the race – remember guys. I was the rider on the blue Trek who said "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?"

Race strategy

If you want to be in the photo, just ride at the front for the entire race and slow way down when you see marco or anyone with a camera.

Eugene

Coach L has to be a joke– and it’s a really good one. But there are some times when I think it’s too good to be a joke. This person has been in character (without flaw) for a long time, and some of the responses seem too consistently bizarre to be made up. I’m not sure what to think, but right now I think it’s a class-A put on.

..hey Guys, remember when I won that race?

Mengoni homegirl

That’s to bad Marty from mengoni had his chain broken. I was hoping he would break the top 10, he’s been riding well this season, At least Jared placed 19th from mengoni, the guy doesn’t even look like a climber!%?

is this a joke?

"but I like to get a little ham and cheese sandwich in early on in the race – but the pace in the 3’s and 4’s races was so high that it was hard to digest the sandwiches. Lesson learned."

I’ve heard of that for riders doing 4+ hours of racing day after day, where in some ways they are eating for recovery on the bike. But in a one-day 4 hour race? Odd.

And in a 2.5 hour race? Definitely wrong. Coach L, get a clue. Unless you are pulling our legs.

Anonymous

Excellent Top Excuses For Coach L Rider Failures:

1. Weighed down by uneaten ham sandwiches. Nice. My personal fav. Dont know what hes thinking – I made a nice pasta with ragu sauce on the back stretch with my little pocket stove and all was good in my tummy.
2. The big ring attacks around the hairpin didnt work. All that talk about downshifting before the turn – dont listen – you are supposed to attack in the big ring up that 10 pct grade!
3. The wind was so strong that they couldnt push through with a 23. Um, did I miss the hurricane?
4. The riders can climb well enough or apply enough power to, uh, win the race. Thats why Bear Mtn is the local race of truth – it aint a hill climb and it aint a pure sprint. If the riders cant hack it, they just arent strong yet. Period.

Thanks for playing Coach L. Come back next year. Or not, since you seem to "channel" better from the comfort of your living room or whatever.

Coach L

Hey all.
Not here to self promote or anything like that but heard of an interest in our performance at Bear Mountain. We don’t disclose who our riders are or how each of them did and I wasn’t at the race but my early analysis leads me to believe it didn’t go as well as expected. The range of mistakes and miscalculations was pretty wide and for that, I am partially responsible. I’ve gone so far as to rebate some of my client’s coaching fees which is something not may coaches do. This may change with Junior goes off to college in the Fall, but for now I’m happy to do it.

Some of the mistakes were in equipment choice. I wasn’t expecting the winds to be what they were based on what I saw on Weather.com (not a plug) and some of my guys had too big a gear. You really need a 25 to do well on that course and most of my guys had a 23 and 1 even had (gulp) a 21 cog. Its not so much for the 39×25 combination but to be able to go 53 (or 52) x 23 out of the hairpin at the bottom of the course. At least this is what I’ve been told by my guys. We also messed up the feeding sequence of carbs and protein. I know its old school, but I like to get a little ham and cheese sandwich in early on in the race – but the pace in the 3’s and 4’s races was so high that it was hard to digest the sandwiches. Lesson learned. I’m not trying to make excuses here, and I know I’m sharing more than I usually share about my techniques, but I really feel like I owe you guys after what happened last week.
Anyway, the other tricky part about the race is that it suits an in between rider – someone who can ride the flats and the hills, and I train most of my guys (and girls) to be specialists. Its really frustrating when the hill on the back side doesn’t shake things up much with the climbers and the finish hill doesn’t seperate the power guys (and girls). Anyway, some lessons were learned and we’re licking our wounds this week, just getting ready for the rest of the season.
Thanks for inviting me back into the discussion. It means a lot to me.
Coach L

How did Coach L's riders do?

And did anyone ask them what it’s like to be advised by a descendent of Charlemagne?

schmalz

Upton – that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read, I actually lost IQ points by reading that…

Upton

He should not discrace the Navigators Colors in races like Bear by failing to race into the top 10. Its like saying you race for CSC and then getting your ass kicked at a regional event by a local Cat 2. He has no business racing under Navigators Colors.

Chris M

Yeah, thanks for the clarification, ’cause we never heard of Craig Upton around these parts.

Oh! Sarcasm again. Sorry.

Anonymous

Craig Upton is not on the Navigators Pro Roster. I guess he is a semi-pro and only races local events and not in Belgium or the big US races.

Navigators

What happened to the Lone Navigators guy in the Pro1/2? Suprising he was not even in the top 20?

Mr.60

In Bilbao we say ‘tu tia en bolas’ which translates to ‘your topless aunt.’
Take that, Schmalz.

Gavi

I went through river road on friday before bear mt and had to climb over the landslide for about 25 min. It was half way between alpine and englewood.

like a dumbasx I pinned my number wrong at Bear

and they still picked me 🙂

Will do better next time.

Anonymous

Its ok 495 at least you know that you exist, and that you werent last! And if you fell down you likely would have made some noise even if no one was around to hear you. When you break the top 70 you will likely see your result next time.

Bear results

I was dropped, then I went home. Why aren’t I in the results? Where’s my picture? I depend on nyvelocity for self assurance, and you guys are failing to fill the void in my life.

Marco please?

We can’t take it anymore. We want to see our sorry asses cross the line. C’mon man, where are the pics?

Bib 495

Huh? I was expecting my result to appear out of the woodwork but it never did materialize. We finished the race about 35 minutes behind the cat4 winner. I was on the wheel of another cat4 finisher – we sprinted for ‘not last’ place and then plenty of riders came in behind us. My guess is that neither one of us is listed in the results. Oh well.

Chris M

Mitch is still mean. Grumpy too. Mitch, maybe think of a better pseudonym and then add some sort of wit to your negativity so its entertaining at least.

Eugene

River Road–
Yesterday, I didn’t see the slide, but there’s a sign at the entrance prohibiting travel between Englewood and Alpine.

TS

Right…This is the same Zmolik that got 4th at Jiminy and has had a record of stellar results for several years in a row. And, on top of that, is a genuinely nice guy? Most undeserving of any hate.

Results

There will be some corrections made to the results mostly because the missing riders will appear out of the woodwork. Once JD lets me know that everything is good to go we’ll send a fresh copy to BikeReg and CRCA.

Another weekend, another hangover. I think the Adler jokes are funny. Riding at the front of the race and finishing at the back or middle isn’t smart or good. You win or lose. They lost.

Results Error

How come on bikereg.com Kevin Lacombe finished 3rd and here he is DSQ? Who has the right results?

Anonymous

He’s 39. I was very good. I bet he was setting up Lisbon too. So he still got 5th even with setting up a teammate. Very good.

yellow line pic

I think that’s masters near the right side of the road and 3s near the yellow line. I don’t recognize the guy over the yellow line but think he’s a 3 or 4 and not a master.

Also, Zmolik is a totally nice guy. Good rider too. And I’m not on Empire.

We could make it a local tradition since we’re already well regarded by outta town racers.

olsen also let loose with some serious profanity on the line. but the bunch sprint did look a little hairy.

Anonymous

The dick that finished third in the Masters attacked at least 3 times over the yellow line during the course of the race. So if their is no fall race you know who to blame.

CRCA in P/1/2

4 CRCA riders in top 8 in Pro/1/2. That hasn’t happened in a long time , if ever. Great even if Lisban doesn’t do club races and Gavi’s moving on.

re: cccc

only cat 3 pussies cry about guys from other states "Sandbagging" and beating them. if you want to race the same pudgy fools week after week without the "threat" of an outsider dashing your big race dreams than stick to CRCA – where intramural racing seems to be the predominant focus.

i don’t hear any cat 2 guys crying because they have to race with cat 1 and pro riders every week. pretty sure whoever it is you are referring to has 2 arms and 2 legs just like you. ride harder, eat less and shut up.

O'Malley

Great race, well deserved to the Hoffman/Prinsloo duo who attacked at the BEST moment of the race.

Unfortunately I had little left in the tank. There’s always FALL.

Congrats to Mecray for a well deserved #3, great sprint and Tony Slokar, good JOB!!!

Chris M

If I had won the Cat 4 race Im not at all sure I could be in full control of my utterings, quite frankly! Congrats to Prinsloo and Hoffman for a well timed and executed attack and a fine finish to a good clean race. Great day, no crashes that I know of in our field, and nice cooperation by all.

Alan and team: thanks for an A+ race

The whole race was superbly run from start to finish.
Great work.

-Everyman McPackfill

Cat 4

The placings list continues after #57 – 70 guys finished and there were certainly some mechanicals but most of the rest just dropped out after being dropped by the field. Not a waste at all to start 100 guys.

Alex R

Royal Potty does not have a potty mouth. I’ve ridden with him on numerous occasions and he never used foul language.

Juniors

2nd fastest average speed of all the fields. Pro 12 was faster. Was only 42 miles but with gear restrictions etc.

another thing about Harriman

I was looking at the junior pics from Mr. Sullivan and was reminded that the Bear has one of the best finishing stretches around. Dead straight, gets wider than the precdeing road, and one way. With grass on the side if there is a serious problem. It’s also good to reward fast legs at the end of such a grinding course.

Cat 4 Redux

2006 Spring Cat 4 won by Greg Olsen 2:37, 2007 Spring won by Stoffel 2:29.
This is a great reflection of the depth of ‘everyman’ racing in the region.

CCCC

everyone in the 1/2 field saw the cat 3. break riding in the field at jiminy. enough said. sandbagging the 3’s on a CT based team, then chirping about your results on NY Velocity is a little wierd, no?

CCC

Stop the CCC hating they are a great team and nice guys. I am not on CCC either. Most teams would love to have there results and allegations of cheating at Jiminy with no proof is just classless!

Cat 4 in Green

The rider was from Asphalt Green. Not sure what is deal was. Sure he was strong but shut the hell up we don’t want to hear about your running. If it’s not fast enough for you just ride off the front and win the race.

CCCC

You didn’t win either and your 2nd place last week at Jiminy was a result of your break sitting in with the 1,2 field.

CCCC

those guys usually pat themselves on thier backs by now after a good ride… guess they didn’t do so well at da bear.

To the DQ guy in Cat 4 race

Towards the end of the second lap…
Some guy in a blueish kit starts riding up the leading field across the yellow line "I am not racing, I am not in the race" and then he proceeds to ride along(still on the other side of the yellow line) to give a rider in the race(#437???) with the same blueish a kit a bottle of drink. Pretty stupid move, especially when the official car is RIGHT behind you.

The whole peloton heard the official announce loudly the the rider who received the bottle was "DQ".

The motherfxxxxx kept riding despite many riders insisting that he leave the field…

He continues to ride, and the group descend toward the hairpin turn into the 3rd lap, he drops the water bottle(accidently, I hope hope)! The bottle breaks and I am about 5 yrds behind him going close to 40 miles an hour…I pass him at the turn and ask him to leave the peloton, but no he conitued to ride. Whoever you are, and I hope you are reading this, you suck, I am glad I finishd ahead of a DQ rider.

Our most trafficked 24 hours is when Andy and I strip to the waist and battle in mustard for NYVC employee of the year.

Take it easy content-hungry fiend. I think Marco likely has shots since I saw him there. Results take time to complete – remember the probs of last fall? should be faster than that I assume. Im not sure they actually got podium shots though – never saw the podium setup post race.

what i want to know...

In the 4 race, who the hell was that guy in the plain green jersey, riding a Specialized with Lighweight wheels? He took a few ridiculous pulls, and kept telling everyone that he was just "on a training day" and "was going for an hour run afterwards."

Anonymous

the biggest race of the year; no pics, no content, no rumors/interviews, no content really whatsoever for your most heavily trafficked 24 hours, weak guys, truly weak

To Adler Hater

Not sure why you feel the need to single out the team’s performance, but they were certainly "there" and in fact rode the front of most of the race, including the constant presence of O’Malley at front as always, help from Collins at front on several of the climbs, and a monster attack (however misguided and ill fated) by Witt on climb 3. So they didnt win the race – did you? I think not.
PS – I dont ride for Adler.

Hmmm

Nice. Does "Mother-F…" actually mean "Sweet! I won!" in some other language, and what language would that be?

NYVC editor

The promoter promised he would send the results as soon as he can, we will post them right away.

gimme a break

"he yelled out a word in a foreign language that sounded a lot like an impolite english word"

He clearly yelled out "mother fucker" — real classy.

das bear

does anyone know where we might be able to procure the results? after a long, painful day, I just want to see my name in print ya know?

Not Bear, further afield

Congrats to other New York City racers with strong performances in national level competition this week.

Will Riffelmacher 14th overall in the cat 1/2 Joe Martin stage race in Arkansas.

Congrats also go out to Gabriel Lloyd for a strong performance at collegiate nationals in Kansas. 22nd in the D1 omninium (crit, rr, TTT) against a strong field. Also to his teammate Margaret Shirley who earned third place in the women’s road race and 8th overall for the weekend.

Adler no where to be found. Bear is very painful. So in other words, Adler rode a smart race.

adler was no where to be found

where were they yesterday? chance to make hay but no hay made. show when the prize is on the table.
branchbrook small potatoes compared to Bear.

Alex R

Royal Potty was strong. He was at the front the entire race. Very few breaks were attempted. After the last hill, he and another rider took off and came in ahead of a group of about 15 chasers. There was a small controversy because when Royal Potty came across the line he yelled out a word in a foreign language that sounded a lot like an impolite english word. All the officials at the stand heard him and they were not happy. There was some talk of a fine, when Royal explained himself, there were no sanctions. He raced a smart race and was obviously the strongest rider yesterday.
