Hangover 3/10/2008

Section head text.

It was a “pick your poison” weekend of racing in the area, with choices ranging from “wet” to “frozen”. Branch Brook was closed due to flooding and frogs falling from the sky. The CRCA race was held in the rain, with John Loehner winning the A race from a break that included Igor Misicki, David Taylor, Alex Bremer, and Ken Harris.

Maria Quiroga wins the Women’s race with Matt Richards and Colin Prensky winning the B and C fields, respectively.
Bethel results via telegraph here are sparse but rumor has it that a fellow named Lindine won the Pro 123 and Freifelder won the the 3/4 race.
At the Spring Series Central Park Criterium, held on a course that included “taking the cut-off” for ice on the downhill reasons, Wilson Vasquez won in a field sprint, proving, in fact, that he is training. Reports on his victory dance are sketchy.
Gary Steinberg and Juan Pimental made it a Global Locate one-two in the Masters Race. Other results are missing as I had to retreat back immediately to the wilds of New Jersey, as we were left without power overnight. I was quite proud of my family’s ability to quickly adapt to near subsistence-level living. We learned a few things about ourselves. I also learned that Bichon Frisé are fond of spoiled refrigerator leftovers, and that they are endearingly unfamiliar with snare traps. But don’t let anyone tell you that you can feed a family of four with two Bichons, it takes at least three.
And as far as the Paris Nice results go – one word SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!!!!

Gald to see Gabrielle Gentile was DQed for throwing punches in the pack at full speed. This guy is fighting in every race he enters. He has a bad attitude and is a sketchy rider. He cuts guys off and when they call him out he gets hot headed. I dont care what you do after the race but when I am on your wheel and you are thowing punches at the guy next to you, then it puts the whole pack at risk. This guy should be banned for the series not just DQed. Total Clown…

right behind it

Gentile definitely provoked it, but it was the Hudson Valley Velo Club rider #16 on the Merlin who threw the punch. He was also DQed. Both dipshits I never want to race with again. They were literally fighting for position 2/3 of the way back in the pack.

Anonymous

THE Hudson Valley guy may have thrown a punch but Gabriele did also, I saw while I was ready to go down with them. The problem is that Gabriele is always involved in this shit. ESG Qualifiers last year, Jiminy Peak the list goes on. Officials need to watch him. Fight after the race when it does not impact the guys around you.

On a positive note, nice job to Bob German and Dave Friefelder for sticking the two man break. The wind was brutal and they countered at the perfect time after catching the Colavita racer and Breaking Away Bicycles racer who attacked. Also, Kim Riseth from Adler guy rode very strong in the 3/4 until pulling out with a mechanical.

Pro1-3 – Lindine is a monster and will be even better this year. Besides TargetT, some of the Sommerville guys looked very strong.

Wimp

…or you could have been a wus and just had a nice training ride on a sunny Sunday in CP like me around noon to three. Much better for March.

Yeah, Gentile was tapping the guy, bumping bars, trying to force him into the curb, then he tried head butting and ramming him into the curb. That’s when HVVC threw the punch. Then Gentile almost took out 20 guys when he veered off through the pack.

target was using radios? was it me or did it seem they multiplied like gremlins??? there was like 37 of them out there. seemed to me there were sketchy riders all over the place – especially at the start of the race (in 1/2/3). Global locate guy is a peril and so is the little itty bitty pint sized pest on foundation. either develop peripheral vision or turn and look. it’s not that complicated.

Anonymous

the campmor guy who won caused a crash in the final stretch of the race when he decided to attack and shove his way in between two riders who were practically shoulder length already. the guy who fell the hardest was really thrashed…

Anonymous

I think the TargetTraining and Keltic teams confused guys. Both had about 7 riders and the kits are almost identical in color now. TT is riding whit and green bikes and kits. PS – no one cares about Cat 5s and sketchy riding that is part of Cat5 racing.

Anonymous

thats alejandro guzman. rumor has it that he has no right eye… and therefore can’t help cutting your front wheel every 30 seconds. best to remain in front of him at all times.

Anonymous

yeah man they had radios and everything, i don’t even know if they did too well. and plus, it’s a training race.

and yooo, don’t bust alejandro, he’s a very helpful person to have in front of you in a sprint.

Anonymous

dudes start hating because someone else had the thought to use a radio. Why not? You say it’s a training race..maybe they want to be proficient in race radio use when there is a real race.
Anyway, how does it affect you? Does it slow you down?
Maybe it bothers you because it’s another reason why you suck…

Anonymous

I don’t believe you’re allowed to use radios in 123 races. I think they are only legal in p/1/2’s. Maybe I’m wrong though.

Dolan

i’m not sure there is hate here… i think it’s just a chuckle. in my experience radios make best sense for asking “where the fuck is our van i’ve been nursing the same bottle for 60k”… you would have to pay me to wear one for a training crit. there is so much annoying banter that has nothing to do with alejandro guzman crashing me (again) and other pertinent or more immediate issues.

Not on TT

Those guys are pretty nice and to say they did not do well – They had 1st and 2nd in a two man break. The rest of the team held things down. Not bad to me? There were plenty of big teams to bring them back if they had the power.

Anonymous

yeah target and sommerville had guys in the break… pretty sure the onus was on everyone else in the pack. with that said i’m not sure there was another team there that put forth a cohesive effort the entire race.

Anonymous

The stronger teams in size and ability had guys in the break. The rest of the riders were either Cat3s (50%) who were sitting in after doing the 3/4 or 1s and 2s with no team or a very small team. It was basically TT, Sommerville and Breaking Away Bicyles with the big teams. You not going to get a Cat 3 doing back to back races to pull back a break with 1s.

1K3. Non-handheld radios with only one earpiece providing communication with coaches, managers or other riders may
be worn or carried by the rider or bicycle only in elite road events that include category 1,2, or professional riders, and not in masters or junior races. No earpieces may be worn except as authorized above; audio playback devices are expressly forbidden.

The rules are not clear “That include Cat 1 and 2 racers”. Seems that the Pro1-3 field fits this def. No? Not clear at all.

F Lee Bailey

The Rule does not say to be worn in Elite races with Cat1 and 2 only racers. Lawyers would have a field day with that definition/rule interpretation.

That Guzman is a sprinting monster for a dude that size. He’s the Great White Hope for little riders who think they could never sprint. Fast as hell – I remember him from a win or two in CP last year. Pretty fit dude. Didnt realize he was a cyclops though.

Anonymous

Maybe Foundation put him through the “Paulie School of Bike Handling” over the offseason to brush up on technique.

Anonymous

It can be interpreted to mean – If the racing event has a 123 field then all riders within that field “including the 3 riders” can use radios. I would think that a 3 field “only” could not use radios irregardless of the event supporting 1-2 race run separately from the 3’s.

g.g.

(with fewer cap A’s)
you think so?
I say look for another ride-away by Gilbert, as he seems to be coming into form finally

Question – if you’re only window to ride was in the early AM would you have raced or done your leisurely laps? Or would you have not ridden at all. Just wondering….

Yes, a Pro/1/2/3 field would fit this definition, as it does include category 1, 2, and professional riders. So they all (even the 3’s) could wear radios. The FBF 1/2/3 race can use radios if they wish.

That was copied directly from the 2008 USA Cycling Road/Track/Cyclocross rule book; it is currently available at http://www.usacycling.org/forms/RdTrkCx_rulebook.pdf if you wish to check it out.

The wimp is just upset that he doesn’t have the discipline to wake up early and brave the cold for more fun than boring laps

Anonymous

are at newyorkbikeracing.com, Van Dunks site, aren’t they? The site did say it would be updated Jan 21st, so I’m assuming it’s completly up to date. I couldn’t imagine he is running the series and not keeping the riders informed.

don’t know if racing short races in frigid temps will do you any good down the line but what the hell, if you’re itching to race do it. if you have the time to take a long ride in the afternoon, lucky you.

Video of the start/finish.

We saw how big of a sprint Wilson still has, even on the levers instead of the drops! Nice battle for 2-5…

I do expect more breakaway success once this settles and the “strong” teams with riders that should be escaping, realize that the field clearly doesn’t have that collective power but will clean up nicely if there is a stalemate.

Crosswinds, timing, commitment to the tactic…too much “make it up as you go”…playing right into the sprinters playbook.

Thanks again Organic Athlete to the great video! Something for us to frenzy on!

Rob

I heard that Quiroga’s teammate, Maggie Shirley, got second in the women’s race. That’s amazing! So, why talk about the 2nd, 3rd, etc. in the men’s race and give no props to the ladies?

Anonymous

ah, you are talking about them. Good job. Maybe someone else should as well? Common, someone. Maybe even a woman who was in the race.

A Marshal

Quiroga and Shirley broke away with two other riders early on. They dropped those 2 riders on the last laps and came in together giving Radical Media 1 & 2. They looked great out there.
