CRCA 3/25 A

Section head text.

Ken Harris ‘accidentally’ rolled off the front of a break containing Kevin Molloy, Matt Howard, Doug O’Neil, Tom Auth, Sal Abbruze, Ed Bennett, and Scot Willingham just before Tavern on the Green. Seeing his gap, El Presidente cranked away, aided by Kevin Molloy’s presence in the break. The other riders in the break knew chasing down Ken would only ensure victory for sprinter extraordinaire Molloy, and that bit of doubt helped The Hammer hold his lead and take the win, while Molloy edged out The Evil Matt Howard for third just behind.

Oustanding ! Both the win and the coveredge NYVelocity gives these races. Out of interest how did "Andy the lens" fare in the B’s today ?

Ken

There’s nothing as rewarding as being in a break with guys who have a positive attitude about racing. And the new bike is nice. There seems to be some problem keeping that helmet straight, though.

Mr. Felt

Wouldn’t it be nice if you win a race against some really good Cat 2’s and it counted for you 3-2 upgrade?

Justin

Ken doesn’t need to be forced to upgrade – hes tried (I think anyway) to get upgraqded several times but been knocked back by you-know-who. On this form he won’t need any help from "powers" his resume will do it.

Justin

Actually come to think of it Ken as Pres is the "power" at CRCA – it would sort of be like that ejit Bush impeaching himself

I wish there were more riders like Ken. He plays his cards well and races hard everytime out there. great win !

JB

If you mean playing your cards well by showing everyone your hand at registration than I guess your right. Don’t get me wrong Ken is one of the strongest guys and one the most aggressive guys in the city but he could be winning a lot more if he really played his cards better.

MH

Ken races with a lot of integrity, and that pays dividends. Everybody knows he’s a hammer, and everybody knows he’s not afraid to work hard in a race. So maybe that counts as showing his hand. On the other hand, when you have a small break with a 20-second gap and 30 miles to go, a reputation like that can help motivate other riders to commit and work hard as well. Karl’s right — I think it’s fair to say that Ken’s chances in a field sprint against Cat 1 sprinters are not as good as his chances of winning out of a tired 8-man breakaway, as we saw yesterday.

JB

I’m not saying he should wait for the sprint. I’m saying he works too hard when he shouldn’t. I’ve seen him in races numerous times pulling every early break back by himself even when he has no other teamates in the race. Then in the end when the winning break goes he is to tired from working too much early on. I’m saying he just needs to be a little patient and not spend soo much energy early on. He could win 20 races a year solo I’m sure.

Want to get upgraded? Then stop wasting your time in the CRCA races that don’t count for shit. You race against the same guys everytime.

kwk

the CRCA races might not mean much in the racing world but the racing is hard (if you make it that way) and it will get you ready for the tough early season races like philly two day. besides where else should we race?? Redlands? that race does not mean shit either compared to Crit international or flanders.

Justin

thinking out loud for a second, that breakway combo was – for the day – probably the perfect breakaway. Not only did it have a collection of all hammers but with the exception of Remax every team was represented up front – and no-one had more than 1 guy to dominate in #’s. Remax certainly gave it a shot at bringing it back but not surprising they won going away.

Certainly a good education in team tactics – and huge thanks to Ed B for bridging up and not making us (VB) do too much work to help bring it back !

Still as it stand with 2 weeks to go before the 1st team cup race I still think my pre-season predictions were pretty accurate…..though I’m now wishing I had throw a tenner each way on Remax for a show….

kevin molloy

it didn’t feel perfect as 4 TT hammers (harris, auth, o’neill, willingham) were beating my brains out and the threat of a very fit matt howard along for the ride! i was constantly looking back hoping that my teammates were bridging
