Hangover 5/12/2008

Section head text.

The mighty Bear Mountain Race has come and gone for another year. That soft sound you hear is the noise made by coaches’ email as they float through the tubes of the internet to their charges, informing them to move the hands on the clock of their annual plan from “peak” to “recover”.

Meanwhile at Bear, Matthew Johnson of Empire won the Pro-1-2 race, ahead of two EVA-Devinci racers. In the 1-2-3 women’s race, Beth Miller of North Atlantic-Velo/Classbook.com won. Filip Capala won the junior’s race, keeping his roll going. Dan Hoffman of Westwood won the 3 race. In the 35+ race, Ciaran Mangan of CCB/Volkswagon edged out David Taylor of CRCA/Blue Ribbon Translations.com. In the 4 race, Andrew Walsh won, with Colin Prensky of Sanchez Metro 3rd. And in the Cat 4 women’s race Debra Kilmon of Comedy Central-Sids wins with Alejandra Madrinan of CRCA 2nd and Corinne Karmiel of NYVelocoty 3rd.

Results are here.

No word of the results from Prospect Park on Saturday, as Bear has dominated the news today – if you won the race, feel free to write a glowing report about yourself – disguised as an independent observer, of course.

Glad I stayed home and rode an easy 4 hours instead. I would have been dropped on the first climb if they were doing 400watts for 12minutes plus. If this is true it shows just how strong some of the 3s are. Hoffman – congrats you might be the newest “sandbagger” (LOL) on the WWV team won Bear and Battenkill – wow. Also, Gentile is having a nice spring (Top 5 in Bear and Jiminy and top 10 at Battenkill). Suprising so many crashes in the 3s. In the end there are only about 20 guys at the start of each field with a shot to win so I guess the rest just go crazy to stay with the front. For the Pro1-3 women, Beth Miller is a force.

See you at Bear in the fall if it happens this year.

jaykaybee

SouthAfrica.net rider who had number 508 in the Bear Mountain race. I have your jersey. I e-mailed info@teamsouthafrica.net, so you can respond to me outside of this public bulletin board. #508, you have our demands now pay the ransom or jersey the dies! . . . Just kidding.

Anonymous

Cat 3 and could not hold 400watts each time up the first climb each lap…

Not sure what these Cat 3s doing but if the numbers are true then I suspect only about 5% of the field hung at the front…

in the pack

I weigh 174 pounds. The 10 minutes starting from the roundabout, in the pack, was 330w average, 349 normalized.

526

Why don’t we do away with road races altogether and just get together in a big auditorium and slug it out on calibrated watt crunching ergs? Or just start indoor rowing. Watts, swattz.

Anonymous

Just south of 170 pounds, climb = 320 watts/340ish normalized. Cat 4 = about 280/300. Don’t believe the hype.

Anonymous

Anyone should be able to ride 10 mins at 350 – 400 watts in the first 15 mins of a race. Especially uphill. The true measure of fitness is who can do that 3 hours into the race.

Anonymous

not posted to impress, just inform. If I wanted to impress you, I would have posted the number of calories I was able to consume during the remainder of the day.

closepin

Hoffman is a very strong rider and his results are well deserved. He and the Wendy’s guy were by far the best in that race. Anyone who has ridden behind him though knows that he has a distinked advantage over the rest of the field.

MH

It’s the day after one of the best races around, where we had perfect weather, big strong fields, a terrific course, and great racing. And all anybody wants to talk about is their watts? For one thing it’s meaningless unless you’re comparing your output to that of other riders who weigh exactly the same as you do, and on exactly the same part of the course. But what would that tell you anyway? Power meters are a training tool. The point of training is to do well in races. The measure of success in races is results, not watts. In basketball when a player misses the winning shot at the end of a game, he doesn’t start analyzing his .568 shooting percentage and talking about how he wants to increase it to .623 next time.

Anonymous

SRM and CycleOps are laughing all the way to the bank! You can’t say “Dude, my heart beat 450 times in that interval!” They’re plucking your type A personality heart strings. When conducting “field testing” you are supposed to use the same course, the same warm up, and the same pre-test meal. I guess a watt isn’t always a watt after all.

schmalz

I don’t know about you guys, but I can read about wattages all day! Please also include:
Your grocery shopping lists
A list of all the clothing in your closets (cross referenced according to color and pattern – with a separate index for argyle, please)
A list of all your dead pet’s names (ranked according to cuddliness)
Descriptions of the past week’s breakfast (with weights included)
Haikus about your favorite smells

Anonymous

Must be a Cat 2 by now. Also, Austin of Farm Team and Ricky G of Colavita are great riders. Ones to watch in the future.

Anonymous

Adler had even odds that they would get someone in the top ten in the Cat 3 (10 starters out of 100). They really didn’t have it yesterday.

Anonymous

I love the peloton east recaps of these guys. How they are dissapointed with there top 15 place and should not have done that solo lap off the front or big ring Tiorati – please. Must be tough to be so strong and not always be in the top 5… They need to tone it down a bit.

Anonymous

its nice of them to let people read their personal training diaries. if you don’t like it – don’t look.

Anonymous

Would to see him on a real team with support. Would be deadly if he was saving himself for sprints and had more team support during the races.

cat nothing

What does it mean when you move from back to front every time up tiorati, but end up in back everywhere else?

Anonymous

Not to mention – he’s on Jr gears. When he gets the nod to go 54/39 or whatever he chooses – game over!

Anonymous

Are really not that big of a disadvantage, except in a downhill sprint. 52×14 @ 130 rpm = 37 mph. For some reason guys think they need to grind it out in the 53×11 for a sprint when, really, the 120-140 rpm range is more optimal. Sometimes I wonder if senior riders should do a couple of races with junior gears to learn a few things…

Anonymous

should have his pick of the litter for a team now. nice work on staying undetected and killing it at the finish.

Anonymous

you mean a downhill sprint…like Bear Mtn? I gotta say the 11 really helps vs the 12 on that grade – and the 14 would kinda suck. Thanks though!

Dude

Big thanks to Mike Green for all his efforts in making this a great race. This went off without a hitch. Also thanks to Alan Atwood and Wendy Nickerson and all the officials. Great job.

jft

it’s hard to spin fast at the end of a race like harriman, and junior gears would be a handicap there

a guy in my team once outsprinted Kevin Mohahan for about 7th place in the p-1-2 there once, and he said it was completely because he had an 11 and Mono didn’t

Not saying that everyone needs an 11, but just that if ever there was a race where a relatively bigger gear is important, bear is it

Anonymous

I was implicitly agreeing that it would suck for the sprint at Harriman, but I believe most of the juniors raced at Harriman in the junior field so they were all equally handicapped. Most races don’t have a finish like Harriman though, so I’m just saying that it usually is not a handicap.

Anonymous

I dunno “Jr Gears”. I think Filip will be markedly faster with normal gears. Noticeably faster than you think. I see’em in the park riding guys off his wheel daily. His legs look like cartoon blurs.
Not only Filip but also Lewis Almonte will be pretty much unstoppable locally.

Anonymous

Phillip will be good. Last time I looked at louis’ bike, didn’t look like he had junior gears on….Louis doesn’t know shit. Phillip should upgrade. What ever happend to the mandatory upgrade? He’s only hurting himself, It wont be so easy to win in a real race.

Anonymous

Bear mountain is the greatest single day race EVER!!!!!!! Well, that is, if you don’t include batenkill, or pretty much any other race ever run….

Anonymous

Phillip … Louis … Batenkill … EVER!!!!!

the spelling, the grammar, the CAPS. the effusive punctuation. the message of unadulterated negativity.

oh man.

please, please tell me this is the second coming of Todd almighty

Anonymous

Didn’t he own the 3/4 at Ephrata? Good enough for me. However, when I asked last week why he was doing the junior race (and Lewis for that matter), I was told because it’d be more competitive. The junior race only had 18 registered and only 3 laps, which is fine for regular juniors, but these 2 could be competitive in the 70 mile Bear race…

Anonymous

Won a handful of spring races, 2nd at GT, won Ephrata 2 stages and GC, 2nd Battenkill, Jiminy, won Bear. Time for the automatic upgrade and a team with some senior mentoring.

Anonymous

i don’t think junior races qualify for an upgrade from cat 3 to cat 2. pretty sure Filip would not have won the cat 3 race. definitely not with junior gears.

Anonymous

SKNT or Empire should be chompin at the bit for these guys. Love to see those two guys do Redlands or Gila with a national outfit.

Anonymous

There are locals that have done much less than Capala and they got the Cat 2. He has many podiums in Cat3 races and the big junior races. Kid is fast!

Brian G.

From the fan’s perspective, yesterday was pretty much cycling heaven. I was able to stand around in the warm sunshine, chat with people with like minded pursuits (as opposed to my family who thinks I’m completely daft for enjoying this silly sport) and watch amateurs kill themselves for basically a fun day on the bike. Plus my kids go to climb and play on the rocks. Good stuff.

O'M

Great to see Brian G back in circulation and Reed R. It was a splendid day of racing (or not) and spectating! Good job Filip and Lewis!

Anonymous

Agreed. I love there dedication but they need to get a grip on reality. Way to serious for Cat 3 and Cat 4 bike racing.

Anonymous

Complaining about chase group etiquette over on PE and how a tag along sprinted by him at the line… Not letting all the spectators see how he was the strongest and pulled the weaker riders around for 50 miles. Funny…

Junior racer

Saw a motorcycle with a photographer on the back wearing a vest clearly labeled “press”. They got a few good pictures of me pace making on the front of the junior field…so any idea who took these and where they are?

Anonymous

Yes, great to see Reed up and walking and out at the race yesterday. A lot of people took a beating this Spring!!

Anonymous

Has far surpassed the mandatory upgrade number. Some might consider that sandbagging, regardless of age.

And honestly, winning against a bunch of 3/4s is not all that impressive. Now, if he was lightin it up in a pro 1/2 and placing or winning, thats a different story. Not saying that he doesn’t have that potential, he may very well, but sitting back in the 3/4s isn’t gonna help, especially if you are intending to impress elite or pro teams. 3/4 results are not worth much of anything in the eyes of a director sportif. You think georgie hincapie was chillin in the 3/4 races at 17? no, he was bustin pro’s balls at 14. get on it. upgrade.

Anonymous

for god’s sake can’t we leave the juniors alone? do you people have no self-respect at all? why would you want to flame some kid anonymously for trying to be successful in a sport you do yourself? the next time you’re tempted to make a comment about a teenage bike racer, just stop.

la verite

real racer: never read or write on nyvelocity
fake racer: spend half of his day at work write and read nyvelocity.

535

anyone that is obviously uninformed about specific riders and makes suggestions (that should only be made by a trainer after working with a rider and knowing him well) is no better than an armchair general, please, we have enough of those leading our country already…

Anonymous

who can we make fun of here? Clearly not women, teenagers, blacks, I’m assuming dominicans and the like, sandbaggers, masters riders, dopers, homosexuals….who’s left?

jft

It’s so easy to give advice and/or criticize people when you’re not accountable

If you’re going to armchair QB some rider in public, at a *minimum* you have a responsibility to identify yourself.

Otherwise, how can anyone take you seriously when you’re not even willing to do that

Keep it Real

Great rider, great kid, but a Pro 12 race is 10x harder to win than a Cat 3 or Junior race. When/if he upgrades to a Cat 2, the subsequent senior mens races will be his first real test.

Hate the Haters

Hey lets not trash the Junior he’s one the good riders out there as well as Lewis Almonte. There Putting in there work to get to the next level. Why rush the kid to upgrade it seems like he wants to dominate the 3s then move to the next level. These juniors are our Future in Cycling.Lets Commented them not trash them ……..

Anonymous

seems like people are just wondering why he’s racing junior races. Whatever, I guess it’s fun to win and he’s got time to upgrade whenever he wants. Besides, don’t kids like to torture innocent creatures? (like old cat-3s…)

Colin P.

are more bad**ss than anybody i went to high school with in Central PA football country. i’m glad that most people who talk about them in the real (non-cyber) world exude only respect for them. the better these guys do, the better it reflects on NYC bike racing. the young guys who go out of town and tear it up represent for all of us.

Andy

Old cat 3’s are definitely not innocent. But I guess that just means they deserve the torture even more. But seriously, how cool is it that Filip’s family supports him so much? How many of us wish we had parents that supportive?

Anonymous

who says he wants to go pro…maybe he’ll just be a really good collegiate rider and get an education.

a JOONYAH

1) hop on some junior gears, and THEN tell me how easy it is to race in a pro crit. you have no idea of the disadvantage. watch the finish at bear for juniors next year, you can’t even freakin pedal.

2) filip would have won the 3’s at bear, no problem. he and i whooped dan hoffman’s ass at ephrata.

jft

“seems like people are just wondering why he’s racing junior races.”

I love that sort of lame “people are wondering” comment. Are *you* wondering? And if you are, how about just asking the person you’re wondering about?

My two cents

It is possible to race at the highest level in the US and still go to college. There are a few pros who are still undergrads. If you are really good as a junior, get on a pro team, go to college and then race for a couple of years after college if you really love it. No need to pass up college to race pro in the US.

pro amateur

this site is for pro amateurs. people with good jobs: lawyers, brokers etc… people who can afford the shit that’s advertised here. people who like cycling as a HOBBY. Don

To Catch a Predator

Nothing creepier than single, possibly jobless 40ish guys sitting around critiquing juniors anonymously…..I’m callin’ DATELINE

Anonymous

Wait…this site is for “pro amateurs??” I thought it was for Queens movie times!!! Speaking of which, Schmalz are there tickets left for the 10:40 PM showing of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”??

schmalz

But I can get you a deal on an off-broadway production of “The Poseidon Adventure – the Musical” starring the cast of “The Facts of Life”.

Dr. William O'Donnell

“2) filip would have won the 3’s at bear, no problem. he and i whooped dan hoffman’s ass at ephrata.”

In the RR (which has nothing of the same profile as a Bear or Battenkill)where he dropped out of your break because of the whining and he was a respectful competitor, in the TT where Filip finished well behind him (which actually DID have a climb), or in the crit where he was caught behind a crash (which again is nothing like Bear)?

Filip is a strong competitor (one of the strongest 3’s I have ridden against), and I enjoyed racing with him (and Lewis Almonte at different times). I have great respect for the both, but I find your statement to be a bit boastful (and way out of line) and so I respectfully call you on it.

Anonymous

yeah I know Filip isnt in CRCAJr but whatever.

the Old Vs the New

Could be a stage race, incroporating a hilly RR and a 1K-loop crit, no TT.

ok MJGreen, get on it!

Anonymous

Doc, everyone else: grow up and stop being so threatened by the kids. You sound like Mr. Wilson in Dennis the Menace.

Dr. William O'Donnell

Not threatened. I KNOW they are better than I and they are the future of this great sport. I think it’s inspiring that they have such talent at a young age and I wish I had both the talent and the foresight to have been racing at that age.

My beef was just with a bit of an exaggerated statement with regards to one of my boys (Mr. Hoffman) who has demonstrated that he is deserving of being compared at the very least to these talented juniors and not to be simply Shat on because he isn’t a junior.

Anonymous

will – i’m not saying dan isn’t good. he’s freakin great, that win at battenkill was awesome. however, ephrata RR was a sprint finish, filip won. the crit was a sprint finish, filip won. he was caught behind a crash, in the last corner or so? then he was about 15 back, and wasn’t going to be in the sprint anyway. if the crash was in the middle of the race, he could’ve easily caught back on and gotten in the front. i’m just saying, bear and ephrata suit filip better than they do dan in my opinion.

jft

you’re willing to argue so strongly about Filip, but not sign your name?

Seriously, I’m curious: why not sign your name? Are you worried about something happening to you if someone knows who is saying this?

Anonymous

seems like only about 10 strong juniors in the Bear race. I think Capala could take most 3s in a sprint but not a guarantee he would be there at the end in the 3s. There were 100 racers, and lots of crashes. Harder to stay at the front in a bigger feild. Capala would have been up there most likely. Time to race the 1-2s get some experience and even faster.

Chris M

I think the funniest part of this thread is picturing JT, fuming at his keyboard, about how people are still posting anon. JT, ummmm, its business as usual. Time to let it go?

Anonymous

cut and paste the links. For some reason I did with that last one. I’m still laughing as I picture it being JFT at his keyboard. F-ing hilarious.

Go fast, turn right…

Zane Dordai

I just checked the results on Bikereg and I believe I slotted in about 7th. Unfortunately…my name wasnt ANYWHERE on the results sheet, and I had to leave shortly after the race (mothers day…) What should I do? I paid an entry fee like everyone else, and that was an okay sprint result for me…Does anyone have any ideas/who I should contact to get this resolved? Thanks in advance…

M. Green

Send an email to the promoter. They will review the tape. The results will not be sent into USACycling until people have had a chance to look at the results.

Cranky

I’ll preface this by saying that this is not indended as an insult. Perhaps if we all understood you better, there would be less insulting going on here.

By now it should be obvious that folks who frequent this website prefer to post anonymously. That is thier perogative, right? Sort of like wearing a helmet. It is your call.

What is your issue with posting anon? What difference does it make? Just curious…

not JFT

because this is still a conversation board, not an echo chamber. It would be so much more meaningful if you knew who you were talking to. Unless one values “cyber chat” over face to face dialouge, putting your name next to your comment brings this closer to real conversation which in my opinion trumps anon everytime.

anon = more meaningless
name = more meanigful

jft

By now it should be fairly obvious that I want to know why people post anonymously so much, and also want people to do it less often. That’s my perogative. I think, in most cases, the quality of discussion is higher when people back up what they say with a name. Not always, but often.

But my question for you is why do you do it? And the possible follow up question is, are you afraid of something? I’m not saying that as an insult, but rather just don’t understand the purpose of saying things you believe in (I hope) and at the same time wanting to hide that it’s you saying them.

Anonymous

No locals placed in the top 10 in either the men\’s or women\’s p12 field (the only fields that matter). Looking at the top 20, Gavi was best at 19th. CRCA women were only slightly better at 11th, 14th, 15th, and 17th. That\’s pretty lame. I don\’t know what you people talk about all day when you suck so much.

Anonymous

So i guess you dont count the guy who actually won the pro12 race, beating a number of pros? You are an ASS.

And considering that CRCA does not have any current pros and only a handful of 1s in the lot – but a bunch of 2s that arent expected to win that race – Id say the results werent that bad, though also not as good as some prev years. so what? If CRCA won all the places people would bitch that it isnt a relevant race and its just for locals, right? ASS.

Anonymous

Oh Jesus. JT and Cranky, get a room! Cranky can wear a mask or something. Just do it offline for a change. Were talking about racing here.

Cranky

people post anon. because they can. you can’t change that. this is cyberspace, dude. not much of a connection to the real world if you ask me. did you ever see The Matrix? you are fighting code, basically.

Besides, I’m Cranky. What else do you want to know?

jft

I’ve posted anonymously online, and when someone asked me my name I’ve told them. No need to hide anything.

So really, the “what else” I want to know is “what are you afraid of”? Or if “afraid” is too strong, then what are you worried about. You need not even reveal your name here, but it’d be interesting for you to share, even anonymously, what your reason for hiding is.

PS, how can you name really be cranky? I haven’t seen any cranky listed in local or regional race results and I thought you placed with moderate regularity.

Just some guy

Remember Adam Duncan’s post a few weeks ago. He made a good race report only to get flamed over and over. I haven’t seen him post anything since. He’s just one example.
Posting with your name only puts a target on you. I’m sure YOU know that.

Bear Guru OG

I had 3 predictions come true.

Cat 3s – – WWV was the team to watch. They won.

Cat 3s – – Adler would totally eff it up. They did.

pro/1/2 – – Anyone’s game, but looking for an Empire win. They won.

Masters – – I admit, I was lame by assuming Roger the hungry shark was racing masters without checking to see if he was registered.

Justin

I’ll bet plenty of people told Adam face to face they enjoyed his report – that means alot more than any number of anonymous flames. Keep ’em coming Adam

jft

I don’t quite get your meaning. If Duncan hadn’t signed his name, does that mean people wouldn’t have criticized what he wrote?

Is that what you’re saying?

Or is it that now “in real life” away from this board, people are treating him worse or “targetting” him somehow? Whereas if he’d been anonymous, they couldn’t?

Cranky

Why did Mark Twain write under an assumed name? He just did, the reason why doesn’t matter.

I did happen to place in a local bicycle race last weekend, but I did not register as Cranky. So the mystery lives on, JFT.

How did you make out over the weekend?

Anonymous

not really. some people just pathologically need to be able to say “got ya last”, and win every argument no matter how futile

jft

had fun and pain this weekend
a bit worse than I’d hoped on sunday

good racing on your part we’ll have to assume, cranky

I still don’t understand what you’re afraid or or worried about regarding your name

Anonymous

For some even posting with their name is almost anon. They’ll go on and on and on posting about topics but face to face they’ll tell you “I don’t want to talk about it.” The web is a strange beast.

keepin it real

the p1/2 race was from New Haven. I don\’t care if he\’s on Empire- you guys can\’t claim him as a local. i doubt he came up through CRCA. Sorry, 19th is the best you guys did in your own race.

interested bystander

so 2 days later, we still don’t have any race reports? I’d like to hear from Prensky and Trimble, the play by play from their perspectives since they both did pretty well. I’d also like to hear from someone in the top 5 of the cat-3 race. I suppose p-1-2’s never post race reports because they’re too cool. But come on! how did it all go down?? Where and when did the fields split? were there any breakaways? who crashed? what the hell happened?

ex-compact user

too bad you had a 50! switch that out immediately. You don’t need a compact unless you’re a grandma racing over the Alps.
