Still racing

Yes there was bike racing this weekend, and I will do me best to suss out what might have happened.

There was a race at FBF on Saturday, and I know that Al Barough of BH/Garneau won the 1/2/3 race, but details about the other races are not available. As always, if you won, use an alias and congratulate yourself. 

At the Storm King Cannibal time trial, David Anthony of BH/Garneau came first, results are here.

At the Pete Senia Memorial in Prospect Park, according to the Spring Series Twitter account, Stephan Dioslaki of Metra/Cycles 54 won the Pro/1/2/3 race, C Marte won the cat 3/4 race, J Zaverdas won the masters race and W Lope won the cat 5 race. W Lope and a David Jordan rider destroyed the 5 field at PP. Two man break with over 30sec gap on the field. Saw them away for at least 3 laps and they both just cruised across the line.

Aero wheels are allowed because almost all rims are aero in some way. Its a fine line to draw. Sometimes they’ll say 30mm or less but thats not perfect because Zipp 101’s (for example) are pretty aero.

Most cannibal TTs go by what’s mass start legal. That’s the case here.

GMSR allows everything but TT bikes – even disc wheels. Although at this point, even that’s almost moot with the new aero frames.

I remember when DA started at NYVelocity he was a little overweight and showed up on a sweet Pinarello with Zipps. The guy got good coaching from the start, worked his ass off and has a successful career that lets him have all the toys to train harder with. He probably has more carbon wheels at home than your whole team. When you guys are doing the spring series in 30 degrees and starting in the dark he’s putting on suntan lotion for a crit in some exotic locale. Show envy, be jelous even hate him ’cause he’s always going to be faster than you but don’t throw doping accusations so randomly.

The race is on, yes, of course! We’re happy to have a race for anyone who shows. The course is challenging, the fall colors are creeping in, and the weather is going to be great up here. We are also giving away a bunch of Battenkill stuff to participants: t-shirts, musette bags, other stuff. We’ll be providing Tour of the Battenkill registration coupons to BattenFall racers too.

1 PM starts, so there’s plenty of time for the drive. If you stick around for the Sunday Fall Preview ride on the new Battenkill course and stay at the Cambridge Hotel, then meet me at the bar and I’ll buy you a beer.

One of the 20 something Cat 1s he beat was 2nd at Tokeneke (cat 1) 8th overall at Catskills (cat 1) and the other was 3rd at Hilltowns (cat1/2). So those dudes can climb for sure – so any doubts aren’t exactly far-fetched

Hey here’s a thought: maybe a few of those cat 1’s that got a whoopin’ are now off the season-long vitamin program and now running on normally aspirated horsepower, which is another way of saying perhaps THEY SUCK and really aren’t any better than DA once on a level playing field.

Wow you guys are pathetic. It’s not that complicated.

First of all they did not run the tt on storm king. It was damaged so they moved it. New course had a grand total of 350 feet elevation gain over 6 miles. Hardly an uphill tt.

Second, if anything you should be wondering why Aiden Charles got beat by both DA and David Hoyle when he was able to clobber both of them in the very similar GMSR itt. And fwiw DA beat Charles by an even bigger margin at GMSR.

Third, the first 16 minutes out of the gate everyone is fresh. Totally different then the end of 3 or 4 hours of racing. That is really where the differences in the categories show up, especially for the old dudes.

do not be shocked if you get your arse kicked by a cat 3 or even cat 5 tt guy, down in New Jersey there are guys that all they do are Time trials and never upgrade from cat 5 but will quite easily have no problem in beating the majority of cat 1 , cat 2 guys around here. I used to get pissed at the cat 5 guys who would always kick my arse and take the prize money every week. I ended up having to upgrade just to stand a chance of winning a bloody race.

Time trials are not a main concern for most riders but for some riders all they do is time trial, DA can time trial well for sure so no big shocker,

The Storm King was pretty much the most poorly organized cycling event I have ever seen in 25 years of racing. Moving the with zero notice to riders is beyond bush league. That is why we have contact information, and this new thing called the internet. PLUS, reducing the entry fee late in the registration process and not crediting the difference to people who registered early is less than ethical. The weather was not cooperative, however the road was closed for other reasons and HAD been for weeks. I live two hours away and I knew there was a problem with the road. First hint: Chain link fences blocking access. Did none of the promoters preview their own course more than 5 minutes before the start? I expect better from one of John’s events

It’s kind of crappy, but “less than ethical” is a bit of hyperbole. Plenty of enterprises offer last minute discounts (hotels, airlines, etc etc). You can take a chance and wait, might be full, might not be. Not previewing the course kind of sucks, but isn’t the end of the world. Have you raced an AVD event? Doesn’t sound like this is “the worst,” and you are the first and only complainer I’ve heard.
