Hangover 3/17/2008

Section head text.

Grant’s Tomb was snow free this year. Jacob Keough from Sakonnet wins the 1/2 event in a field sprint over Bobby Lea and Wilson Vasquez. Vinnie Scalia takes the race away from the sprinter’s in the 3/4 race, netting him his second win of the day. In the 4 race, Adam Duncan crosses the line first, but due to his relegation, Kimani Nielson is declared the winner.

Margaret Shirley from Radical Media wins the women’s 1/2/3 race, and Maria Quiroga makes it a Radical sweep by winning the 3/4 race.

Full results and neat very pro looking finish photos here.

The Branch Brook 1/2/3 race had a Somerville Sports one-two with Tom Bencivengo and team namesake David Somerville taking the top two spots. Chris Louden wins the 3/4’s for Sid’s. Ed Ceccolini wins the masters and the 4/5 goes to Maurice Gamanho.

Reading the internet tea leaves tells me that Rashad Guerra won the 1/2/3 Spring series race, with Doug O’Neill winning the master’s race, and George (I have the perfect name for “talk like a pirate” day) Gyarmathy winning the 3/4 race. The winner of the 5 race is, as of publication this morning, a mystery.

Bethel cancelled due to snow forecast.

Grants was first class. The trolls who harshed on Alex for blogging about the experience of organizing the race owe him an apology. I won’t hold my breath.

That day was about as good as it gets. One weird question: Why doesnt any one do it in the summer? Has it been done? Is the permitting a nightmare?

Anyway, fantastic job by all the Columbia people — and Alan of course. Having the Cadence pit there was a nice touch, too. And whoever sponsored the weather — excellent job.

Sometimes we dont know how good we have it around here….

Got to ride with the Sakonnet boys on Sunday and they are an impressive group, Basil has done a great job again. It was nice to see them win locally. Jake, 19 I think, told us he can do 1600 watts for 200 meters, and he weighs 140 pounds. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

Agree with below. Grant’s was first class all around, what a great event in the greatest city. I heard several neighborhood spectators wonder why it wasn’t promoted more to non cyclists as they clearly enjoyed watching the races.

First class!?!? There was a rec rider riding down the middle of the course on the final sprint of the P/1/2! Where were the marshals to prevent this? NONE on that stretch. Why didn’t the pace car wail on the horn and get this guy off the road? Sloppy and DANGEROUS.

Props to Basil for transforming, organizing, and promoting the team, but it’s more likely that the new DS brought in the Keoughs.

very well organized and run. thanks columbia! we need more crit racing in nyc. my only complaint is that the 3/4 field was a little too big. and to the fat a$$ in the yellow kit that caused a crash directly in front of me, turn 1, lap 2: you suck a$$hole! that was ridicuously unecessary.

Sound like CU cycling did a great job

The race has been held at other times of the year with another promoter.

Here’s the race info and results from when it was held in June (note high level field – this was the day before Philly)

and another year late summer

Victor Vitelli did the main work to make those possible. And it was a lot of work.

The last summertime race I remember there was the Women’s Challenge, when they had the NRC race there. That’s when I fell in love with the course — that course is one of the best crit courses around. But just as it’s been said before, it’s a b**ch to put on. The main kudos should go to Isaac Dinner from Columbia who was out supervising the towing of parked cars on the course since 12:30am — yes, that’s just after midnight folks. So by the time most of you folks showed up to registration, Isaac was 14 hours into his day having raced once already (and would race again later) and not looking the worse for wear. Oh to be that young again……

OK, now getting to the point…it would be very cool to see a race on this course during the summer, but somebody has to step up to the plate and make it happen. Don’t ask CRCA to do it; their plate is already full. AVD does the Spring Series plus Great Neck and the Senia race in the fall; Kissena does FBF and 7 Prospect Park races during the year. So it’s going to be up to someone to take the reins and make it happen. If someone wants to step up, I’d be more than willing to help guide the lucky soul to make it happen.

b field

the ds is matthew koschara. he handpicked the roster and was in the race with them saturday. he clearly picked well.

The Grants race has serious marshall problems. people were wandering all over the course. They are lucky someone didnt get killed in the 1/2 race.
there is no excuse for having someone wander out on the course when a race is on.

You try telling a bunch of NYCC B-SIG riders that they have to ride around a course. Dude they’re B-SIG! they’re the S***! They don’t have to listen to a Marshal.

was there a photographer at the spring series? i wish to critique victory salutes from this week’s cat’s paw finish.

Ray Alba

Elizabeth Emery – she is now a PHD living in California. Is she racing again? She was a great cyclist….

If you are riding around a barricade and find yourself on a course in the race AND cause a crash… you should really not be on a bike. What an idiot! I hope he made sure that the riders in the crash were alright, sounds like it was a hit and run!

jft

a barricade in the road is there for a reason. Some barricades are to stop cars only and not bike (like the ones on River Road), and if you know that then go around.

But when if you come upon a new barricade in the road, spend a little time/though finding out why it is there.

Sommerville Fan

This is what Zabriske said about Cozza’s mustache:

However, he thinks that the youngster may be following in his footsteps a little too closely, with Cozza recently sporting a Zabriskie-like moustache. “Cozza is trying to steal my thunder, he copied me,” laughed Zabriskie. Cozza, however, told the situation differently, saying that it was the other way around and that Zabriskie was inspired by the 23 year-old.

I think it must be they both stole the idea from Dave Sommerville. He’s so pro, it much more likely Sommerville thought of it before Cozza and Zabriske both.

Truly excellent advice that can be heeded by all. This further highlights that when dealing with an awkward, confusing, or difficult situation the best advice is to be sure to ask yourself, WWJFTD?

Is the SS normally this disorganized? I ate lots of cold, rainy horse crap. I’d like to see my name up somewhere.

Anonymous

it normally is this poorly organized. No it isn’t any more difficult to send results to Bikereg, than it is to USCF or to post them on the series website. Unfortunately Van Dunk doesn’t do any of the above. That being said, I am happy to have the race and will continue to reward his bad behavior with my $.

are not there for the 16th. Nor are series or category leaders posted, nor are they correct. All of which should be on the website for the race series.

It is pretty stupid to have a point series and not give people an opportunity to actually view the point standings. Too many years of it. I don’t think I’d do the spring series again. Probably head to Bethel next year with the opportunity to double up on races.

Branchbrook offers a very well run alternative as well. Frustrating not to have any information available, and seems even worse this year. At least it was somewhat up-to-date up until about 1/2 way through last year. This year, website hasn’t been updated yet.

I don’t think I’ll pre-reg, and might just fill in blank spaces with a race or two. Doesn’t make sense to commit to a series that doesn’t offer any series information
