Anti-SMASH!

After watching a Paris Roubaix where so many of my favorites were taken out by the Roubaix Sniper, I find it hard to rally this morning and post results for the weekend’s races—a notion compounded by the fact that there’s precious little binary evidence of the past two day’s racing.

At the race with a name and location that serves to test my restraint, the Johnny Cakes Spring Series in Coxsackie, NY, Justin Lindine of bikereg.com is reported to have won with Roger Aspholm of Westwood Velo finishing second, securing the overall victory. In the other race that I’m supposing would lettered “b”, Toga, FGX and Kingpin all had racers placing in the top five, but the win went to James Stevens, who I’m sure races for a team of some sort, just not one that I am currently aware of.

The results and photos for the Chris Hinds Memorial Crit are said to be coming today on the site known as bikereg.

The Spring Series Race is clouded in internet mystery, yielding no facts nor rumors about the outcome.

Thor! SMASH! Flecha! Turn Thor! SMASH! Turn!

Few would do any work, but 30 guys thought they were Robbie McEwen at the end. All the guys sprinting from the back of the field at Cat’s Paw caused 2 independent crashes at the same time!

Anonymous

that’s the problem with a 4 lap CP race. tough for the get away stay away guys, and plenty of strong legs at the end.

Anonymous

Be careful, Mr 09:49. Just the other day (9 Apr), an anonymous writer (Mr 08:34) was quite aggrieved that someone else made a facetious micturation reference. He proclaimed that this (a facetious micturation reference) was his territory, called the poster on it, and was awarded a posthumous Comment of the Day by Schmalz on 10 Apr.

Facetious micturation debate: https://nyvelocity.com/content/2009/topic-thu-04092009 (search: “comment stealer”)

Posthumous COTD award: https://nyvelocity.com/content/2009/topic-fri-04102009 (search: “Comment of the day”)

To my mind, this precedent was a fascinating turn of events, and thus begins a new chapter in the evolution of NYVeloCity, where aggrieved anonymous posters may become more aggressive in asserting their right to safe-guard the domain of previously unattributed posts. I was, as you might expect, giddy at the possibilities and enjoyed the long weekend doing some exciting first-source research.

I mention this to you due to that fact that my research effort included some exhaustive cross-indexing of various comments by “comment type.” My research suggests, and I would argue that, Pseudo-Latino jokes remain the prior domain of an anonymous poster from 26 Jul 2008. In a thread discussing the Dominican Republic (DR), and racers or nationals therein, and the efficacy of attending such races when invited by the DR Cycling Federation, as well as the rights and responsibilities of accepting that invitation (and the requisite fines, punishments and/or sanctions for accepting the invitation but subsequently not attending without prior notice), an anonymous poster from 26 Jul 2008 added this gem:

“By: Wheelsucker
Sat, 07/26/2008 – 00:00 ***

This DR stereotyping is total bullsh*t. Those of you posting here in ignorance need a clue. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any lower. I mean, how else are you going to clear acres of underbrush? By hand? C’mon, get real. I’ve had my DR Wood Chipper since the 2005 Tour. Self-feeds 90% of material. 30 ft lbs of torque. Chips branches up to 5-1/2″ thick. Best purchase I ever made.”

(Original source: https://nyvelocity.com/content/race-results/2008/hangover-5272008)

So while you are free to make Pseudo-Latino facetious references at your leisure, be forewarned that a new precedent exists wherein you may get a stern rebuke from the author above, especially if any of your Pseudo-Latino facetiousness is ever worthy enough to be recognized by Mr Schmalz’ illustrious COTD accreditation.

*** Mr Shen, please. What time was this posted, Sir? All the times read “00:00”. More care in handling archived threads, Sir, as I have implored you many a time!

Aaron

It only seems like the back of the field because everyone else has gone by when you see the crashers lying on the ground. The guy who crossed his front wheel with my back wheel was nowhere near the back of the pack.

Anonymous

it’s not the sprinting that’s the problem… it’s the lack of concentration, the swerving, the cursing, the holdja line dickishness that started all the way back at horseshit alley and continued until the finish.

Anonymous

out and back could be dangerous because of the speeds descending, the possibility of a collision is high… don’t want to even mention the fact that we’ll probably need to allow other use of the road (like the NYCC Sunday ride.) what’s worst is AVD lack of clarity about the event, one day licenses? women’s field?

Anonymous

The proposed TT course for saturday is pure stupidity. Way too dangerous. They should just do a hill climb TT starting at the parking lot and ending at the police station.

Anonymous

A time trial without timely results is like a tree falling in the forest with no one there to see it.

Anonymous

the course does not go up and down police station hill. the turnaround is at the bottom. so, what’s so dangerous? it could be a pretty cool course if people stopped whining so much. assuming the rockslide is clear, the road can’t be any worse than the TT at Fitchburg.

Anonymous

The rock slide is clear. But there are myriad issues with the course. The road is very narrow to have guys going in both directions and trying the pass. It starts out on a precipitous descent that very rough. In sections it’s very bumpy, very fast, and only boulders to prevent a serious fall. It’s an ill thought out proposal. It might well be passable as a road bike TT, but in aero bars someone stands to get hurt. No matter what, an out and back is going to make passing difficult.

Anonymous

Good idea…let’s hurtle multiple racers at each other at high speeds on a sometimes broken road with no guard rails and steep drops. Have fun with that…

Anonymous

you would race an event that you felt was ill-conceived and dangerous because you wanted to preserve your position in the overall spring series standings.

Anonymous

not if someone bangs into you while riding on River Road, then you both have AVD to blame.

If there’s a TT this weekend, Hitler’s gonna be handing out ice skates down below.

Anonymous

Godwin’s Law (also known as Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states: “As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”

Anonymous

Despite bike reg showing only 22 registrants, the number is likely quite a bit higher due to guys being pre-registered for the whole series.

Anonymous

Why haven’t they announced this team and showcased the kits and the fine black and white design work?

Anonymous

Seriously the TT is an out and back?
Are they insane?
Just make it the hill climb from the boat basin and make everyone do it twice to average the times out.

Anonymous

Nobody believes he is real. Nobody has ever seen him or knows anybody that ever rode directly for him, but if you’ve ever ridden through horseshit alley and gotten a taste, you ride for the Ralpha. Only, you don’t know it.

Anonymous

Only movie better than RAD and Thrashin for pure comedy was BMX Bandits (straight from Australia).

in points races, riders get lapped, no? so why cant people ride hard from the gun, and get some sledgehammer selection going on???
put some welly into it, eh?

BTW, go bqck to P-R, Boonen hammering the shit outta those pretenders that they all start crasdhes for no other reason that they are rolling their eys backards with effort and dust, then Pozzo Pazzo tries in vain. Diya see his rpm? way to small a geqr for cobbles! Boonen was grinding at like 80rpm perfect for cobbles, while Pozzo Pazzo was rding real pretty like…

As one legend once said, “not fn good enough!”

In RR TT, ride early with less P3 Wannabees, and crush them roads, fer chrst sakes, bunch of hot oil wet warm pussies

Anonymous

You could feel boonen going faster than Popo…you could see it on the TV, noticeably faster….and he was pulling out 10 seconds a mile on him…..flecha was the only one that seemed like he could have hanged.

Rapha.cc – got to admit – beautiful website

Anonymous

Rather than ask why Peppo’s wheels were mismatched, ask yourself why yours aren’t. The guy won. Something is working in his favor.

Anonymous

Ah but you must admit it is smart….if you like that jersey — you can go get one at the store….same one, isn’t that the essence of marketing. You must admit better than this scenario

“Hey sick jersey man — where do I get one of those white Pacifico Jersies Man…I want to put it in my drawer next to my Discovery jersey.”

“Oh this is my team man….but I think the over stock will be on Nashbar.com soon…next to the Mickey Mouse jersies”

Anonymous

just as a general rule….an all black kit just says ‘i cant design my way out of a paperbag’.

Example: DKNY (not a great looking kit either!)

team ralpha would be better served with using the pastel stuff.

Anonymous

there was no design. they took rapha clothes and slapped a CRCA logo on the shoulders. then they bought funny helmets.

Anonymous

TT Vegan always said, “I don’t believe in God, but I’m afraid of him.”

Well, I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is the Ralpha.

Anonymous

Actually it’s a track helmet. Supposedly super aero. Chris Hoy uses one. The point of using it on the road?

Anonymous

To look like a guy who doesn’t give a shit about spending money on cool shit. I like it. Keep wearing your 2004 Giro Craphat.

Anonymous

Thumbs down on hand painted helmets. If I’m not mistaken, if you paint a cycling helmet, it voids the warranty and the companies responsibility to the user of protection. Therefore, you could pull up to a race and possibly be prevented to ride if it gets noticed!

Anonymous

PR sucked. We were facing an amazing ending with the true cream of the crop riders (save Van Summeren). Two top sprinters in Boonen and Thor and three great one day riders in Flecha (in the mix late in every PR), Pozzato, and Hoste, and one of them had a teammate. Only Thor I think was comfortable with the group as is and would have been happy to go with them into the velodrome. The rest would have had to drop Boonen and Thor. I thought when Flecha and VS went that that could work. Hoste and VS would have just had to attack and attack. I don’t think Pipo was really shadowing Boonen in this one, he would have countered in hopes of dislodging the two sprinters. But alas, everyone gets some Flanderian to throw oil down in front of them leaving Tommy to hammer home the victor.

Anonymous

Favorite kits are DKNY and Rapha. You can wear these anytime and you dont look like some wannabe racer in a pastel kit that will be thrown out in a year out of pure disgust. I want on Rapha just for the kit.

Anonymous

Not in agreement. Boonen, while a top sprinter, is also the ultimate classics rider in built and ability. Pippo showed a couple of weeks ago that he can beat Boonen in a two man sprint and he would have been comfortable sprinting in a three man sprint with Thor included. I do think that there might be some truth in what Pippo said about the spectators making it harder for him and I also agree that Boonen had some assistance from the camera bikes, especially when there were cross winds and they showed him from the side. Flecha was hiding and not sharing pulls evenly in the run up to his attack and got what was coming to him. To me, Boonen was deserved winner and we could all take a few pages from his book. He made the race for himself and did not wait for others to initiate moves. He did not base his race on other riders but on his own ability and how he felt at the time.

Anonymous

Regardless of the ill timed crashes that might have made a more exciting finish…boonen did make two vicious attacks…BOTH of which caused splits, his last one, knocked out that entire Saxo Bank team….it only caused a 30 yard rift but they couldnt close the gap. I love watching races where pros of that quality just can’t close the gap.

Rapha – that team got so hooked up….they have about 50 different looks they could pull off with all the stuff they got…I am sure they have a nice wite summer kit to be doned when it gets waremer….a little jealous, indeed.

Anonymous

responding to 10:27 and also continuing on some of the “hopeful” points made about P-R and pozzatto, i agree, his strategy is not the most “honorable” and certainly not fun to watch. but from his perspective, what else do you do? boonen has a team built around him which includes several legitimate contenders for the overall, if the race doesn’t shape up for him. five or six quickstep guys finished above the next best placed katusha rider. if you are strong enough, and pozzatto clearly is, why not tack yourself onto the guy who you know is going to be the aggressor who tears apart the race, and better still, whom you know you can beat in a sprint??? that said, boonen played his own hand to perfection, was the instigator, and in my opinion it was entirely appropriate that everyone behind him got wiped out while he remained on the front, safe. from this non-sprinter’s point of view, it was perfect to see him get a chance to use brute strength and determination to slowly distance the guy who was otherwise committed to sitting in his draft until the last 200m. great race, says i.

Anonymous

Pipo wins one sprint against Boonen and you think he thinks he can beat him all the time? and Thor? Hey, Fararr beat them all too but I’d still put my money on Cav and Boonen in the next one.

Anonymous

solid point from booth boonan posts. He is the guy that made his own fortune slaughtering guys that they knew the tornado was coming. A lot of riders late in the race just didnt have the extra gear late in the game. Boonan is just a fricken machine! Thor was rockin heavily in the saddle before he went down. I think Boonan just smelled the blood in the water and snapped at the perfect time. His last acceleration would have been tough to match even if those guys hadnt gone down. Most of them were already on the ropes anyhow.

Anonymous

Rosters are up. Some big names on the start list including Landis. I see some locals are signed up (Wilson?). Looks like a hard day in the saddle for some locals. Best of luck. Look for a BMC racer or Tim Johnson of Ouch. I am betting Ouch sends Chodroff off the front at the gun and then they set up a big counter late in the race when he is brought back.

My dark horses are Zirbel of Bissell, either Keough of Bikereg or Kelly and Lindine of Bikereg.

As for Cat 2s – I like Ernest Taukest if he makes it to the final sprint.

Cat 3s – I think there are 2 fields but I would go with Peppo, Slokar, Will O, Cuttler, Gabele, John Nash of Pawling and Bernstein.

Cat 4s – James Stevens of TOGA

Juniors – Cooper Ray of TOGA

Best of luck to everyone racing. Going to be a warm day.

Anonymous

good predictions. very curious to how the cat 2 race goes. it’s always interesting when the 2s have their own field.

Anonymous

Battenkill and Fitchburg are the only big races that have them.
Would love to see more opportunities such as at Bear or GMSR.

Anonymous

James hasn’t upgraded yet? Between GMSR, Tour of the Catskills (6th and a 3rd), Housatonic, and J Peak I would think he’d be a 3 by now. Actually, if he took the time to figure out how many 4s he beat at Housatonic and J Peak he would be a 3 now. Good luck James!

Anonymous

the sandbagging avalanche will descend upon you momentarily and you’ll be a honored member of that club.

Pretty soon you’ll get your own banner….

Anonymous

Really nice guy and a strong racer that could be a 3. Dont worry he will upgrade but you should enjoy having some stronger guys to push the pace in the 4s. If you get the 3s all the guys are like James and stronger. BTW – James did well at Housatonic and Jiminy – the 4/5 which is not that hard. I suspect he will be a 3 after Battenkill as many 3s will be going to the 2s (Slokar, Peppo, Bernstein, Cuttler).

Anonymous

Hula Hoop Low-Key, Setanta, Badler, Foundation, and Kissena will all work flawlessly as teams, thereby rendering James emasculated. The joys of Cat 4 tactics!

Anonymous

Do you hear that David E. Burns and Kansas Waugh? You simply don’t exist. You guys aren’t super-bad-lers. You’re mini-badlers.

Anonymous

Prancing peacocks, or not, check their results. Adler’s 3 squad has a tendency to win races. And there are three of them. So that would make betting on them a wise idea, I think?

Anonymous

The ‘Baggers. Face it, this just means you’ll only have to lose to these guys a couple more times. No big deal. If you keep training, one day you’ll get called a ‘bagger and get to gloat.

Sure, you’ve been training since December to get your top 5 at Battenkill, but do you really have a chance? They’ll always be some natural talents that will displace you. Don’t resist.

I don’t know about you, but the second I had enough points to upgrade I’d be on that. How cool is it to be able to race with stronger guys and learn more about the sport?

Anonymous

Will you guys be envy arguing about Adler for the rest of your lives? Just want to check so I can tune out for next 50 years.

Anonymous

Will win his race and then upgrade if no mechanicals. Super strong, but new to racing and needed a bit more races under his belt before he moved up to the 2’s.
Nicest guy in the race if that means anything.

Anonymous

I actually think Adler can win Battenkill. Peppo would have won last year but didn’t due to a mechanical. He still got a wheel and bridged to the lead group. Consider that, plus another year of focused training, and you have a recipe for success. Plus, he has Slokar and Cuttler, both riding strong with similar chances going FTW. Eff the haters, Adler has a good shot.

Anonymous

Tiny dude that can climb like a goat and sprint well which is a perfect combo for Battenkill.

JG

Anonymous

How many NYVC predictions for Battenkill or Bear have actually proven correct? With 100+ guys in all the fields from all over the northeast, I don’t think anyone really knows who is the strongest and the strongest guy often isn’t the winner anyway.

Anonymous

Not a climbers race but I would not expect to see a guy like Wilson in the final sprint…. Dudes like that are too big to stay with the front group on the hills.

Anonymous

I didn’t mechanical at Battenkill, but I too would have won if nobody passed me in the sprint…same goes for Jiminy, Bear, etc. etc.

Anonymous

Are there pics out there somewhere from Sunday’s Spring Series race? I was planning to work on my “Cat 4 Glory” photo collage this afternoon…

Anonymous

I would be a 2 by now if I didn’t waste my energy on NY Velocity posting wussy predictions and making excuses for myself

Anonymous

Interesting. I’ll mention that to my $200 a month coach and see what he says. Perhaps he can work up a NYVSS score, and I can track that also. He said something about “not getting wrapped up in petty bull shit and keeping your head in the game”. I’m not sure what he’s referring to.

Anonymous

Are riders on NYVC required to spend a minimum amount of time on the website each day, clicking on sponsor links to boost ad revenue? Alex, you might want to put that in the contract.

schmalz

I consult a coach on many things: recovery, mood swings, dietary tips, tumescence – there’s really nothing they can’t help with!

Anonymous

Times are tough. There might be some coaches who slip in a little happy ending after the ride. Shop around.

Anonymous

I ride a min of 10 hours a day all in the 53/11. After that I do 6000 crunches and 10×10 squats at a min of 1000lbs. For my post workout meal I eat nothing but fruit and soy for recovery. I am now in the process of getting on the UZSHITMYPANTZ national team so that I can get my Cat1 upgrade up from my current Cat4. Once that goes through I will be racing mainly centuries and the occassional 10 mile TT.

WWV

Anonymous

No! That’s what I’m saying, they can help with erectile dysfunction. Perhaps you have the wrong coach? It starts innocently enough with some on-site seat adjustment.

Anonymous

I have to admit to some level of confusion as to why that TT guy doesn’t deserve his upgrade, or how he would have goten a cat 2 upgrade on both the road and track without results. Surely there must be at least some reasonable adherence to what’s presented as the upgrade standards?

Anonymous

He’s lactose intolerant. Read USCF handbook–there’s a special clause in there for automatic upgrade if suffering nausea, cramps, bloating, gas, and diarrhea while a Cat 4.

Anonymous

you’d think that, but you’d be wrong. his results on usa cycling do not merit any such upgrade. on the other hand, who really cares?

Anonymous

Sure coaches can fix that … lots of coaches get a cut when they recommend a divorce lawyer. Times are tough. You have to diversify. “When it comes down to it, you have to decide what is more important, and I know a good guy on Long Island”

Anonymous

IF you follow his exploits you know that he dominated the local Phillipines masters Cat 5 1980s Steel Bike circuit this winter. That domination got him on the Phillipines Natioanal Team. I guess if you are on a national team they issue you a Cat2 on road and track. The guy does not even have enough races to be a Cat 4 (need 10 mass starts). The best thing is that he truely believes he is at the level of competitive cat 1s.

WWTTVD?

Anonymous

Even for NYVelocity – I guess the day was inevitable…posting a photo set which “happens” to include an accusation of a rider causing a crash by supposedly showing visual evidence, although you really can’t tell anything from the photos.

I believe that whatever did happen, it was unintentional, the “offended” rider rudely rejected any and all apologies and any attempt at good sportsmanship, and apparently still is not over it.

Very poor taste IMHO.

Anonymous

maybe they were just hanging out relaxing, arguing over thin vs. thick crust pizza?

luzzo: “hey, whassamatta you, eh? my team, we like-a some thin crust, maybe a little oil & ball-samic for dipping. wha, you no like-a my pizza? what are you, communist?”

curb man: “hey man, i’m just chillin. i just went into zone 6 a few minutes ago, and got all puke burp, ok? lemme eat my clif gel shots in peace, will ya? chill, bro, chill.”

Anonymous

you take umbrage at pictures of a crash and fail to mention the plethora of bad (and yet so funny) taste in Toto. They simultaneously mock a cancer victim, his parenting skills and display a phallus and yet a crash photo is what puts your bad tast-o-meter in the red.

you sir, are a comic genius.

This is serious business, maligning a rider representing one of NY’s finest institutions, Luzzo’s Pizza, a dining experience par excellence. Luzzo’s is a gastronomic palace representing the very best of NY and gourmet eating. I can’t stand idly by (or lie on the CP grass) without defending Luzzo’s Honor.

Hey, they might even win a race, you know, Even the Luzzo’s get lucky sometimes…watch your back Mr arbiter of good taste.
